Introduction: The palliative patient care is a hard, complex, distressful task for patients, relatives and caregivers.
Generally the casual caregiver shows specific symptoms: physical, psychological, social and spiritual on the period
previous to death. It is still a very litlle studied subject with no deeply scientif approach, with limited trustworthy
tools and validated within Portuguese population. The majority of the reports evaluate, the needs of the casual
caregivers after the death, still the causal caregiver might show psychological and physical changes on the period
previous to death of the oncological palliative patient, which makes necessary the symptons measurement.
Objective: To identify a standard tool that can be applied on the casual caregivers of oncological palliative patients,
to evaluate their psychosocial needs.
Method: After data base and scientifically information research, eleven studies published between the years 2000
and 2015 were selected, that addressed the subject of the psychosocial needs of the casual caregivers of palliative
patients.
Result: On this systematical revision of the literature were found four instruments for evaluation of the needs of
causal caregivers of oncological palliative patients. One was selected, which translation guaranteed the language
equivalence between the original version in English and the re-translation into to Portuguese. This has been submitted
to a pre-test which results shown an ideal understanding and comprehension by the casual caregivers of oncological
palliative patients, allowing the multidimensional evaluation of the casual caregivers.
Conclusion: The identification of the psychosocial needs of the causal caregivers of oncological palliative patients
might provide directions and improve interventions as a whole. Therefore, the exact identification through a tool that
measures the right level of care which interferes with the comfort of the casual caretaker is highly relevant.
