Y es Varrón quien lo localiza y explica su uso: «un poco a su <strong>de</strong>recha(<strong>de</strong> los Rostra) hacia la parte <strong>de</strong>l Comicio, hay una edificación, anivel más bajo, en don<strong>de</strong> los embajadores extranjeros enviados con algunamisión al Senado esperaban su audiencia. Este lugar se llamó Grecóstasis».En resumen, interesantísima y muy cuidada traducción <strong>de</strong>l Liber Prodigiorumsalpicado <strong>de</strong> ratones qiie roen oro, estatuas a las que les creceel pelo, culebras con cresta o cuatro patas, cerdos con pies y manos <strong>de</strong>persona, lluvias <strong>de</strong> leche, sangre, tierra o carne, vacas parlantes, fantasmasy gritos terroríficos, niños que gritan en el vientre materno, el marlevantándose en llamas, apariciones <strong>de</strong> naves en el cielo, ... constanciapara la posteridad <strong>de</strong> los milagros <strong>de</strong> los dioses paganos.N. Barcelona, Editorial Edhasa, 1<strong>99</strong>0.Este libro, según manifiesta su autor, preten<strong>de</strong> renovar el genero <strong>de</strong> lanovela histórica. Se utiliza la novela para acercar al lector <strong>de</strong> una maneramás directa a la realidad <strong>de</strong> la antigüedad tantas veces menospreciada poraca<strong>de</strong>micista. Si al leer el libro nos sentimos transportados por la humanidad<strong>de</strong> los personajes, también observamos que las <strong>de</strong>scripciones <strong>de</strong> suambiente y <strong>de</strong> sus pensamientos están rigurosamente basados en datoshistóricos, dándoles una viveza extraordinaria.Nos encontramos ante una novela <strong>de</strong> la que el lector sale con una i<strong>de</strong>abastante aproximada <strong>de</strong>l carácter y la vida en tiempos <strong>de</strong> la guerra civil<strong>de</strong> Mario y Sila. Es pues una obra casi didáctica con gran base en losautores latinos y griegos. En ella se relata la vida <strong>de</strong>s<strong>de</strong> su nacimientohasta su muerte <strong>de</strong> un romano, Lucio Livio, hijo <strong>de</strong> un senador.En los dos primeros capítulos «La infancia <strong>de</strong> un noble» y «La palomay el olivo>>, asistimos con todo lujo <strong>de</strong> <strong>de</strong>talles al nacimiento <strong>de</strong> Lucio, alreconocimiento por parte <strong>de</strong> su padre al levantarlo <strong>de</strong>l suelo, a su educaciónpor parte <strong>de</strong> profesores griegos, a las i<strong>de</strong>as senatoriales <strong>de</strong> su padrea las que terminará oponiéndose. En resumen, un fresco <strong>de</strong> los primerosaños <strong>de</strong> cualquier romano <strong>de</strong> elevada posición. Se incluyen la sorpresa <strong>de</strong>lniño ante la visión <strong>de</strong> su padre ejecutando los ritos <strong>de</strong> las lenzurias; la extrañezaque le producen las imagines maiorum; el cuento <strong>de</strong> Eros y Psiqué... Mientras por un lado asistimos a la infancia <strong>de</strong> Lucio, por otro lasconversaciones <strong>de</strong> su padre nos acercan a la realidad política <strong>de</strong> esos añoscon la amenaza <strong>de</strong> los Cimbrios y <strong>de</strong> Yugurta.Cuando Lucio crece lo vemos asistiendo a las Lupercules, <strong>de</strong>scritascon todo <strong>de</strong>talle, y en el foro recibiendo la toga viril. Después dará sus
RESEÑA DE LIBROS 177primeros pasos como abogado, al tiempo que sus padres lo prometen aAurelia, lo que no le impi<strong>de</strong> hacer excursiones a la Subura.En el capítulo 111 «Tras las huellas <strong>de</strong> Piteas», se introduce la notaexótica aventurera: Lucio realiza un viaje al Hiperbóreo queriendo verificarel periplo <strong>de</strong>l griego Piteas. En realidad sólo llega a Irlanda don<strong>de</strong><strong>de</strong>scribe con todo <strong>de</strong>talle las costumbres <strong>de</strong> los celtas (en algunas ocasionessiguiendo a César, como en el caso <strong>de</strong> los maniquíes <strong>de</strong> mimbre llenos<strong>de</strong> prisior~eros a los que se pren<strong>de</strong> fuego).El IV capítulo «Las manos ávidas <strong>de</strong> la muerte», contiene dos <strong>de</strong>scripcionesmemorables por su exactitud y valor documental: la boda <strong>de</strong> Lucioy Aurelia y el entierro <strong>de</strong> ésta cuando es asesinada por bandidos nocturnos.En el capítulo V «Saturnales», tras ser víctima <strong>de</strong> las prescripciones <strong>de</strong>Mario y per<strong>de</strong>r a su familia, Lucio se convierte en esclavo en Sicilia. Estaes una oportunidad para el historiador que recuerda las revueltas servilesy la condición <strong>de</strong> los esclavos en la isla. Contiene una cruda <strong>de</strong>scripción<strong>de</strong> la crucifixión <strong>de</strong> uno <strong>de</strong> ellos.El capítulo VI «El camino <strong>de</strong>l Honor)), nos acerca a unas eleccionesromanas y a los juegos <strong>de</strong> gladiadores, Lucio se quitará la vida al caerprisionero <strong>de</strong> Espartaco.Muy interesante es el apartado «Por una nueva novela histórica)) enel que el autor <strong>de</strong>clara que su misión ha sido revivir la mentalidad romanacon la mayor fi<strong>de</strong>lidad. Lo consigue gracias a esas <strong>de</strong>scripciones impecables.La edición <strong>de</strong> Edhasa contiene una orientación bibliográfica <strong>de</strong>lpropio autor que es <strong>de</strong> gran interés para profundizar en los diversos temasque se evocan en la novela.Un libro, en resumen, que enseña mucho (podría incluso utilizarse enclase) y que sería una buena introducción para el mundo clásico alejada<strong>de</strong> la i<strong>de</strong>alización renacentista.F. Esta primera entrega consta <strong>de</strong> dos partes.En la primera <strong>de</strong> ellas (Los comienzos), a cargo <strong>de</strong> Alberto Bernabé, seabordan los pasos a seguir <strong>de</strong>s<strong>de</strong> el punto <strong>de</strong> partida hasta la redacciónfinal, haciendo sugerencias generales y, en palabras <strong>de</strong>l autor (p. 34), consi<strong>de</strong>racionesbreves «<strong>de</strong> andar por casa». Apunta los vicios típicos <strong>de</strong>l investigadorprimerizo al realizar su trabajo, invitándole a buscar el puntomedio (aurea mediocritas) al tiempo que con<strong>de</strong>na las actitu<strong>de</strong>s extremas.
