Carta del Comodoro
Diego Peralta Ramos
Comodoro
querido Comodoro Juan V. Tedin algunas horas después
incansable empuje y enorme optimismo, hubiese querido
Last year started with an announcement
that sourly affected us: on December
27, our loved Commodore Juan V. Tedin
left us some hours after having led,
with his natural kindheartedness, the end of
year barbecue with the staff of the Argentine
Yacht Club.
But as we are sure that Juan, with his tireless
drive and enormous optimism, would have
wanted to continue with the work the Executive
Committee was performing, is that we face this
2018 with energy, because we believe that it is
the best way to pay him homage and remember
him as what he always was: an entrepreneur and
a permanent factor of change.
And this copy you hold in your hands is a sign
of this. The Yacht magazine, that has been
published for 29 years, has now a more modern
and elegant format; and, what is more, has
changed to a biannual regularity, since we are
sure it is a good way to reflect in its pages the
intense activity of the Club and of our fellow
members in the different spheres.
In addition, in this first half of the year, the Club
has had a high number of activities in each of
its areas. For instance, in March we received
the unofficial visit of the King Harald V of
Norway in his way through our country; some
days later, the seven boats that participated in
the Latin American Sails 2018 arrived, among
which was our Liberty Frigate and the Gloria
ship, from Colombia, which we received with a
salute and a procession led by the ambassador
of this country.
As regards the art of navigation, the sailboat
Cippino of our fellow member Daniel Sielecki
and manned by several members of the YCA, is
performing again the classic sailboats circuit in
Europe and it already won Les Voiles d’Antibes,
Classiques, Sail Palma Vela y Argentario Sailing Week.
Costanza Biscay, Juan Agnoletti, Mateo y Agustín Bassanetti
Yachting a Motor.
Hasta la próxima.
Porquerolles Classiques, Sail Palma Vela and
Argentario Sailing Week.
Besides, this year our club received an invitation
to participate in the magnificent Global Team
Racing, organized by the New York Yacht Club,
and the Executive Committee is participating in
the team that will represent us in the Newport,
United States waters next October.
As usual, several members are participating in
different international events and in the Olympic
circuit: Victoria Travascio and Sol Branz, in
49erFX; Lucía Falasca, Francisco Guaragna
and Julio Alsogaray, in Laser; Inés Billoch, Lucía
Miranda, Tomás Fitte and Felipe Cosentino, in
29er, Fernando Gwozdz, in 470; Máximo Videla,
Tadeo Funes de Rioja and Facundo Guaglianone,
in Optimist; Franco and Martín Díaz Tamayo,
Costanza Biscay, Juan Agnoletti, Mateo and
Agustín Bassanetti and Felipe Blass in Cadet;
Federico Ferioli and his team in GC32, and
Agustina Castro Fau and Teresa Romairone,
in Nacra15 (the last will represent us in the
Youth Olympic Games in October in Buenos
Aires). And as a consequence of that important
international event, this year our Buenos Aires
Week (in which we are working for a while now)
is being set forward to September.
And this year, in December, we will have the honor
to present the first edition of the Magellan Cup,
event organized together with the well-regarded
Royal Yacht Squadron from England.
Last but not least, we want to let you know that
Zárate Island was renovated with new gazebos
and decks and that its generator, donated by the
Motor Yachting Committee, is working.
Until next time.
Big liberty sails
A story in first person from on board of Argentina´s insignia boat in its journey from Montevideo to Buenos Aires
and as part of Latin American Sails 2018.
Big frigates are captivating not only for its
beauty but also for its history. For that
reason, a unique and majestic spectacle
is witnessed when there are many of
them together. It is the case of Latin American
Sails that gathered seven boats this year.
The history of this event started in 2010, when
as part of Argentina´s and Chile´s bicentennial
celebrations, the South American Sails was
organized, event in which 12 big ships that
represented many other countries reached 16
ports in all the American continent.
The huge success and impact of the event
contributed in the decision of organizing it
again every four years. Thus, the program was
repeated in 2014 (organized by the Argentine
Navy) and once again took place in 2018, in this
case with Chile as organizer and with the purpose
of celebrating the two centuries of their navy.
The Latin American Sails 2018 will end up
reaching 21 ports during 157 days after having
departed from the emblematic Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil.
This journalist boarded the Frigate “Libertad” in
Montevideo and from that point, performed one
of the stages of this particular journey.
On board stories
The Frigate “Libertad” was launched in 1956
with the purpose of being a training ship; since
then, it sailed more than 800.000 nautical miles
and is the proud possessor of the speed world
record in the North Atlantic sail crossing that
tareas a bordo: puente, máquinas, cubierta,
covered over 2058 nautical miles that separate
the Cape Race in Canada up to the line between
Dublin-Liverpool in 8 days and 12 hours. This
award was bestowed in 1966 and is still valid.
“Libertad” is commanded by 26 officers that
are in charge of running each of the tasks
while sailing and in the ports. Besides, the
ship acts as the iterating ambassador of
Argentina in the world, and in each port it has
protocolar meetings, exhibitions and other
events scheduled that allow to outspread our
culture around the globe.
This year, and as part of its 47th instruction
voyage, it carries on board 76 midshipmen that
end their studies in the Naval Academy with this
trip. It is divided into two brigades –the larboard
and starboard– and during the voyage they alter
between classes and functions. While one brigade
attend the subjects left for their graduation, the
others perform different tasks on board: bridge,
engines, deck, communications, etcetera. When
they reach port, they receive visits and explain
how the ship works and what involves their stay
in the Academy. In this voyage, they will rotate
four times between the brigades so everybody
has the same amount of sailing days.
In addition, 192 non-commissioned officers
that travel on board are in charge of engines,
communications, nursery, systems, music
band, arsenal...
In its 103 length meters, the Frigate has a nurse´s
office, operating theatre, several kitchens,
engines, refrigeration chambers, bedrooms for
300 personas, comedores, salas comunes.
300 people, dining rooms, ordinary lounges. In
a few words, a small city embarked.
The last April 15, the Frigate set sail from the
port of Montevideo, while the crew sang the
Navy March. It was the last of the big ships
to set sail from the Uruguayan capital, since
previously the Gloria, from Colombia; the Simón
Bolívar, from Venezuela; the Juan Sebastián of
Elcano, from Spain; the Esmeralda, from Chile,
the Cuauhtémoc, from Mexico and the Cisne
Branco, from Brazil had set sail.
The Francisco Papa –the newest of the
Buquebus boats– had to patiently wait behind,
until it could pass it and set sail at full speed
to complete a journey that would take them
only two hours.
The engine –or “the sail 28”, as it is called in
the “Libertad”– roared and the ship –oh, what
an irony– swiftly reached the speed of 11
knots to remain in the channel that took it to
La Plata harbor.
It was a calm navigation. It was not that
windy and the sun was radiant. The traffic
of the ships in the channel was impressive,
since besides the participants of The Latin
American Sails that headed to Buenos
Aires, there were many freighters full of
containers that passed port side, probably
admiring the small fleet of big boats from
different countries.
When the crossing was with a boat of the
Argentine Navy, the crew members of both ships
neatly formed a line in the side of the boat to
EL YACHT - 11
T R A V E S Í A S
No soplaba demasiado
apuntaban a Buenos Aires, muchos buques cargueros
wave at each other: non-commissioned officers
or midshipmen left their duties –whatever they
were, even if paining something up the mast –
and they firmly positioned to receive and return
the corresponding greeting.
