“EL CAMINO A LA
SOLEDAD”
INTERVIEW TO
IRENE DEL
CASTILLO &
JOHN AGUDELO
“Our budget was symbolic, that’s
to say we didn’t have exactly numbers
to determine the wage of
each person who participated in
the realization.”
By Jose Girón
How was preproduction phase?
John Agudelo: In order to
understand the aspects on any
movie, no matter if is a short
film, long film or documentary,
first our ideas must be written
in paper, then we write the
script, next we plan the budget,
after that we realize all
the movie in paper; finally, the
idea becomes on a stable project
(here we are going to look
for funds). Once the money is
gotten we proceed to realize
logistics and production.
We delayed about four months
in preproduction of the short
film. Fortunately, we were
benefited by Culture Ministry
who gave us the “Creation
Stimulus Award INI” a program
which supports films and
audiovisual creation along different
regions. Thanks to this
award was possible to realize
the short film.
Then, we had to get the actors,
talk to them, they are serious
people with a lot of experience
in Colombian movies. We showed them the script and said
what we were looking for, selling our idea no matter the
circumstances. Our budget was symbolic, that’s to say we
didn’t have exactly numbers to determine the wage of each
person who participated in the realization.
After convincing actors, Art department got the locations,
props and settings; in some cases, we created elements to
design the whole atmosphere of the film. For example,
photographers tested the cameras and ensured that colors
of the film were the most proper.
It is not possible filming if we haven’t done these steps.
Those were our four months of preproduction.
Why did you choose Jordan Sube?
John Agudelo: This is a special place in Santander, is the
lowest population town in Colombia, that’s why is virtually
abandoned; many of the houses and streets are now debris,
undergrowth is above the walls, even during the filming we
were witnesses of a cactus growing above the walls. These
