Todo ello sinexcluir un también atestiguado De speculo, a tono con la originalidad ovidianaen este punto, y cuyo mayor inconveniente es la presencia <strong>de</strong> unapreposición <strong>de</strong> que falta en los <strong>de</strong>más títulos ovidianos aunque sería incluso<strong>de</strong> esverar en tratados «didácticos» como la Ars o los Remedia. Ental caso la especificación <strong>de</strong> medicamine ... podría <strong>de</strong>berse a la vista comercial<strong>de</strong> algún avispado librero (cf. Birt, Kritik und Hermeneutik ... 155; v.también Med. 47 y 68). Y ya que estamos con los títulos hay que <strong>de</strong>cirque el problema es mayor aun para las obras <strong>de</strong> Nigidio Fígulo (p. 20),y que no sabemos si varios <strong>de</strong> los títulos citados por los antiguos no correspon<strong>de</strong>ríanquizá a diversos libros <strong>de</strong> una sola obra (yo sospecho, porejemplo, que el De extis <strong>de</strong>bía <strong>de</strong> formar parte <strong>de</strong>l Augurium priuatum).Parece, pues, que quizá escribiese una obra llamada Sphaera y que Graecanicay Barbarica no fuesen sino partes <strong>de</strong> esta misma obra (cf. Boll,Sphaera ... 358; Swoboda, P. Nigidii Figuli ... 106; Kroll, s. ((Nigidius)), RE207; Schanz - Hosius, Geschichte <strong>de</strong>r romischen Literatur ... 1, p. 554). Encualquier caso creo que no tenemos documentado un De signis. En cuantoa los Phenomena <strong>de</strong> Ovidio bastará aquí <strong>de</strong>cir que con toda probabilidadno es, como se afirma (p. 56), el <strong>de</strong> Sulmona el único en mantenerel supuesto título original <strong>de</strong> Arato.En la p. 64 ha habido un cruce <strong>de</strong> líneas, el lasciuus <strong>de</strong> Quintiliano en10,1,88 se refiere claramente al Ovidio <strong>de</strong> las Heroidas (in herois), paralas Metamorfosis la cita correcta es 4.1.77 (ut Ouidius lasiuire in Metamorphosesinsolet). Es dudoso, por lo <strong>de</strong>más, si las formas encubren idénticoconcepto en ambos casos.Ya que el autor se muestra brillante en el momento <strong>de</strong> encontrar paralelismos<strong>de</strong> textos ovidianos, a propósito <strong>de</strong>l cur ego non dicam, Furia,te furiam? (Quint. IX.33.70; en p. 58) me gustaría citar un anónimo y estupendopostquam Crassus carbo factus [est], Carbo crassus factus est(Büchn. p. 56 = Sacerd. IV, 461 Keil), don<strong>de</strong> se da igual recurso. Estosjuegos <strong>de</strong> palabras con el significado <strong>de</strong> los nombres propios era frecuentísimoen la literatura latina, básicamente en razón <strong>de</strong> que la onomásticalatina se prestaba bien a este tipo <strong>de</strong> chascarrillos, y apunto que sería interesanterecopilar todos los ejemplos y estudiar el tema con la <strong>de</strong>bidaprofundidad.En la pág. <strong>99</strong> a propósito <strong>de</strong> Am. 111.12.29: Aeolios Zthacis inclusimusutribus Euros se nos advierte entre paréntesis <strong>de</strong> la relación entre contenidoe estilemas, ya que es precisamente inclusimus «la palabra incluida enel centro)), pero percibo -con íntimo regocijo- cierta ironía en la expresión«a los que gustan <strong>de</strong>scubrir sinergiam. Y es que creo que aquí tenemosun buen ejemplo <strong>de</strong> la relatividad que supone este tipo <strong>de</strong> críticamisticista y que ve bizarras relaciones forma-contenido por doquier, yaque, si por contenido enten<strong>de</strong>mos ahora el <strong>de</strong> la frase entera, en rigor loque cabría esperar es que Euros y no inclusimus ocupara esa posición cen-