The commander, captain of the ship, Carlos
Núñez, guarded from the bridge every mile the
boat sailed. In addition to the strong traffic of
the channel, the water shortage threatened to
turn the Frigate into an improvised but powerful
dredger and required a lot of concentration and
an expert to sail it.
In the meantime, the non-commissioned officers
or midshipmen started the washing, painting and
general maintenance of the ship. With a steady
hand and ability, everybody has some duty to
do so that the ship reaches port as neat as if
it were a new one.
Around 10 pm, all the frigates anchored La
Plata harbor to wait for the tide. The anchoring
maneuver in the middle of the night –even
though the were stars and lights of many other
boats– is not as simple as it might seem, but
was performed with patience until they were
firmly anchored, ready to receive the 25 knots
that buzzed in during the night.
More than a vessel had to navigate in the
darkness due to the fierce wind that rose.
The next day, the movement began punctually
at 7.15 while the 25 knots kept blowing. Once
the lieutenant Martin ended to inspect the
crew, the diffuser announced the outfit that
had to be used during the day, the activities,
the departure and arrival hours to Buenos Aires
port and the birthdays.
The embellishing of the boat continued all
day long: every little corner was painted
and polished, leaving it impeccable for its
momentary return to home.
After 4 pm, the pilot who performed the entrance
to the challenging port of Buenos Aires, where
the little amount of water made that entry almost
a feat, arrived in a barge.
In the decorating process, the bunting that
honored the 44 crew members from the ARA
San Juan was hung. The Frigate will display
it in every port that reaches during the Latin
American Sails together with two signs in the
shrouds that read “44”.
In the access channel, the uniform for the
entrance was ordered: of gala, as the boat.
Two mighty vessels appeared to help with the
entry of the breathtaking Frigate to the port.
With one in prow and the other one in poop,
and the crew neatly formed, after greeting the
crowd present in the Argentine Yacht Club, the
then with the band that was waiting in land.
The group of musicians accompanied all the
Team New Zealand (ETNZ) le propinaba
Nombres, equipos, presupuestos
Hasta el momento hay cuatro equipos confirmados:
el defensor del título, Emirates Team New
Zealand, del Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron;
The America’s Cup started
The rules, protocols and some other details of the world´s
oldest competition, that will start next year and end in 2021, were announced.
Barely one year ago, at the end of June
2017, in Bermuda, the Emirates Team
New Zealand (ETNZ) soundly beat
Oracle Team USA (7-1) and knocked
them off the America´s Cup pedestal. This result
not only was a way of seeking revenge from
that incredible outcome back in 2013 in San
Francisco, when the kiwis were wining 8-1 and
held all the winning cards and however ended up
losing the Cup 9-8, but it also was a recognition
of a way of working that endeavors to constantly
innovate in the technical as in the human side.
Only a few months passed from those days of
June 2017, but the race for the 36th America´s
Cup that will be disputed in 2021 in Auckland,
New Zealand, has already started long ago. Let
us review some details of what is confirmed
for the moment and what is still pending to
be confirmed (be it that speaking of the AC,
everything can change overnight; for some
reason one of the most important members of
each team is their lawyer...)
Names, teams, budget
There are four teams confirmed so far: the
titleholder, Emirates Team New Zealand, from
the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron; the
challenger of record, the Italian Luna Rossa,
from the Circolo della Vela Sicilia; and the rival
American Magic, from the United States and
Newport o Rhode Island, Estados Unidos, y China
Cien Guineas.
representing the New York Yacht Club and the
Ineos Team UK (former Land Rover BAR), from
Great Britain, Royal Yacht Squadron Racing.
The due date to submit the entry as competitors
was June 30th (closure of this edition) and
there were three other interested teams: the
Adelasia di Torres, from Sardinia, Italy; the US
One, from United States, and the Groupama
Team France, from France.
As far as names, several historical figures
from the competition will leap into action in
the coming edition: in the ETNZ, Grant Dalton
as CEO and Blair Tuke as helmsman. Patrizio
Bertelli will be the CEO (owner of the firm Prada)
and Francesco Bruni and Jimmy Spithill crew of
the Luna Rossa. The American Magic will count
on Terry Hutchinson as skipper and Dean Barker
as helmsman. For the Ineos, Jim Ratcliffe will
be the CEO and the skipper will be the multiple
Olympic medalist Ben Ainslie.
Each of the - until now- four challengers
already paid the entry fee of 2 million dollars
plus another million dollars for the so-called
income bond, that is to say, 3 million dollars
just for admission. Regarding budget, it is
considered that each team will spend between
130 and 160 million dollars...although figures
are always a well-kept secret.
Besides, each crew will have 11 people with
a maximum weight of 990 kilograms (they
can invite a person who weighs less than
100 kilograms). And most importantly: the
nationality rule will be applied again, that
establishes that at least 20 per cent of the crew
must be true nationals of the yacht club and the
rest must reside in the yacht club´s country at
least during 380 days between September 1st
and August 31st 2020.
Farewell to multihull and bikes
From the beginning, the Defender and the
Challenger of Record agreed to go back to
monohulls. The Match Racing layout made
the essence of the Cup fade out due to the
complexity of fighting this duel with 75 feet
catamarans.
For that reason, even though the new hulls
will continue under the concept of box rule
(regulates the dimensions to guarantee the
fleet similarity but leaves room to innovate,
see next article), the mast, rigging, hydraulic
systems, foils and control systems will be
one design and provided to all by the same
supplier. As for the sails, 10 mainsails and 29
jibs can be constructed.
Additionally, each team will be allowed to build
only two boats and the launching cannot be
prior to next March 31st; the second one shall
be in the water from February 1st 2020 onwards.
And another important matter: all the maneuvers
must be performed with hands and arms,
eliminating the pedal system like bike that was
used in the last edition.
The program
Even though the dates, places and layouts (fleet
regattas or match race or a combination of both)
are not yet confirmed, the action will start by mid
next year when the first round of the America´s
Cup World Series starts; it is estimated that there
will be two commitments, probably one against
Naples and the other one in Dubai.
Other three ACWS competitions were announced
for 2020 that can be disputed in Florida, Newport
or Rhode Island, United States and China
(amongst them, the so-called Christmas Race
that will take place from 10 to 20 December this
year in Auckland).
In February 2021, the Prada Cup will be carried
out with the best of 7 regattas winner system,
and it will define the challenger of the ETNZ. The
final will be one month later, also in Auckland,
with the final match for the One Hundred
Guineas cup.
acordado utilizar algo totalmente nuevo:
un monocasco foileador de 75 pies de eslora (22,86
metros).
Defying all limits
The America´s Cup returns to monohulls with a design and format never seen before.
Whether it will work or not, we will only know after March 2019.
For the next edition of the America´s Cup,
the Defender and the First Challenger
have agreed to use something totally
new: a 75 feet foiling monohull (22,86
meters). This is a cutting-edge concept that
was never used before in the Cup, regardless of
having important similarities with the multihulls
of 2010, 2013 and 2017 editions.
It is a piecemeal solution between returning to
monohulls and maintaining high speeds and
foiling, that seemed a valuable contribution
to many people.
