160 RESERA DE LIBROS¿Arqueología, por tanto, <strong>de</strong> un pensamiento arcaico enmu<strong>de</strong>cido poranalfabetizado? Sí y no. Sí, porque la obra no excluye rememorar aquelfondo anterior a la Polis en el que con mayores honras y veneración separticipaba <strong>de</strong>l ainigma pero le interesa observar que la mayoría <strong>de</strong> lasfuentes, aun cuando con la conveniente interpretación darían algún testimonio<strong>de</strong> ese fondo prehistórico, están testimoniando mucho más supropia época, la <strong>de</strong> la Polis alfabetizada, la que se escribe a sí misma susleyes y sus reflexiones. Lo cual nos lleva a hacer mención <strong>de</strong> la otra objeciónreferida, tanto o más habitualmente, al Estructuralismo; la <strong>de</strong> apriorismoen el establecimiento <strong>de</strong> unas pautas binarias <strong>de</strong>l pensamiento que,más o menos notorias, se exten<strong>de</strong>rían a cualquier sistema <strong>de</strong> signos y, engeneral, a toda or<strong>de</strong>nación <strong>de</strong> la experiencia humana. Esto, <strong>de</strong>s<strong>de</strong> luego,ha producido en ocasiones resultados perogrullescos, como algunos manidosy tautológicos cuadros <strong>de</strong> ausencia y presencia que no dicen nada queno se sepa <strong>de</strong> antemano, cuando no una dudosa ortopedia <strong>de</strong> fenómenoscomplejos. Por mencionar una <strong>de</strong> las críticas, pensemos en el énfasis, aveces no menos discutible, <strong>de</strong> J. Goody en rechazar la realidad <strong>de</strong> talespautas binarias, aun como or<strong>de</strong>nadoras <strong>de</strong> la experiencia, en las culturastradicionales, recusándolas como una ilusión etnocentrista propiciada porla sistematización alfabética. Pero sea como sea, el caso es que los griegosya participaron <strong>de</strong> tal «ilusión», y no sólo por lo que se refiere a las categoríasmitopoéticas o a las sistematizaciones <strong>de</strong> los fisiólogos presocráticos.Al analizar como algo significante -y no como documento transparente-la atribución a la mujer griega <strong>de</strong> un lenguaje enigmáticoA. Iriarte no ha necesitado imponer una tabla <strong>de</strong> oposiciones que no estéya articulando el discurso <strong>de</strong> los textos que analiza y que podría correrasí: hombrelmujer, ciudadano/bárbaro, <strong>de</strong>mocracialtiranía, ágoralgineceo,guerralmaternidad, claro/oscuro, <strong>de</strong>snudo/velado, parresíalenigma,logos/retórica, filósofo/sofista ...Porque el libro no propone tanto una exposición <strong>de</strong> los atractivos <strong>de</strong>llado fantástico <strong>de</strong>l lenguaje enigmático como <strong>de</strong>l contenido i<strong>de</strong>ológico <strong>de</strong>lque acabaron revistiéndose las referencias que <strong>de</strong> él hizo el clasicismogriego, y no sin revisar los procesos previos. Cierto feminismo sentimentalse prestaría a suponer a la mujer griega como dotada <strong>de</strong> una palabra«mágica» y reprimida -o explotada en ciertas. condiciones. No es <strong>de</strong>s<strong>de</strong>ñableconsi<strong>de</strong>rar que el status social y cultural <strong>de</strong> la mujer griega pudoconferirle una psicología, y por tanto un lenguaje, más favorable a laconservación <strong>de</strong> maneras sapienciales seculares, pero la autora atien<strong>de</strong> especialmentea compren<strong>de</strong>r la función que tuvo <strong>de</strong>cir, para los que así <strong>de</strong>jarondicho, que la mujer se caracterizara por un lenguaje enigmático.Pues, en realidad, esto era contraponerlo al lenguaje que vehiculaba laRazón <strong>de</strong> la Polis; exclusión adjetivada, por tanto, <strong>de</strong> la voz <strong>de</strong> lo Otrocomo amenaza <strong>de</strong> Tiranía. Exclusión, bien entendido, que se extendió porigual a la razón jurídica <strong>de</strong> la mujer. Así, mediante el análisis <strong>de</strong> referenciasjurídicas y supuestos médicos, mitos «<strong>de</strong> conveniencia)) o leyendas <strong>de</strong>
RESENA DE LIBROS 161((féminas fatales)), <strong>de</strong> las gran<strong>de</strong>s tragedias. los dictámenes filosóficos olas ubicuas reflexiones <strong>de</strong> Plutarco muestran que en la referencia al lenguajeenigmático se llegó a jugar una popularidad discursiva <strong>de</strong>l pensamientogriego clásico más esencial que anecdótica, <strong>de</strong>splegada no sólo hacia unapolítica <strong>de</strong> la. Mujer; en realidad, a toda una política <strong>de</strong>l Saber y <strong>de</strong> la situación<strong>de</strong> sus objetos. En este sentido, y la obra le <strong>de</strong>dica sus páginas,pocos autores ilustrarían mejor que el ineludible Platón cómo en la recusación<strong>de</strong> lo Otro podían solaparse los abigarrados a<strong>de</strong>rezos <strong>de</strong>l sofista yla mujer: pintura, retórica, golosinas, enigmas, cosméticos y la astutaaporía <strong>de</strong>l velo, el nudo y la red.TUC~DIDES. Como el planprevisto es que los ochos libros <strong>de</strong> la Historia aparezcan en cuatro volumenes(dos libros por volumen <strong>de</strong> Gredos) lo que en este primero se nosbrindd es una Introducción general y la traducción <strong>de</strong> los libros 1 y 11.A la Introducción le <strong>de</strong>dica el Profesor Calonge un total <strong>de</strong> 103 páginas,articuladas en torno a las principales cuestiones sobre la vida y fechas<strong>de</strong> nacimiento y muerte <strong>de</strong> Tucídi<strong>de</strong>s, sobre su familia y su vinculacióncon la región <strong>de</strong> Tracia (páginas 7-17). Un segundo apartado loconstituyen los capítulos <strong>de</strong>dicados (pp. 17-30) a presentar los contendientes<strong>de</strong> la guerra, el origen <strong>de</strong>l imperio ateniense, la estructura social<strong>de</strong> Esparta y <strong>de</strong> Atenas, y el ambiente cultural <strong>de</strong> la época.
