ROOM DIARIES
Al subir a su habitación, la ventana
de un lado mostró los rascacielos;
la otra, las bajas casas de una isla
alucinada: cientos de luces que con
amable fuerza quitaban brillo del
cielo. Es una ciudad con todas sus letras…
Batió los hielos y ya no sonaba
más nada que eso. Los niños
ya no corrían; sus madres tampoco.
Recibió la brisa que, por insólito,
ha ya pasado por La Habana antes
de llegar ahí y agradeció, acaso
vencido —ya no fuera de casa—,
esa América para los americanos
que, aun si de plástico, vuelve a entregar
los olores y las sales de una
tierra que de otra manera se habrían
disuelto con aquel imperio en
el obligado olvido.
He went upstairs and walked through
his room: He saw two windows in front
of him. The first view was full of skyscrapers;
the second one was the view
of a charmed Island brighter than the
sky. A city without mincing words… He
clinks his glass again and everything
faded out. The kids’ weren’t running
around the house anymore, their mothers
either… He let himself feel the air
and the breeze that passed through
La abana first and then was passing
through his own lungs. Being there,
not far away from home anymore, he
felt beaten but at the same time, he felt
loaded by gratitude because America
had given him the gift of experiencing
the sounds and smells of his land. And
if it wouldn’t be for them those memories
would be vanishing like the forgotten
empire at the horizon.