Every computational simulation that was
performed during months to evaluate feasibility
and to improve design shows that they can be
faster than many of the 50 feet catamarans of
the 2017 edition, that easily reached 30 knots
with only 10 knots wind.
Total innovation
The main innovation concerning the
hydrodynamic system is that there are no longer
skegs. Its functions -provide weight stability
and lateral area and horizontal sustenance to
balance aerodynamic lateral strength-, will be
in charge of two big tilting hydrofoil systems,
one for each band.
This way, without a fixed ballast, that in a boat
AUTO STABILIZING
In case of bowl over, the windward foil stabilizes the boat
No
y mejoras sólo podrán aplicarse a
Primer Defensor. De la acción conjunta de los
mismos surgieron las reglas que especifican en
of this dimension should be around 20 tons, the
displacement (boat weight) is reduced.
Those foils will only be submerged simultaneously
during beam changes maneuvers transactions.
In normal straight line navigation conditions, the
leeward foil provides lateral strength to minimize
the drift and vertical strength to stabilize the
boat and dynamically sustain it outside water.
The only helm will also have foils to supplement
vertical strength and allow navigation upon two
supporting points.
The boats will remain moored afloat in a much
more simple way than the catamarans of last
editions. In that condition, both foils systems
will remain submerged at the same time, and
its design prevents them to surpass the beam
of the boat, so it can use a normal mooring rope
for that length. It is important to mention that
both foils have a fixed ballast of 1175 kilograms
each, precisely to guarantee an adequate
stability when the boat remains afloat and is
not navigating.
When navigating, the fixed ballast of the
windward foil, that unfurls at more than 5
gangway meters, will provide weight stability
in a much more effective way than a skeg bulb
and the crew weight. What affects most the
maximum close hauled speed is the available
stabilizing moment and this is a much more
effective way to achieve it than the historical
conventional systems.
New sails too
Regarding aerodynamics, the rigid wings of the
last three editions will be eliminated, using in
return a soft wing system, double panel sails,
one for the windward and other for the leeward
sides. Also, the computational simulations
-powerful tool currently available- show that
they can achieve a similar performance to the
ones with rigid wings, that at the same time had
twice the size of conventional sails.
For that reason, the rotary mast will have in the
stern part of the boat of 40 centimeters width
two rails, one for the windward luff and another
one for the leeward luff. Each side of the sail
will have its own battens. That way, the different
flexion of the windward and leeward luffs can
be controlled and achieve a more efficient
asymmetric profile than the symmetric one.
At expected speeds, under no circumstances the
apparent wind angle will not be superior than
20 grades, as it occurred in the Cup in 2017.
Notwithstanding the foregoing, the rules
contemplate that the boats count on a rollable
zero code, much more closer to a genoa than to
a asymmetric spinnaker for mild wind conditions
in the sterns.
In case of an possible bowl over, the windward
foil extended to the fullest will provide a
sufficient stabilizing moment to return the boat
to its vertical position.
All of these concepts are extreme and
experimental and we will see later how these
new floating devices work in practice.
For this, we will have to wait until March 31st
2019, when the rules authorize the launching
of the first hulls. Each team can build only
two hulls and the possible modifications
and improvements can only be applied to
one of them.
The initial design was in charge of an
experienced team of naval engineers and
architects of New Zealand, and then twelve
other members of New Zealand and others
from Prada-Luna Rossa, the First Defender,
joined. The rules that specify in detail how
the boats should be came up from their joint
action and were published in March this year,
after four months of hard work, that in several
opportunities were 24 hours of continuous
work, leveraging from the time zone differences
between New Zealand and Italy.
It is important to mention that the Argentinean
Juan Garay, main designer of North Sails,
occupies a significant place in the Luna Rossa
design team, intervening for the fourth time
(2007, 2013, 2017 and 2021) in the maximum
competition of the world sail, that is disputed
from 1851.
catamaranes y veleros comienzan a izar velas y
Nature’s little secrets
Summer arrives in the northern hemisphere and the Caribbean becomes an irresistible temptation for sea lovers.
Catamarans and sailboats begin to raise sails and everything is colored and music.
After the devastating Atlantic hurricane
season of 2017, in which the storms
Irma and Maria struck the Caribbean
zone with unusual force, the British
Virgin Islands (BVI) are back in a significant
way and able to recover its status as an iconic
destination for lovers of yachting.
Known as “Nature’s little secrets”, the BVI remain
a virgin paradise of natural treasures. What the
islands do not have is what makes them more
attractive to the public, as there are no super
hotels or casinos, nor hundreds of tourists
wandering everywhere. The purity and natural
beauty is its main attraction. From the moment
your arrive at the destination, its topography
enchants the visitor: green hillsides, emerging
from a blue sea with crystalline beaches and the
sky with its multiple tonalities, create a perfect
welcome postcard.
More than 60 islands form a distinctive pattern
around the Sir Francis Drake Channel, including
Tortola, the main island and spine of the canal,
Virgin Gorda on the eastern tip, Jost Van Dyke
on the west, Anegada the furthest north and
in the Atlantic, and a series of smaller islands
scattered throughout the southern area. The BVI
reveal their little secrets in each bay and cays.
Located in a water paradise, the islands are
known for being the best place to practice
sailing sports, diving, snorkelling and fishing
in the Caribbean; that is why it is known as the
Capital of Sailing Sport in the World.
With a warm climate and winds between
moderate and regular, you can reach most of
the islands sailing as they are all concentrated
in a radius of 80 kilometers. In addition, you can
todas, The Baths.
rent cruises, sailboats and catamarans with or
without crew. (Tortola has the largest fleet of
rental boats in the Caribbean with about 700
units). These “floating rooms” give life to the
popular saying in the BVI of “discover your
own island”, as there are thousands of ports to
dock through all the islands, each with its own
personality, charm and secrets.
With a population of 29,000 people, only a few
islands are inhabited. With hundreds of bays,
the island of Tortola offers simple delights at
every turn: from surfing on the waves of the
Atlantic to the north of Apple and Josiah’s Bay
and sailing boat adventures in the south from
Nanny Cay to Road Harbor to meetings of the
owners of yachts in the west in the Soper’s Hole
and the energetic Cane Garden Bay. Tortola is
the most inhabited island and where 80 percent
of the islanders live.
Just 12 miles from Tortola is Virgin Gorda, best
known for its art works of nature, including the
uninhabited beaches of Savannah Bay, Pond
Bay, Devil’s Bay, Mahoe Bay or Spring Bay and
the most spectacular of all, The Baths . Whose
mysterious origins are believed to date from the
beginning of evolution, large rocks of volcanic
origin scattered through the white sand, form
caverns and crevices full of small pools of crystal
clear sea water.
Named by a Dutch pirate who lived there, Jost
Van Dyke is another of the main destination
islands. It has rugged landscapes and colorful
folklore. Ideal to explore its ruins of the sugar
mill covered with vegetation, ancient roads that
cross the island, the natural Jacuzzi formed by
the sea or observe the dolphins and whales that
look out over the surroundings of the island.
The island of Anegada, the furthest of all
and on the Atlantic Ocean, calls visitors to
enjoy spectacular sunsets, succulent feasts
of lobsters; It challenges the sailor more
experiment to navigate outside the protection
of the Sir Frances Drake Channel and opens the
doors to 37 kilometers of virgin and uninhabited
beaches.
