Como Secretaría de Desarrollo Económico estamos muy 

entusiasmados con esta publicación, pues nos permite presentar

Honduras que como país estamos construyendo.

anunció a mediados de julio de 2016 la mejora de la calificación 

de estable a positiva, mientras Moodys, el 24 de mayo de ese 

mismo año anunció la mejora de B3 positivo a B2 positivo. 

El Informe Doing Business, publicado por el Banco Mundial, 

incluye a Honduras entre los países más atractivos para invertir 

en América Latina, así como también remontamos 12 escaños en 

el Índice de Competitividad Global 2015-2016 del Foro 

Económico Mundial. 

Por otro lado, el Fondo Monetario Internacional en la última 

revisión del programa económico reconoció que la mayoría de las 

reformas estructurales están avanzando, y que la administración 

tributaria se está fortaleciendo. 

El mundo reconoce que nuestra nación está cambiando, y por 

ello creemos oportuno el lanzamiento de esta publicación 

Directorio Orquídea Empresarial que contiene esa información 

vital y valiosa para seguir promoviendo negocios en nuestra 

querida Honduras.

This is the Honduras we are building, a country with a solid and 

orderly economy. 

The international rating agency Standard & Poor's (S & P) announced

economic program revision recognized that most of the structural 

reforms are advancing, and that the tax office administration is solid 

and efficient. 

The world recognizes that our nation is changing, and for this reason 

we feel it is an appropriate time to launch this publication Orquidea

to continue promoting business in our beloved Honduras.

EXPLORANDO 

HONDURAS 

Desde la cumbre de Pico Bonito hasta el segundo arrecife coralino más grande del 

mundo en el bello mar esmeralda, Honduras es hoy un destino incomparable. Con un 

número creciente de visitantes de EEUU, Canadá y el resto del mundo, las oportunidades 

de inversión en el sector de viajes y turismo son abundantes. Honduras tiene 

todo lo necesario para impulsar y sostener una robusta industria turística. Mientras los 

inversionistas identifican esas oportunidades, la demanda aumenta aún más. 

Con la Ley de Incentivos al Turismo emitida en el año 2002, se eliminaron los impuestos 

y tarifas sobre las importaciones de equipos y otros materiales e insumos necesarios 

para construir y poner en marcha nuevos proyectos turísticos. Entre los proyectos 

elegibles para estos beneficios se incluyen: la industria del hospedaje y resorts, tour 

operadores, centros recreativos, restaurantes, servicios de transporte y agencias de 

alquiler de vehículos. Los inversionistas que buscan oportunidades de inversión en 

desarrollos turísticos en el destino de mayor crecimiento en Centroamérica no tendrán 

que ir muy lejos.

With the Tourism Incentives Law, approved in 2002, the duties and tariffs related to the

Puerto Cortés, hasta el extremo Oriental de la costa 

Atlántica que limita con los bosques tropicales y 

manglares pantanosos de la zona de la Mosquitia, el

eastern end of the Atlantic coast bordering the tropical 

forests and marshy mangroves of the Mosquitia region, the 

visitor marvels at the colorful and glittering natural 

landscapes.

with fun activities that span from underwater 

activities, swimming, diverse water sports, 

and relaxing under the sun

SNORKEL 

Las Islas de la Bahía: Utila, Roatán y Guanaja, se ubican en 

el extremo sur del Sistema Arrecifal Mesoamericano 

(SAM), segundo mayor del mundo. Son más de 1,000 km 

de formas y colores desde Yucatán hasta Belice, Guatemala 

y Honduras, en donde crecen los dos puntos con más 

corales vivos de todo el sistema. Las Islas de la Bahía son el 

hogar de 65 especies de corales pétreos, 350 de moluscos 

y más de 500 especies de peces. Entre ellos, el pez más 

grande del mundo, el tiburón ballena, puede observarse 

especialmente en Utila. 

Igualmente, aún se pueden apreciar varias especies de 

animales en peligro de extinción, pero protegidos en 

Honduras, como el manatí del caribe, tortugas marinas 

(verde, boba, laúd y carey), la concha reina, el pez sapo 

espléndido, el mero de Nassau y los corales cuerno de alce 

y negro. 

Aficionados al snorkel, amantes del buceo y científicos del 

mundo entero vienen a “Las Islas” para divertirse, explorar 

o investigar la exótica vida submarina del arrecife y descubrir 

sus rincones vírgenes. Los visitantes encontrarán una 

amplia variedad de actividades dentro de una cultura de 

conservación ambiental promovida por el Parque Marino 

de Roatán y el Parque Marino de Cayos Cochinos 

SCUBA DIVING 

AND SNORKELING 

The Bay Islands: Utila, Roatan and Guanaja, are located at 

the southern end of the Mesoamerican Reef System (MRS), 

the second largest in the world. There are more than 1,000 

km of coral shapes and colors from Yucatan to Belize, Guatemala 

and Honduras, where the two points with the most 

living corals of the entire system grow. The Bay Islands are 

home to 65 species of stony corals, 350 species of mollusks 

and more than 500 species of fish. Among them, the largest 

fish in the world, the whale shark, can be observed especially 

in Utila. 

You can also observe several endangered species of animals 

that are protected in Honduras, such as the Caribbean 

manatee, sea turtles (Green, Loggerhead, Leatherback and 

Hawksbill), Queen conch, Splendid toadfish, Nassau grouper, 

and the Elkhorn and Black corals. 

Snorkeling and diving enthusiasts as well as scientists from 

around the world come to "The Islands" to have fun, explore 

or investigate the exotic underwater life of the reef and 

discover its virgin corners. Visitors will find a wide variety of 

activities within a culture of environmental conservation 

promoted by the Roatan Marine Park and the Cayos Cochinos 

Marine Park.

aproximadamente al 29% del territorio nacional. 

Existen 5 grandes ecorregiones que incluyen: bosques 

secos del Pacífico, los bosques de pino, encino y roble, 

bosques nublados, bosques húmedos del Atlántico, y las 

sabanas de Pino Caribe en la Mosquitia. En estas ecorregiones 

existen humedales, manglares, ecosistemas 

marino-costeros y varias islas, islotes y cayos, tanto en el 

Atlántico como en el Pacífico 

NATURALEZA 

Y AVENTURA 

Existe una gran diversidad de flora con presencia de más 

de 60 variedades de ecosistemas vegetales. Diversidad de 

fauna se puede observar, entre las que se destaca la 

Guacamaya o Guara Roja: Ave Nacional de Honduras. Se 

puede disfrutar de variedad de actividades y deportes en 

todo el país, entre ellos: canopy o tirolesa, canotaje y 

otros deportes acuáticos, observación de aves, senderismo, 

escalada de rocas, y baño en aguas termales. 


Honduras has 91 protected areas that correspond to approximately 

29% of the national territory. There are 5 large ecoregions 

that include: Pacific dry forests, oak and pine forests, 

cloud forests, Atlantic rainforests, and savannas of Caribbean 

Pine in the Mosquitia region. In these ecoregions there are 

wetlands, mangroves, marine-coastal ecosystems and several 

islands, islets and keys, both in the Atlantic and in the Pacific. 

NATURE AND 

ADVENTURE 

There is a great diversity of flora, with presence of more than 

60 varieties of plant ecosystems. Diversity of fauna can be 

observed, among which the Red Macaw, the National Bird of 

Honduras, stands out. You can enjoy a variety of activities 

and sports throughout the country, including: canopy, canoeing, 

rafting and other water sports, bird watching, hiking, rock 

climbing, and bathing in hot springs.

ARQUEOLOGÍA 

Honduras es un territorio 

con riqueza arqueológica 

casi en todos 

sus departamentos. 

No obstante, son las regiones de Copán, Intibucá, La Paz, 

Olancho y en el Valle de Sula donde se concentra la mayoría 

de los sitios arqueológicos. Aparte de Copán Ruinas, 

que es reconocido mundialmente, se calculan unos 

140,000 sitios de interés arqueológico en todo el territorio 

nacional. 

