166 RESERA DELIBROSautores antiguos en este tipo <strong>de</strong> colecciones <strong>de</strong> mayor divulgación y esque a la traducción acompaña el texto latino quizá <strong>de</strong>bido a lo breve <strong>de</strong>la obra <strong>de</strong> Persio.Es loable acometer la traducción <strong>de</strong> una obra como la <strong>de</strong> Persio,puesto que es bien conocida la dificultad que entrañan su. lengua y su estilo,siempre tachados <strong>de</strong> oscuros, lo que no impi<strong>de</strong> consi<strong>de</strong>rar a Persiocomo un satírico fuera <strong>de</strong> serie.La edición seguida es la <strong>de</strong> W. V. Clausen y la más reciente <strong>de</strong> D. Bo,con ligeras variaciones en la puntuación. La traductora expone la difícultad<strong>de</strong> la traducción <strong>de</strong>bido al estilo «conciso y chocante)) <strong>de</strong> Persio, perohay que <strong>de</strong>cir que sale airosa <strong>de</strong> la maraña <strong>de</strong> dificulta<strong>de</strong>s. El libro comienzacon una introducción que conjuga la accesibilidad al público profanoy al especializado, al dar nociones generales <strong>de</strong>l género satírico y ala vez comenta con <strong>de</strong>tenimiento los coliambos y las seis sátiras, <strong>de</strong>sgranandoel programa poético <strong>de</strong> Persio, que da título al epígrafe. Con anterioridadtrata <strong>de</strong>l poeta y su tiempo, dando unas coor<strong>de</strong>nadas cronológicasnecesarias para cualquier lector no especializado, y <strong>de</strong>l género, <strong>de</strong>finiéndoloa partir <strong>de</strong> la opinión <strong>de</strong> sus propios autores. Bajo el epígrafe((Arte y moral» nos <strong>de</strong>fine a Persio como un satírico estoico, frente al resto<strong>de</strong> la sátira romana que no adopta ninguna corriente filosófico-moral;a continuación se <strong>de</strong>tiene en la estructura <strong>de</strong> las sátiras, en el estilo y enel humor corrosivo <strong>de</strong> nuestro autor.Nos proporciona una bibliografía muy completa <strong>de</strong> las ediciones, traduccionesy estudios sobre Persio.La obra en sí se inicia con la biografía <strong>de</strong> Persio, atribuida a ValerioProbo, crítico y editor <strong>de</strong> la época <strong>de</strong> Nerón.A partir <strong>de</strong> aquí siguen los coliarnbos y las sátiras, <strong>de</strong>lante <strong>de</strong> cada cualexiste una sinopsis que ayuda a su comprensión, ya que proporciona una divisióntemática <strong>de</strong> las mismas. Igualmente son <strong>de</strong> gran utilidad las notasa pie <strong>de</strong> página, que en un escritor tan complejo son necesarias para aclararlos términos que pudiesen quedar oscuros; no sólo especificando términoso giros <strong>de</strong> difícil traducción, sino también con comentarios queaclaran las alusiones a situaciones o personajes <strong>de</strong> la época.P. Gredos, 1989, 526 pp.Siguiendo normativas editoriales esta magnífica nueva entrega <strong>de</strong> lameritoria «Biblioteca Clásica Gredas)), que contiene las llamadas obras«eróticas» <strong>de</strong>l <strong>de</strong> Sulmona, presenta asimismo una introducción general atoda la obra ovidiana. Es esta extensa (casi 200 pp.) introducción uno <strong>de</strong>
los componentes más valiosos <strong>de</strong>l libro por el acopio, profundidad y actualización<strong>de</strong> información presentados y por la sensatez con la cualaquélla se expone. Entre los aspectos más positivos resaltaría yo, por sertambién <strong>de</strong>sgraciadamente menos frecuentes, la constante y generosamención <strong>de</strong> los testimonios antiguos, así como la precisión y exactitud <strong>de</strong>las referencias bibliográficas.Ya que hay razones para sospechar que esta colección -quizá la másambiciosa <strong>de</strong> las muchas que hoy compiten por hacer accesibles al granpúblico las obras <strong>de</strong> la literatura clásica- pueda convertirse en obligadolocus communis para muchos lectores interesados por el mundo clásico,sería quizá oportuno -ahora, que aún se está a tiempo- replantearsealgunas cuestiones formales, pero que pudieran en un futuro tener ciertatrascen<strong>de</strong>ncia. Así, yo creo que sería el momento <strong>de</strong> intentar unificar <strong>de</strong>finitivamentealgunos criterios en lo relativo, por ej., a la transcripción <strong>de</strong>la onomástica latina o <strong>de</strong> tradición latina. Aquí me parece que, con in<strong>de</strong>pen<strong>de</strong>ncia<strong>de</strong> que las formas se hayan conservado en nuestra lengua otradición romance, habría que tratar a unas y otras por igual y, portanto,puesto que <strong>de</strong>cimos Cicerón o Nasón, <strong>de</strong>beria <strong>de</strong>cirse Licóri<strong>de</strong> o Ericey evitar el tufillo galicista <strong>de</strong> esos Licoris o Érix. Es <strong>de</strong>cir. partir siempre<strong>de</strong>l acusativo excepto -como dije- en aquellos casos, como Apolo oVenus, don<strong>de</strong> la tradición haya sido diferente. Igualmente cabría quizátambién escribir (y pronunciar) Hircio y no Hirtio (p. 8). La coherencia<strong>de</strong>bería asimismo evitar un Corina cuando se escribe Ennio, .4nna Perenna(p. 36) o incluso Cotta (p. 12), que ciertamente parece lo correcto (almargen <strong>de</strong> cómo uno crea oportuno pronunciarlo). En castellano contamoscon palabras tan usuales (cultismos o no) como «perenne» o «innoble»y, aunque uno anda ya curado <strong>de</strong> espanto ante las salvajadas <strong>de</strong> loslocutores <strong>de</strong> los canales nacionales televisivos, no ha escuchado hasta elmomento <strong>de</strong>cir *perene o *inoble. En fin, la mesetaria repugnancia a ciertosgrupos conson~nticos no <strong>de</strong>beria -máxime si el castellano aspira aser realmente español- imponer una arbitrariedad que hiere hábitos eincluso sensibilidad <strong>de</strong> otros hablantes -la mayoría- don<strong>de</strong> tal uso esconsi<strong>de</strong>rado simplemente un brutal vulgarismo. Y ya que estamos connombres propios, me parece también que lo más pru<strong>de</strong>nte es <strong>de</strong>cir siempreVarron Atacino, ya que no está claro si fuese originario <strong>de</strong> un uicusAtax o bien, como afirma Porfirión (ad Hor sat. 1,10,46), recibiese el apelativoab AtaceJuuio (cf. Alessandri, AFLL 196718 y 196819 p. 56; Gayraud,BAGB 1971 p. 648).El ~roblema <strong>de</strong> la titulación <strong>de</strong> los llamados Medicamina es ciertamentecomplejo. El autor se <strong>de</strong>fine por un De medicamine faciei feminece.El plural, no obstante, parece apoyado por Ars 3,205: uzstrae medicaminaformae, aparte <strong>de</strong> que obviamente se recomiendan varios y no un solopotingue.