Island Resort, Peter Island Resort, Cooper Island,
Anegada Reef Hotel y Anegada Beach Club.
The Moorings, Marine Max, Sunsail y Horizon.
Thomas, Antigua y St. Maarten. Además, varias de
las principales líneas aéreas vuelan desde Miami
o Ciudad de Panamá.
modest hostel and high quality hostels to private
luxury hotels that comprise a complete island,
all without much pretension but complementing
the natural beauty of the islands.
In the BVI, there are resort islands such as Scrub
Island Resort, Peter Island Resort, Cooper Island,
Necker Island and Guana Island, each with
its style and appeal, with the same feeling of
exclusivity and absolute privacy.
In Anegada, the lodges are picturesque and
operated by islanders from the area, whose
families have been there for generations,
including the main hotel on the island with 20
rooms, Anegada Reef Hotel and Anegada Beach
Club. The last one, not only has hotel rooms but
recently incorporated the possibility of staying
in luxury tents on the beach. A new concept of
natural luxury. As for accommodation on board,
BVI is not known as “the capital of sailing” and
hence have an offer of 1860 cabins available
through companies such as The Moorings ,
Marine Max, Sunsail and Horizon.
On the other hand, the gastronomy of the
place offers a mixture of Caribbean style with
continental influences that is reflected in an
authentic and unique food, like the tasty roti
(made with chickpea flour, salt and water, and
stuffed with meat or vegetables) to fungi (made
with cornmeal), similar to Italian polenta. In
Anegada, the main course is the succulent
lobster from Anegada, prepared in old drums
of oil turned into grills. The gastronomic month
par excellence in the destination, is November,
with several festivals such as the Taste of the
BVI (the 3, in Tortola, and the 17th of the same
month in Virgin Gorda) or the Festival of the
Lobster (from 24 to 27, in Anegada). In addition,
all the islands have emblematic restaurants
that stand out for their specialties. In Jost Van
Dyke is Soggy Dollar Bar, responsible for the
creation of the famous drink of fate, the PainKiller
(based on rum, coconut cream, pineapple and
orange juice).
Get there
How to get to the BVI is quite simple. By
plane, there are connections by Cape Air, LIAT,
InterCaribbean Airways and Seaborne Airlines
from San Juan, St. Thomas, Antigua and St.
Maarten. In addition, several of the main airlines
fly from Miami or Panama City.
Debevec Mayer, Oriana Favaro y Susana Cardonnet,
Quinto Concurso Internacional Luciano Pavarotti,
Aída, Rigoletto, Don Carlo, La Traviata y Tosca.
A not to be missed season
The meetings called by the subcommittee had a great repercussion
due to the sky-high level of the programs that were organized.
The cultural events of the Club are recognized
for their level of excellence by the fellow
members and also by their guests.
With a varied and balanced agenda, this
year´s order of business is not an exception:
the Ragtime, with Ezequiel Pallejá, Juan Manuel
Cafferata and Franco Zacarías; the Petrus
Quartet Concert; the Extraordinary Concert,
with Javier Ares Yebra; The Luxury Lyric Gala,
with Lucas Debevec Mayer, Oriana Favaro and
Susana Cardonnet, and nothing less than the
Zarzuela´s Lyric Gala, with the Argentine baritone
Leonardo López Linares had already passed
through our place.
All of the meetings, sponsored by Rojas and
Ganado, Zoloda, Embassy of Spain, Fundación
Telefónica (Telephonic Foundation), Galicia
Éminent, D’Alessio IROL, Marsh and Compañía
General de Hacienda (General Estate Company),
expected a well-stocked attendance that was
captivated by the level and talent shown by
the artists.
It is important to highlight the presence of
Leonardo López Linares, a true talent of the
Argentine opera. Born in Buenos Aires 46 years
ago, he started to sing since he was very little,
following his parents´ influence, the soprano Iris
Cánepa and the also baritone Pedro Linares. His
debut was at 14 years old in the Municipal Theatre
of Viña del Mar, Chile, with “Zarzuela anthology”.
At 20, he joined the permanent choir of the
Colón Theatre and when he was barely 22 years
old, he had his first international performance,
“The Pigeon´s open air dance”, in the Theater
of the Zarzuela in Madrid. In 1993, he won the
Fifth International Contest Luciano Pavarotti, in
Philadelphia, United States, in which he received
the award from the very same Italian tenor, who
invited him to share the stage in the “Opera
Extravaganza” show, playing the character of
Marcello in “La Bohéme”.
From then on, he demonstrated his talent in
the most important concert halls of Argentina
and the world, among them, the magnificent
Arena de Verona or our Colón Theatre (where
he debuted as soloist in 1997 in “El Barbero de
Sevilla”), interpreting leading parts in operas
such as Nabucco, Aída, Rigoletto, Don Carlo, La
Traviata and Tosca. Winner of several national
and international awards, López Linares believes
that “different from what many people think, we
must revive from the opera in our country as
well as in the world. Even though this revival
occurs slowly, the important thing is for it to
happen, since for many years it experienced a
setback not only in public attendance but also
in theatre show offers. That is why I reckon that
it is important to get people and opera closer and
specially young people, since we have to create
the taste for this type of music”.
Although he is an adaptable interpreter, he always
has time for the zarzuela, a genre to which he
always comes back and with which he delighted
us in the Club. “The zarzuela is part of my life, my
parents instilled it since I was so young. For me, it
is an utterly interesting genre, that blends music
with theatre and with the typical Spanish slyness”,
he confessed in an interview some time ago.
What is left of the season
Follows the agenda for the rest of the year:
On July 18, the piano and violin Duet of Sebastián
Masci (violin) and Maestro Valicora (piano)
will perform.
On August 9, a piano concert paying tribute to
Federico Chopin will take place, in charge of the
pianist master José Luis Juri.
On September 19, the Gianneo Quartet will play.
On October 17, the Spring Gala will be held with
famous opera arias in charge of Duilio Smiriglia
(tenor), Oriana Favoro (soprano) and a pianist
that still needs to be defined.
In November, date to be confirmed, will be
the traditional Rolex Gala, a jazz concert with
Dixie Band.
The closure of the cycle 2018, also with
pending date, will be led by Maroma Orchestra
(Tango), directed by Rodolfo Roballos and the
honorary direction of Rodolfo Mederos and the
participation of 17 dancing and singing artists.
En conserva fueron el Boat In, Black Swan, Cygnus,
El Palomo, Freedom, Nero, Punta Cuadrada, Rainbow,
Relax, Veramar, Viejo Lobo y Kir.
navales escoltando cargueros norteamericanos
encuentro cercano
con un supuesto
cosario (esta página)
Veinte horas después, los dos españoles tomaron
su primera guardia.
Por la corriente adversa, Nueva York quedaba 150
millas a popa.
saliente bajó a desayunar.
Back in the 40s (part 4)
On 14 August 1940 at 8pm, a pilot boarded
the Quillén. They promptly cast-off
and, with the help of two tugboats, the
boat started to follow the channels
of the Hudson river between New Jersey and
Manhattan.
