2017 co-organizando
el evento OFF THE
pasando y proporcionar actualizaciones y
Here we go 2017! Conexión Media Group
begins 2017 by co-organizing the OFF THE
WALL: Mosaics of the Explorers, an art and
Florida history event. We have partnered with
Florida architect and author, Deborah Desilets,
and Erika Rojas of Samantha’s Gift Event
Planning for it and we are working hard for it
to be a successful event. Please refer to the
article about it by Deborah and also the ad in
this edition of Conexión.
The organizing, sponsoring and support of
cultural activities throughout the area is one
great reason we exist and we will also be
helping as much as possible with the ongoing
Old Spanish Trail (OST) Celebrations
taking place throughout the area. Last
December, one of their special events took
place in Pensacola and the next big one is
scheduled for May in Tallahassee. We thank
Charlotte Kahl and some of the other leaders
of those wonderful activities for keeping us
informed on what is going on and providing
updates and pictures. I have learned a lot
about the Old Spanish Trail and the history of
Florida in the last year!
We’ve been getting calls from many persons
that want to become collaborators of
Conexión and we hope to soon be able to
fotos.
Hemos estado recibiendo llamadas
de muchas personas que quieren ser
colaboradores de Conexión y esperamos
poder publicar pronto algunos artículos de
ellos. Nuestra lista actual de colaboradores es
bastante impresionante e incluye a personas
de una gran variedad de especialidades y /
o intereses que continúan proporcionando
contenido interesante a nuestra publicación.
necesitamos!
¡Para todos nuestros lectores, un 2017 feliz y
próspero!
publish some articles from them. Our current
list of collaborators is quite impressive and
includes individuals from a large variety of
specialties and/or interests who continue to
provide interesting content to our publication.
We hope the readers out there are enjoying
the articles all our contributors are providing.
This year will be an interesting in our nation
as we go through the changes in political
leadership at all levels. The main thing I pray
in this matter is that both Republicans and
Democrats, start thinking more about what is
good for America as opposed to what is good
for them or their party. I hope the promoters
of divisiveness in our nation will be confronted
by those who understand that a divided
society is not what we need!
To all our readers, a happy and prosperous
Uniendo la comunidad… por los niños
Por Alexander Rea
El 17 de diciembre de 2016 la United for
a Good Cause Inc. organizó la Annual
Emerald Coast Christmas Miracle
Children’s Fiesta. Numerosas personas
bondadosas y sin ánimos de lucro,
junto con el patrocinador, comercios
y organizaciones se unieron para
patrocinar este evento único con sabor
latino.
entretenimiento, coros religiosos,
organizaciones como AmeriCorps, Toys
for Tots, Home Depot, Helen Back, K2
Media, Studio Fuzion, Miss Costa Latina
y muchas otras entidades contribuyeron
para la diversión de más de 1,800 niñas
y niños que junto con sus familias
estuvieron presentes.
Los niños con necesidades especiales
fueron los primeros en participar de
todas las actividades y sus orgullosos
padres gozaron al ver a sus hijos
NUESTRA COMUNIDAD
OUR COMMUNITY
contentos y divirtiéndose.
Todo en el evento fue gratis: comida,
atracciones, premios ya que la gente
maravillosa contribuyó voluntariamente.
Hubo shows de talentos inmensamente
brillantes como el de los jóvenes que
parecían desafiar los límites físicos de los
humanos. Hubo competencias de baile
con bicicletas como premios. Desde
cualquier punto de vista, los shows
fueron totalmente impresionantes.
En todo el salón del Centro de
Convenciones hubo una abundancia
de atracciones en todas las direcciones:
desde payasos, juegos, magos, pintura
de caras, animales hechos de globos,
comidas, mascotas, fotografías, hasta
Santa Claus y mucho, mucho más.
Fue como un milagro ver tantos niños
iluminados con puro gozo y felicidad.
Fue tan magnífico que el corazón podría
cantar bellezas al presenciar la magia
que esta ocasión logró crear. ¡Muchas
gracias a todos los que participaron en
este evento!
The Car of Blue
By Jamie Venezia
Spanish is so much fun to learn. Honestly,
the time I spent learning Spanish was one
of the most fun times in the world. It is
very different, and somehow, the same.
I remember walking into the classroom.
It looked like kindergarten. Every letter
corresponded with colors and pictures.
No one knew what anything meant, but
we were all excited to try. We sat down at
desks with our names printed clearly on
the front (Mine did not say Jaime, thank
goodness!) and we waited for someone
to explain what everything meant. We just
waited.
Learning the alphabet was fun; we
learned to sing the alphabet song in
Spanish, which while it was not difficult,
was still a blast. When we got to sentence
structure, however, everyone was puzzled.
The adjective example threw everyone
off. El Carro de Azul. The Blue Car. Literally,
in English this says The Car of Blue, which
just sounds magical. It sounds like Lord
of the Rings and I have to travel from
Mordor with The Car of Blue. Since I am a
romantic type, I instantly fell in love with
this new way of saying things. I always
felt so magical and majestic; always trying
to hit that perfect Spanish accent when
I pronounced words. It was harder for
some kids to learn this new way of talking,
however. It did not sound ‘right to them’.
My friend, bless her heart, struggled with
Spanish syntax and always wrote down
el azul carro. Of course, in the English
language, we write our adjectives in front
of the word they are describing, so it
always sounds right to us.
Let me explain why English is the worst.
Why would we put the adjective in front
of the word it is describing? It seems like
messed up priorities. When you walk
down the street, and your sister runs into
the road to get a ball rolling astray, do
you ever go “Look out for that blue thing!
