PROLOGO"Soy el desesperado, la palabra sin ecos,el que lo perdió todo, y el que todo lo tuvo."(Pablo Neruda: Veinte poemas, VIII)SUERTE DE ÁNGEL, a la vez luminoso y tétrico, amoroso y rebelde, desesperado yardoroso, Charles Baudelaire tuvo en su mundo y en el mundo actual de la poesía unlugar preponderante. Llegó, lo ocupó y perdura inmortal. Su labor poética fuecompletada por la prosa, la crítica y la revelación en Francia de un precursor: suendemoniado y trágico, Edgar Poe. Además su propia existencia fue una simbiosis sólocomparable con las de sus próximos Rimbaud y Verlaine. En este volumenpresentamos, sin la alteración que hubiera impuesto un presuntuoso, irreverente y hastadiríamos agraviante prurito versificador, casi en su totalidad, la que es su perdurablelabor poética. Como en anteriores circunstancias con Whitman, Rilke y Rimbaud,vertimos ahora al castellano corriente sus divinas palabras, expresión dela esencia poética suya. Lo otro, consecuencia de una obligada y servil adaptación a lamétrica, la rima y otras zarandajas del menester poético, además de adocenado, habríaresultado un agravio para nuestro poeta incomparable e inimitable, a la vez que deslealactitud ante el lector. Se le brinda aquí, pues, el verbo mas nunca la música sublime deCharles Baudelaire. Es, diríamos, sólo la trama sobre la que urdió sus sinfoníasperdurables.