Passing through the Statue of Liberty and
Governors Island, they entered the upper part
of the bay between New Jersey, Brooklyn and
Staten Island to exit through the Narrows strait
and continue through the Ambrose channel, that
in the south of Coney Island it turns 117° the
direction until it leads in the Atlantic in a heavy
traffic zone. At the end of the channel, the pilot
transhipped to a special boat of the New Yorker
port administration and the boat set out to the
South until it reached cruising speed of 10 knots.
Now, the crew mentioned with apprehension
the number of ships and airplanes of the US
Navy and of the US Coastal Guard that came
back and forth –all of them headed South or
North– blended into the well-stocked coastal
and overseas traffic.
Between April and June, Germany had taken
over the European seashore from Norway to
France and now they contended in the British
skies before the disembark in the English coast.
Even though United States was still neutral, its
different types of sales and shipping to England
had put them in the “non-warring” category. On
12 September 1939 –9 days after the Second
World War started– president Roosevelt ordered
the Neutrality Patrol with naval units escorting
North American freighters to Canada. Since
October 1939, the US Navy also patrolled the
Maritime Neutrality Zone delimited from Boston
to the East up to 065° W and to the South up
to 300 miles from the South American coast,
informing in a clear language through the public
channel the sighting of war ships (specially
German ones). Back in those days, the North
American and Caribbean waters were already
closer to war than to peace.
Twenty hours later, the two Spanish men made
their first guard.
By the contrary current, New York was 150
miles sternward. During the first hour, one of the
Uruguayans steered, showing Pepe´s friend the
boat´s knacks. During the next hour, while his
friend ran the wheel and taught him the behavior
of the ship, both were presented to the captain,
man of few words that wore a shirt, with no
braids and bare head, with his hair carefully
brushed and shaved. At 6 pm, Pepe steered
while a blazing sun rose larboard.
The boat moved forward very steady in favor
of the gentle swell shoved along by a moderate
breeze from the NW. The screw was moved by an
alternative machine of three cylinders pushed
by the vapor of two caldrons, a very simple and
robust system that maintained the average 10
knots with few fuel oil consumption.
The Quillén barely rocked and keeled a little.
Quite sensitive, with a quarter of the wheel
towards a side, the compass started to change
course. The steer hour went by fast for Pepe,
surprised when the other Uruguayan replaced
him. With a succinct “a hundred and eighty”,
he left the trunnel and went towards the prow
deck to stand in for his friend in the surveillance
position. Six strokes announced that an hour
was left for the replacement.
At 7.45, the members of the other guard started
to arrive at the bridge. After brief greetings, the
outgoing foursome went down for breakfast.
At 10, they crossed the gulf current 200 miles to
the NE of the Cape Hatteras. All of a sudden, the
water temperature increased to 24°C, as well as
the saline fragrance and humidity. The greenish
gray of the Atlantic over the continent platform
contrasted without blending with an immense
dark blue belt over which some cumulus
appeared. That 60 miles width stripe constantly
advances towards the NW at an average of 4
knots (85 millions of m3 per second) against
the edge of the North American platform to
the Grand Banks of Newfoundland where the
Labrador current, colder and thicker, alters the
course of the hot water to the East up to Barents
Sea, at the North of Russia, except an important
part that at the middle of the journey through the
North Atlantic detaches to the South.
With good weather conditions, the boat kept its
direction for two days until it almost reached
the Bahamas, where the course changed the
direction to the East to penetrate into the
medium Atlantic, where the captain estimated
that war would not have a lot of activity due
to a more dispersed traffic. He called “30-30”
at the beginning of the course, with the first
leg in the meridian 030W and the second in
the parallel 30N.
On the fifth day of the journey, the meridian
observations indicated that the boat was
crossing the great submarine trench of Bermuda
(10 kilometers above the bottom).
Heading 090°, the sun barely came up larboard
over the prow beam and sank on the prow flap,
since its orbit plane was still over the North
hemisphere, being 33 days away for the orbital
plane to intersect the equator plane during the
Libra equinox.
On depth waters, the blue of the sea became
more intense but the fauna ceased to exist.
Like in a desert, the landscape only showed
the half of horizon between cobalt blue and
the other half intense light blue. The good
–Which ship? Where to?
conditions remained under a vast center of
high pressure with no clouds and soft breeze
from the East. During the boreal summer, they
sailed close to the Intertropical Convergence
Zone (ITCZ).
In some occasions, another boat was sighted in
the horizon and the course was automatically
deviated to move away as much as possible,
attained when the other was a merchantman
and did the same.
Some other times, the spotted boat accelerated
and moved closer with collision course, only
showing its front profile, a dense blackened
smoke plume and an enormous foam mustache
under its prow armament.
Ninety times out of a hundred, it was a destroyer
or a light English cruise hoisting signal flags,
that were illegible since they waved to stern, and
giving Morse signals with a reflector that nobody
could understand while the guard officer first
raised the Argentine flag, then ordered to reduce
engine and only then informed the captain.
Invariably, someone from the radio arrived to
the bridge delivering a piece of paper written
in pencil to the guard head officer:
–Which ship? Where to?
The captain, still panting, always exclaimed:
– But do those guys know how to read? Why
have we painted both sides? Please, Arias,
go to the radio and talk to the gringos to
see what the hell they want. Flag to the top,
right? M signal too.
Soon after, the first officer called the bridge from
the radio room. The captain listened through the
telephone and answered with an “OK”. The other
people in the bridge found out what happened
according to what the captain ordered “half
engine forward to course 090”, or if he grumbled
again and kept the ship motionless.
By a stroke of luck, no setback occurred, but
some days after, a freighter took a detour from
the horizon and got closer to the wake of the
Quillén without any communication but with
lots of staff watching through binoculars from
the masts and gear.
The captain ordered to pretend as if the stranger
did not exist and both boats sailed like that in a
row at 10 knots heading to the East for a while
until another ship appeared and went away
following its original course.
–Radio, ¿any news?
–Not a word, captain. Nothing.
–We must have had a guardian angel. It was
a pirate ship for sure. But we will never know
from which side.
– Mintaka was written in its prow.
–They never show their real name.
–Shall I send raider alert with our coordinates?
–Don´t you dare! They’d sink us immediately.
In the eight journey, the barometer quickly begun
to drop under an overcast sky that continued to
go dark. The oppressive calm left a sea with no
waves, where the boat advanced like in the air,
without rocking or keeling. Nobody got excited.
The storm was coming.
Always valid
In its 61st edition, the journey to the seaside city of Buenos Aires had the habitual spice. The Fjord VI won the
general of the ORC Formula.
The oceanic Buenos Aires-Mar del Plata
Regatta tends to be rigorous and present
changing conditions. And the one that
took place this year was not an exception:
12 out of the 22 ships enrolled for this 61st
edition (11 in ORC Formula and some others
in the Doubles Crew) docked the beach city.
This test, sponsored by Galicia Éminent, is one of
the oldest in our country and is still valid since it
is one of the few that allows to sail during several
days in the Atlantic Ocean waters.
The kickoff was already complicated: after being
delayed in land for an hour due to the weather
conditions, the departure signal was finally given
at 14.20 on Friday 9 February. While the boats
started to get closer to the line, the wind blew
at between 17 and 22 knots from the East, with
lots of short waves and increasing current. But
fortunately, a few minutes before departing, the
gust eased and the wind turned to the ESE to
settle in 8 knots. Under that condition, there was
only one departure. From that point, the ships
started their journey to Mar del Plata.