And also it is a car!” No! Of course not! The
more important thing is the car. The noun
is the subject of the sentence, and yet we
put the word describing the word we are
truly talking about, first. Why? In Spanish it
is very direct. I feel like it would be easier
-albeit mildly- to call my sister in from the
road. El carro de azul. It sounds so pretty.
The car of blue. English has us say things
backwards and put less emphasis on
things we really care about or mean. It is
backwards and upside down.
I thought of it like that for the longest
time. I am a writer at heart, and I always
will be. Learning Spanish impacted my
style of writing. When we had to translate
things, they stopped being the blue car
and forever became the car of blue. Then, I
noticed some other aspects of my writing
changed. The tall girl now became the
girl that is tall; the loud music became the
music that is loud. I even started writing
my dates as “the fourth of October of
2016”. Everything started sounding really
romantic and magical. I tried to figure out
what was going on.
The nouns started coming first for me.
It seemed very important. All the ducks
in a row. It was not loud music, it was
music that happened to be loud. The
most important part is the music, and we
cannot lose that part of ourselves.
My dates started to appear from least
to greatest measurement of time; days,
months, years. In a way, it helped me keep
organized. Do the specific things first,
then get general. This was also a concept
that eluded most of my classmates. I just
thought of them like fractions; the first
number on top went into the number on
the bottom, not vice versa. Therefore the
days that make the months that make
the year goes first. It was all a matter
of priorities and what was important. If
someone asked for the date, you would
not just say 2016. That is very vague and
gives no real sense of when it is. First you
give the day, and if specifics are needed,
the month then the year. Spanish made
sense. Everything just came in the order of
importance.
In a pretty symbolistic way, Spanish
helped me get through my freshman year
of high school. It helped me prioritize
what is important first, and then it helped
me with the general romance of everyday
life. Spanish was one of the most fun
things that I have ever done, because
it just made sense where English made
up arbitrary rules to follow. Spanish is
much more than a language, it is a whole
different way of looking at the world.
Celestial Connection
IGLESIAS CON SERVICIOS EN ESPAÑOL:
Examen Espiritual Anual
presionen nuestro llamado a amar a Dios
equivocado. Ella tenía un problema con
sus pulmones, pero sólo la trataban por
diabetes. Puesto que los síntomas eran casi
iguales para ambas condiciones, apenas
asumieron que ella tenía solamente una
enfermedad a ocuparse. Después de un
tiempo se dieron cuenta de que tenía
cáncer también; Pero era demasiado
tarde para tratarlo. Usted puede estar
preguntando ¿cómo se puede hacer
un diagnóstico espiritual? Muchos de
nosotros tratamos de llamar al pecado
como un error. Además, nuestro estándar
de rectitud viene generalmente de
nuestra cultura. Los dos medios que Dios
usa para ayudarnos a diagnosticar nuestra
enfermedad espiritual son:
• Palabra de Dios: La Palabra de Dios es
el espejo que revela nuestra debilidad
y pecado (Santiago 1: 22-25). Nuestro
estándar no es la cultura sino Cristo.
Debemos imitar a Cristo no la cultura.
Podemos mirar la Biblia de dos maneras:
podemos “mirar” al espejo o “mirar” dentro
de ella. Echar un vistazo a la Palabra de
Dios no cambiará nuestra vida.
pecado. Si está casado, su cónyuge y sus
hijos pueden exponer su pecado; Si eres
soltero, tus padres, hermanos y amigos
enfermedad espiritual tenemos. Algunas
de las enfermedades espirituales peligrosas
incluyen mentiras, auto justificación, ira,
chismes, lujuria, egoísmo, manipulación,
adicción. Es difícil admitir que alguien
nos diga que somos auto justificados. La
tendencia inicial es contra-reaccionar y
demostrar que no lo somos. Pero como
hijos de Dios necesitamos estar dispuestos
a aceptar y tratar nuestra enfermedad
espiritual.
chequeo espiritual, diagnosticar y tratar
con las enfermedades espirituales. Dios
padres y madres.
celular
Yo no entiendo por qué de repente
www.conexionflorida.com
¡Arrancando el año con las
manos llenas!
todos saben lo que el niño necesita
como si lo hubieran parido:”ese bebé
esta flaquito necesita tomar más leche”,
“lo tienes muy desabrigado se va a
enfermar”, “lo tienes muy tapado se va
a ahogar”.
esas pataletas”.
Yo quiero darles un consejo de madre
a madre, por más experiencia que
ustedes tengan o crean tener, no den
inesperadas.
Yo últimamente opté por la sinceridad y
cuando alguien me aturde con consejos
y recomendaciones no solicitadas le
digo con todo respeto ” a mis hijos
los educo yo, linda Del gracias”. Esa
sinceridad deja algunos confundidos, a
hacer? Madres, a revelarnos. Yo creo que
los consejos constructivos se reciben
con mucho amor y agradecimiento,
pero las críticas y las imposiciones
son molestas para todos y más para
las madres, por eso no tengo ningún
problema en recordar cuando sea
necesario “a mis hijos los educo yo,
gracias”
Felíz New Year
By Bohemian Babushka
HolaHolaHola Beautifuls, and FELIZ
NEW YEAR!!! They say that musica is
the universal language, and Babushka
definitivamente agrees with that. So,
time to share the history of one of the
most beloved and shared songs of
all time- Auld Lang Syne. For the full
rendition go to Scotland.org for a lovely
share.
“In 1788 the Robert Burns sent the
poem ‘Auld Lang Syne’ to the Scots
Musical Museum, indicating that it was
an ancient song but that he’d been the
first to record it on paper. The phrase
‘auld lang syne’ roughly translates as ‘for
old times’ sake’, and the song is all about
preserving old friendships and looking
back over the events of the year.