Autoridades estiman que el 80% aún no han sido explorados, 

por lo que el país se encuentra aún virgen y con 

enorme potencial de investigación y turismo sostenible. 

Inclusive en la zona de San Pedro Sula existen 3 futuros 

destinos de turismo arqueológico: el Parque Arqueológico 

Currusté, la laguna de Jucutuma y el Jardín Botánico de El 

Ocotillo. Sin embargo, el reciente descubrimiento de 

mayor impacto a nivel mundial es la Ciudad Blanca, en la 

selva de La Mosquitia. 


ARCHEOLOGY 

Honduras is a territory 

with archaeological wealth 

almost in all 

its departments. 

However, the regions of Copán, Intibucá, La Paz, Olancho 

and in the Sula Valley are where most of the archaeological 

sites are concentrated. Apart from Copán Ruins, which is 

recognized worldwide, there are an estimated 140,000 sites 

of archaeological interest throughout the country. 

Authorities estimate that 80% have not yet been explored, so 

the country is still unspoiled and with huge potential for 

research and sustainable tourism. Even in the San Pedro Sula 

area there are 3 future archaeological tourism destinations: 

Currusté Archaeological Park, the Jucutuma lagoon, and El 

Ocotillo Botanical Garden. However, the recent discovery 

with the greatest impact worldwide is the White City, deep in 

the Mosquitia jungle.

Las culturas vivas de Honduras son otro atractivo cultural 

y turístico. Durante la época colonial el país fue enriquecido 

por la mezcla racial entre los colonos y la presencia 

de ocho grupos étnicos de origen indígena y negro que 

aún se localizan a lo largo y ancho del país. 

CULTURAS

Honduran living cultures are another cultural and tourist 

attraction. During colonial times the country was enriched by 

the racial mix between the settlers and the presence of eight 

ethnic groups of indigenous and black origin that are still 

found throughout the country. 

Estas culturas, aún vivas con sus 

costumbres, valores y cultura, son: 

los pech, tawahka, misquitos, 

tolupanes, garífunas, negros creoles, 

chortís y lencas. 

These cultures, still alive with their customs, 

values and culture, are: 

Pech, Tawahka, Misquitos, Tolupanes, 

Garífunas, Black Creoles, Chortís, 

and Lencas. 

Según el último censo, 10% de la población de Honduras 

pertenece a estos grupos étnicos, quienes viven en 

regiones específicas del territorio nacional. De todos 

éstos, solo la etnia lenca ha perdido su lengua natal. 

The latest census shows that 10% of the population of 

Honduras belongs to these ethnic groups, who live in specific 

regions of the national territory. Of all of these, the Lenca 

ethnic group is the only one to have lost its native language.

CIUDADES 

COLONIALES 

Y MODERNAS 

Durante los más de trescientos años que duró el período colonial, la presencia 

española se manifestó en todas las actividades de la vida diaria. Ahora, Honduras es el 

segundo país con mayor patrimonio colonial tangible en toda Centroamérica. 

Gracias, en el departamento de Lempira, fue la primera ciudad colonial del país. 

Debido a los abundantes recursos naturales de la zona, en 1544 fue proclamada 

primera capital de la región centroamericana. Es una ciudad de calles adoquinadas, 

hogar de muchos edificios históricos, iglesias y una fortaleza del siglo XIX llamada el 

Fuerte de San Cristóbal. La estructura fue edificada para la defensa militar de la 

ciudad, y dentro del predio se encuentra la tumba del gobernante hondureño Juan 

Lindo. Muy cerca de Gracias, el visitante puede disfrutar de relajantes aguas termales 

y otras ciudades con extraordinarias iglesias de los siglos 16 y 17 que representan la 

fusión de la cultura lenca con la cultura colonial española. 

Comayagua, la ciudad más colonial de Honduras, está ubicada en medio del productivo 

valle de Comayagua en el centro de Honduras. Durante la colonia fue la capital de 

la Federación centroamericana, de la anexión al Imperio Mexicano y de la república 

independiente hasta 1880. La ciudad ofrece lindas iglesias con valor artístico, sobre 

todo barrocas, retablos destacados e imágenes valiosas. Su catedral, dedicada a la 

Inmaculada Concepción, es la más importante, con una fachada llena de detalles que 

‘se proyectan’ sobre la plaza frente a ella y una torre donde funciona uno de los relojes 

más antiguos de América, fabricado en 1100. También es popular la Iglesia y convento

COLONIAL 

AND MODERN 

CITIES 

During the three hundred years or more of the colonial period, the Spanish presence 

manifested itself in all the activities of daily life. Now, Honduras is the country with the 

second highest tangible colonial heritage in Central America. 

Gracias, in the department of Lempira, was the first colonial city of the country. Due to the 

abundant natural resources of the region, in 1544 it was proclaimed the first capital during 

the colony. It is a city of cobbled streets, home to many historic buildings, churches and a 

19th century fortress called the Fort of San Cristobal. The structure was built for the military 

defense of the city, and one of the highlights found there is the tomb of the Honduran ruler 

Juan Lindo. Just a few kilometers from the Fort and the city of Gracias, the visitor finds 

relaxing hot springs and other smaller cities with extraordinary churches from the 16th and 

17th centuries that represent the fusion of the Lenca culture with the Spanish colonial 

culture. 

Comayagua, the most colonial city in Honduras, is located in the productive Comayagua 

Valley, in central Honduras. It was the capital during the colony, of the Central American 

Federation, during the annexation to the Mexican Empire, and of the independent republic 

until 1880. The city offers beautiful churches, mainly Baroque with artistic value, with 

outstanding altarpieces and valuable images. Its cathedral, dedicated to the Immaculate 

Conception, is the most important, with a detailed façade above the square and a tower that 

holds one of the oldest working clocks in America, made in 1100. The San Francisco church 

and convent, where you can appreciate the oldest bell in America (1460), is popular, as well 

as La Caridad Church, where the remains of the only Indian Church of Honduras are still 

found. In addition to the religious art and pre-Columbian pieces of its museums, during the 

Easter holiday you can see the streets of the historical center of Comayagua 'carpeted' with 

colorful sawdust in beautiful designs as a pathway for the processions.

Entre las ciudades modernas, Tegucigalpa, la capital, y San

siglo XIX, y por su proximidad con Puerto Cortés. Actualmente 

la actividad económica de los parques industriales 

y las fábricas, especialmente textiles, repesenta la 

segunda fuente de ingresos del país. Rodeada de bellas 

montañas y grandes extensiones de caña de azúcar y 

banano, San Pedro Sula es conocida como la ciudad 

industrial de Centroamérica. 


Among modern cities, Tegucigalpa, the capital, and San Pedro 

Sula, the industrial city, are the largest. They are political and 

business centers, but they are also destinations for events, 

conventions, as well as good starting points to discover the 

country. Tegucigalpa, for example, has a mix of colonial, 

neoclassical and modern buildings in an urban landscape that 

is expanding vertically. The energy of the city is also evident in 

the increasingly diverse cultural and artistic options offered 

by its museums, galleries and cultural centers. 

On the other hand, San Pedro Sula is in a geographical 

location that has been destined for trade since colonial times. 

Both businesses and immigrants came to the area because of 

the opportunity that banana companies represented in the 

19th century, as well as for its proximity with Puerto Cortes. 

Today, the economic activity of industrial parks and factories, 

especially textile ones, generate the country's second largest 

source of income. Surrounded by beautiful mountains and 

large extensions of sugar cane and banana plantations, San 

Pedro Sula is known as the industrial hub of Central America.

La gastronomía hondureña es variada, ya que contiene 

elementos y sabores indígenas pre-colombinos, 

españoles, criollos y en alguna medida africanos, como es 

típico en toda la costa atlántica centroamericana.

que es un cultivo autóctono que formó parte 

de la base alimentaria de los pueblos 

pre-hispánicos de Mesoamérica. 

