MIL CAMINOS
DISTINTOS
One thousand different paths
Portrait: José Vicente Henríquez
@jocioso
inicial: “Lujo Austero Latinoamericano”. La receptividad fue positiva
de inmediato porque la ironía ponía a pensar y a descifrar;
Only a few of the ideas that were written in stone
have gracefully survived through history, and such
is the case with LUSTER Magazine. Almost five
years ago we launched this platform focused on showing the beauty
that Latin American has to offer through different contents and
experiences. We came up with a slogan that summarized our initial
approach: Latin American Austere Luxury. That concept was very
well received because the irony of it put the minds of the readers
into gears; they wanted to decode the idea. We got into the reader’s
wits employing that minimalist, sophisticated concept but we didn’t
stop there. Now we transform it into an extremely well-defined brand
concept that was all about AMERICA + LUXURY. We selected
Miami as our epicenter, LATIN AMERICA as our mother ship and
the rest of the world as our endless area of research.
Mutatis mutandis. We are going to start this edition fine-tuning our tools
with the help of the CEO of Condé Nast Latam and Former Editorin-Chief
of Vogue Mexico & Vogue Latin America: Eva Hughes,
who kindly accepted to enlist herself into our army in the position of
Contributing Editor USA (what an honor!) aiming to pave the way
and to help us keep polishing our skills. We have changed the names
of the first and second sections: now you can find everything about
jewelry and luxury watches in MASTERPIECES and meet diverse
artistic manifestations in the CULTURE section. We went further
on graphic design to make a lifting to our November Anniversary
Edition. We want to build a concise, clear and humane connection
with our readers that they can follow and track through our website,
APP and Social Media. Our goal? To keep creating experiences that
go beyond screens and paper so our readers bond not only with the
Magazine but also with each other.
We are starting a new era with this 6th issue: We highlight the Latin
American figures and icons of our time, as well as all the things we
adore the most about Miami and other top-quality experiences we
found around the world; all of them which are representing the
different heritages and mixes they provide. We also feature the British-
Brazilian artist, Kaya Scodelario, in our cover as she resembles a
clashing talisman of Clash by Cartier. Here we present all the amazing
personalities who share this summer voyage, which feels like a different
journey for every individual who becomes part of it because like Made
would say “We can always take the same path, but it is never the same
experience”. So, the ship that will take us to the next stop is sailing…
REINVENCIÓN EDITORIAL
Reimagining the publishing industry
complaciendo a nuestros lectores.
Running a publishing house in these changing times is
not an easy task because, as we know, this digital era has
changed the publishing industry, therefore in our team, we
have always bet on high-tech experiences without leaving
printed on paper stories behind. We want to keep the
balance between those two worlds: print and digital.
We are intent to ensure that our product is being consumed
by new readers every day and that’s the reason we work
hard on creating content from a global perspective fused
with the digital experiences that we offer through our
platform (which is available on the Apple Store and Google
Play). This is something I like to call “content experience”:
Our innovative, digital project, which offers an interactive,
high-tech experience that meets every reader requirements
in the most finely way.
As the CEO of this publishing group, I have always bet
on innovation and new editorial strategies and that’s why
I’m sure we are ready to change by taking the next step
that will satisfy all of our readers’ needs.
CLASE
In the heart of the Yucatan jungle, stands IK Lab,
a gallery that harmonizes with its surroundings
through colossal domes that shelter exquisite
contemporary exhibitions of avant-garde art and
invite the viewer to experience a kind of mystical
abduction while transiting through cold floors
and curves of polished cement, unified by walls
with bejuco wood.
INSECTA
The last stage of the metamorphosis of a cryosic gives rise to speculative beauty: something
that is on its way to the majesty and within which mistery and greatness are
enclosed. This is proposed by Vhernier and Jorge Eduardo Neira Sterkel, starting from
the same structure, each in his way, to compose admirable works.
A jewel-brooch molded with cornelian and
crowned by diamonds, makes up the sublime
caterpillar created by the Italian house Vhernier,
a signature that gets timeless pieces that flirt with
contemporary art, whose approach to precious
stones and noble materials translate their creative
act into experimental craftsmanship.