During the next hours, the fleet experienced
changing winds and the passage of several
fronts, which made the situation highly
challenging.
On Sunday, the first ships started to arrive. The
winner of the Blue Ribbon was the Tata, crewed
by Quique Campolo and Cristian Pfisterer, of the
Quilmes Yacht Club, that made it at 19.56.32
on Sunday.
“We just finished a regatta that was ideal,
because of the results and of how it went. We
are utterly happy”, said Campolo while they
finished accommodating the boat in the navy
of Mar del Plata Yacht Club.
The rest of the ships docked during the night
and almost until Monday 8 am.
In the General Classification of ORC Club the
Fjord VI, flagship of the Argentine Yacht Club in
granny knots, and this provides an important
management for this type of regattas. The new
Un desafío extremo
A
foque y spinnaker), Renato Conde (floater), Diego
Stefani (YCA, coach y trimmer) y Jorge Ferioli (YCA,
team driver y safety officer).
An extreme challenge
The members of the Code Red Racing participating in the first date of the tough international circuit GC32 Racing
Tour, reserved for the flying catamarans of the GC32 class.
At the beginning of 2013, Federico Ferioli
and Lucas González Smith decided
to create the Code Red Racing (CRR)
to compete in different categories
and championships of multihull sailboats.
Four seasons later, at the beginning of 2017,
they faced a more ambitious and demanding
project: they put together a boat of GC32 Class
(foiling catamaran of 32 feet length for five crew
members) and started to participate in the GC32
Racing Tour –the most challenging regatta
circuit of the world for this class– that started
5 years ago and in which almost a dozen boats
from the five continents race.
“This is an utterly important project. Creating it
from scratch implied looking after a huge number
of things so that every detail would work as we
expected to. All this adds up to the fact that for us
it was twice as difficult since in Argentina we are
so far away from the main competition centers of
the world. However, without a doubt, we came up
to it”, stated Federico Ferioli. And he added: “It is
our inspiration that leads us to tackle challenges
and made possible the impossible. We believe in
honesty, humility, commitment, responsibility and
comradeship as the essential formula to be the
best team in the sport and in life.”
Thus, the CRR not only became the first
Argentine team but also the pioneer of the
continent participating in this category.
Besides Ferioli (YCA (Argentine Yacht Club),
helmsman) and Gonzaléz Smith (YCA, team
manager and tactician), the CRR is formed
by Jordán Rivas (YCA, boat captain and bow),
the Guatemalan Jason Hess (jib trimmer and
spinnaker), Renato Conde (floater), Diego Stefani
(YCA, coach and trimmer) and Jorge Ferioli (YCA,
team driver and safety officer).
After some incursions during the last year in
that Circuit, this summer the CRR performed
an intensive training in Punta del Este, Uruguay,
with views to the calendar of this year. The first
appointment in which he participated was in
Laos, Portugal, from June 27 to July 1st (closure
of this edition).
Those trainings were very intense and productive
and useful to obtain significant progress, not
only in the boat handling but also in what is
related to fine-tuning and, fundamentally, in
getting the speed”, told Ferioli.
“We expect to have a growth for the season that
gives us the opportunity to reach the middle of
the circuit with chances to fight for a podium”,
González Smith said. “We haven´t had activity for
several months, since our season ended some
time ago, but we hope to have a fast growth so
we can catch up. The team is a very solid one
and we are really happy for the performance we
achieved as well as for how we adapted to each
of the positions”.
“From 2017 until today, the biggest change
is that we now have a strong team. Last year,
we were just starting in the Class, building
the team. We are now six crew members, an
excellent number for this boat. Jorge will be
joining us depending on the events and is
always of great help when it comes to security.
With this team, we accomplished a stability
that will help us to face this season. Besides,
the ship already has a fine-tuning and that will
save a lot of time before the regattas. The only
thing left is to go, build it and set sail”, González
Smith mentioned.
Clearly there is more to this, since one of the
objectives of the team is to drive and lead the
sport practice of CG32 in Latin America, an
initiative that aims to bring more young people
to this type of swift and extreme boats.
Among the following commitments for the CRR,
appears the 37° Cup of Mapfre King, from July
31 to August 4, in Palma de Mallorca, Spain;
the Villasimius Cup, on Septembre 12 to 16, in
Sardinia, Italy and the TMP Med Cup, on October
11 to 14, in Toulon, France.
As happens every year, the last edition of the traditional competition that has place
in front of the branch of Mar del Plata had an exceptional call.
Year after year, during summer, the city of
Mar del Plata receives millions of tourists
in quest of sun, beach and fun. But it also
receives several hundred of navigators
during the first weeks of February coming from
different parts of the world to participate in one
of the most competitive tournaments of the
annual monotype calendar, the International
From that first edition, this event, organized by the
Argentine Yacht Club together with the Mar del
Plata Yacht Club since 1966, had only grown until
it became a sports success that gathers more
than 700 navigators from different countries.
The 53rd edition occurred between February 3
and 10 and there were conditions that suited all
preferences. 630 navigators split in 14 classes
“Tuvo
condiciones variadas. Me encanta navegar acá, me
The tournament offers an additional
flavor: it is the first opportunity in
which many of the young navigators
used to sailing in our de la Plata
in the sea. For that reason, the
members of Optimist that are for
this important occasion for every
Una de las competencias más divertidas
que tiene nuestro Club es el Campeonato
Yacht Club Argentino, cuya segunda
New York Yacht Club: Eugenia Jasson Hardie, Rocío
The second date of the internal championship had optimal conditions and a very special camaraderie weather.
One of the most entertaining
competences of our Club is the
Argentine Yacht Club Championship,
of which the second date was disputed
on Saturday 2 June.
As usual, the day started early, with the
traditional breakfast in the Social Building for
the crew members of the 23 boats enrolled in
the ORC Club, ORC Sportboard, Doubles Crew,
Reduced Crew and Classic Vessels Formulas.
Then, the competitors departed towards the
regatta race course, prepared in front of the
port of Buenos Aires.
With excellent sailing conditions –it started
with 16 knots wind from the South-southwest
and decreased to 14 knots and little wave– the
test comprised a fixed marks journey of 9,7
nautical miles.
To highlight, our Fjord VI, steered by Jorge
Jáuregui, participated with several young men
that represented the Club on the next New
York Yacht Club event: Eugenia JassonHardie,
Rocío Álvarez Gallesio, Carlos Tortonese, Dante
Cervi, Iñaki Arroyo, Ezequiel Cousillas and
Emiliana López.
After the test, the classic third time was
performed, followed by the awards celebration
in an excellent camaraderie environment and in
which, besides, recognitions were given to the
youngest participants.
Baquerizas y Gabriel Cozar a quienes acompañan
Marcos Cuenca, Sebastián Rodríguez, Augusto
Cortina, Solano Leira y el chileno Carlos Vergara.
Además, suelen contar con otros tripulantes que
complementan la tripulación en algunos eventos.
Dos momentos del
Cippino en acción en
Porquerolles, Francia
clase Epoque Marconi C.