Aunque varía un poco en cada región del país, la comida 

hondureña incluye carnes, especialmente el cerdo y res; 

aves como el pollo y gallina; pescado y diversos mariscos 

dependiendo de la zona; tortillas,frijoles, arroz, productos

GASTRONOMY 

The Honduran gastronomy is varied since it contains 

pre-Columbian, Spanish, Creole and, to some extent, African 

elements and flavors, typical throughout the Central American 

Atlantic coast. 

Traditional Honduran food is heavily 

dominated by maize, 

an indigenous crop that was the basis of the diet 

of the pre-Hispanic people of Mesoamerica. 

Although it varies a little in each region of the country, the 

Honduran diet includes meats, especially pork and beef; 

poultry such as chicken and hen; fish and various seafood 

depending on the area, tortillas, beans, rice, dairy products 

such as fresh cheese and cream, some vegetables, certain 

herbs and tropical fruits. Natural refreshments and coffee, as 

an aromatic hot beverage, is accustomed throughout the 

country to accompany breakfast, a sweet baked treat in the 

afternoon, or dinner.

Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO en 1980, 

Copán es una de las grandes ciudades-estado del período 

clásico de la civilización Maya y se le conoce como el París 

del mundo Maya. El Parque Arqueológico de Copán, en 

Copán Ruinas, es el sitio donde la civilización Maya 

alcanzó su máximo esplendor científico. El Parque Arqueológico 

de Copán alberga la más grande colección de

The Mayan 

World 

Known as the Mayan Route, the Maya World covers 100 

archaeological sites in Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador 

and Honduras. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 

1980, Copan is one of the great city-states of the Classical 

Period of the Mayan civilization and is known as the Paris of 

the Mayan world. The Archaeological Park of Copan, in 

Copan Ruins, is the place where the Mayan civilization 

reached its maximum scientific splendor. The archaeological 

park of Copan houses the largest collection of hieroglyphic 

inscriptions and stone monuments, as well as one of the 

finest pre-Columbian archeology in the world.

La costa Atlántica se extiende en aproximadamente 700 

km de playas de arena blanca y vegetación hermosa con 

gran potencial de desarrollo turístico. Las Islas de la Bahía 

son uno de los principales destinos Premium para el 

buceo en el mundo entero, con fácil acceso a la barrera de 

coral mesoamericana, la segunda más larga del mundo, y 

con una impresionante diversidad de vida marina. 

Roatán es lo mejor del Caribe concentrado en un paraíso 

con su maravilloso arrecife coralino, aguas cristalinas y 

cálidas en tonos azulados, playas blancas y topografía

especialmente por la extensa playa de West Bay, con fina

Guanaja, o Isla de los Pinos por sus bosques de Pinus 

Caribaea, fue descubierta por Cristóbal Colón en 1502. 

Por un lado, la isla representa tranquilidad, belleza marina 

y submarina, e impresionante biodiversidad; y por otro, 

historia, arqueología y exquisito cacao Criollo. Plan 

Grande es un sitio arqueológico poco conocido, y el cacao 

cultivado en la isla es alabado en mercados internacionales 

de chocolate fino. 


Emerald 

Caribbean 

The Atlantic coast extends across approximately 700 km of 

white sandy beaches and beautiful vegetation with great 

potential for tourist development. The Bay Islands are one of 

the top Premium diving destinations in the world, with easy 

access to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second longest 

in the world, and with an impressive diversity of marine life. 

Roatan is the best of the Caribbean, with its wonderful coral 

reef, crystalline and warm waters in bluish tones, white 

beaches and a mountainous topography. Specialized tourism 

magazines have chosen it among the best islands in the world 

for vacations, especially the paradisiacal West Bay beach, 

with fine white sand, turquoise waters and the coral reef just 

a few meters offshore. 

Guanaja, or Pine Island for its Pinus Caribaea forests, was 

discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1502. On one hand, 

the island represents tranquility, marine and submarine 

beauty, and impressive biodiversity; and on the other, history, 

archeology and exquisite Criollo cocoa beans. Plan Grande is 

a little known archaeological site, and the cocoa grown on the 

island is praised in high-end international chocolate markets.

Utila es un paraíso lleno de pequeños cayos, imán para 

buzos y escenario submarino predilecto del arrecife 

coralino más grande de América con abundante vida 

marina. Nombrado por la revista USA Today como el mejor 

sitio para buceo en el Caribe (febrero 2017), los 

buceadores pueden nadar cerca del espectacular pero 

inofensivo tiburón ballena. La isla ofrece al turista ochenta 

sitios para bucear, y celebra el festival anual de música 

electrónica más grande de Honduras. Organizado en 

agosto de cada año, el evento atrae cientos de visitantes 

nacionales e internacionales. 

Cayos Cochinos es un hermoso archipiélago formado por 

13 cayos y pequeñas islas del caribe muy cerca del puerto 

de La Ceiba. Por su enorme riqueza natural, el gobierno de 

Honduras declaró el archipiélago como zona protegida en 

calidad de Monumento Nacional Marino. Hay transporte 

disponible desde Roatán, Utila y desde varias localidades 

cerca de La Ceiba. 

Trujillo es un puerto histórico de la época colonial 

apartado de las rutas turísticas tradicionales. Cuenta con 

una amplia bahía profunda y quizás las playas más bellas 

de la costa norte de Honduras. Un mar tranquilo de aguas 

tibias y cristalinas convierte el entorno en un estanque 

natural. Los planes de construcción de infraestructura 

diversa para la zona convertirán a Trujillo y Puerto Castilla 

en prósperos polos de desarrollo turístico y comercial. 


Utila is a paradise full of small keys, drawing in divers to 

contemplate the underwater scenery of America's largest 

coral reef with amazing marine life. Named the best Caribbean 

diving site by USA Today (February 2017), divers can 

swim near the spectacular yet harmless whale shark. The 

island offer tourists up to 80 diving sites and hosts the largest 

annual electronic music festival in Honduras. Celebrated in 

August each year, the event attracts hundreds of national 

and international visitors. 

Cayos Cochinos is a beautiful archipelago made up of 13 keys 

and small Caribbean islands very close to the port of La 

Ceiba. Given its enormous natural wealth, the government of 

Honduras declared the archipelago a protected area and a 

National Marine Monument. There is transportation to the 

keys from Roatan, Utila and several locations near La Ceiba. 

Trujillo is a historic port from colonial times, away from the 

traditional tourist routes. It has a vast, deep bay and perhaps 

the most beautiful beaches of the north coast of Honduras. A 

calm sea and warm and crystalline waters turn the entire bay 

into a natural pond. The plans to build diverse infrastructure 

for the area will turn Trujillo and Puerto Castilla into a 

prosperous environment for tourism and commercial 

developments.

La Ceiba es la capital del caribe hondureño, novia de 

carnaval, terraza al mar, pista de baile y antesala de ricos 

tesoros naturales. La ciudad nació a finales del siglo XIX 

alrededor de una inmensa ceiba, el árbol sagrado de los 

mayas. Como muchas ciudades caribeñas, La Ceiba creció 

con el comercio del banano, que además la conecta al 

mundo, especialmente con Nueva Orleans (EEUU) y 

algunos puertos europeos. Es conocida por su gente 

hospitalaria y jovial, y está rodeada por mar, arrecife, 

parques naturales, montaña y mangle. Uno de los parques 

es el Refugio de Vida Silvestre Cuero y Salado, hogar del 

manatí del Caribe. 

Muy cerca de La Ceiba está Pico Bonito, el segundo 

parque nacional más grande de Honduras que ofrece 

diversas atracciones. Además de ríos blancos y rápidos 

perfectos para kayak y canotaje, se puede caminar entre 

las nubes en el bosque nublado del parque. Pico Bonito es 

también el hogar de una diversa vida salvaje y ofrece a los 

montañistas y fotógrafos incontables oportunidades para 

apreciar la fauna, que incluye jaguares, tapires, pumas, 

monos caras-blanca y monos araña. 