En The Death and Life of John F. Donovan de Xavier Dolan, el
Thin and frail, paper is the best witness to our past. Holding
an unspoken and yet undeniable pact with remembrance,
creating a kind of communication which transforms it into
a portal to a time and place that no longer exists. In Dolan’s
The Death and Life of John F. Donovan, paper is the very
thing that drives the plot forward; the correspondence
between Rupert, a boy of 11 (Jacob Tremblay) and Jon
. Donovan, a famous actor haunted by a life filled with
secrecy (Kit Harrington), will trigger a series of events and
be the sole proof of the impact they have in each other’s life.
Halfway through the plot, almost as thin as the paper supporting
it, the iaget Altiplano finds its purpose: measure
time going through Jon Donovan’s wrist, who slowly will
start to rid himself of his façade to show himself not as the
hero who charmed his young admirer, but as the human
being he actually is.
LA MÁQUINA DEL TIEMPO
THE TIME MACHINE
Classic and subtle, the 3mm thick case makes it the thinnest
self-winding watch of the world. Its oscillating weight made
up by 22K of rose gold was minimized and decentralized,
and decorated with the traditional Côtes de Genève. In order
to achieve this feat, the manufacturer had to reduce to the
very minimum the distance between all of the elements of
the caliber, which involved precise calculations to achieve
the desired weight of each piece.
no podemos someter a nuestros deseos.
Are you master of your own time, or is it the other
way around?
Time is something you undergo, mathematical time that is.
On the other hand, relative time is interesting because it can
be mastered. Maybe this sounds a bit irrational but I think
it’s possible to go through life without being captive to time.
What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned
about time?
It has to be used as much as it’s possible. Work hard, play hard.
What’s your favorite complication?
None at all At Ressence we see watchmaking a bit differently.
We come up with solutions, not problems. It may seem like a
marketing scheme but it’s as simple. Every Ressence watch has
been designed from the users’ perspective. The mechanical
watch has been downgraded to a decoration accessorie. It has
fallen into obsolescence because unfortunately they have lost
their original reason of existence. Nowadays it’s almost Kitsch
to wear one. Any product, even a watch, is only relevant if
it’s functional. The more functional it is, the more relevant
it becomes. When we apply oil to our watches, it’s not about
setting us aside from the competition, its about eciency.
The watch becomes 50% more readable (better contrast and
2D lecture) as well as more functional (needing 4 times less
energy). Our Type 5 is the only diver’s mechanical watch
perfectly readable underwater, and that is not a small fee for
divers.
Why the human obsession to control and measure
time?
Because we have no real dominion over it. We’re like cows
watching trains go by, only being able to count them. On
Earth, time is the only non-physical dimension we can’t
bend to our will. think this fixation is a consequence of the
mice race we’re living in. The more you run, the more you
are obsessed with it. You can recognize these “runners” by
the watch they wear. But they’re not really controlling time.
Theyre only controlling themselves, making sure they fit
within the time zones. Free folk cares less about time. I’m
not historian but I believe our relationship with time had a
turning point after the industrial revolution.
If you could travel through time, where would you go?
I’m happy with the current present. The past is not better;
the future is not “greener” (As “the grass is not greener”). Every
moment in time has its challenges and our own feels like
a critical one. We’re playing an active role in the digital
revolution. As a brand, we aim to fit and take advantage of
every possibility this instant offers us. The Type 2 is a good
example of our steam engine. We’ll see where it takes us;
we’re really looking forward to it.
Manns explores nature and precious metals with the purpose
Anyone who ever had the chance of
running into one of her many faces, be it
through the silver screen or their own TV,
can live in the certainty of knowing the
true meaning of beauty. That same beauty
made her the face of Clash by Cartier, a
jewelry collection which honors all her
charm, passion and above all her roots
of the Titans (2010), Cumbres borrascosas (2011), la saga
Maze Runner , , y irates of the Caribbean:
Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017).
mujer.
Kayla equals beauty by the definition,
there’s no doubting that. That
mystical and elusive property, subjective
throughout the annals of history, is
her most undeniable trait, a universal
truth. But this gift wasnt handed down
to her by the Gods in their immense
wisdom. All of her charms come from
somewhere deeper: from the passion
that lays immersed within her, that
powerful feeling has been her sword
and shield ever since her beginning.
