En ocasiones, es la misma lengua (muerta) la que <strong>de</strong> tabernáculopasa a ser reliquia: el Cortesano <strong>de</strong> Speroni lleva al extremola superposición <strong>de</strong> ambas analogías cuando juega el vocablolengua en el sentido idiomático y el fisiológico: el latín es lalengua <strong>de</strong> la cabeza (capo) <strong>de</strong>l mundo (Roma), hoy muerta, seca,fría, como la lengua <strong>de</strong>l santo <strong>de</strong> Padua que allí se venera. Losque hablan latín son como aquellos que ponen en su boca viva unpedazo <strong>de</strong> carne inerte (Speroni, 1542, p. 119v).Los sacerdotes-letrados no muestran, sino que celan; impi<strong>de</strong>ntocar las ciencias con la mano (((non con le mani tocchiamon;«qu'il n'est permis toucher avecques la mainn) y encierran las disciplinas<strong>de</strong>ntro <strong>de</strong> la lengua, a salvo <strong>de</strong> toda profanación. Se comportan-en palabras <strong>de</strong> Du Bellay- como venerables druidasque esoterizan falsamente sus conocimientos ((me craignent rientant que le secret <strong>de</strong> leurs mysteres, qu'il fut apprendre d'eaux»,Du Bellay, 1972, 1 10, p. 50).La sabiduría está, en suma, secuestrada en la latinidad y custodiadapor los doctos. Esta i<strong>de</strong>a <strong>de</strong> la lengua como encierro no<strong>de</strong>ja <strong>de</strong> tener relación con la representación iconográfica <strong>de</strong> laGramática (entiéndase latina) que figura una mujer joven que lleva,en su mano diestra, una llave: la que abre la puerta <strong>de</strong> la torre<strong>de</strong> la sabiduría, en cuyas diversas alturas se alojan las distintasciencias, coronadas, en la mayor, por la filosofía y la teología. Lasanalogías anti-latinas rentabilizan, en cierto modo, esta representacióntradicional que piensa las ciencias en términos espaciales yla lengua como acceso: frente a los títulos manualísticos consagradosal resto <strong>de</strong> las disciplinas (métodos, sistemas, teatros) los <strong>de</strong>gramática suelen llamarse 'puerta', Ianua Linguarum (cf. Ong,1971, p. 139). Latinistas y <strong>de</strong>fensores <strong>de</strong>l vulgar comparten esta visión,con una única pero importante diferencia: para los doctos, lallave <strong>de</strong> la Gramática abre y franquea, para los provulgares, secuestray cierra 18.Las lenguas clásicas, ya sean urnas <strong>de</strong> <strong>de</strong>spojos, ya sean ellasEn la «Carta Dedicatoria)) al Comendador <strong>de</strong> Monreal que abre la Lógica Vulgar <strong>de</strong> PedroSimón Abril, la preservación <strong>de</strong> la ciencia en un circulo <strong>de</strong> expertos está así <strong>de</strong>scrita: «Vernán,dizen, luego a ser <strong>de</strong>spreciadas y tenidas en poco las ciencias, si se hacen tan comunes.No temen ellos que las ciencias sean <strong>de</strong>spreciadas, que bien saben que la comunicacion <strong>de</strong>lbien no lo haze ser tenido en poco. Lo que temen, es que ellos no seran tan estimados, comogente que solos tienen la llave <strong>de</strong> la dotrina» (Simón Abril, 1587, s.p.).
