There is a difference between the eastern and westernbasins: the eastern Mediterranean is mainly a region of oilproduction, and there are only a few big and well-definedindustrial centers contributing to contamination by oil. In thewestern Mediterranean the main sources of oil pollution arethe numerous industrial oil processing enterprises and theheavy transshipment of their products.Up to now, Algeria is the only country in the westernMediterranean with important oil production, but in thefuture the exploitation of oil on the Spanish continental shelfmay aggravate the situation in that part of the sea if thedeposits found near Tarragona and Castellon turn out to beimportant.