She passionately upholds her values
and beliefs passionately found herself
throughout the years passionately
faced the challenge while being very
young and mostly inexperienced) of
portraying Effy Stonem, the complex
character who made her immortal inside
our brains. And yet not only was
our consciousness shook by her performance
but the very character itself,
the seemingly supporting role evolved
to the point of becoming a central element
of the plot and the main character
of one of three stories that marked
the ending of Skins, the British T
series that ran for 7 successful seasons
and managed to establish her image in
our heads.
But that would only be the beginning.
After Skins she would make it into the
movie industry in Moon (2009) starring
Sam Rockwell, a debut that would
launch her into the big screen and take
her to be a part of projects like the movie
adaptation of Clash of the Titans
(2010), Wuthering Heights (2011), the
Maze Runner saga , ,
and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead
Men Tell No Tales (2017). Matching
her personality, every one of her roles
portrays brave and fierce women, powerful
women who serve as an inspiration
to others this is also true for her
latest project Crawl , where she
plays a woman who has to fight her way
through natural disaster while dealing
with deathly predators preying on her.
All of those stories, be it by the space
they take place in or the nature of their
nside of her many worlds converge:
the legendary concept of beauty and
fierceness inherent to bravery the secret
of eternal youth and the maturity
which comes through experience The
Old World embodied by England and
the New World claiming her all the
from Brazil. Kaya is the living embodiment
of an antithesis, almost like a terrible
yet generous deity who refuses to
share her secrets but knows just when
to be completely delightful. All of those
contrasts put her Cartiers radar when
they were looking for the face of Clash,
their latest jewelry collection which
looks to recreate the resulting apotheosis,
occurring from the confrontation
of all the facets of the same woman.
What was the first ever Cartier
My first ever was bought for me by my
husband when we were falling in love.
Wed just met and it was coming up to
Christmas and he’d been really secretive
for a couple of weeks and was
like Oh god, whats going on es
going to break up with me. The day
before Christmas, dont know why,
but he said Can give you this now
and said es and opened it and
it was a Love bangle that d casually
mentioned when we very first met
not even dropping a hint, I just mentioned
how beautiful they were. e
bought me the rose gold one and he
told me that whilst he was buying it, he
realised he wanted to propose to me,
so he sort of weirdly proposed with the
Love bangle. Then he got me the platinum
one as my push present, when
had my son.
semanas y yo pensaba: Dios mío, qu sucede Seguramente
Inglaterra, pero recientemente he aprendido a apreciar
gentileza. Eso realmente tiene mucho sentido para mí.
A raíz de esta colaboración ¿podrías contarnos
alguna experiencia memorable que surgiera
junto a Cartier?
Tell us a little bit about what it means to be
the official ambassador of Clash.
ts very exciting ve never collaborated with a
brand before. always felt like wanted to wait for
the right thing, for something that meant something
personally to me and that believed in. When first
had my meeting with Cartier, they spoke a lot about
wanting to celebrate the two sides of me the Brazilian
side and the British side, which really touched
my heart because I’ve never got to celebrate my
South American side publicly before.
You grew up in England…?
grew up in England, but my mum is Brazilian
and raised me on her own, so my culture is much
more Brazilian than British. ve always felt a bit
lost with that. ve always felt like didnt quite fit
in in England and didnt quite fit in in Brazil. But
ve recently kind of learnt to embrace both sides of
that and when they spoke to me about the jewellery,
thats what they wanted to show through it. The idea
that something can be strong and fierce, but also soft
and fluid and gentle. t felt like that really made sense
to me.
Can you tell us about an unforgettable experience
with Cartier, as part of this collaboration?
We shot the movie in Lithuania over two days. We
arrived into this big abandoned warehouse it
looked very creepy and quite strange and didnt
know what to expect. We walked in and they had
actually built this gorgeous set that was made to look
as though it was a Cartier mansion. We had the red
rugs in the perfect colour, we had the white walls and
the gold finishings. t was the moment that realised
what a big deal this was and how much effort they
had put into creating this Clash world around it.
That felt really special and I felt very honoured that
that had all been built for me. That was the most
magical moment for me.
Did you end up having to work out for it?
By the end, was ripped. had full on muscles from
the physicality of it. also play a swimmer, so needed
to get in physical shape for that. That was a lot
escalofriante y yo no sabía qué esperar.
publicitarias luciendo dóciles, sumisas y abrumadas o, si
no, frágiles y delicadas.
of fun. Then, have Extremely Wicked,
Shockingly Evil and ile with ac Efron
playing Ted Bundy. play his wife, Carole
Ann Boone, and thats really, really different
for me. m in a wig, m in glasses, and
that for me was a really wonderful experience
to get to play someone that was living
and breathing and that I could research
and could recreate her in my own way.