El Jardín Botánico Lancetilla es el segundo jardín tropical 

más grande del mundo. Tiene la mayor colección de 

plantas exóticas en América Latina, con especies nativas 

de Oceanía, África y Asia, y sirve de hogar o refugio de 

paso a más de 300 especies de aves. La United Fruit 

Company, establecida en Honduras desde inicios del siglo 

XX, creó el jardín en el Valle de Lancetilla en 1925 como 

un centro de investigación, así como de experimentación 

con plantas tropicales con potencial económico. A pocos 

minutos del centro de Tela, Lancetilla es conocido por las 

ojivas naturales en las que se dobla el bambú en su 

entrada. El “Túnel de bambú” es ícono del jardín y de la 

ciudad. 

Punta Izopo, al extremo oriental de la bahía de Tela, 

cuenta con uno de los bosques de manglares más viejos 

del mundo. La mejor manera de descubrirlo es en kayak 

para lograr penetrar por los manglares hacia la laguna 

formada por dos ríos de la zona. Su rico hábitat incluye 

loros, tucanes, monos, caimanes y tortugas. 

Tela es la segunda ciudad más importante del departamento 

de Atlántida, después de La Ceiba, y está ubicada 

casi al centro de la amplia Bahía de Tela, cerca de El 

Progreso y San Pedro Sula. Rodeada de parques, reservas 

naturales y bellas y amplias playas, la pequeña ciudad 

brilla bajo el mismo sol caribeño y contempla múltiples 

aventuras de arena, vegetación y agua. La escapada 

perfecta se hace en lancha hacia el occidente de la bahía 

al Parque Nacional Jeannette Kawas, donde se encuentra 

Punta Sal, un precioso ecosistema de selva tropical y 

manglares. 

En Omoa, a pocos minutos hacia el occidente de Puerto 

Cortés, se encuentra la Fortaleza de San Fernando de 

Omoa, que representa posiblemente la estructura de 

defensa más importante de Centroamérica durante la 

época colonial. Fue proclamado Centro Histórico 

Nacional en 1959, y contiguo al mismo se ubica el museo 

que exhibe material histórico y relevante acerca de la 

fortaleza. Los visitantes pueden apreciar una maqueta de 

la fortaleza, armaduras y armamentos de la época, entre 

otros artefactos. Aun siendo una localidad pequeña, la 

zona de Omoa cuenta con playas y algunos desarrollos 

turísticos que combinan mar, arena y las montañas a 

pocos metros de la costa. 


La Ceiba is the capital of the Honduran Caribbean, carnival 

bride, terrace to the sea, dance floor and home to rich natural 

treasures. The city was born in the late nineteenth century 

around an immense ceiba, the sacred tree of the Maya. Like 

many Caribbean cities, La Ceiba grew with the banana trade, 

an activity that also connects it to the world, especially with 

New Orleans (USA) and some European ports. The city is 

known for its hospitable and friendly people, and it is 

surrounded by sea, reef, natural parks, mountains and 

mangrove. One of these parks is Cuero y Salado Wildlife 

Refuge, home of the Caribbean manatee. 

Very close to La Ceiba is Pico Bonito, the second largest 

national park in Honduras offering various attractions. In 

addition to white water rivers perfect for kayaking and 

rafting, you can walk among the clouds in the park's cloud 

forest. Pico Bonito is also home to a diverse wildlife and offers 

mountaineers and photographers countless opportunities to 

appreciate wildlife, including jaguars, tapirs, pumas, whitefaced 

monkeys and spider monkeys. 

The Lancetilla Botanical Garden is the second largest tropical 

garden in the world. It has the largest collection of exotic 

plants in Latin America, with native species from Oceania, 

Africa and Asia, and serves as a refuge or home to more than 

300 species of birds. The United Fruit Company, established 

in Honduras since the beginning of the 20th century, created 

the garden in the Lancetilla Valley in 1925 as a research 

center, and to experiment with tropical plants with economic 

potential. Located only minutes from downtown Tela, 

Lancetilla is known for the natural arches created by bamboo 

shoots folded at its entrance. This "Bamboo Tunnel" is iconic 

of the garden and the city. 

Punta Izopo, at the eastern end of Tela Bay, has one of the 

oldest mangrove forests in the world. The best way to 

discover it is by kayaking through the mangroves to the 

lagoon formed by two rivers in the area. Its rich habitat 

includes parrots, toucans, monkeys, caimans and turtles. 

Tela is the second most important city in the department of 

Atlántida, after La Ceiba, and it is within the wide Bay of Tela 

near El Progreso and San Pedro Sula. Surrounded by parks, 

natural reserves and beautiful wide beaches, this town shines 

under the same Caribbean sun and hosts multiple sand, 

vegetation and water adventures. The perfect escape is 

experienced by boat toward the west of the bay to the 

Jeannette Kawas National Park, where you find Punta Sal, an 

ecosystem of tropical rainforest and mangroves. 

In Omoa, a few minutes to the west of Puerto Cortes, is the 

Fort of San Fernando de Omoa, possibly representing the 

most important defense structure of Central America during 

the colonial era. It was proclaimed National Historic Center in 

1959, and adjacent to it is the museum that exhibits historical 

and relevant material about the fort. Visitors can appreciate 

a scale model of the fortress, armors and armaments of 

the time, among other artifacts. Although a small town, the 

Omoa area has beaches and some tourist developments that 

combine sea, sand and mountains, just a few meters from the 

coast.

LA MOSQUITIA 

La Mosquitia es una región de manglares pantanosos y nublados 

bosques tropicales en la costa norte de Honduras y 

Nicaragua. Allí se asientan los grupos indígenas más diversos 

de Centroamérica. Las etnias misquita y tawahka llaman a 

esta región su hogar, y muchos estudiosos la consideran el 

bosque lluvioso tropical más extenso de América, después del 

Amazonas. La zona también está poblada por las etnias 

garífunas y pech, que igualmente habitan otras regiones del 

país. Rápidos ríos de aguas blancas, expediciones por la selva 

de exuberante vegetación, impresionantes cascadas y gran 

variedad de fauna silvestre, son sólo algunas de las maravillas 

que esperan a los visitantes en esta remota región. 

Dentro de la región se encuentran 5 áreas 

protegidas por las leyes de Honduras: 

el Parque Nacional Patuca; 

el Refugio de Vida Silvestre Cruta Caratasca; 

la Reserva Biológica de Rus Rus, que incluye la Sierra de 

Warunta y sus cavernas de piedra caliza; 

la Reserva Antropológica Tawahka 

y la Biósfera del Río Plátano. 

Esta última fue declarada Patrimonio de la 

Humanidad por la UNESCO en 1982. 

THE MOSQUITIA 

REGION 

The Mosquitia is a region of swampy and cloudy tropical 

forests on the northern coast of Honduras and Nicaragua. 

There are settlements of the most diverse indigenous groups 

of Central America. The Miskito and Tawahka ethnic groups 

call this region their home, and many scholars consider it to be 

the most extensive tropical rainforest in America, after the 

Amazon. The area is also populated by the Garífuna and Pech 

ethnic groups, which also inhabit other regions of the country. 

Rapid white water rivers, exuberant jungle expeditions, 

stunning waterfalls and a wide variety of wildlife are just some 

of the wonders awaiting visitors in this remote region. 

Within the region there are 5 areas protected 

by the laws of Honduras: 

the Patuca National Park; 

the Caratasca Cruta Wildlife Refuge; 

the Rus Rus Biological Reserve, which includes the 

Sierra de Warunta and its limestone caves; 

the Tawahka Anthropological Reserve 

and the Río Platano Biosphere. 

