En otros términos, mantienencon la lengua una relación <strong>de</strong> constructores más que <strong>de</strong> usuarios.Por ello, la ilustración <strong>de</strong>l vulgar exige dabeur & industrie))(Du Bellay, 1972, 1 3, p. 29) y requiere un trabajo técnico. Estaconcepción activa y constructiva es la que subyace en la Responseaux injures et calomnies <strong>de</strong>je ne scay quels predicantereaux <strong>de</strong> Ge-&ve (1563), cuando Pierre <strong>de</strong> Ronsard expone todo aquello que elfrancés le <strong>de</strong>be a su intervención poética: ((Adonques pour hausserma langue maternelle / indonté du labeur, je travaillay pour elle /Je fis <strong>de</strong> mots nouveaux, je r'appellay les vieux / Si bien que sonrenom je poussay jusqu'aux Cieux. / Je fis d'autre facon que n'avoyentles antiques, / Vocables composez et phrases poetiques, /Et mis la Poesie en te1 ordre qu'apres, / Le Francoys fut egal auxRomains et aux Grecw.La ilustración <strong>de</strong>l vulgar se produce mediante una regulacióncon patrones latinos y la asimilación <strong>de</strong> sus términos, mediante ladigestión <strong>de</strong> la latinidad -como propone Du Bellay- siguiendoel mismo procedimiento que los romanos con los griegos (((immitantles meilleurs aucteurs Grecz, se transformant en eux, les <strong>de</strong>vorant,& apres les avoir bien digerez, les convertissant en sang &nourriturep cf. Du Bellay 115491 1972, 1 7, pp. 36-7). La regla es unfactor <strong>de</strong> riqueza (41 est vray que par sucession <strong>de</strong> tens les unes,pour avoir esté plus curieusement reglées, sont <strong>de</strong>venues plus richesque les autres)), cf. Du Bellay, [1549] 1972, 1 1, p. 22), y la poéticay la retórica los instrumentos <strong>de</strong> la agricultura <strong>de</strong>l vulgar.La tesis <strong>de</strong>l voluntarismo lingüístico, que avala la posibilidad<strong>de</strong> intervención sobre la lengua, es, sin embargo, simultáneamente,una acusación para sus hablantes pasados y presentes: éstos nohan sabido enriquecer -pues <strong>de</strong> ellos <strong>de</strong>pen<strong>de</strong>- su lengua materna.La disculpa <strong>de</strong> la negligencia está a cargo <strong>de</strong>l lugar comúnque opone -y complementa- las armas y las letras: en el casoespañol, esto se concreta en la urgencia bélica <strong>de</strong> la Reconquista(Herrera [1580] 1972, H-1, p. 313). Sin embargo, esta explicación noexpone una situación particular. Muy semejante es la consi<strong>de</strong>ración<strong>de</strong> Du Bellay cuando excusa a sus antepasados y connacionales<strong>de</strong> la indigencia <strong>de</strong>l francés afirmando que éstos tuvieron enmás estima «le bien faire que le bien dire» (Du Bellay, [1549]1972, 1 3, p. 26), y que, por tanto, han legado a la posteridad losejemplos vivos <strong>de</strong> la virtud más que sus preceptos («mieux aymans

Ilumina también la analogía -menos asimilativaque la digestión <strong>de</strong> los clásicos- <strong>de</strong>l robo y <strong>de</strong>l <strong>de</strong>spojo:Du Bellay trata el enriquecimiento <strong>de</strong>l francés mediante las metáforas<strong>de</strong>l viaje, <strong>de</strong>l exilio, y <strong>de</strong>l posterior retorno con cosas peregrinas(cf. Ferguson, 1983, p. 47). El saqueo <strong>de</strong> la latinidad se cifraen analogías bélicas y como una hazaña nacional. El mo<strong>de</strong>lo <strong>de</strong>Du Bellay es, significativamente, el <strong>de</strong> la entrada gala en Roma(«La donq', Francoys, marchez couraigeusement vers cette superbecité Romaine: & <strong>de</strong>s serves <strong>de</strong>pouilles d'elle (comme vous avezfait plus d'une fois) ornez vous temples & autelz)), Du Bellay,1972, 1 10, p. 47) <strong>de</strong> tal modo que la oposición justificativa entre elhacer y el <strong>de</strong>cir, y entre las armas y las letras, se resuelve mediantela épica <strong>de</strong> la lengua (esto es, mediante la i<strong>de</strong>ntificación analógica<strong>de</strong> lengua y nación). El <strong>de</strong>cir es también una forma <strong>de</strong> hacer y elenriquecimiento <strong>de</strong>l vulgar es un hecho <strong>de</strong> armas. Si el mo<strong>de</strong>lo <strong>de</strong>la entrada gala en Roma es el que propone la i<strong>de</strong>ntificación nacionalista<strong>de</strong> Du Bellay, Herrera trata las innovaciones métricas <strong>de</strong>Santillana en términos afines, si bien, en este caso, el mo<strong>de</strong>lo nacionales el <strong>de</strong>scubrimiento y la conquista. Los logros métricos <strong>de</strong>Santillana están así <strong>de</strong>scritos: (c.. el Marqués <strong>de</strong> Santillana, grancapitán español y fortísimo caballero, tentó primero con singularosadía y se arrojó venturosamente en aquel mar no conocido, yvolvió a su nación con los <strong>de</strong>spojos <strong>de</strong> las riquezas peregrinas; testimonio<strong>de</strong> esto son algunos sonetos suyos dignos <strong>de</strong> veneraciónpor la gran<strong>de</strong>za <strong>de</strong>l que los hizo, y por la luz que tuvieron en lasombra y confusión <strong>de</strong> aquel tiempo» (~errera, 1972, H-1, p.314).La oposición entre lenguas vivas y muertas se manifiesta tambiénen el <strong>de</strong>bate sobre la vulgarización <strong>de</strong> las disciplinas. Los argumentosprovulgares se caracterizan por el intento <strong>de</strong> romper laasociación entre las palabras y las cosas, o entre la expresión y lasabiduría, para <strong>de</strong>mostrar que ninguna lengua significa mejor queotra (Speroni, 1542, pp. 122r-129v; Du Bellay, 1972, 1 10, pp. 49y 11, p. 55; Ronsard, 1969, p. 418). Cuando Ronsard alaba la traducción<strong>de</strong> Hamelin <strong>de</strong> Tito Livio (L'excellence <strong>de</strong> Iésprit <strong>de</strong>I'homme, 1578) -escritura no precisamente científica- hace lasiguiente <strong>de</strong>claración <strong>de</strong> principios (Ronsard, 1969, p. 418):