Thats a very dark, messed up story, but a
really interesting perspective think, and
an important perspective to have the women
who were infatuated with him and understand
why. Or maybe we dont understand
why by the end, but at least seeing it
through their eyes tells it from a different
point of view.
Your roles are usually strong, confident
and independent people not
afraid of standing up for their ideas.
Are you like that in real life?
Definitely. think thats why gravitate
towards roles like that. Even with stuff
like this with the jewellery, for me it had
to be something strong and empowering.
think we get quite used to seeing women
in campaigns looking quite submissive
or laying down or overwhelmed, or soft
and gentle. loved that we still have a
fierce woman at the centre of this. Shes
loud! Both sides of her are dominant
and proud. Thats something always
look for in roles because its what interests
me. ve never met a woman who
isn’t interesting, so I don’t understand
why we would ever show that in a movie
because they don’t exist. We’re all complicated
in a beautiful way. Thats what
interests me in a human being, so that’s
what want to portray.
Who’s the most complex character
you’ve ever played?
robably Effy, because had time with
her, which is a real gift as an actor. To
be able to follow a character through for
four years is quite rare and really wonderful
to have that time with her and to
watch her grow and evolve from being
the younger sister in the first couple of
series and kind of taking over in the second
series and becoming her own spirit
and working out her own mind. t was
also the first character played where
we dealt with mental illness, which was
very important to me. t was wonderful
to really get to experience that with her
and understand it, or try to understand
it and to introduce that into young peoples
lives, that its O to talk about and
it’s something a lot of young people suffer
with and have to deal with. thought
it was very brave that we had a leading
character like that on a show.
Can you tell me something that is
very Brazilian about you?
I laugh so loudly and I can’t contain it
when really want to laugh about something
and throw my head back and
my hands go up in the air. My friends
always make fun of me for that, but
use my hands when talk, a lot, which is
definitely from my mum.
Sin embargo, una nación privilegiada
It’s no easy task to create something
truly iconic. Nevertheless, a prosperous
and ambitious nation like Qatar managed
to do it with the help of Jean Nouvel.
fifty-seven pounds of ingredients including insects and
dried chile – arrived in the luggage of the Mexicans who
prepared dishes like Pumpkin snack with caviar and honey,
nixtamalized beet with an onion reduction and pork
in chile pasado. Second stop took the crew to Lindesnes:
During three days, Jorge Vallejo and a selected group
of international chefs shared their viewpoints regarding
seafood and the way they work inside their different
kitchens.
The city of Copenhagen and the stoves of Llama served as
hosts to the third stop. One of the challenges of Chef Jorge
was to show how Quintonil uses uncommon ingredients to
the rest of the world: Insects, to name a few, did not miss
any dish and guests found that more than a trick designed
to draw for attention they provided unique fl avors to every
dish. The fi rst night their diners enjoyed a degustation menu,
with dishes like shrimp Sando with shrimp mayonnaise,
smoked oil, and witch dip eracruzana fi sh with tomato
confit and alamata olives and cherry sorbet with mezcal
and Chicatanas ants.
A new day and a new journey, this is how Quintonil Quest felt,
next stop took the crew to Helsinki, Finland, where Pastor’s
kitchen stood ready to be the stage of three nights of special
dinners. In this stop, the encounters had an extra challenge:
the plating was performed in front of the diners at the same
time the chef was narrating stories, explaining techniques
and ingredients through a mic. A five dishes menu made by
Quintonil was served with snacks from Pastor, among them
the nixtamalized beet, pork in chile pasado, and as dessert,
buttermilk ice cream with artichoke and apple cream.
The last stop was the most important: Accompanied by Chef
Igor Grishechkin from Cococo retaurant, located in St. Petersburg,
Russia. “I think that this menu represents properly
the fl avors that we try to transmit in uintonil. Even though
is based on traditional Mexican cuisine, I think it also represents
a contemporary way to see how we eat and how we
live right now in Mexico City”, confessed the chef when
asked about this huge challenge, a challenge that got him
away from his comfort zones: his family and his restaurant’s
kitchen, two things that he does not enjoy being away from
for long periods of time.