The latter was declared a World Heritage 

Site by UNESCO in 1982.

Ciudad Blanca 

En medio de exuberante selva de la Mosquitia, una 

expedición de científicos hondureños y extranjeros, 

acompañados por National Geographic y apoyados por el 

gobierno de Honduras, regresaron con noticias dramáticas 

del descubrimiento de la ciudad perdida de una misteriosa 

cultura antigua. El equipo viajó a una región remota 

y deshabitada, el supuesto sitio de la legendaria “Ciudad 

Blanca”, a la que también se le hace referencia como la 

“Ciudad del Dios Mono”. 

Fue en febrero de 2015 que el equipo de arqueólogos y 

antropólogos examinaron y descubrieron plazas amplias, 

montículos y una pirámide de tierra que pertenece a una 

cultura que floreció hace mil años, así como una notable

The White City 

Amidst the lush jungle of the Mosquitia region, an expedition 

of Honduran and foreign scientists, accompanied by National 

Geographic and supported by the government of Honduras, 

returned with dramatic news of the discovery of the lost city 

of a mysterious ancient culture. The team traveled to a 

remote and uninhabited area, the supposed site of the 

legendary "White City", which is also referred to as the "City 

of the Monkey God". 

It was in February 2015 that the team of archaeologists and 

anthropologists examined and discovered wide plazas, 

mounds, and a pyramid of land belonging to a culture that 

flourished a thousand years ago, as well as a remarkable 

number of stone sculptures that had remained intact since 

the city was abandoned. The site www.ciudadblanca.hn

El Lago de Yojoa es el depósito de agua dulce más grande 

de Honduras y una fuente inagotable de paisajes 

naturales. La zona en los alrededores del lago ofrece 

actividades turísticas de diferentes tipos. Se destacan: el 

Zoológico Joya Grande, las Ruinas del Castillo Bográn, 

Honduyate Marina, las Cuevas de Taulabé, Cuevas "El 

Jute", Cataratas de Pulhapanzak, la Central Hidroeléctrica 

Francisco Morazán ("El Cajón"), Mina El Mochito y el 

Parque Eco Arqueológico Los Naranjos, que guarda importantes 

vestigios de las antiguas culturas Proto-Lencas y

El lago de Yojoa se encuentra rodeado por grandes 

montañas que alcanzan alturas de más de 2,600 m sobre

Yojoa Lake is the largest freshwater reservoir in Honduras and 

an endless source of natural landscapes. The area around the 

lake offers tourist activities of different types. Highlights 

include: Joya Grande Zoo, Bográn Castle Ruins, Honduyate 

Marina, Taulabé Caves, El Jute Caves, Pulhapanzak Falls, 

Francisco Morazán Hydroelectric Power Plant (El Cajón), the 

Mochito Mine and the Eco-Archaeological Park Los Naranjos 

that keeps important vestiges of the old Proto-Lencas and 

Olmeca cultures. 

Lake Yojoa is surrounded by great mountains that reach 

heights of more than 2,600 m above sea level. Some of these 

mountains are listed as national parks. The Cerro Azul Meambar 

National Park (PANACAM) on the east side of the lake 

and the Santa Barbara Mountain National Park 

(PANAMOSAB) on the west side, are destinations for camping 

and trekking.

Colosuca reúne a la mancomunidad de los municipios 

lencas y de tradición colonial del departamento de 

Lempira: La Campa, San Manuel de Colohete, San 

Sebastián, San Marcos de Caiquín, Gracias y Belén. En 

estos municipios se palpa la fusión cultural y religiosa de 

los pueblos lencas que tenían cacicazgos durante la época 

colonial en algunos sitios como Colohete y Caiquín. Entre 

las tradiciones aún vivas está la artesanía, comidas y 

costumbres. Al visitar los pequeños pueblos entre 

montañas escarpadas y bosques, el visitante siente que el 

tiempo se ha paralizado, especialmente al contrastar las 

vistas panorámicas contra las preciosas iglesias coloniales, 

que conservan su estilo barroco, con pinturas y adornos 

de mucho valor artístico y religioso de la época colonial. 

El Parque Nacional Montaña de Celaque, muy cerca de la 

ciudad de Gracias, es uno de los parques nacionales más 

impresionantes de Honduras. Su pico más alto alcanza los 

2,849 m sobre el nivel del mar, convirtiéndola en la 

montaña más alta del país. Está cubierta por un frondoso 

bosque y gran diversidad de flora y fauna. 

Colosuca brings together the commonwealth of Lenca 

municipalities and colonial tradition of the department of 

Lempira: La Campa, San Manuel de Colohete, San Sebastian, 

San Marcos de Caiquín, Gracias and Belen. In these municipalities, 

you can see the cultural and religious fusion of the 

Lenca people, who had indian chiefs in some places, such as 

Colohete and Caiquín, during the colonial period. Among the

forests, they feel that time has stopped, especially when 

contrasting the panoramic views against the beautiful 

colonial churches, which maintain their baroque style, with

The Celaque Mountain National Park, near the city of 

Gracias, is one of the most impressive national parks in 

Honduras. Its highest peak reaches 2,849 m above sea level, 

making it the highest mountain in the country. It is covered by 

a lush forest and a great diversity of flora and fauna.

Quince (15) departamentos del país forman parte de la 

“Ruta Turística del Café”. Abarca seis regiones cafetaleras 

del país llamadas: Copán, Opalaca, Montecillos, Comayagua, 

Agalta y El Paraíso. Actualmente la ruta puede 

realizarse por fincas en los departamentos de Comayagua, 

La Paz, Intibucá y Copán, pero en breve podrán recorrerse 

las 6 regiones completas donde funcionan unas 40 cooperativas 

cafetaleras. Los empresarios han levantado 

infraestructuras con características especiales en sus 

sectores para atender, acomodar y hospedar a los turistas 

de la mejor manera posible. 

Honduras produce café en más de 224 comunidades 

dispersas por todo el país y sus cosechas se exportan 

hacia Europa, Asia, y Norteamérica. El país ha sido 

acreedor de diversos premios y distinciones a nivel 

internacional, y se ha posicionado también como fuerte 

exportador de café orgánico. 

Fifteen (15) departments of the country are part of the 

"Coffee Tourist Route". It covers six coffee regions of the 

country called: Copan, Opalaca, Montecillos, Comayagua, 

Agalta and El Paraiso. Currently one can visit farms in the 

departments of Comayagua, La Paz, Intibucá and Copan, but 

soon will be able to tour the 6 complete regions where some 

40 coffee cooperatives operate. Local entrepreneurs have 

built infrastructures with special characteristics in their 

sectors to welcome, accommodate and host the tourists, in 

the best way possible. 

Honduras produces coffee in more than 224 communities 

scattered across the country and their production is exported 

to Europe, Asia, and North America. The country has been 

awarded several prizes and distinctions internationally and 

has also positioned itself as a strong exporter of organic 

coffee.

The Sun Route 

Honduras sale al Pacífico por una breve costa y numerosas 

islas e islotes dispersos en el Golfo de Fonseca. “El 

Sur” es una zona de altas temperaturas y mucho sol que se 

puede recorrer con varios intereses en mente. Si se quiere 

ver arquitectura colonial, la ruta por las iglesias de Pespire, 

Langue, Nacaome y Choluteca es ideal. Si se buscan 

sabores diferentes, una ruta semejante lleva al turista 

entre rosquillas, tustacas y quesadillas (elaboraciones 

horneadas a base de harina de maíz), quesos frescos y 

sopas. 

En San Lorenzo se saborea una variedad de mariscos 

como curiles y cascos, cangrejos, camarones y la sabrosa 

sopa marinera. Si el interés es más la naturaleza, alrededor 

de San Lorenzo se encuentran bellos parajes con 

manglares nutridos de aves, sobre todo en el ocaso. La 

puesta del sol es un espectáculo aparte, ya sea en tierra 

firme o desde Amapala en la Isla del Tigre, que fue, antes 

de Henecán en San Lorenzo, el puerto hondureño más 

importante del Pacífico. 