It is sung all over the world, evoking
a sense of belonging and fellowship,
tinged with nostalgia.
It has long been a much-loved Scottish
tradition to sing the song just before
midnight. Everyone stands in a circle
holding hands, then at the beginning of
the final verse (‘And there’s a hand my
trusty friend…’) they cross their arms
across their bodies so that their left
hand is holding the hand of the person
on their right, and their right hand
holds that of the person on their left.
When the song ends, everyone rushes
to the middle, still holding hands, and
probably giggling.
Auld Lang Syne:
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne.
Chorus:
For auld lang syne, my jo,
For auld lang syne,
We’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
For auld lang syne,
And surely ye’ll be your pint-stowp!
And surely I’ll be mine!
And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.
The rest gets very “Scotsy”, which BB
adores, so if you’d like to read more click
on the link and sing with your drink.
For our part, Sweetie and Babushka
cantamos the canción and lift our drinks
to all our friends, familia, and of course
those that are la combinación of the
two. To you Beautifuls
GATEWAY FOR THE ARTS:
Mosaics of the Explorers
By Deborah Desilets
In collaboration with Conexión Media Group and Samantha’s
Gift Event Planning, I invite you to join us at an event where art,
architecture and a passion for history combine in the form of the
Anton Refregier Tallahassee (ART!) mosaics. As the last architectural
associate of Morris Lapidus, I was called when the Mosaics were
discovered, as they represent the last of 26 great artists artworks from
the 1957 Americana Hotel, a hotel designed for the Tisch family by
Morris Lapidus.
Our art awareness movement looks to the Anton Refregier Tallahassee
(ART!) mosaics in the hope that by superb example they will lead the
way in support of fine art and history. We hope that the Explorers
will one day grace our newly defined BLUEPRINT of “urban green-ways”
to communicate a diverse story of place and may be used to mark
a movement of people in Cascades, Smokey Hollow, Gaines Street
and Franklin Boulevard, FAMU Way, Cascades Crossing, Collegetown,
Biketown who are exploring past as prologue. We hope the Explorers
will become a Gateway for the Arts in the Capital City.
Theater with a Mission te invita
cordialmente a una histórica boda
indígena-española en la Misión San Luis
el domingo 12 de febrero del 2017, a las
A love letter from your great-great-grandparents
By Ben Gunter
When do all the generations in a family
gather to celebrate the ties that bind?
When do new families form, stepping
gallantly into the gap between what’s
been and what’s about to be? When
does the rich tapestry of our past join
hands with the bright threads in our
future? At a wedding!
Theater with a Mission cordially invites
you to a Historic Indian/Spanish Wedding
at Mission San Luis, on Sunday, February
12, 2017, at 1:45 p.m. The only wedding
of its kind in all the world, this heritage
event transports you back 10 generations
to Spanish La Florida, in the war-torn
year 1703. Spanish missions are under
attack by English-speaking Europeans
to the north and non-Christian Natives
to the west. So the Spanish soldiers and
the Christian Indians who live at Mission
San Luis are fighting back – by getting
married.
This dramatic reconstruction of real life
in Spanish Florida lets you join in the
processions that bring bride and groom
to the Church door, participate in the
responses (including the Pater Noster)
that make them man and wife during
the Latin mass, then party hearty as
the whole Mission throws a Fiesta for
the new couple, complete with historic
songs, dances, and a wedding-reception
play. You’ll become part of the family, as
a cast of two dozen actors, all exquisitely
costumed in authentic period clothing,
brings you face to face with Florida’s
intercultural life from 300 years ago.
New year brings
lower energy prices
Beginning January 1, Gulf Power
customers will see their prices drop
3 percent thanks to lower fuel costs
used in energy production.
In November, the Florida Public
Service Commission approved
Gulf Power’s request to decrease
customer’s bills by $4.63, from
$148.64 to $144.01 for the average
residential customer. This is the
second year in a row Gulf Power
customers have seen a decrease
in energy prices brought about by
careful planning and management
of the natural gas and cleaner-thanever
coal the energy provider uses
to generate electricity. Last January,
residential energy bills decreased 5
percent.
“Gulf Power employees have worked
hard to manage costs to benefit our
customers directly, especially as we
head into the cold winter months,”
said Rick DelaHaya, Gulf Power
spokesperson. “And because Gulf
Power employees have been working
hard toward a more balanced
energy mix, our customers can take
advantage of lower fuel prices now,
and into the future.”
Every year, the Florida Public Service
Commission adjusts Gulf Power’s
prices to reflect cost changes in fuel,
environmental controls and energy
conservation programs. Fuel cost
savings are passed through directly
to Gulf Power customers, with no
profit to the company.
This decrease comes on the heels
of a price increase request to
continue to invest in the reliability
of Northwest Florida’s energy
infrastructure. In October, Gulf Power
requested that the Florida Public
Service Commission conduct a
public review of their prices and a
proposed increase that would begin
in July 2017. The last time customers
saw a price increase was in January
2015, and when compared to those
prices, the average residential
customer’s monthly bill in July 2017
after PSC approval would increase
Every part of this experience has been
diligently researched, then vividly
revived for you to enjoy. The songs
you’ll hear come from the 1600s, and the
toast you’ll drink comes right out of Don
Quixote. The Fiesta play is a special gem
– a delicious 30-minute satire that follows
a tiny troupe of actors into a big town
where there’s just been a big society
wedding. The actors sell the bride’s
family a performance that “only people
whose parents were married by a priest
will be able to see.” It’s called El retablo de
las maravillas, Where Only the Pure See
Miracles, and it’s by Miguel de Cervantes,
the creator of Don Quixote. Theater with
a Mission’s unique translation lets you
meet vibrant characters from Florida’s
Spanish past, and hear their ideas about
marriage in their own words, translated
into crystal-clear English that’s peppered
with extracts from the original Spanish.