The Cippino lectures in Europe
Daniel Sielecki´s boat is performing a brillant campaing in the Old Continent: in the three championships that he
disputed, it enshrined in its category.
It is known that the summer season in Europe
is a synonym of huge championships and
demanding regattas. It is also known that
classic boats competences there, use to
gather the most notable of the Old Continent´s
art of navigation in a unique spectacle, since so
many ships full of history gathered in the same
place can only be seen a few times.
In this context, the Cippino, of Daniel Sielecki
(partner of the Club), is having an outstanding
performance: at the end of this edition he had
already competed in three contests, easily
prevailing in all of them. A job that is not only
a reason for being proud, but also represents a
very high point for our yachting.
Cannes y St. Tropez.
Cristóbal and Germán Billoch, Eduardo Baquerizas
Cuenca, Sebastián Rodríguez, Augusto Cortina,
Solano Leira and the Chileano Carlos Vergara.
Besides, they usually count on other crew members
that complement the crew in some events.
“The boat as well as the crew are working
very well. We have several well-known rivals
from previous seasons that although they
have different measures and may be in other
categories, we know that for the general
classification they compete with us. Thus, all
the regattas are being defined by a few seconds
and any error on board, like getting the wrong
sail or a bad maneuver or choosing the wrong
side of the course race, makes you lose”, said
Germán Billoch.
The first date for the Argentine boat was in Les
Voiles d´Antibes, in Antibes, France, where four
regattas of medium to slight winds were raced.
In a general fleet of 79 ships, the Cippino ended
up unbeaten, winning all the regattas of the
Epoque Marconi C class.
The second event was the Porquerolles Classic, in
Porquerolles Island, close to the south of Hyères,
where three regattas were disputed. With two
first positions and a third one, the Cippino won
its series Epoque Classic among other 25 boats
and a fleet of almost half hundred of competitors.
In the third one, the Argentario Sailing Week,
disputed in Argentario, Italy, the Cippino got four
first positions in other regattas among the Vintage
Marconi B, category in which 12 ships raced.
“There is a little bit of everything in this fleet, but
the first five of each category are really good,
since they have people who raced Olympic
games or who do campaigns in big ships for
a long time, which is why we are truly happy
with the results achieved so far”, Billoch said.
An actual remarkable, impeccable job. After
this championship, some other tournaments
in Naples, Mahon, Palma de Mallorca, Cannes
and St. Tropez are waiting for the Cippino.
Internacional (8), ORC Club (24), ORC Club Tripulaciones
When the wind was up to his old tricks
The development of the Metropolitan Championship was distraught by calm and delays; however, the program
was almost completed for every formula.
On Saturday 12 May, the first stage of the
Metropolitan Championship –although
with some difficulties– was released. It
was organized between the Argentine
Yacht Club and the San Isidro Yacht Club, and
sponsored by Buquebus.
The program anticipated a regatta like a cruise
to Colonia (the departure on Saturday, the return
on Sunday), two windward-leeward journeys and
one fixed-mark near the North Dock office of the
YCA (Argentine Yacht Club).
There were 60 ships of the ORC
international (8), ORC Club (24), ORC Club
doubles crew (3), Classic (6), Vintage (1),
PHRF (13) and Reduced Crew (5) Formulas
of competitions– participating in this
classic tournament.
On the first Saturday, the wind put up a fight;
such was the case that after a long deferral
waiting for the wind to blow, the starting line
was moved to the proximity of the kilometer
19 of the access channel to the port of Buenos
Aires, where a breeze of 5 to 7 knots allowed
to give the departure signal.
“After more than a week with rainy weather,
the sun finally emerged and stayed with us
during the whole regatta. The kickoff was
planned for Saturday but postponed due to
the lack of wind. With a good resolution from
the Regatta Committee, we moved away from
the shore up to the kilometer 19 buoy, where
a breeze blew and made the kickoff possible.
edificio Corna A. Badaracco.
y Manuel Meroni.
Fortunately! We were all highly excited to get
to Colonia. Once there, we enjoyed a beer
meeting offered by the organization that
was really fun”, related Eugenia Jasson, crew
member of the Fjord VI, one of the insignia
boats of our Club.
The return was not far from what had happened
in the first journey: there were also long waiting
moments until finally the slight Northeast winds
(that then became stronger), brought the fleet
back to Buenos Aires.
“It was a very calm but long sailing”, said
Mercedes Zarich, from the Milagros. “When
coming back, the kickoff was delayed due to
the departure of the one of Buquebus and, to
make matters worse, the arrival at the YCA
became a sort of obstacle course due to the
fact that a freighter was arriving to the port
and two dredges were leaving...That made it
more entertaining!”, she added.
In front of the Club
The following weekend, the tournament
continued with the windward-leeward journeys
and fixed marks.
On Saturday the wind-lee took place: they were
three for ORC International, two for ORC Club
and one for Classic. This time, the wind was an
ally (between 15 and 19 knots blew from south
east and south-southeast) and all the events
were completed normally.
But on Sunday, Eolo again got away with
it and complicated things again. Barely 6
knots from the South made the planned
journey of 11 nautical miles shorten so that
competitors could complete the regatta on
the expected time. However, due to that
scarcity, the regatta was canceled for the
Five premium SUV to choose from
In the medium vehicles market, the offer is large and assorted. Here are some
of the best exponents available in our country.
It is not new that in late years the sport utility
vehicles (SUV) had been in fashion in the
world. In fact, even the brands that have
historically been a synonym of purely sport
cars (like Masserati, Porsche or Ferrari) had to
adapt to the times and join the trend, to the
extent that those multipurposes not only almost
extinguished the rural antiques and minivans,
but also –and gradually– are displacing the
classic sedans.
And that has to do with the space and comfort
they offer, and also with their characteristic
versatility and features, since they adjust to
the urban use as well as to long travels and in
off-road incursions.
Small, compact, medium or big; with simple or
all-wheel drive; gas or diesel, the market has
each time a more varied and plentiful offer.
As regards the premium sector, the decision
is truly complicated since all of them offer a
supreme level of equipment, comfort, safety
and mechanics.
We have selected five medium models (the
named D sector) to review and compare.
Mercedes-Benz GLC 300
Launched in our country a little more than a year
ago, the new generation of this medium GLC SUV
came to replace the GLK that has been sold in
our country since 2011.
Manufactured in Germany, it is based in
Class C platform and it has a completely
different esthetic aspect than the GLK class,
so as to definitely leave its predecessor behind.
Unlike it, the GLC lines are round, harmonious,
smooth and stylish, much more attractive
than the squared and faceted prior generation.
The interior is sober, refined and classy, with a
complete equipment, just to mention some: 8”
floating touch screen, seat heater, panoramic
sunroof with electric control, cruising speed control
with limiter, Head Up Display (projects the on board
computer´s information in the windshield) and the
parking assistant Parktronik, that not only shows a
360° panorama, but it also parks by itself.
As regards mechanics, the previous engines V6
3.0 L had been replaced by the 4-cylinder turbo,
intercooler and direct injection of 2.0 L cylinder
capacity, 241 HP and 370 torque Nm between
1200 and 4000 rpm, with 9 speed automatic
transmission and all-wheel drive 4Matic, that
allows to save combustible and also contributes
to a more relaxed get around.
BMW X3
El precio: entre US$ 66.000 y US$ 110.000.
