Este interés me llevó a leer mucho acerca de
ciencias, lo que mejoró substancialmente mi
rendimiento académico. Continué mis estudios
universitarios hasta que me doctoré en
farmacología y fisiología. Esto fue motivo de
alegría y orgullo para mis padres, ya que me
había convertido en el primer miembro de
la familia en terminar estudios secundarios
y universitarios.

Desde mis tiempos de colegial, y como
biólogo y científico, siempre quise ser parte
de una expedición a las islas Galápagos.
Los descubrimientos de Darwin que lo llevaron
a formular sus ideas acerca de evolución y
selección natural, dejaron una impronta permanente
en mi cerebro. Sin embargo, tanto lo
escaso de mis medios económicos como lo
ocupado de mis horarios de trabajo me impidieron
llevar a cabo aquel anhelo. Mas un
día, de repente, surgió la oportunidad para
que Sharon, mi esposa, y yo nos registráramos
para una expedición de National Geographic
a Galápagos.
Nací en Brooklyn, Nueva York, de padres que
inmigraron desde Italia. Mi padre nunca asistió
a la escuela, y mi madre apenas cursó la
primaria. Ninguno de los dos pudo ayudarme
cuando hacía mis deberes escolares. No obstante,
a pesar de este hándicap, mis padres
constantemente me motivaron hasta que logré
graduarme. Algo que también me motivó
fue la fascinación que sentía por la química
y la biología, fuera del salón de clases.

My experience
on the expedition
of the Galapagos Islands
Since my days in high school, and as a biologist
and scientist, I always wanted to go on a
scientific expedition to the Galápagos Islands.
Darwin’s discoveries that led him to formulate
his ideas on evolution and natural selection
left a permanent imprint in my brain. However,
the lack of funds as well as my busy schedule
in my profession made it very difficult for me
to make that wish come true. Then, suddenly,
60 years later, the unique opportunity arose for
my wife, Sharon, and I to register for a National
Geographic expedition to the Galápagos
Islands.
I was born in Brooklyn, New York to immigrants
from Italy. My dad never went to school and
had no formal education, and mom went only
as far as grade school. Neither parent could
help me with my homework as I struggled
through grade school. However, despite this
handicap, my parents motivated me to the extent
that I was able to pick up my grades. An
additional factor that motivated me was my
fascination with chemistry and biology, outside
the classroom setting. This interest drove me to

Desde la primera visita exploratoria, nos llamó
la atención ver la cantidad de lobos marinos
esparcidos a lo largo de las orillas. Me deleitó
el peculiar sonido que emiten, a mi parecer
calmante. Cuán contrastante al sonido del tráfico
automotor de Los Ángeles.
A la hora del almuerzo, me tocó compartir
mesa con un grupo de médicos que conversaban
acerca de sus prácticas profesionales.
Casi al final, me preguntaron acerca de mi
actividad. Les conté que mi carrera era la de
investigación biomédica básica, además de
ser profesor en facultad de medicina de la
Universidad de California Los Ángeles (UCLA).
Me preguntaron acerca de mis investigaciones
y les respondí que trabajaba en el campo
del Óxido Nítrico y el sistema cardiovascular.
Los doctores estaban familiarizados con el
tema y conocían los efectos favorables del
óxido nítrico en la prevención de ataques cardíacos
y derrames. Uno de ellos mencionó el
hecho de que, adicionalmente, el óxido nítrico
tiene una importante acción bilógica, que es
la de promover la función eréctil en los hombres,
y que estas investigaciones condujeron
al desarrollo y mercadeo del Viagra.
Más tarde, durante la cena, dos de los médicos
con quienes había conversado me
dijeron que habían averiguado acerca
de mí en Google. Entonces me imaginé lo
que vendría después. Me felicitaron por haber
conseguido el premio Nobel en Fisiología
o Medicina por mis descubrimientos acerca
del óxido nítrico. Yo esperaba pasar desapercibido
en mis vacaciones en Galápagos, pero
en menos de 20 minutos todos en el barco
ya sabían quién era yo. Sin embargo, estuvo
bien, pues disfruté mucho de hablar con todos
acerca de mi trabajo.
Sharon y yo estuvimos fascinados con cada
isla que visitamos y con todas las especies
que observamos. Lo más emocionante
y reconfortante fue el haber podido acercarnos
a cada criatura, y el haberlas fotografiado
y filmado en acción. Siendo un neoyorquino,
nunca había tenido la oportunidad
de ver un piquero patas rojas o una fragata
de Galápagos. El poder tener estos hermosos
animales frente a mis ojos fue asombroso,
por decir lo menos. Igual sensación tuvimos
cada vez que vimos piqueros patas azules,
piqueros de Nazca, cucubes, tortugas gigantes,
iguanas marinas e iguanas terrestres; animales
todos increíbles de observar.
The ship where we carried on our expedition
to the Galapagos was the Endeavour II. All
through our first exploration, we were intrigued
with the large number of Galápagos sea lions
sprawled along the waterfront. I was particularly
captivated with the soothing sounds they
make. What a contrast to the repetitive sounds
of automobile traffic in Los Angeles.
During our lunch break, I happened to sit at
a table with several physicians, who were discussing
their practices. At the end of their discussions,
they turned to me and asked me
what I do. And so, I explained that my career
has been one of basic biomedical research
coupled with teaching of graduate and medical
students at the University of California Los
Angeles (UCLA). I was asked about the nature
of my research, and I responded by indicating
that I worked in the field of Nitric Oxide and the
cardiovascular system. The doctors were quite
familiar with the field and the protective effects
of Nitric Oxide in preventing heart attack and
stroke. One of them mentioned the fact that
an additional and very important biological
action of Nitric Oxide is in promoting erectile
function in men, and that this research led to
the development and marketing of ViagraR.
Later that evening, at dinner time, two of the
doctors that I chatted with at lunch told me
that they Googled my name. And then I knew
what was coming. They congratulated me on
being awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology
or Medicine for my pioneering discoveries
on Nitric Oxide. I was planning on playing a
low profile on my vacation in the Galápagos,
but in less than 20 minutes the entire ship
knew who I was. However, that was fine and
I thoroughly enjoyed chatting with everyone
about my work.
Sharon and I were fascinated with every island
we visited and all the species we observed.
Most exciting and rewarding was the opportunity
to get up close to each creature and
take photos and videos of them in action.
Being a New York City boy, I had never heard
of a Red-Footed Booby or a Galápagos Frigate
Bird. To see these beautiful animals for
the very first time directly in front of my eyes
was astonishing, to say the least. Then there
were the Blue-Footed Boobies, Nazca Boobies,
Mockingbirds, Giant Tortoises, and Marine
and Land Iguanas, all incredible animals
to behold.
One thing I learned from this expedition was
the relaxing effect of the outdoors and nature.
For once in my busy and complicated adult
