Uno no alcanza acompr<strong>en</strong><strong>de</strong>r cómo esos mismos funcionarios participan atítulo honorario <strong>en</strong> activida<strong>de</strong>s <strong>de</strong> grupos que actúan almarg<strong>en</strong> <strong>de</strong> todo compromiso legal. Sólo así se explica laactitud <strong>de</strong>safiante <strong>de</strong> la "ARCHAELOGICAL SOCIETYOF PANAMA" fundada el 13 <strong>de</strong> Diciembre <strong>de</strong> 1949 conse<strong>de</strong> <strong>en</strong> la Zona <strong>de</strong>l Canal y dirigida por estadounid<strong>en</strong>sesque ti<strong>en</strong>e como su "particular hobby" la huaquería <strong>en</strong>todo el territorio nacional, <strong>de</strong> lo que dan cu<strong>en</strong>ta <strong>en</strong> "ASHORT HISTORY OF THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SOCIE-TY OF PANAMA" don<strong>de</strong> B . J . Brown, relata"Before the organization of this Society, small groupsor persons would head for the Panama interior or nearbyjungle to explore, take photographs, make archaeologicalexcavations, collect specim<strong>en</strong>s, pan gold, or just take atrip - each individual conc<strong>en</strong>trating <strong>en</strong> his particularhobby or interest . After many such trips one of the mostavid of the specim<strong>en</strong> collectors proposed that perhapsit would be better te trips, exchange information, helpother, and sponsor suggestion was not acted upon untilsome time later-nearly t<strong>en</strong> years ago, wh<strong>en</strong> some of thetrip-takers, mostly interested in archaeology, began tesee the advantages of such a plan . They first informalmeetin was held in May 1949, te discuss the i<strong>de</strong>a of Mr .H. H. Shacklett for forming an Archaeological club . (2)Mr. K. W. Vinton had consulted with the ExecutiveSecretary of the Panama Canal and reported that suchan organization with official recognition was possible .So it was agreed te organize and B . J.