Fin de poema by Juan Tallón
El apetito nocturno
de Pizarnik
Pizarnik’s night cravings
Humberto Arrieti cooks for Alejandra Pizarnik, the
young and tragic Argentinean poet, whose last hours
of life are described in “FIN DE POEMA” (a Poem’s
ending), the novel by the Spanish writer Juan Tallón.
By Adriana Gibbs
@adrianagibbsm
Photos:
Even if suicide can be understood as a total loss of appetite
for life, this doesn’t mean that suicidal people need no
provision for the future journey ahead. Despite rejection,
the body is an organism in trance of self-destruction that
needs fuel, even to last moments, because the decision taken
can either take longer than expected, or take the person by
surprise.
That´s what happened with the Argentinean poet Alejandra
izarnik, whose early demise at the age of , is narrated
by Spanish writer Juan Tallón in his novel FIN DE POEMA
(a Poem’s ending), published in second edition by the Madera
Fina Publishing House (Caracas, 2018).
Pizarnik was a night creature, just like Tallón writes
“Anything good that had happened to her, happened at
night … There are nights for whiskey, and nights for wine,
even for tea and spring water. There are nights for Paris, and
for Buenos Aires too. There are s and s nights. There
are nights for staying at home and there are nights for bars.
There are nights for sanity, and nights for delusion. Poetry
cuts right through all of them, like a wolf´s howling”.
And during all of those nights, what dish, what snack, what
whim could keep her going?
Bourdain o Jamie Oliver, libros y visitas a diferentes
INSPIRATION
For Paul Leizaola le cuisine started since he reached
the pan. Son of a Spanish man and a French woman,
he grew up surrounded by a strong gastronomy tradition
and because of that his style calls back for those
weekends with his mother pleasing cravings. Due to
the work from others chefs like Anthony Bourdain
or aime Oliver, books and visits to different markets
around the world, Leizaola has reached total inspiration
depicting his mark in different cooking styles
and flavors from the world.
generar nuevas oportunidades.
PRESENT
Leizaola works full of joy and rejoices the creative
challenge that his work represents. After learned that
truly catering success is not only about the food, but
listening about what customers want and performing
it properly, Alta cocina had found a new necessity
on the people from Caracas. Due to this, his brand
“Llévatelo” was born, a frozen food line with those
Paul’s iconic dishes who can be packed and be ready
to serve up.
THE PATH
Despite taking for years a successful marketing career,
Leizaola did not feel in the right place. Passionate for
cooking and fancy food since very young, he decided to
go to London to learn culinarian arts in Le Cordon Bleu
School. Right after finish it, he moved back to enezuela
where his company was born, Alta Cocina (haute
cuisine), which has turned in a landmark in the country.
Paul has gathered the reliance of Caracas society and
his cuisine had been part of the most exclusive parties
in the city for over more than eighteen years.
ADIÓS A LAS VEREDAS
Un anciano inmigrante
alucina en el recuerdo
la tierra que abandonó
al encontrarse con
una réplica de la casa
de su niñez para por fin
aceptar su afortunada
vejez en el aparente exilio
HOTEL LIFE HOUSE LITTLE HAVANA, MIAMI
Farewell to the sidewalks
The mind of an old man
started to wander the
second he is in front of
an exact replica of the
house he grew up. It’s
time to accept the wonders
of his bittersweet
journey in the exile
“The house is here,” He said to himself.
Beyond time and space: The garden,
the floor, the hat. ow much is
left out of Cuba Was his first thought
while he walked through the ropes because
if the earth weren’t curved and
if his eyes weren’t so fragile, he would
be able to see a vanishing Empire fading
away at the horizon, as the fire of a
dying candle.
“Poderoso es aquello ante
lo que uno ya no puede
nada, como lo perdido o
la melancolía”
“Sadly, the things we cannot
change are always the most
powerful and that feels like
being defeated by melancholy”
El piso ajedrezado, los añejados marcos
de las ventanas, las paredes sobadas
por el tiempo del salitre. Ahí se
rescata, a no demasiados kilómetros
trago y empezaron a aparecer, libres
también un poco más tristes incluso
si se ríen.