Honduras reaches the Pacific Ocean on a short coastline and 

by numerous islands and islets scattered in the Gulf of 

Fonseca. "The South" is an area of high temperatures and lots 

of sun that can be travelled with various interests in mind. If 

you want to see colonial architecture, the route through the 

churches of Pespire, Langue, Nacaome and Choluteca is 

ideal. If you are looking for different flavors, a similar route 

takes the tourist to taste rosquillas, tustacas and quesadillas 

(all baked goods based on corn flower), fresh cheeses and 

soups. 

In San Lorenzo you will taste a variety of seafood such as 

curiles and shellfish, crabs, shrimp and the tasty seafood 

chowder. If the interest is more about nature, around San 

Lorenzo you find beautiful places with mangroves full of birds, 

especially during sundown. The sunset is a unique spectacle, 

either on the mainland or from Amapala on Tiger Island, 

which was, before Henecán in San Lorenzo, the most important 

Honduran port in the Pacific. 


Ruta Lenca 

The Lenca Route 

Esta ruta se enmarca en torno al eje turístico entre las 

ruinas mayas de Copán (al occidente) y la ciudad colonial 

de Comayagua (al centro), pasando por las ciudades de 

Copán Ruinas y Santa Rosa de Copán, en Copán; la ciudad 

de Gracias, Lempira; La Paz, en La Paz; y las ciudades 

gemelas: Intibucá y La Esperanza en el departamento de 

Intibucá. 

Entre calles empedradas, talleres de alfarería o textiles 

coloridos, el turista se acerca a algunas tradiciones 

culturales de la etnia lenca al recorrer la ruta. Entre los 

atractivos está: probar su cocina, especialmente montucas, 

atoles y otros platillos basados en maíz y acompañados 

con delicioso café; descubrir sus artesanías desde el 

telar, por ejemplo, en la aldea El Cacao; o escoger entre la 

variedad de frutas, verduras y artesanías disponibles en el 

mercado central de La Esperanza. Existen festivales y 

ferias como el Festival de la Papa, en enero; la Feria 

Artesanal de la Ruta Lenca, en febrero; el Festival Turístico

This route is framed around the tourist circuit between the 

Mayan ruins of Copan (west) and the colonial city of Comayagua 

(central), passing through the cities of Copan Ruins and 

Santa Rosa de Copan, in Copan; the city of Gracias, Lempira; 

La Paz, in La Paz; and the twin cities: Intibucá and La Esperanza 

in the department of Intibucá. 

Between cobbled streets, pottery workshops or colorful 

textiles, the tourist experiences some cultural traditions of 

the Lenca ethnic group as they travel the route. Among the 

attractions are: tasting their cooking, especially montucas, 

atoles and other dishes based on corn and accompanied with 

delicious coffee; discovering their handicrafts from the loom, 

for example, in the village El Cacao; or choosing from the 

variety of fruits, vegetables and handicrafts available at the 

central market of La Esperanza. There are festivals and fairs 

such as the Potato Festival in January; the Handicraft Fair of 

the Lenca Route, in February; the Blackberry Tourist Festival, 

in June; as well as the Gastronomic Festival of Choro (a wild 

mushroom of the area's forests) also in June.

Ruta del Cacao 

La Ruta de Cacao es una oportunidad para disfrutar el 

cacao aromático y de gran calidad. Los orígenes del 

cultivo del cacao son de la época pre colombina, pues los 

aztecas y los mayas ya tomaban bebidas a base de cacao y 

lo utilizaban de moneda. En el trayecto por la zona norte 

del país con clima del trópico-húmedo se visualiza el gran 

potencial que se tiene para producir el cacao Trinitario, o 

“cacao fino”. 

Cerca de La Ceiba, Tela, El Progreso, la zona de la Mosquitia

The Cocoa Route 

The Cocoa Route is an opportunity to enjoy aromatic cocoa 

of great quality. The origins of the cultivation of the cocoa 

bean date back to pre-Columbian times. The Aztecs and the 

Mayas already enjoyed drinks based on cocoa and the beans 

were used as currency. On route across the northern part of 

the country with a humid tropical climate, the visitor visualizes 

the great potential to produce cacao Trinitario or "fine 

cocoa". 

Close to La Ceiba, Tela, El Progreso, the Mosquitia region and 

in the departments of Cortes and Santa Barbara, you can visit 

eco-tourist farms or parks where you learn about agricultural 

and forest biodiversity, diverse ecosystems, soil protection, 

forest conservation, and the coexistence of the cocoa tree 

with existing forests.

When you arrive in Honduras by air, you land at one of the international airports: Tegucigalpa, 

San Pedro Sula, La Ceiba or Roatan. If the trip is by land you can choose between the 

border crossings of El Corinto, Agua Caliente and El Florido from Guatemala; El Amatillo or 

El Poy from El Salvador; and Guasaule, La Fraternidad or Las Manos from Nicaragua. When 

arriving by cruise, you will dock in Roatan, Trujillo or Puerto Cortes. 

Citizens (including business people) from the following FTAA countries do not require a 

visitor's visa to arrive in transit or enter Honduras as tourists:

EN HONDURAS 

El país facilita la obtención de residencias, especialmente 

para personas de negocio o personas que perciben algún 

tipo de ingreso del exterior. Existen varios tipos de 

residencias: para retirados; inversionistas; rentistas que 

reciben ingresos del exterior; para trabajar temporalmente; 

y por matrimonio, vínculo familiar o unión de 

hecho. 

El proceso se inicia en el Consulado de Honduras más 

próximo en el exterior, con la aplicación al tipo de residencia 

deseada, y finaliza con un abogado y notario en 

Honduras. Aun cuando el proceso de obtención de la 

residencia puede tardar varios meses, el futuro residente 

puede entrar y vivir en el país por medio de una visa 

temporal emitida por la Embajada de Honduras en el país 

de origen o la autoridad migratoria hondureña. 

Para obtener el carné de residencia, el solicitante presenta 

su pasaporte, reporte policial, certificado de salud, 

fotografías y otros documentos adicionales. Las Embajadas 

de Honduras en el exterior orientan sobre todo el 

proceso. Dicho carné debe renovarse periódicamente. 

El residente inversionista o trabajador solicita su respectivo 

permiso de trabajo ante la Secretaría de Trabajo 

presentando los documentos requeridos. 

La Ley de Pensionados y Rentistas emitida en 1991 

describe los tipos de residencia más solicitadas en las 

zonas turísticas del país, mayormente en la zona norte. 

Roatán es popular, especialmente para quienes reciben 

ingresos del exterior regularmente, ya sea por su estatus 

de pensionado o retirado en su país de origen, o porque 

reciben ingresos mensuales provenientes de inversiones o 

rentas en el extranjero. 


RESIDING AND RETIRING 

IN HONDURAS 

The country facilitates the issuance of residences, especially 

for business people or people who receive some type of 

income from abroad. There are several types of residences: 

for pensioners/retirees; investors; rentiers who receive 

income from abroad; to work temporarily; and by marriage, 

family bond or de facto union. 

The process begins at the nearest Honduran Consulate 

abroad, with the application to the desired type of residence, 

and it ends with a lawyer and notary in Honduras. Even if the 

process of obtaining residence can take several months, the 

future resident can enter and live in the country through a 

temporary visa issued by the Embassy of Honduras in the 

country of origin or the Honduran immigration authority. 

To obtain the residence card, the applicant presents his 

passport, criminal record, health certificate, photographs and 

other additional documents. Honduran embassies provide 

general guidance as to the whole process. The residence card 

must be renewed periodically. 

The resident investor or worker requests their respective work 

permit before the Secretary of Labor presenting the required 

documents. 

