Esperamos que con su lectura atenta pueda constatarse,mejor que con cualquier comentario, la originalidad y luci<strong>de</strong>z<strong>de</strong> nuestro insigne humanista, maestro <strong>de</strong> generaciones <strong>de</strong> helenistasy literatos. En efecto, Bergnes, en su Programa, aunque no sealejó totalmente <strong>de</strong> los tópicos que aparecían por doquier en los<strong>de</strong>más Programas o Métodos <strong>de</strong> la época (o poco anteriores), fue,con todo, muy original en la diafanidad <strong>de</strong> sus asertos, en la vivacidady fuerza que encerraban sus palabras -fruto <strong>de</strong> una largay laboriosz experiencia, no sólo como investigador, sino tambiéncomo docente- y en el sentido pragmático y concreto <strong>de</strong> sus postulados(estudio <strong>de</strong> las raíces griegas, retroversión constante, empleo<strong>de</strong> crestomatías, ejercicio <strong>de</strong> la traducción inmediata, etc.).PROGRAMA SOBRE LA LENGUA GRIEGA Y EL MEJOR MODODE ENSEÑARLA(Manuscrito inédito: Archivo <strong>de</strong> la Universidad <strong>de</strong> Barcelona, cajaA. Bergn.)El estudio <strong>de</strong> las lenguas es uno <strong>de</strong> los que más contribuyen al progreso<strong>de</strong> las faculta<strong>de</strong>s intelectuales <strong>de</strong> los jóvenes. El <strong>de</strong> las lenguas muertas,que tiene sus inconvenientes cuando exclusivo, produce ventajas muyatendibles también en el or<strong>de</strong>n moral, en las más nobles faculta<strong>de</strong>s <strong>de</strong>¡hombre. El joven que se <strong>de</strong>dica a la interpretación <strong>de</strong> los clásicos antiguos,al paso que ejercita el entendimiento, nutre su alma <strong>de</strong> los altospensamientos que rebosan en aquellas obras. No sólo fija la atención enel mecanismo <strong>de</strong> la lengua, en las energías o abundancias <strong>de</strong>l estilo, sinoque embargan también su alma los hechos heroicos, los gran<strong>de</strong>s acontecimientos,las revoluciones terribles que pintan en sus escritos, mostrandosus resultados y analizando sus causas. De ahí que los jóvenes se acostumbrancasi involuntariamente a reflexionar sobre aquellos hechos queson lecciones sublimes <strong>de</strong> moral y <strong>de</strong> filosofía; y hermanan los movimientos<strong>de</strong>l alma con las operaciones <strong>de</strong> la inteligencia.El estudio <strong>de</strong> la lengua griega sobre todo, <strong>de</strong> esta lengua incomparablepor su riqueza y armonía, que merece un lugar preferente en los estudios<strong>de</strong> la juventud europea, pue<strong>de</strong> consi<strong>de</strong>rarse a<strong>de</strong>más como una gimnásticapara el entendimiento. El joven que a él se <strong>de</strong>dica compara y combina diversosgéneros <strong>de</strong> analogía, ejercitando vivamente la actividad espontánea<strong>de</strong> su entendimiento, única que <strong>de</strong>senvuelve verda<strong>de</strong>ramente la facultad<strong>de</strong> pensar. Facilítase a<strong>de</strong>más en gran manera, con el estudio <strong>de</strong> la lenguagriega, el <strong>de</strong> otras que pue<strong>de</strong>n adquirirse <strong>de</strong>spués sin mucho esfuerzo; yel joven que posee algunas lenguas no se ve encerrado toda su vida en el

BERGNES 105círculo <strong>de</strong> su propia nación, círculo estrecho siempre, como lo es forzosamentetodo lo exclusivo.El estudio <strong>de</strong> la gramática griega requiere una atención tan intensacomo las matemáticas. La gramática enlaza las i<strong>de</strong>as unas con otras, bienasí como el cálculo enlaza los guarismos; y la lógica gramatical es tan rigurosacomo la <strong>de</strong>l álgebra.Es tan gran<strong>de</strong>, por otra parte, la importancia <strong>de</strong> la lengua griega, quedificilmente pue<strong>de</strong>n prescindir <strong>de</strong> ella los que se <strong>de</strong>dican a las letras, a lasciencias y a la teología. La nomenclatura <strong>de</strong> las ciencias es toda griega,los progresos que están haciendo se expresan con voces tomadas <strong>de</strong>l griego.El médico, el naturalista que no tenga algún conocimiento <strong>de</strong> la lenguagriega tropezará a cada paso, si lee obras mo<strong>de</strong>rnas <strong>de</strong> su facultad enfrancés, inglés o alemán, con voces para él ininteligibles, y que la civilizacióneuropea ha prohijado y sigue prohijando para expresar en una solapalabra, simple o compuesta, conceptos que, en nuestras lenguas vulgareseuropeas, requerirían una perífrasis más o menos larga y fastidiosa. Elteólogo que no esté familiarizado con la lengua griega no pue<strong>de</strong> beber ensiis fuentes las doctrinas <strong>de</strong> los primeros padres <strong>de</strong> la Iglesia, ni el NuevoTestamento en su dicción genuina. El literato que se halle en el mismocaso se ve privado <strong>de</strong>l placer <strong>de</strong> leer en su habla original los <strong>de</strong>chadosque nos legó la Grecia.Pasando ahora a hablar <strong>de</strong>l método que creo más conveniente parafacilitar esta lengua a !os principiantes, <strong>de</strong>bo <strong>de</strong>cir que la experiencia ha<strong>de</strong>mostrado que el que se empeña en enterarse por la gramática <strong>de</strong> todaslas dificulta<strong>de</strong>s <strong>de</strong> la lengua griega pier<strong>de</strong> el tiempo y hace poquísimosprogresos. De ahí que tan pronto como los alumnos se han hecho cargo<strong>de</strong> las <strong>de</strong>clinaciones, y con especialidad <strong>de</strong>l verbo, <strong>de</strong> los comparativos, <strong>de</strong>algunas formas <strong>de</strong>l adjetivo, <strong>de</strong> las preposiciones y <strong>de</strong>l adverbio, partesesencialisimas <strong>de</strong> toda lengua, les hago traducir. Con este ejercicio repasannaturalmente lo que ya aprendieron, y se enteran, por medio <strong>de</strong>l análisis,<strong>de</strong> las formas, <strong>de</strong> los radicales y <strong>de</strong>l mecanismo <strong>de</strong> la lengua. Perotambién hay que ir con muchísimo tiento en la elección <strong>de</strong> autores, parano poner en manos <strong>de</strong> principiantes los que presentan mucha dificultad.La ley general <strong>de</strong> la naturaleza nos está diciendo que todo ha <strong>de</strong> ser gradual,si ha <strong>de</strong> producir fruto. Así es que los ejercicios <strong>de</strong> la versión <strong>de</strong>ben,a mi enten<strong>de</strong>r, reducirse al principio a Esopo, Eliano, Polieno, Luciano,Jenofonte, etc.; or<strong>de</strong>n que sigo en la Crestomatia griega l4 que estoy publicando.De este modo van adquiriendo los alumnos un caudal <strong>de</strong> voces yse familiarizan con las construcciones griegas y la índole <strong>de</strong> las lenguas.Contando ya <strong>de</strong>spués con estos conocimientos preliminares pue<strong>de</strong>n sininconveniente, antes bien con provecho, empren<strong>de</strong>r la versión <strong>de</strong> autoresmás difíciles.