Vintages window frames, walls being
touched by the layers of saltpeter, and
black and white floors. There, not so
far away, are hiding the painfully sweet
memories of a country forgotten and
buried into the deepest lonely of a sea
and its history. So much is left out of it.
In this new world, where the new is far
above the old, the man realizes that the
wonders of the American dream live
in the mind of those who had created
their own story. In the end, they’re just
invented. The house is pure again.
He clinks his glass and everything
came back to life. There were women
dressed as Parisian-Caribbean
queens, chasing their little brothers
and sons while they run around the
hallways of that mansion from the
20s. They looked entirely free. For
a moment, the old man felt as if he
were fifteen again. But everything was
just a well-articulated illusion.
The next thing he heard was the characteristic
“param pam pam” sound
of the music and those outdated lyrics
“Oigame compay, no deje el camino por
coger la vereda” Do not forget the path
for staying in the sidewalk. What happened
to those Empires? Sadly, the
things we cannot change are always
the most powerful and that feels like
being defeated by melancholy. The
path: Where he was. The sidewalk: the
remembrances of o a place he couldn’t
be anymore. In his memories, a man
can be the freest, but also the saddest…
even if you see him laughing.
ROOM DIARIES
Al subir a su habitación, la ventana
de un lado mostró los rascacielos;
He went upstairs and walked through
his room: He saw two windows in front
of him. The first view was full of skyscrapers;
the second one was the view
of a charmed Island brighter than the
sky. A city without mincing words… He
clinks his glass again and everything
faded out. The kids’ weren’t running
around the house anymore, their mothers
either… He let himself feel the air
and the breeze that passed through
La abana first and then was passing
through his own lungs. Being there,
not far away from home anymore, he
felt beaten but at the same time, he felt
loaded by gratitude because America
had given him the gift of experiencing
the sounds and smells of his land. And
if it wouldn’t be for them those memories
would be vanishing like the forgotten
empire at the horizon.
IVÁN ARGOTE
PENSAR Y SENTIR
Thinking and feeling
Creator of sculptures, public space installations,
and films: Iván Argote is always looking
forward to exploring the relationships between
communication and subjectivity through his
artwork. His art has been highlighted at the
Coachella Valley and now it’s about to be
featured at the Paris-Sorbonne University
Iván recalls his teenage years as the time of his life where he was able
to develop a solid and objective vision of life thanks to his family: His
anity with handcrafts and his philosophy, founded on solidarity and
discipline, were key to help him all the way to his journey in the art
world.
“I grew fond of photography and videography at the Universidad Nacional de
Colombia (which I loved) and later I specialized in New Medias at the Cinema
and TV School. I obtained a lot of inspiration from the artists I was interested in
while I was there. I found in the art world a place where I could generate questions
and trigger ideas through frames, actions, and objects.”
is first solo exhibition was Valor Agregado (2008) in collaboration
with the French artist Pauline Bastard. Communication is essential
to understand Iván’s aesthetic concerns. He pours his vision and all of
himself over films, objects, and powerful words.
“I’m fascinated with feelings; what we feel and why and how we have created our
very own subjectivity and objectivity because I believe those concepts are two sides
of the same coin. I don’t believe that thinking and feeling are two separate things.”
“Words, whether they are written, spoken, yelled, or chanted, are crucial to my
work. Be it through public space performances, sculptures, poetry imprinted at the
sewer lines of Douala, in protest workshops with children or around installations
at the Coachella Valley: words exist to make us focus on what’s important and to
project ourselves to other places in psychological and psychical ways.”
For Iván, art in Colombia —his home country— has served
as an aesthetically way of raising awareness about the
problems which the country must deal with. “Art in Colombia
has always provided a scene for resilience and freedom. I feel like that
sene no ants to tae off the round spread out and erae a ier
part in the nation’s life within its means, which are kind of fragile but
not minor or unimportant.”
The most important elements that come to our minds
whenever we think about the future of Iván’s career are
his new project “Point of view” at the Coachella valley,
his decorations at the Faculty of Humanities of the Paris-
Sorbonne University, and his most recent film about an
island that went missing as the result of climate change.
For Iván, being Latino is the same as being chévere (meaning
very cool).
Recuerdo llamar a mi
comenzado a estudiar artes visuales.