It’s all free with standard admission
to Mission San Luis – $5 for adults, $3
for seniors, $2 for children, and $0 for
active duty military. Sunday, February
maternidad y neo-natales, salud mental
y abuso de sustancias, medicamentos
recetados, servicios y aparatos para
rehabilitación, laboratorio, de bienestar y
preventivos y control de las enfermedades
crónicas, pediatría, incluyendo el cuidado de
visión y oral.
Los planes también deben incluir los
siguientes beneficios: De control de la
natalidad, de amamantar.
Los beneficios de salud esenciales son
requisitos mínimos para todos los planes del
Mercado.
Es preciso que conozcas una pequeña
sugerencia que debes tener en cuenta antes
de tomar:
- A mayor deducible y co-seguro… Menor
cuota mensual
- A menor deducible y co-seguro …Mayor
cuota mensual
compañías no.
Florida.
objectives are to us what fuel is to our
cars… They propel us forward.
• Sense of direction. Yes, direction is to
us what the GPS is to our car. It guides us
with focus to our destination.
• It helps our decision making. It allows
us to stay focused, keep the main thing
the main thing and especially helps us to
say no when necessary.
• Incredible sense of accomplishment
when resolutions are kept.
• Significant improvement in our
quality of life when resolutions are
successful because we grew our human
achievements and possibilities.
• Sense of Control over our life. We
often hear that people who have no set
objectives are condemned to work all
their lives for those who do.
Con’s:
• Sense of Stress (Pressure on our
shoulders) to accomplish what we set
out to do.
• Live in the Doing of our Resolution
and forget about being, enjoying the
present moment and the people that are
important to us. A certain dependence
to accomplishments.
• Sense of Guilt when we do not attain
our Resolutions.
• Feelings of Incompetency and failure
when not completing our Resolutions.
• Decrease in our personal self-esteem
when not realizing our Resolutions.
As human beings, we are on this planet
to grow and live our lives to their full
potential. Despite the con’s, many of
us strive to create a better world for
ourselves, our families and colleagues.
That’s why we go for it and take on the
New Year’s resolutions.
Here are a few tips to help you fulfill your
set resolutions, grow in quantum leaps
and celebrate in 2018 the life results you
achieved in 2017.
Tips:
• Write them down.
“Since I was a little child, I have made all
kinds of lists including short term tasks,
long term goals and resolutions. It’s how
I make sense of the world, bring order
to my ideas, start turning them into
ACTION. If you don’t write them down,
your ideas will get lost”. - Sir Richard
Branson
Write Why?
A short paragraph of why you absolutely
desire to accomplish each of your
resolutions. Your why will make you
persevere when you feel like giving up.
“People don’t buy what you do they buy
why you do it”. -Simon Sinek
One powerful Word + pictures
For example: If one of your resolutions is
to exercise 4 times a week, 30 minutes
each time your powerful word can be
Health and find images that represent
this word for you. A multitude of studies
show that our mind thinks in pictures.
This simple step connects the intellect
with the emotional to propel success
levels exponentially.
In your Face, many times a day
Display your powerful words and
pictures where you can see them many
times daily.
Example mirror in your bathroom,
digital screen saver, or a vision board. It
is important that you remind yourself
consciously and subconsciously of your
comience a surtir efecto.
salud.
Hay muchos corredores de seguros que
le pueden dar más información y en
mucho más profundidad.
About Health
Insurance
By Marcos Otero
Happy NEW YEAR! I hope the future
is filled with love, joy, prosperity,
most importantly Health. During the
last several years we have seen the
cost of medicine rise greatly. It is so
heartbreaking when I see a patient who
has no insurance. Let’s talk about health
insurance.
Many choose not to buy insurance
because of cost but do you realize the
cost if you are sick.
According to HealthCare.gov: Not
having insurance “can sometimes lead
people without coverage into deep
debt or even into bankruptcy. It’s easy
to underestimate how much medical
care can cost: Fixing a broken leg can
cost up to $7,500. The average cost of a
3-day hospital stay is around $30,000.”
That is one stay with a simple problem.
What happens to something that
requires several days of hospitalization
and surgeries? I had a patient show me
a bill of almost one half million dollars.
1. It reduces what you must pay out of
pocket after you have paid the yearly
deductible. Each plan has different
deductibles. The deductible is that
amount which you must pay before
the insurance begins to pay the agreed
upon percentage. This means that even
though you pay premiums every month
– you must meet a certain limit before
the insurance starts to take effect. This
is like the deductible on car insurance.
Except that in health insurance the
deductibles are cumulative.
2. Out of pocket maximum. This is the
total amount you must pay no matter
how much covered care you
receive during the year.
Remember that the plan covers one
year. That means that every new
year the deductible amount starts all
over and you must again meet the
deductible required.
Like car insurance there are different
levels of health insurance. The
lower your premium the higher the
deductible. The lower the copay the
higher the premium. The more services
covered the higher the premium.
Therefore, plan per your budget and
health.
The question is can you afford to be
without insurance?
There are many insurance brokers that
can give you more info and in much
more depth.
Having insurance protects you from the
high medical cost in two ways.
March of Dimes ofrece 9 resoluciones de año
nuevo sobre el embarazo saludable para las
futuras madres
WHITE PLAINS, Nueva York, 30 de
diciembre de 2016 /PRNewswire-
HISPANIC PR WIRE/ -- Si usted es una
mujer que está embarazada o que
planea tener un bebé en un futuro
cercano, tome una resolución de año
nuevo de permanecer lo más saludable
posible, dice la March of Dimes
Foundation. El primer paso es comenzar
a tomar un multivitamínico diario que
contiene la vitamina B ácido fólico,
incluso si no está tratando de quedar
embarazada.
