Una serie <strong>de</strong> términos recurrentes (supranacionalmente) cifranla incapacidad <strong>de</strong>l vulgar. Muy notablemente, la inopia (frente a lacopia latina), la «pobreza», la «<strong>de</strong>snu<strong>de</strong>z» y la ((esterilidad)). Laslenguas vulgares son balbucientes o bárbaras frente al refinamientoy elocuencia <strong>de</strong> las clásicas: constituyen una herramienta rudimentariay torpe. En el diálogo <strong>de</strong> Speroni, aparece como «poveralingua)) (Speroni, 1542, p. 109v), amén <strong>de</strong> corrupta corrotta e guasta»(Speroni, 1542, p. 196v): la lengua toscana, según comenta Lázaro,es a la latina como las heces al vino, como la laguna podridaal río que la alimenta (Speroni, 1542, p. 106v) l'. Du Bellay opone lalengua ((copieuse & riche» a la ((pauvre & sterile)) (o «pauvre &nue, qu'elie a besoing <strong>de</strong>s ornemenz))), (Du Bellay, [1549] 1972, I3, pp. 26-7). En general, la pobreza y la <strong>de</strong>snu<strong>de</strong>z constituyen el foroanalógico <strong>de</strong> la carencia <strong>de</strong> ornamento (insuficiencia elocutiva)tanto como el <strong>de</strong> la carencia <strong>de</strong> terminología específica (insuficienciacientífica). Uno <strong>de</strong> los puntos principales <strong>de</strong> las <strong>de</strong>fensas <strong>de</strong> lalengua, por tanto, es <strong>de</strong>shacer el tópos <strong>de</strong>l escultor sin mármol. Dehecho, la Deffence <strong>de</strong> Du Bellay enuncia, como su cometido fundamental,persuadir <strong>de</strong> lo contrario a aquellos que estiman «quenostre volgaire soit incapable <strong>de</strong> toutes bonnes lettres & eruditiom(Du Bellay, [1549] 1972, 1 1, p. 22). En cierto modo, todas laspoéticas vulgares <strong>de</strong>l siglo son una toma <strong>de</strong> posición sobre este <strong>de</strong>bate<strong>de</strong> base, aunque no alleguen argumentos específicos: su existenciasupone la aceptación y sanción <strong>de</strong> la capacidad <strong>de</strong>l instrumentoque se legisla.Las intervenciones pro-latinas <strong>de</strong> las <strong>de</strong>fensas confieren más relevanciaa la cuestión <strong>de</strong> vulgarización <strong>de</strong> la sabiduría, cuyas consecuenciasacadémicas <strong>de</strong>scriben. La resistencia a la vulgarizacióncientífica une en la argumentación los aspectos exclusivamente lingüístico~con los sociales y políticos, y el <strong>de</strong>bate se <strong>de</strong>sarrolla enGiannozzo Manetti y en el De Florentinorum litteratura principes fere synchroni scriptores <strong>de</strong> B.Accolti (1459-64). El comentario a Dante <strong>de</strong> Cristoforo Landino (1481) entien<strong>de</strong> que éste esmás que un Virgilio vulgar, porque encontró su lengua en peor estado que Virgilio el latín (cf.Baron, 1955, 11, pp. 304-10; para los lugares relativos en el Commento alla divina Commedia <strong>de</strong>Boccaccio, cf. Fubini, 1961, pp. 516-8). La recepción <strong>de</strong> Dante en el siglo xvi es mas polémica.Para algunos tratadistas importantes -como Minturno-- Petrarca pasa a ser el verda<strong>de</strong>roVirgilio vulgar a efectos <strong>de</strong> ennoblecimiento <strong>de</strong> la lengua. Por otra parte, circula el tópos que,atendiendo a particularida<strong>de</strong>s estilisticas, equipara Dante a Homero y Petrarca a Virgilio." Para la consi<strong>de</strong>ración <strong>de</strong> las lenguas vulgares como corruptas, véase el estudio <strong>de</strong> Bahner,1966, pp. 72-84 y 119-146 (especialmente para el castellano). El lugar <strong>de</strong> la corrupción sueleser concomitante con el <strong>de</strong> la bastardia y el adulterio cf. Baron, 1955, 11, pp. 304-305 (especialmentepara las tesis <strong>de</strong> Flavio Biondo); Asensio, 1960. Fubini (1961, pp. 535-536) retrotrae la asociación<strong>de</strong> los lugares <strong>de</strong> la corrupción y la bastardía a la noción <strong>de</strong> lingua mista <strong>de</strong> Isidoro<strong>de</strong> Sevilla. La discusión lingüística se articula en torno a larelación entre sabiduría y elocuencia y entre las palabras y las cosas.La discusión ética y política, en torno a la conveniencia <strong>de</strong>((sentar al vulgo al banquete <strong>de</strong>l saber)), cuestión ésta relacionadacon el uso <strong>de</strong>l vulgar en la vida cotidiana por parte <strong>de</strong> los doctos.Las <strong>de</strong>fensas ofrecen una neta división entre clase letrada y plebeya,sin gradación intermedia, que polariza la argumentación. Nosólo se dirime la excelencia <strong>de</strong>l latín o la incapacidad <strong>de</strong>l vulgar,sino el mantenimiento <strong>de</strong> una distancia y un acceso a la sabiduríapara contener al vulgo y mantener cercada, con signos reconocibles,la ignorancia. Los doctos <strong>de</strong>ben evitar el uso <strong>de</strong>l vulgar inclusoal dirigirse al vulgo o al hablar en su presencia para evi<strong>de</strong>nciarla frontera,accioché'l vulgo arrogante con l'esempio, et auttorita digrandi huomini, non pren<strong>de</strong>sse argomento di far conserva <strong>de</strong>-Ile sue brutture; et ad arte ridurre la sua ignorantia. (Speroni,1542, p. 107v).Esta y otras afirmaciones semejantes son el blanco <strong>de</strong> las invectiva~y chanzas <strong>de</strong>l sector pro-vulgar. El Dialogo <strong>de</strong> Speronipresenta un buen número <strong>de</strong> escenas ridículas <strong>de</strong> doctos hablandolatín en el trato cotidiano (Speroni, 1542, p. 11 lr), incluido el arbitrio<strong>de</strong> reunirlos en una ciudad aparte, ya que entorpecerían labuena marcha <strong>de</strong> las existentes. Romulo Amaseo (<strong>de</strong>stacado polemista<strong>de</strong>fensor <strong>de</strong>l mantenimiento <strong>de</strong>l latín) había propuesto queel vulgar se utilizara solamente en la relación con los campesinosy merca<strong>de</strong>res, o, en suma, con la plebe. Bene<strong>de</strong>tto Varchi, tomandopie <strong>de</strong> esta sugerencia, ridiculiza a los pro-latinistas medianteiniciativas peregrinas, tales como hablar lenguas clásicas los días<strong>de</strong> fiesta y vulgares los laborables (cf.