EL TÓPOS DE LA MUERTE DE LAS LENGUAS CLÁSICAS 47mismas una reliquia, resultan asociadas al campo <strong>de</strong> lo funerarioy es precisamente en el humanismo renacentista -momento <strong>de</strong>recepción y discusión <strong>de</strong> los clásicos y <strong>de</strong> reforma <strong>de</strong> los estudiosgriegos y latinos- cuando se <strong>de</strong>creta -metafóricamente- la <strong>de</strong>función<strong>de</strong> la clasicidad 19.Es el ciclo orgánico como patrón <strong>de</strong> la percepción <strong>de</strong> las lenguasel que permite (a) la oposición entre lenguas muertas y vivas,con la consiguiente invalidación <strong>de</strong> las comparaciones entre laslenguas clásicas y las vulgares, (b) la inversión <strong>de</strong> la inferioridad<strong>de</strong> las vulgares, entendiéndola como valor e indicio <strong>de</strong> perfecciónfutura, y (c) sostiene indirectamente el voluntarismo lingüístico, ola capacidad <strong>de</strong> actuación <strong>de</strong> los hablantes para ennoblecer su comúninstrumento, especialmente a través <strong>de</strong>l trabajo poético y lareducción a regla y arte, verda<strong>de</strong>ra agricultura <strong>de</strong>l vulgar.M." Oxfordl9 Muy pronto, sin embargo, los foros analógicos aplicados al latín, y en general a las lenguasclásicas frente a las vulgares, se aplican al vulgar docto, alterándose la i<strong>de</strong>ntidad <strong>de</strong> losmiembros <strong>de</strong>l tema. Los reglamentadores y moralizadores <strong>de</strong>l vulgar (autores <strong>de</strong> gramáticas,académicos, etc.) justifican su tarea no sólo previendo -como sería el caso <strong>de</strong> Nebrija- sinoconstatando la «<strong>de</strong>clinación», la (corrupción)) y la ((bastardía)). El Granduca Cosimo <strong>de</strong> Mediciinsta a la Aca<strong>de</strong>mia Florentina a fijar las «reglas <strong>de</strong> la lengua)) para que se leyesen en lasescuelas, observando que la puritas <strong>de</strong>l florentino está corrompiéndose (((perciocché pare chela purita <strong>de</strong>l linguaggio fiorentino sia oggi assai corrotta, e che si vada giornalmente corrompendo,il che non pare che sia onore <strong>de</strong>lla citta)), Carta <strong>de</strong> Cosimo <strong>de</strong> Medici al cónsul <strong>de</strong> laAca<strong>de</strong>mia el 2-1-1572, apud Migliorini, 1978~. p. 366). Bernardo Davanzati consi<strong>de</strong>ra la regulación<strong>de</strong>l uso <strong>de</strong>l vulgar a partir <strong>de</strong>l magisterio <strong>de</strong> los autores trecentistas indicando que no eslo mismo la lengua florentina «viva» que la que ((s'impara come le lingue morte in tre Scrittoriflorentini che non han potuto dire ogni cosan (Carta a B. Valori el 20-5-1959, apud Migliorini,1978~. p. 359). Los foros analógicos aquí reseñados tienen pues aplicaciones complejas y no univocas:la progresiva reglamentación <strong>de</strong> un vulgar docto, literario e ilustre <strong>de</strong>termina que ésteocupe eventualmente la posición <strong>de</strong>l latín en el par que constituye el tema analógico frente aun ((vulgar-vulgar» o lengua <strong>de</strong> uso. Estas nuevas aplicaciones <strong>de</strong> las nociones <strong>de</strong> purezalcorrupción(o bastardía) y muertelvida parecen ahora respon<strong>de</strong>r más bien a la oposición entrelo escrito y lo oral, por una parte, y entre lengua docta y lengua <strong>de</strong> la plebe. Le., toda reglamentacióne ilustración <strong>de</strong> la lengua vulgar la sustrae al vulgo y, por así <strong>de</strong>cir, la 'mata'. Lareformulación tópica <strong>de</strong> la lingua aliena <strong>de</strong> los poetas comparece profusamente en los tratadistas<strong>de</strong> poética en vulgar, y, en el caso <strong>de</strong> España, en las Anotaciones <strong>de</strong> Fernando <strong>de</strong> Herrera.Toda lengua <strong>de</strong> arte ha <strong>de</strong> arrancarse <strong>de</strong>l uso (cf. Morales, 1977, pp. 183-7). En otros términos:la lengua docta, literaria o científica, es siempre una lengua muerta.