The Law of Pensioners and Rentiers issued in 1991 describes 

the most requested types of residence in the tourist areas of 

the country, mostly in the northern part of the country. 

Roatan is a favorite, especially for those who receive income 

from abroad regularly, whether it is due to their status as 

pensioner or retiree in their country of origin or to their 

monthly income from investments or securities abroad.

Honduras cuenta con todos los elementos necesarios para convertirse en el próximo

turística. La Ley de Incentivos al Turismo emitida en 2002 ha impulsado el crecimiento 

y diversificación de la industria a la fecha. Actualmente, el gobierno de la República 

revisa la legislación actual y trabaja en una nueva ley que fomentará la inversión 

turística a gran escala. La propuesta pronto entrará a discusión en el Congreso 

Nacional. 

Los incentivos que brinda la ley actual son los siguientes: 

• Exoneración por una sola vez, hasta completar su equipamiento, del pago de 

impuestos y demás tributos que cause la importación de bienes y equipos nuevos 

necesarios para la construcción e inicio de operaciones de los proyectos. 

• Exoneración del pago de impuestos y demás tributos que cause la importación de 

todo material impreso para promoción o publicidad de los proyectos o del país 

como destino turístico, por un período de diez (10) años improrrogables. 

• Exoneración del pago de impuestos y demás tributos para la reposición por 

deterioro de los bienes y equipos, durante un período de diez (10) años, previa 

comprobación. El otorgamiento de estos incentivos está sujeto, entre otros 

requisitos, al otorgamiento de licencia ambiental por la Secretaría de Recursos 

Naturales y Ambiente. 

La Ley de Incentivos al Turismo vigente dispone que los beneficios se otorguen a 

quienes realicen las siguientes actividades: 

• Alojamiento 

• Alimentos y bebidas 

• Transporte aéreo, acuático y terrestre 

• Centros de recreación 

• Arte y artesanías 

• Agencias de turismo receptivo 

• Proyectos culturales y espectáculos 

• Congresos y convenciones

Honduras has all the necessary elements to become the next tourist destination of choice, 

and everything to boost and sustain a robust tourism industry. The Tourism Incentives Law, 

issued in 2002, has boosted the growth and diversification of the industry. Presently, the 

Honduran government is reviewing the current legislation and is working on a new law that 

will encourage large-scale tourism investment. The proposal will soon be discussed by the 

National Congress. 

The incentives that the current law provides are the following: 

• Exoneration, for one time only, of the payment of taxes and tariffs applied to the 

import of new goods and equipment necessary for the construction and start-up of 

projects. 

• Exoneration of the payment of taxes and tariffs applied to the import of all printed 

material for promotion or publicity of the projects or of the country as a tourist 

destination, for a 

period of ten (10) years (non-extendable). 

• Exemption of the payment of taxes and other tariffs for the replacement of goods and 

equipment, due to deterioration, during a period of ten (10) years, prior verification. 

The granting of these incentives is subject to, among other requirements, the granting 

of an environmental license by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. 

The Tourism Incentives Law provides benefits to those 

who develop the following activities:

Honduras, y algunos han continuado invirtiendo en otras

latinoamericanos como Decameron, con presencia en 

diversos países de América y el Caribe, han visitado el país 

para explorar las oportunidades a corto y mediano plazo. 

Grandes inversionistas nacionales también han apostado a 

las oportunidades del sector turismo de Honduras. Indura 

Beach and Golf Resort, en la Bahía de Tela, es un reciente 

ejemplo de un desarrollo turístico y de bienes y raíces con 

campo de golf Gary Player de 18 hoyos. El complejo 

turístico continúa en expansión y buscando nuevos 

inversionistas para las diversas etapas planificadas. 

Cadenas de tiendas de conveniencia, restaurantes de 

comida rápida, cafetines, heladerías y otras franquicias 

nacionales e internacionales también se están multiplicando 

en todo el territorio, diversificando la oferta de 

productos y servicios de todo tipo. 

Día a día surgen también nuevos pequeños y microempresarios 

que atienden a los turistas nacionales y extranjeros. 

Desde bares, restaurantes especializados, panaderías 

artesanales, chocolaterías y comedores típicos, hasta 

hoteles en las montañas, cafetines en ciudades coloniales 

o nuevos servicios de transporte o guías turísticas, 

emprendedores hondureños están ofreciendo cada día 

nuevas y mejores experiencias a los visitantes. Nuevas 

ofertas de servicios turísticos se inauguran continuamente 

en ciudades grandes, pueblos pequeños y lugares 

pintorescos. 

Actualmente, Honduras cuenta con más de 8,000 prestadores 

de servicios turísticos, y entre ellos, más de 5,000 

son establecimientos de alimentos y bebidas. Enter ellos 

se encuentran las principales arrendadoras de vehículos, 

centros recreativos y tour operadores, así como los 

centros de buceo que otorgan certificaciones reconocidas 

a nivel mundial. Asimismo, una moderna flota de transporte 

interurbano conecta los principales destinos turísticos 

del país y de la región, operando con estándares 

internacionales.

Marriott, Hilton, Intercontinental, Clarion, Holiday Inn, Trust 

Hotels and Resorts, and Crowne Plaza are some of the 

international hotel chains operating in Honduras, and some 

have continued to invest in other major cities in the country. 

On the other hand, Latin American groups like Decameron, 

with presence in several countries of America and the Caribbean, 

have visited the country to explore the opportunities in 

the short and medium term. 

Major national investors have also taken advantage of the 

opportunities in the tourism sector in Honduras. Indura 

Beach and Golf Resort in Tela Bay is a recent example of a 

real estate and tourism development, with a Gary Player 

18-hole golf course. The resort continues to expand and 

seeks new investors for the various stages planned. 

Chains of convenience stores, fast food restaurants, cafés, ice 

cream parlors and other national and international 

franchises are also multiplying throughout the territory, 

diversifying all kinds of products and services offered. 

New small companies and micro-entrepreneurs thrive day to 

day servicing the domestic and foreign tourists. From bars, 

specialty restaurants, artisan bakeries, chocolate shops and 

local dining spots, to hotels in the mountains, coffee shops in 

colonial cities or new transportation services or tourist 

guides, Honduran entrepreneurs are offering new and better 

experiences to visitors every day. New services are continually 

being inaugurated in large cities, small towns and picturesque 

tourist attractions. 

Currently, Honduras has more than 8,000 tourism service 

providers, and among them, more than 5,000 are food and 

beverage establishments. Included among these are car 

rental companies, recreational centers and tour operators, as 

well as diving centers that grant worldwide recognized certifications. 

Additionally, modern intercity transport fleets 

connect the main tourist destinations of the country and the 

Central American region.

Los hoteles son la columna vertebral del sector turismo. Actualmente Honduras cuenta 

con una oferta de más de 1,000 hoteles y hospedajes, ofreciendo más de 23,000 

habitaciones en todo el país. El 50% de esta oferta se distribuye entre: Tegucigalpa, San 

Pedro Sula, La Ceiba, Roatán, Copán Ruinas, Tela, Utila y Comayagua. 

Entidades especializadas en la industria del turismo tanto del gobierno como del sector 

privado cuentan con perfiles de proyectos o pueden guiar a los interesados sobre las 

oportunidades específicas alrededor del país basados en la Estrategia Nacional de 

Turismo Sostenible. 

La Política de Estado del Sector Turismo favorece la inversión 

extranjera y contempla los siguientes aspectos importantes: 

• estrategia de desarrollo del sector turismo al año 2021; 

• incentivos fiscales a nivel sectorial, y un marco legal adecuado; 

• destino auténtico con diversidad de oferta, congruente con las nuevas 

tendencias de viaje del mercado internacional (cultura, turismo de aventura 

y geoturismo); 

• Islas de la Bahía, el destino más consolidado, designado como Zona Libre Turística, 

ofrece una serie de incentivos fiscales únicos en la región; 

• creciente interés de los organismos internacionales en apoyar el sector turismo 

como herramienta de desarrollo y crecimiento económico; 

• cartera diversificada de proyectos de inversión de desarrolladores privados e 

instituciones financieras nacionales en busca de coinversión; 

• estructura de base para promover la descentralización de la gestión turística 

a nivel municipal en las regiones de mayor potencial turístico. 