66 - EL YACHT
Volvo XC60
Los valores: T5 Momentum, US$ 86.900 dólares;
T6 Inscription, US$ 104.900.
BMW X3
This model of the Bavarian brand started to be
sold in our country in 2011. There are already three
generations and now it is imported from the plant
that the firm has in Spartanburg, Unites States.
Compared to the previous model, this generation
comes with several modifications. For instance,
all its sizes changed: it measures 4.70 m long
(increased 56 mm), 1.89 width (increased7 mm)
and 1.67 tall (decreased 37 mm to increase grip)
and the distance between axles is 2.86 (also
increased 54 mm).
It also handsel new motors that besides
increasing the power, they spend less
combustible.
Thus, the gas versions xDrive30i of inline
4-cylinder, 2.0 L turbo that generate 252 HP
and 350Mn and the xDriveM40i one of inline
6-cylinder, 3.0 L turbo and 360 HP and 500 Nm
of torque are available.
In both cases, they are associated to 8-speed
automatic transmission Steptronic with torque
converter and all-wheel automatic drive xDrive.
We can highlight from its complete equipment
that this is the second BMW model in Argentina
(after Series 5) that has a gesture recognition
system. That is: it is no longer needed to touch
buttons or knobs, because through sensors
installed in the 12,5” multimedia screen and in
other parts of the cabin, the system recognizes
certain gestures, such as raise, change, move
forward, etc.
The price: between US$ 66.000 and US$ 110.000.
Volvo XC60
In between the XC90 and the XC40, this Swedish
brand medium multipurpose has been sold in our
country for nine years already, and at the end
of 2017 the second generation was presented.
It is imported from Belgium and it is a perfect
synthesis of what Volvo means: safety, comfort,
design and technology.
There are two versions available: T5 Momentum,
with 4-cylinder gas engine 2.0 L turbo that
generates 254 HP and 350 Nm of torque; and
T6 Inscription, with the same 2.0 turbo and
compressor that spends 320 HP and 400 Nm.
Both have 8 speed automatic transmission and
permanent all-wheel drive.
The best of this model are the safety systems
(seven airbags, parking sensors, reverse camera,
drive and stability controls, ABS, EBD, ESP, etc.)
and semi-automatic transmission like the Pilot
Assist, a sort of adaptive cruising speed control
that, besides, keeps the direction, acceleration
and brake with respect to the vehicle ahead
and a speed up to 130 km/h, which is truly
useful for long trips in routes and freeways.
In addition, the City Safety is added, making
use of the emergency break when it detects a
possible collision or when a pedestrian crosses
unexpectedly thanks to different sensors and
cameras. Ergo, a sample of what will be driving
a vehicle in a near future.
The prices: T5 Momentum, US$ 86.900; T6
Inscription, US$ 104.900.
Audi Q5
Launched in our country in the Automobile
medium sport utility of the rings brand. In its
second generation –currently in the market–
it comes imported from Mexico instead of
Germany, and that is why its price is a little lower
Audi Q5
Los precios: 2.0 L, US$ 78.600; 3.0 L, US$ 104.400,
Range Rover Evoque
104.900; 5 Puertas Nafta HSE, US$ 119.900; 5
Puertas Nafta HSE Plus, US$ 127.900; 5 Puertas
Nafta HSE Dynamic, US$ 136.900; 5 Puertas Diésel
HSE, US$ 135.900, y 3 Puertas Coupé Nafta HSE
Dynamic, US$ 139.900.
since it is tax free, whether vehicles produced in
other parts of the world do pay taxes.
It shows several considerable changes, like
bigger dimensions, a renovated interior,
technology adds and a design that resembles
his old brother Q7.
Mechanically speaking, it offers two versions,
both with gas engines turbo (the model
with turbo diesel is no longer available): the
4-cylinder 2.0 L TFSi, 252 HP and 370 Nm of
torque, and the SQ5, with V6 driving force 3.0
L TFSi of 354 HP and 500 Nm; both with the
excellent S-Tronic automatic transmission
of double clutch (of 7 gears for 2.0 and 8 for
SQ5). It has permanent all-wheel drive quattro.
On top of that, it adds a version armored
from factory called Security, that possesses
protection level RB4.
Some of the comfort details included are the
excellent Bang & Olufsen audio system, digital
board with Virtual Cockpit, voice control,
predictive navigation assistant (memorizes
the driver´s habits and paths, thus determines
the best possible routes), double touch screen
and a lot more.
The prices: 2.0 L, US$ 78.600; 3.0 L, US$ 104.400
and Security, US$ 154.000.
Range Rover Evoque
If there exists a synonym for all-terrain, that is
Land Rover. And among its multiple offer, we
find the Range Rover Evoque, the compact
model that we enjoy since 2011 and even has
a coupe version.
Manufactured in England, it has a modern and
captivating esthetics, that makes it easily stand
out from the other models of the brand and from
its competitors, and also makes it one of the
most venerated of the section.
In the last restyling, it maintained the two
motorizations: with gas driving force 2.0 L
turbo of 240 HP and with turbo diesel drive 2.2
L of 190 HP. But the news is that now it has a
9 speed ZF sequential transmission. All-wheel
and permanent drive.
In addition to having several driving assistants
and a great equipment (like a new multimedia
screen with series GPS and Meridian audio
gadget with 11 loudspeakers and 380 watts),
it has the novel All-Terrain Progress Control
system, that allows the driver to program and
maintain the constant speed of the vehicle in
difficult driving conditions (similar to a cruising
control at slow speed).
Prices are: 5 doors Gas SE Plus, US$ 104.900;
With the same old charm
Not many championships in this continent have the call that the Circuit has. The Cioula, the Ladino Millennial, the
Bluecross & Blueshield and the Chapulín, the winners.
Nobody can doubt that, since about
several decades, the South Atlantic
Rolex Cup Circuit is the most convening
and renowned event of the nautical
calendar of South America for keelboats. It is
just that a few championships have the privilege
to gather during one week and in one place the
largest sailboat fleet formula of this part of the
world, in a unique competence that combines
a high sports level with an extraordinary
context –like the Uruguayan coasts– and an
intense social life.
And this year was not an exception: organized
by the Club together with Olivos Yacht Club,
Yacht Club and under the exclusive sponsorship
of Rolex, 60 ships of the ORC International (16
sailboats), ORC Club (29) and IRC (15) Formulas,
from Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil, participated
in this opportunity, to which 20 other boats joined
from the J70 International Class.
The formula ships disputed seven regattas of
medium and large distance and between buoys,
while the J70 International Class ran 6 windwardleeward
tests and one of medium distance.
And after a week of tough competence, in
which changing wind conditions prevailed and
competitors were demanded to the fullest,
the new champions were the Brazilian Crioula
del TrendingTopic Johnny B. Good.
the Pericles II and the Tolerancia Cero, of
Jorge Ibarborde.
“Predictably, the championship was great. It
is a very entertaining course race, with nice
wind to sail. What is more, the environment,
the opportunity to run into people you know
from different places and always meet them
in this same place once a year. That is
another thing we value, besides the regattas,
obviously. We started great and went downhill
these days, with some breaks”, mentioned
Jochi Arigós, crew member of TrendingTopic
Johnny B. Good.
In the J70 Class, the winner was the Uruguayan