“Su salud antes y después del embarazo
tiene un impacto directo en su bebé”,
dijo la Dra. Siobhan Dolan, asesora
médica de March of Dimes y coautora
lucro Healthy Mom, Healthy Baby: The
Ultimate Pregnancy Guide.
Otras
resoluciones de March of Dimes para las
futuras madres:
Esté al día con sus vacunas. Hable con
su proveedor de atención médica sobre
www.conexionflorida.com
las vacunas que debería recibir antes
y durante el embarazo, incluyendo la
vacuna contra la gripe y el refuerzo
Tdap.
No coma carne cruda o poca cocida,
huevos crudos o líquidos, jugos o
productos lácteos sin pasteurizar
(crudos), coles crudos – o productos
Evite roedores salvajes o roedores
March of Dimes Offers 9 New Year’s
Resolutions on Healthy Pregnancy for Momsto-Be
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Dec. 30, 2016 /
PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ -- If
you’re a woman who’s pregnant or
planning a baby this season, make a
New Year’s resolution to be as healthy
as you can, says the March of Dimes
Foundation. The first step is to start
taking a daily multivitamin containing
the B vitamin folic acid, even if you’re
not trying to get pregnant.
“Your health before and during
pregnancy has a direct impact on your
baby,” says Dr. Siobhan Dolan, a medical
advisor to the March of Dimes and coauthor
of the non-profit’s book Healthy
Mom, Healthy Baby: The Ultimate
Pregnancy Guide. “The good news is
that there are many things you can do
as a mom-to-be that can protect your
own health and help you have a healthy
baby.”
Dr. Dolan says it’s also a good idea to
eat foods that contain folate, the natural
form of folic acid, including lentils,
green leafy vegetables, black beans, and
orange juice. In addition, some foods
are fortified with folic acid, including
enriched grain products such as bread,
cereal, and pasta; and corn masa
products such as tortilla chips and tacos.
Besides taking a daily multivitamin
containing folic acid to prevent serious
birth defects of the brain and spine,
women can take other steps to avoid
infections that can hurt them and their
babies during pregnancy. Foodborne
illnesses, viruses, and parasites can cause
birth defects and lifelong disabilities,
such as hearing loss or learning
problems. Other resolutions from the
March of Dimes for moms-to-be:
• Be up-to-date with your vaccinations
(shots). Talk to your healthcare provider
about vaccinations you should receive
before or during pregnancy, including
your flu shot and Tdap booster.
• Don’t eat raw or undercooked meat,
raw or runny eggs, unpasteurized (raw)
juice or dairy products, raw sprouts -- or
products made with them.
• Handle foods safely. Be sure to wash
all knives, utensils, cutting boards, and
dishes used to prepare raw meat, fish or
poultry before they come into contact
with other foods.
• Maintain good hygiene. Wash your
Servicio, Caridad, Unidad
Service, Giving, Unity
Uniting the Community…for the Children
By Alexander Rea
On December 17, 2016, United for
a Good Cause Inc. hosted the 12th
Annual Emerald Coast Christmas Miracle
Children’s Fiesta. Numerous selfless
and kind people, along with sponsor
and participating businesses and
organizations, came together to host
this one of a kind event with a twist of
Latin flavor.
Christmas spirit and cheer was in
the hearts of all kinds of people
and organizations from all over the
Emerald Coast, who were present
in making a day to remember for so
many children in need. Food services,
entertainment groups, church choirs,
organizations such as AmeriCorps,
Toys for Tots, The Home Depot, Helen
Back, K2 Media, Studio Fuzion, Miss
Costa Latina, and numerous other
entities were present in creating fun for
over 1,800 children and families that
attended.
Children with special needs were given
first run of all the activities, with many
proud parents’ eyes shimmering with
glee to see their children filled with joy.
Everything at the event was free; food,
attractions, prizes, all free of charge and
all committed voluntarily from such
marvelous people.
Featured were shows of audacious and
immensely brilliant talents, such as
young dancers that seemingly defied
human physical limits. Dance contests
for prizes including bicycles were also
held. From any perspective, the live
shows that were hosted were absolutely
impressive.
Throughout the massive room of the
Emerald Coast Convention Center, an
abundance of entertainment was in
every direction, from balloon animals,
clowns, games, magicians, face painting,
food, photo booths, mascots, even
Santa Claus himself and much, much
more.
To see so many children light up
with pure happiness and enjoy life
so prominently was a miracle in itself.
‘Twas so magnificent, the heart would
sing with beauty upon witnessing the
magic that this occasion had created.
Thank you to all who participated in this
marvelous event!
4th Annual Santa’s 4 County Sleigh Run
By Alexander Rea
Members of United for a Good
Cause embarked upon an intercounty
Christmas sleigh run convoy on
Christmas Eve.
We traveled back and forth through
multiple cities of Northwest Florida and
the Emerald Coast, delivering toys to less
fortunate families who weren’t able to
attend the Christmas Miracle Children’s
Fiesta. Families with their children
showed up at each designated point.
They selected toys and gifts from the
great variety made available for this
occasion. It was quite marvelous seeing
selfless people come together to spread
Christmas cheer to the less fortunate.
Many of the participants were those
who volunteered at the Emerald Coast
Christmas Miracle Children’s Fiesta, still
with an indivisible amount of warm
heartedness that begs to spread joy.
