Slemenson“Lógica <strong>de</strong> <strong>lo</strong> <strong>preconciente</strong>”An alumnus of the University of Teheran, MIT, and Columbia University, Dr. Za<strong>de</strong>h isa fel<strong>lo</strong>w of the IEEE, AAAS, ACM and AAAI, and a member of the National Aca<strong>de</strong>myof Engineering. He held NSF Senior Postdoctoral Fel<strong>lo</strong>wships in 1956-57 and 1962-63,and was a Guggenheim Foundation Fel<strong>lo</strong>w in 1968. Dr. Za<strong>de</strong>h was the recipient of theIEEE Education Medal in 1973 and a recipient of the IEEE Centennial Medal in 1984.In 1989, Dr. Za<strong>de</strong>h was awar<strong>de</strong>d the Honda Prize by the Honda Foundation, and in 1991received the Berkeley Citation, University of California.In 1992, Dr. Za<strong>de</strong>h was awar<strong>de</strong>d the IEEE Richard W. Hamming Medal "For seminalcontribu tions to information science and systems, including the conceptualization offuzzy sets." He became a Foreign Member of the Russian Aca<strong>de</strong>my of Natural Sciences(Computer Sciences and Cybernetics Section) in 1992 and received the Certificate ofCommendation for AI Special Contributions Award from the International Foundationfor Artificial Intelligence. Also in 1992, he was awar<strong>de</strong>d the Kampe <strong>de</strong> Feriet Prize andbecame an Honorary Member of the Austrian Society of Cybernetic Studies.In 1993, Dr. Za<strong>de</strong>h received the Rufus Ol<strong>de</strong>nburger Medal from the American Societyof Mechanical Engineers "For seminal contributions in system theory, <strong>de</strong>cision analysis,and theory of fuzzy sets and its applications to AI, linguistics, <strong>lo</strong>gic, expert systems andneural networks." He was also awar<strong>de</strong>d the Grigore Moisil Prize for FundamentalResearches, and the Premier Best Paper Award by the Second International Conferenceon Fuzzy Theory and Techno<strong>lo</strong>gy. In 1995, Dr. Za<strong>de</strong>h was awar<strong>de</strong>d the IEEE Medal ofHonor "For pioneering <strong>de</strong>ve<strong>lo</strong>pment of fuzzy <strong>lo</strong>gic and its many diverse applications."In 1996, Dr. Za<strong>de</strong>h was awar<strong>de</strong>d the Okawa Prize "For outstanding contribution toinformation science through the <strong>de</strong>ve<strong>lo</strong>pment of fuzzy <strong>lo</strong>gic and its applications."In 1997, Dr. Za<strong>de</strong>h was awar<strong>de</strong>d the B. Bolzano Medal by the Aca<strong>de</strong>my of Sciences ofthe Czech Republic "For outstanding achievements in fuzzy mathematics." He alsoreceived the J.P. Wohl Career Achievement Award of the IEEE Systems, Science andCybernetics Society. He served as a Lee Kuan Yew Distinguished Visitor, lecturing atthe National University of Singapore and the Nanyang Techno<strong><strong>lo</strong>gica</strong>l University inSingapore, and as the Gulbenkian Foundation Visiting Professor at the New Universityof Lisbon in Portugal. In 1998, Dr. Za<strong>de</strong>h was awar<strong>de</strong>d the Edward Feigenbaum Medalby the International Society for Intelligent Systems, and the Richard E. Bellman ControlApendice 298