León Tovar Gallery opened its doors for
the first time in the 90s in Bogota,
Colombia, then it was moved from
challenges, and the next concern was establishing itself in
New ork City. n ooia as oin throuh diut
ties the nania status o oota as oin don eope didnt
want to see or hear about art so I decided to move my gallery to New
York with the support of Marisa del Re.”
When he arrived in the U.S.A., Leon found out that the
artist he used to work with already had their managers
there. As he simply put: “those artists wanted to be part of my
gallery in Colombia, but not in New York, so I had to change the
course and that’s how we decided to focus on Latin American Art.
That why I went from minimalist conceptual art from the U.S.A.
to Latin American modernism, geometric abstraction, kinetic, and
optical art.”
Outlining new courses certainly paid off: making in-depth
investigations and learning how to choose solid artists that
reveal a long-lasting legacy are the reasons why Leon Tovar
allery is now an institution that gathers talented
professionals and places them at the right collections and
its also able to showcase them in permanent collections
of impressive museums like the Reina Sofia Museum, the
Tate and the MET.
EL HORIZONTE NO EXISTE
Actualtemente desarrolla una residencia artística en
Alfara Gráfica en Oviedo, España
Artista enfocado en la potica del mar. A
Susana
describe la tradición paisajística insular
con una constante: el horizonte marino,
elemento lineal que ha condicionado parte
de la composición de la pintura margariteña
por más de años: uizás esto sea
producto de estar aislados, de encontrarnos
siempre con el mar y su horizonte. Esa línea
horizontal es un límite visual, una superficie
física, real, continuada e intervenible.
This artist focuses on the poetry of the sea.
Throughout his career, the sea and the horizon
stopped being subjects to his contemplation,
for the purpose of becoming a vehicle
to social and aesthetic experimentation.
According to Susana, the sea doesnt transmit
claustrophobia originated by the isolation,
but the organic nature of the links between
the geographical space and the vigorous of
the imprints captured by the environment.
Susana describes the island landscaper
tradition with an unchanging element: the
sea horizon has guided for over more than
years the composition of Margariteñan
paintings: Maybe its the result of being
isolated, of always encountering the sea
and the horizon. That thin horizontal line
is a visual border, a physical space, real,
continuous and able to be intervened.
More than a musical genre, jazz has become an entirely different musical
language, rich in sounds that go along with it. Taking off from great musicians
who clearly left their mark, this genre today explores new ways of
artistic expression through classical chords.
¿QUÉ VOLA?
“¿QUÉ VOLA?”
Una expresión cubana, con
una traducción similar a
“¿qué pasa?”, es el nombre
de esta agrupación que
reúne a un septeto de jazz
francés y tres percusionistas
cubanos. Debutan con el
álbum Calle Luz.
This jazz band takes up its
name from the common
Cuban expression, which
roughly translates to “what’s
up?”. Assembling 7 musicians
from France and three
Cuban percussionists they
released their album “Calle
JONÁS MILLÁN
CEO de Juvia Group
By Raquel Seijas
@raquelseijasp
Maravillado desde niño con el mundo de
la restauración, ahora se dedica a crear
recuerdos y experiencias en espacios que
exploran posibilidades más allá de la comida
Marveled by the world of renovation since
he was just a kid, now he dedicates himself
to creating experiences and memories
through spaces that go beyond the cuisine
What is the secret of success behind every Juvia
group’s project?
Every project has its own DNA and its very own personality.
The right location and design (the hardware) might get you further
but the secret (of success) is to count with a talented team
(the software) able to bring authenticity to the project, that’s the
way you transform the space into an experience.
What new vision brings La Estación American Brasserie
to the table?
It’s very different from anything we have done before. Train stations
around the world are much like hubs for encounters and
for their traffic too, so we were looking for a space like that, a
place that could provide a unique experience, not only for the
travelers, but for everyone who desperately needs a meeting
point, especially (for) those who live in downtown Miami and its
surroundings. La Estación American Brasserie offers classics American
meals fused with French cuisine techniques: a menu that
won’t ever grow old even if you eat there every day.
What surprises are preparing Juvia group for the
coming times?
Beyond replicating concepts like cookie cutter, we’re searching
for places with a distinctiveness of their own, that were molded
to their setting, location, and costumers. We have a few projects
going through the pipeline and we’ll reveal them at the right
time. As if they were a good souffl ée: we can’t really show anything
until everything is perfectly cooked!