Many thanks to Sabór A México of Fort
Walton Beach and Helen Back Again of
Crestview, La Chalupita of Santa Rosa
Beach, and La Rumba of Defuniak Springs
who served as designated stopping
points for the sleigh run.
A Port in the Storm:
Being Homeless
in the Panhandle
By Judy Byrne Riley
Where do you go if you have been
evicted because your Landlord didn’t
pass on your rental payment to their
Mortgagor, or if you are living in your
car with your little children because
you are a single mother and you lost
your job, or your family has a tent in
the woods where you are all living
because you are sick, cannot work
and have no savings left? There are
very few options for the women and
families in our area who are homeless.
The one safe place, however, is
OPPORTUNITY PLACE, a temporary
shelter for women and families who
are homeless. Opened in 2008,
OPPORTUNITY PLACE has given a
safe, secure home to so many of
those who need that helping hand.
Located at 305 Lovejoy Road in Fort
Walton, the shelter is always full
and always has a waiting list. Over
the years, the shelter has helped
hundreds of people: single women
of all ages and families with children
from age eighteen to newborn, some
born while their mother was living at
the shelter. Most of the children at
OPPORTUNITY PLACE are under the
age of four. On any given day 25-
36 individuals have found refuge at
OPPORTUNITY PLACE and more than
60% are children.
It is not just a roof over their heads
that our residents receive. Our
goal is self-sufficiency and there
are many parts to reach that goal.
When a woman or family arrives at
our door they often have nothing
- no food, clothes, transportation
or basic care items. In addition to
providing a roof over their heads
and a secure environment, our staff
and volunteers connect them to
community resources; they receive
assistance enrolling in SNAP (food
stamps), health care, school and/
or childcare for the minors. Local
churches, organizations and
generous individuals provide a
warm meal every evening of the
year, either homemade or donating
$77. Our residents receive help with
developing and implementing a plan
of action that will result in improved
financial security, jobs and permanent
affordable housing and much more.
When OPPORTUNITY PLACE opened
in July of 2008, it was a part of
the “Okaloosa Walton Homeless
Continuum of Care/Opportunity,
Inc.” That organization is currently
known as Homelessness and Housing
¿Cuál es tu palabra
para 2017?
Por Peggy Brockman, Entrenadora de Negocios,
Autora & Presentadora
¿Es así como se ve tu vida? ¿Eres de las
personas que apilan todo encima de las
mesas de la oficina? ¿Tienes el doble de
la ropa que necesitas o vistes? ¿Cuándo
fue la última vez que limpiaste tus
gabinetes… tu calendario… tu email…
tu VIDA???
palabras… llenamos nuestras mentes
vendrá a tu mente. Y esto te ayudará en
el proceso de tomar decisiones.
Como entrenadora de negocios,
enseño a simplificar y enfocar. Para el
año 2017 he escogido SIMPLIFICAR.
PASADO.
Pienso
organizar un grupo con los que quieren
cumplir con SU PALABRA de este año.
¡Será divertido! ¡Hazlo! Sólo envíame
tu correo a peggy@peggybrockman.
com. ¡LES DESEO UN PRÓSPERO 2017!
What’s Your Word For 2017?
By Peggy Brockman, Business Coach, Author & Speaker
Is this what your life looks like? Are
you someone who has piles in your
office, sitting around on your tables?
Do you have twice as many clothes as
you need or wear? When was the last
time you cleaned out your cabinets….
your calendar….your email…your
LIFE???
It is a new year and it signifies change
for many. It is when we set a long
list of goals and things we want to
accomplish. In other words…we
clutter up our minds with so many
things we plan to accomplish, we just
get overwhelmed and don’t focus on
anything.
My mentor and leadership guru, John
C. Maxwell, taught me to choose one
word to focus on each year. If you
take time to really think about it, THE
word will come to you. When you do
that, it helps in your decision-making
process.
As a business coach, I teach people
to simplify and focus. This year I
have chosen DECLUTTER for my 2017
word. With that word in focus, every
time I start to do something I will ask
myself if it is in alignment with my
focus for the year. By decluttering
and simplifying everything, I will
create room for things that are
important to me. I will be happier in
my surroundings, be more productive
by not wasting so much time looking
for things, I will feel accomplished
by knowing I did it. By making
better choices and decluttering my
schedule, I will achieve my financial
goals in my business and create the
time needed to do the things I want
to do like completing my next book.
WHAT WILL YOUR WORD BE FOR
2017? Sit with it a while today and
CHOOSE. Each and every day is a new
beginning. If we have screwed up in
the past – IT IS THE PAST. WE CAN’T
CHANGE IT! What we CAN change
is the future. Choosing one word to
center your life around for an entire
year is a great way of doing that. Step
up to the challenge. Send me an email
and let me know what your word is for
the year. I really want to know. I am
planning an accountability group for
those who want to stay true to THEIR
WORD for the year. It will be fun!
Join us!! Just send me that email to
peggy@peggybrockman.com. HAVE
A PROSPEROUS 2017.
¿Tienes Que Renovar Tu ITIN?
As of January 1, 2017 prior issued ITIN’s
a letter is not received, but one’s middle
number is one of the above, the ITIN
must be renewed.
Annual Spiritual Checkup
By Pastor Sagar Sukka / www.misioncasa.org
Each year many of us undergo a physical checkup,
perhaps a financial checkup at end of the fiscal year, or
maybe even a performance review at work. But how often
do we take time to review our spiritual life?
The Bible says in II Peter 3:18 that those saved by grace are
called to grow in grace (2 Pet. 3:18). As disciples of Jesus
Christ, we are to live a life of love: love for God and love for
our neighbor, in the power of the Holy Spirit. Too often,
in the busyness of life, we let other priorities crowd out
our call to love God and our neighbor (Matthew 22:37-
40). Therefore, we must periodically undertake a spiritual
checkup in order to align ourselves with Jesus’ command.