De lo que continuamente nos hablan sí los antiguos es <strong>de</strong> anáforas,metáforas o anadiplosis, por ello es muy razonable el autor cuando <strong>de</strong>dicasuficiente espacio a enumerarnos las diversas y abundantes figuras ovidianas.Puesto que, como se dijo, esta versión pue<strong>de</strong> ser el único contacto conOvidio para muchos lectores, no sé si hubiese cabido un último esfuerzopara mantener en la traducción la imagen <strong>de</strong> la vital metáfora <strong>de</strong>sultoramoris (Am. I,3,15), que queda, sin embargo, suficientemente explicadaen la introducción (p. 106 y s.) o <strong>de</strong> algunas otras figuras, aparte <strong>de</strong> que quizáhubiese sido recomendable evitar el uso <strong>de</strong> paréntesis. En cuanto a lasnotas, precisas, abundantes e impecables para los temas mitólogicos-tan caros y familiares al autor- quizá <strong>de</strong>bería haberse extendido conpareja generosidad para otros apartados. Pienso que un no especialistahabría agra<strong>de</strong>cido una nota, por ej., en la p. 383 para ((túnica larga)), yaque si no se especifica que Aquiles se escondió en Esciros disfrazado <strong>de</strong>mujer, no se entien<strong>de</strong> que Deidamía <strong>de</strong>scubriera sólo en el tálamo «al serviolada que aquél era un varón)).Valiosísimo es el capítulo <strong>de</strong> pervivencias. campo también especialmentegrato al autor y don<strong>de</strong> pue<strong>de</strong> exhibir sus muchos conocimientos ysu familiaridad con la materia. La extensión (60 pp.) se justifica por elenorme influjo <strong>de</strong> Nasón -y <strong>de</strong>l Nasón erótico especialmente- en la literaturaeuropea, y no menos por los muchos, nuevos e interesantes ecosque el autor propone, así como por la luci<strong>de</strong>z con la que <strong>de</strong>terminadascuestiones son -me parece- <strong>de</strong>finitivamente resueltas (por ejemplo, laenmienda en p. 150 a un pasaje <strong>de</strong>l Triunphete <strong>de</strong> amor <strong>de</strong>l Marqués <strong>de</strong>Santillana; cf. Epos (1989, pp. 493-495). Siendo con frecuencia tan lábiles loscriterios para <strong>de</strong>terminar dón<strong>de</strong> tenemos una pervivencia antigua, a míme parece <strong>de</strong> enorme mérito lo convincente <strong>de</strong> los textos propuestos y <strong>de</strong>las <strong>de</strong>cenas y <strong>de</strong>cenas <strong>de</strong> ejemplos que el autor cita.De las erratas sólo vale la pena mencionar por divertida una gracia<strong>de</strong>l duen<strong>de</strong> <strong>de</strong> las imprentas que ha convertido un Maximiano Etrusco enun vienés Maximiliano (pp. 126 y 127).Se verá que todas estas matizaciones subjetivas en nada hacen <strong>de</strong>smerecerestas más <strong>de</strong> medio millar <strong>de</strong> páginas serias y elaboradas <strong>de</strong>l autor;al contrario, es precisamente su calidad la que propicia y sugiere un sinfin<strong>de</strong> comentarios y emociones.Y <strong>de</strong> Ovidio, ¿qué <strong>de</strong>cir? Pues que en latín o en castellano cada vezmás nos parece superior ese mago <strong>de</strong> la apóstrofe, capaz <strong>de</strong> interpelar aun anillo, a un papagayo, a su miembro fláccido, a sus tablillas ... en Am.III,2 las ráfagas <strong>de</strong> los tuteos <strong>de</strong> este inquieto parlanchín alcanzan a la muchachaa quien intenta seducir en el circo, a Hipodamía, a los vecinossentados a la <strong>de</strong>recha y <strong>de</strong>trás <strong>de</strong> la muchacha para que no la importunen,al vestido <strong>de</strong> ella, al polvo que ha manchado su vestido, a los espectadores,a la diosa Victoria, a un soldado, a Minerva, a los campesinos,a Venus, a un auriga, a los Quirites, y todo ello mientras nos ((retransmi-
