La historia<strong>de</strong>l texto <strong>de</strong>l poeta es una <strong>de</strong> las más complicadas entre los autoreslatinos, pues ni un solo manuscrito recoge la totalidad <strong>de</strong> susobras; a<strong>de</strong>más, los numerosos manuscritos que contienen obras<strong>de</strong>l poeta, se suman a otros muchos <strong>de</strong> otros autores -o anónimos-en los que se transmiten algunas <strong>de</strong> las obras <strong>de</strong> Ausonio,bajo su nombre unas veces, otras muchas atribuidas a otros autoreso sin atribución expresa. Como es <strong>de</strong> esperar, la critica se divi<strong>de</strong>,básicamente, entre quienes piensan que esa diversidad parte<strong>de</strong>l propio Ausonio, que hizo dos ediciones <strong>de</strong> su obra en vida (ypreparaba al parecer la tercera cuando murió), <strong>de</strong> modo que cadafamilia <strong>de</strong> mss. representaría una edición antigua, y quienes piensanque todos estos códices presentan un texto -seleccionadocon criterios antológicos en cada caso- proce<strong>de</strong>nte <strong>de</strong> un arquetipo,formado inmediatamente tras la muerte <strong>de</strong>l poeta, en el quese contendrían la totalidad <strong>de</strong> los opúsculos. A nuestro enten<strong>de</strong>r,la primera opción -que fue sugerida por Bran<strong>de</strong>s (1881) y Seeck(GGA 1887) y seguida <strong>de</strong>s<strong>de</strong> entonces <strong>de</strong> un modo casi incuestionado-no se pue<strong>de</strong> <strong>de</strong>fen<strong>de</strong>r sin muchas matizaciones; a partir <strong>de</strong>