The steps involved in our spiritual checkup is similar to a
physical checkup: first, we need to “diagnose” the problem,
and then “deal” with the issue.
Diagnose: It has been more than a year since one of my
best friend’s mom passed away because of the wrong
diagnosis. She had a problem with her lungs, but they
were only treating her for diabetes. Since the symptoms
were almost same for both the conditions, they just
assumed that she had only one illness to deal with. After
a while they came to realize that she had cancer as well;
but it was too late to treat it. You might be asking how
can one do a spiritual diagnosis? Many of us try to call
sin as a mistake. Moreover, our standard of righteousness
generally comes from our culture. We often say, “It’s OK” &
“It’s not a big Deal”. The two means that God uses to help
us diagnose our spiritual malady are:
Word of God: The Word of God is the mirror that reveals
our weakness and Sin (James 1:22-25). Our standard is
not culture but Christ. We ought to imitate Christ not the
culture. We can look at the Bible in one of two ways: we
can “glance” at the mirror or “gaze” into it. Glancing at God’s
Word will not change our life. As I mentioned above, it is
safe to say that the doctors who treated my friend’s mom
only glanced at the problem; if only had they gazed at her
situation, she would have lived a little longer.
Words of Godly Men/Women: God uses people to reveal
our sin. If you are married your spouse and your kids can
expose your sin; if you are single your parents, siblings
and friends can help you see your sin. If you are a church
member, your pastor and the spiritual leadership of the
church can help you diagnose your spiritual problem.
Though I admit that there is a danger in only believing
other people’s diagnosis; it is worth taking seriously, if a
good number of people say the same thing about your
problem.
Deal: From our diagnosis, we know what kind of spiritual
illness we have. Some of the dangerous spiritual maladies
include lies, self-righteousness, anger, gossip, lust,
selfishness, manipulation, addiction. It’s hard to admit
when someone says to us that we are self-righteous. The
initial tendency is to counter-react and prove that we
are not. But as children of God we need to be willing to
accept and deal with our spiritual sickness. The only way
to deal with it is to rely on the power of the Holy Spirit
to transform our life in to the image of Christ. Even as
we enter into a new year, let us resolve to do a spiritual
checkup, seeking to diagnose and deal with our spiritual
maladies as God is willing to heal you.
January 9-15: Latino Week of Action Offering Free
Affordable Care Act Enrollment Help
2016 - Community Support
Makes a Difference
By Samantha Barrett, Development Director, Panhandle Warrior Partnership
Pensacola, Fla. — During the week of January 9-15, the Epilepsy Foundation
of Florida (EFOF), a leading provider of free Health Insurance Marketplace
enrollment assistance, will focus on Latino community outreach in North Florida
with a Latino Week of Action.
Open Enrollment is ongoing through January 31 under the Affordable Care Act.
Anyone seeking help with learning about health plans, determining eligibility for
subsidies, and enrolling in health coverage before the deadline can receive free
assistance by contacting one of EFOF’s Navigators, state-licensed and federallycertified
enrollment experts.
EFOF has been an assistance provider in every Affordable Care Act enrollment
period, and specializes in outreach to minority communities and those for whom
English is a second language. Enrollment assistance is funded by federal grants
from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Greetings Veterans and supporters of
Veterans’ causes! I hope that everyone had a
very Merry Christmas and that 2017 ushers
in a sense of purpose and hope for each
and every one of you! As we welcome 2017
here at Panhandle Warrior Partnership, we
take time to reflect in appreciation for all
those that have helped us accomplish our
mission to support veterans of Florida’s 1st
Congressional District. From our advocates
and interns, to our volunteers and donors,
every bit has counted and we’ve made
substantive impact on the lives of many
veterans in need in our community.
I’d like to give a special “thank you” to those
who helped make our Holiday Food Drive a
resounding success. Our food came from a
number of resources-the employees of BAE
Systems in Mary Esther, Florida, Mana Food
Bank, Ever’man Grocery, Heroes on the
Water, and Combat Veterans Motorcycle
Association. We had many volunteers that
gave their time to help sort food, as well
as deliver it to needy veterans and families.
And although a food donation is a shortterm
fix to a much more complicated
challenge, it was well received and greatly
appreciated by all. So again, for all those
whose generosity and hard work made the
food drive a success-THANK YOU!
On a very important note, I’d like to
announce that our 2017 survey will be
distributed to veterans of the Florida
Panhandle on the 2nd of January and
will be available until the 1st of February.
I highly encourage all veterans to take
time to complete the survey! The survey
should take no more than ten minutes to
complete and it will provide us with very
useful information on how we’re doing in
our service to you, as well as which veterans
needs require attention and focus. Without
your input, we can never truly know how
we can best support you. As an incentive,
we are going to have a drawing and award
FIVE, $100 Amazon gift cards to five lucky
winners that enter their data in the survey.
Please take the survey-you can’t win if you
don’t take it!
Finally, as we reflect on the work we’ve
done in the past year, it reminds us of how
much more work there is to accomplish.
With that said, we can’t do it without your
help. As we start our fundraising push
for early 2017, I ask that you consider
Panhandle Warrior Partnership when
making your charitable contributions. We
will have a push to raise our grant match
for 2017, which will allow us to continue to
operate through the remainder of the year
and the spring of 2018. Without it, we will
be greatly limited in the services we can
provide, so every donation counts-and is
appreciated!
Again, I want to thank you for your support
and wish everyone a happy and prosperous
new year. And as always remember: if you
need us, we’re here for you; if you want to
help, we need you.
