1 00 JOSÉ ANTONIO CLÚA SERENAEsquematicemos brevemente las principales nociones subrayadasen los Programas <strong>de</strong> 1842 y 1844:a) Importancia <strong>de</strong>l estudio <strong>de</strong> la etimología.b) Manejo indispensable y constante <strong>de</strong>l diccionario.c) Importancia <strong>de</strong> los ejercicios <strong>de</strong> versión, más que las largasdisquisiciones teóricas <strong>de</strong> sintaxis griega.d) Estudio <strong>de</strong> los cambios fonéticos para un perfecto conocimiento<strong>de</strong> la <strong>de</strong>clinación y la conjugación griegas.e) Conjugación: Estudio <strong>de</strong> los paradigmas <strong>de</strong> ~ íw o Aúw, enlugar <strong>de</strong> TÚ~TW.Por otra parte, y entrando en los pormenores <strong>de</strong>l Programa <strong>de</strong>1846, digamos que se abre con una exhortación a interpretar a losclásicos antiguos por cuanto «... ejercita el entendimiento)), ((nutre<strong>de</strong> altos pensamientos)) y «fija la atención en el mecanismo <strong>de</strong> lalengua)) (cf. infra). Asimismo, es sugerente y digna <strong>de</strong> consi<strong>de</strong>raciónla utilidad que Bergnes ve en el estudio <strong>de</strong> la lengua griegacomo ((gimnástica para el entendimiento)).Más a<strong>de</strong>lante, Bergnes se a<strong>de</strong>ntra en una comparación muyacertada (y en ocasiones olvidada o menospreciada): la <strong>de</strong>l estudiorespectivo <strong>de</strong> las gramáticas griegas y el <strong>de</strong> las matemáticas. Paranuestro humanista la lógica gramatical es tan rigurosa como el á1-gebra, la gramática enlaza las i<strong>de</strong>as unas con otras, como el calculoenlaza los guarismos o números. Con ello se enfatiza, <strong>de</strong> hecho,que el estudio <strong>de</strong> la gramática griega adiestra en los elementosesenciales <strong>de</strong>l método científico, como son la comparación, la analogía,la observación, la generalización, etc.Curiosa es también la afirmación apologética, según la cual laimportancia <strong>de</strong> la lengua griega estriba en las voces que proporciona(neologismos) a las lenguas mo<strong>de</strong>rnas y a las ciencias, evitando,así, las largas y fastidiosas perífrasis a las que recurren confrecuencia quienes <strong>de</strong>sconocen aquella lengua.Por lo que respecta al método propugnado por Bergnes para elestudio y aprendizaje <strong>de</strong> la lengua griega, conviene <strong>de</strong>stacar cuatroi<strong>de</strong>as centrales que hemos sistematizado <strong>de</strong>l modo siguiente:1. «La rapi<strong>de</strong>z para introducir al alumnado en el ejercicio <strong>de</strong>la traducción)), cornrnunis opinio <strong>de</strong> la época en la que le tocó vivira nuestro helenista, por lo que pue<strong>de</strong> colegirse <strong>de</strong> la comparaciónentre el Método-Programa <strong>de</strong> Bergnes y el Método <strong>de</strong> enseñar las

Bergnes: «Tan pronto como los alumnos se han hecho cargo<strong>de</strong> las <strong>de</strong>clinaciones, y con especialidad <strong>de</strong>l verbo, <strong>de</strong> los comparativos,<strong>de</strong> algunas formas <strong>de</strong>l adjetivo, <strong>de</strong> las preposiciones y<strong>de</strong>l adverbio, partes esencialísimas en toda lengua, los hago traducir.Con este ejercicio repasan naturalmente lo que ya aprendieron,y se enteran, por medio <strong>de</strong>l análisis, <strong>de</strong> las formas, <strong>de</strong> los radicalesy <strong>de</strong>l mecanismo <strong>de</strong> la lengua».José Carbonell: ((Cuando los principiantes se hallen conscientesen la lectura, han <strong>de</strong> tomar <strong>de</strong> memoria las <strong>de</strong>clinaciones yconjugaciones regulares e irregulares, los adverbios, preposiciones,conjunciones e interjecciones lo más aprisa que puedan; <strong>de</strong> modoque lo sepan todo junto <strong>de</strong> carretilla; y luego sin dar lugar <strong>de</strong> enfriarselas especies, echarse a traducir, pero con todo el rigor <strong>de</strong> laconstrucción, que en las escuelas llaman régimen...)).2. ((Seguir la Ley <strong>de</strong> la Naturaleza)) (Todo gradual, si ha <strong>de</strong>producir fruto) a la hora <strong>de</strong> avanzar progresivamente en el aprendizaje<strong>de</strong>l griego, y más concretamente en la elección <strong>de</strong> autores.A. Bergnes es autor <strong>de</strong> una Crestomatía griega4 <strong>de</strong> la que añosmás tar<strong>de</strong> Luis Segalá5 hablaría con encomio. En dicha obra,Bergnes, con gran tiento pedagógico, reducía a Esopo, Eliano, Polieno,Luciano, Jenofonte ... los autores escogidos para las versiones.De nuevo pue<strong>de</strong> ser <strong>de</strong> gran utilidad la comparación con otrasopiniones <strong>de</strong> helenistas <strong>de</strong>l XVIII sobre los autores a escoger. Nótese,con todo, la gran carga religiosa que pendía sobre los humanistasilustrados, al incluir entre las obras a estudiar el NuevoTestamento. No creemos baladí el recordar que A. Bergnes fuerector <strong>de</strong> la Universidad <strong>de</strong> Barcelona durante el Sexenio Liberalespañol (1868-1874), elegido por su carácter mo<strong>de</strong>rado y armonizador<strong>de</strong> ten<strong>de</strong>ncias. A<strong>de</strong>más, perteneció a la Milicia Nacional duranteel Trienio Constitucional <strong>de</strong> 1820-1823, simpatizó con los' Cf.