Diversidad de proyectos están actualmente en ejecución, y otros en priorización y 

planificación para los próximos 3-4 años, tomando en cuenta diversas modalidades de 

inversión. Para el año 2020, se visualiza a Honduras como líder en Centroamérica y del 

Caribe en el turismo de sol y playa. Se pretende contar con una oferta exclusiva de 

infraestructura y servicios de clase mundial. El actual desarrollo del Corredor Logístico, 

por ejemplo, mejora la conectividad entre destinos turísticos. El Corredor Turístico 

entre San Pedro Sula y La Ceiba estará listo en marzo del 2018 y contempla 220 km de 

caminos nuevos y ampliados. Se proyectan inversiones significativas en terminales 

aéreas para Trujillo y Utila; construcción de 3 hoteles escuela: en Roatán, Tela y Santa 

Rosa de Copán; proyectos de turismo comunitario; señalización de calles, aldeas y 

barrios en Islas de la Bahía; proyectos de recuperación urbana de ciudades; nuevos 

centros culturales; un hospital certificado para cruceros; parques de diversos tipos y 

ciclo vías, entre otras obras por todo el país.

Hotels are the backbone of the tourism sector. The country currently offers more than 

1,000 hotels and lodgings, with more than 23,000 rooms throughout the country. 50% 

of this offer is distributed in the following cities: Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula, La Ceiba, 

Roatan, Copan Ruins, Tela, Utila and Comayagua. 

Specialized entities in the tourism industry of both the government and the private 

sector have project profiles or can guide stakeholders on the specific opportunities 

around the country based on the National Strategy for Sustainable Tourism. 

The State Policy of the Tourism Sector favors foreign investment 

and contemplates the following important aspects: 

• Development strategy of the tourism sector through the year 2021. 

• Fiscal incentives at the sector level and an adequate legal framework. 

• Authentic destination offering diversity, congruent with the new international 

trends of the world travel market (culture, adventure tourism and geo tourism). 

• Bay Islands, the most consolidated destination, designated as Free Tourist Zone 

offering a series of unique fiscal incentives in the region. 

• Growing interest of international organizations to support the tourism sector as a 

tool for development and economic growth; 

• Diversified portfolio of investment projects of private developers and national 

financial institutions seeking joint ventures. 

• Basic structure to promote the decentralization of tourism management at the 

municipal level in the regions with the most potential. 

Various projects are currently under execution, and others being prioritized and 

planned for the next 3-4 years, considering diverse investment modalities. The vision 

for 2020 is that Honduras becomes the leader of the sun and beach tourism sector in 

Central America and the Caribbean. The goal is to offer an exclusive offer of infrastructure 

and world-class services. The current development of the Logistics Corridor, for 

example, improves the connectivity between tourist destinations. The Tourist Corridor 

between San Pedro Sula and La Ceiba will be ready in March of 2018, and contemplates 

220 km of new and expanded roads. Significant investments are projected in air 

terminals for Trujillo and Utila; construction of 3 hotel schools: in Roatan, Tela and 

Santa Rosa de Copan; community tourism projects; signaling of streets, villages and 

neighborhoods in The Bay Islands; projects of urban recovery of various cities; new 

cultural centers; a hospital certified for cruises; parks of various types and cycle tracks, 

among others all over the country.

El turismo es uno de los motores de la economía hondureña y se sustenta en cuatro 

pilares que son: transporte (terrestre, aéreo y marítimo); alojamiento (pensiones, 

hoteles, etc.); alimentos y bebidas (restaurantes, bares, cafetines, ventas de comida, 

etc.); y los centros de recreación (centros de buceo, parques acuáticos, canopy o 

tiralaso, etc.). La oferta de formación en turismo, tanto formal como informal, se ha 

desarrollado en los últimos cinco años precisamente enfocándose en capacitar 

personal para fortalecer esos pilares. 

La oferta de centros de enseñanza en turismo es amplia en las ciudades grandes e inicia 

a partir de la educación media ya que forma parte del sistema educativo de Honduras 

desde el 2012. Escuelas públicas y privadas ofrecen Bachilleratos Técnicos Profesionales 

que incluyen hotelería y turismo. Los jóvenes egresan listos para incorporarse al 

sector laboral o pueden continuar sus estudios superiores en la misma área de 

estudios. En el nivel de educación superior, las universidades públicas y privadas 

ofrecen una variedad de licenciaturas y certificaciones técnicas en áreas como: Técnico 

en Bebidas y Alimentos, Certificado en Experiencia Culinaria, Administración de 

Empresas Turísticas, Licenciatura en Gastronomía o Turismo en general. 

A nivel de Educación no formal se cuenta con el Instituto Nacional de Formación Profesional 

(INFOP) en Tegucigalpa y su hotel escuela en el Centro de Técnica Avanzada en 

San Pedro Sula donde ofrecen cursos en competencias turísticas como técnicas de 

camarera, cursos de cocina, repostería y pastelería, cursos de hostelería, entre otros. 

Igualmente está el Hotel Escuela Madrid, en Tegucigalpa, que ofrece capacitaciones y 

asistencias técnicas en áreas de cocina, regiduría de pisos, recepción y restaurante. 

Por otro lado, existen programas especiales desarrollados por las cámaras de turismo y 

asociaciones de hoteles que participan en programas de capacitación para fortalecer 

capacidades en las pequeñas y medianas empresas turísticas. 

De igual manera, diversos programas de cooperación internacional han establecido 

alianzas estratégicas con entidades nacionales para apoyar procesos de formación 

profesional. Tal es el caso de la Cooperación Suiza con el INFOP para crear Talleres 

Populares por todo el país con el fin de capacitar jóvenes en comunidades dispersas. 

Entre las áreas de estudio se encuentran la panadería y hostelería.

Tourism is one of the engines of Honduran economy and is based on four pillars: transportation 

(land, air and sea); lodging (pensions, hotels, etc.); food and beverages (restaurants, bars, 

coffee houses, food stands, etc.); and recreation centers (diving centers, water parks, canopy, 

etc.). The offer of training coursed in Tourism, both formal and informal, over the last five 

years, has developed precisely by focusing on training staff to strengthen these pillars. 

There is a wide offer of educational centers in tourism in large cities and it starts from middle 

school, as part of the Honduran education system since 2012. Public and private schools 

offer Technical Bachelor's degrees that include the hotel and tourism sector. Young people 

graduate ready to join the labor pool or can continue their studies in the same sector. At the 

higher education level, public and private universities offer a variety of degrees and technical 

certifications such as: Food and Beverage Technician, Culinary Experience Certificate, 

Tourism Business Administration, Bachelor in Gastronomy or Tourism in general. 

At the informal education level, there is the National Institute for Professional Training 

(INFOP) in Tegucigalpa and its hotel school at the Advanced Technical Center in San Pedro 

Sula where courses are offered in tourism related skills such as waitressing techniques, 

various types of cooking, baking and pastry, hospitality courses, among others. There is also 

the Hotel Escuela Madrid in Tegucigalpa, that offers training and technical assistance in 

areas like kitchen, floor management, reception and restaurant. 

On the other hand, there are special programs developed by chambers of tourism and hotel 

associations that participate in training programs to strengthen capacities in small and 

medium-sized tourism companies. 

Similarly, various international cooperation programs have established strategic alliances 

with national entities to support professional training processes. Such is the case of the 

Swiss Cooperation with INFOP to create Popular Workshops throughout the country to train 

young people in dispersed communities. Baking and general hospitality are among the topics 

studied.