“The January 31 deadline is fast approaching, and people need to know there
is free assistance available to learn about their health plans, subsidies, and
eligibility,” said Karen Basha Egozi, CEO of the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida.
“We are encouraging people who are non-native English speakers or who have
complicated immigration situations to take advantage of this free help, especially
during this upcoming Latino Week of Action.”
What will you say cont.
resolutions multiple times daily to give them the required focus to fulfill them.
Science proves what Dale Carnegie knew all along about motivation and success.
Leading expert in behavior change, psychologist Paul Marciano says achieving
your goals isn’t about willpower. It’s about developing the right skills, executing
strategies, and having the patience that inevitably lead to success.
As per a new study Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, success
is correlated with aspects of your personality. It explains that “Personality is
generally more predictive than IQ on a variety of important life outcomes. Coauthors,
economist and Nobel laureate James Heckman, wrote that “Character is
a skill, not a trait,” and further emphasized that these non-cognitive skills can be
taught to help foster success. Such skills consist of problem solving skills, social
skills, perseverance, creativity, self-control and commitment. This would also
include how well you act in impromptu situation and how you communicate with
colleagues -- all crucial for achieving success in any field.
Dale Carnegie knew over one hundred years ago, how to motivate people to strive
for success. Founded in 1912, inspired by one man’s belief in the power of selfimprovement.
Since then, it’s evolved into a movement that’s crossed borders and
generations, showing people how to tap into the best parts of themselves to create
positive change. Today, through franchises in over 90 countries and all 50 states,
they help people gain greater influence and make meaningful contributions in the
places that matter most.
Develop your competencies and achieve your resolutions this year. Dale Carnegie
can support you in developing the necessary skills to do just that. Class forming
Mosaics cont.
Since 1957, the Americana Hotel was a Gateway to the America’s and his widely popular
hotel was emblematic of the resort hotel experience to 30 years of South American
Tourist to Miami. To wit, the Americana Hotel was the public ‘Living Room” to three
decades of Latino/a tourists! When Starwood came to me about the new St Regis Hotel
in Miami Beach to be constructed on the site of the Americana Hotel, I was in a good
position to help them in their goal of building a new hotel and demolishing the historic
Americana. By the 2000s, most of the art had been destroyed by interior renovations;
only the Mosaics of the Explorers remain of this grand hotel. Noting that the mosaics
displayed at the Americana, were art significant of worthy preservation, Jorge Perez,
of Perez Art Museum Miami, PAMM, instructed the construction company to carefully
cut the masonry walls supporting the 1” layer of mosaic material, and preserve the six
mosaics in six pieces each (Roughly 1’ deep x 22’ x 3’; each weighing under 2000 pounds).
Thus Starwood absorbed the cost of an interruption to their demolition schedule for
two weeks so that the Explorers mosaics could be carefully rescued from the building
prior to demolition.
After the implosion of the Americana and after the team designers were consulted; it
was determined that the art should be relocated to a warehouse for storage. Four years
later, I was rehired by Starwood as curator to find a suitable location in Florida for display.
At that time, Starwood’s investment in these mosaics was over $500,000 in rescue and
storage. I contacted the city of Tallahassee, our State’s Capital, because I considered it
the most suitable location. With Starwood and Wither’s Moving, we devised a method of
transport for the care of the art with appropriate packaging for ground transportation.
The Mosaics were delivered by Wither’s to AMWAT. Later the City removed the art from
AMWAT and stored it in a Warehouse off Railroad Square/Wahnish Way. After five years
of Starwood’s careful storage, and twice moved in the care of the city, this has resulted
in the art pieces languishing.
please join us on CapitalARTangels on Facebook. Plan to come to our event on January
28, 2017 at the Historic Martin House, to see images of the wonderful art treasure of the
Explorers; giants in our midst. For more information on the January event, please refer
contradictorias estaremos agotados
muy jóvenes porque físicamente
seremos unos mozos muy entrados
en años. Aunque existe la posibilidad
que ambas propuestas científicas se
pongan de acuerdo, creo que pasará
algún tiempo antes que nuestra
biología se adapte a la nueva velocidad
de la tierra pero cuando lo consigamos
posiblemente seremos muy rápidos y
con la edad que creemos tener.
Alliance (HHA) and has deleted the
“Opportunity, Inc.” portion of their
name. In September of 2015, a small
group incorporated a new non-profit
organization with the sole purpose
of continuing to provide temporary
shelter for women and families,
OPPORTUNITY PLACE, INC. In October
of 2015, Debra McDaniel joined the
staff as Executive Director of the
organization.
Our newly formed non-profit has
struggled but survived these past
months. One important source
of income has been government
funding, channeled through the
state of Florida and the local HHA.
In 2016, those funds designated for
homeless shelters was re-directed to
other federal programs Consequently,
those governmental funds we have
had access to up to 2016, will not be
available to our organization in 2017
and on.
THE SHELTER Campaign. The public
has stepped up and we are slowly
reaching our goal. Now our charge is
to replace that government funding
with additional grants and funding,
fund raisers and a continual support
of those in our community who
have reached out to us during this
campaign.
If you see the name OPPORTUNITY
PLACE or OPPORTUNITY PLACE,
INC., know that this is the shelter
for women and families who are
homeless, know that we accept all
homeless women and families if we
have room, know that we will help
them get on their feet and become
self-sufficient and ready to move on.
And know that we are always looking
for friends in our communities, to
volunteer to donate to be part of our
team.
Because of this redirection,
OPPORTUNITY PLACE unexpectedly
and immediately lost approximately
25% of its funding and found itself
with a threat to have to close our
doors. Instead, we appealed to the
public and began our first SAVE
