I am excited about the opportunityfor new challenges, changes, and celebrationsfor our students and staff.We are opening two campuses in thenortheastern section of the district. Vernonand Kathy Lewis Middle School andRayford Intermediate will open this yearto relieve crowding and address futuregrowth in the areas of Teague MiddleSchool and Parker Intermediate School.Later this fall, we will celebrate with thecommunity at special dedication events.The board has named the first new highschool to open in Aldine since 1978.In keeping with the Aldine tradition ofnaming our high schools after generals,our new high school is named afterGeneral Benjamin Oliver Davis, Jr. aWorld War II aviator and commandinggeneral of the famous Tuskegee Airmen.The new high school will open in 2012and is located on Ella Blvd. In October,the district will host a reception for theAirmen, members of General Davis’ familyand the community to celebrate thenew school.Funding continues to be a challenge.Last spring, the district hosted numerouscommunity and school meetingsto share financial challenges with ourparents and community partners. Thedistrict saved approximately $20 milliondollars in program cuts and reducedspending for the 2010-2011 school year.In June, the Board of Trustees voted fora Tax Ratification Election (TRE), whichwill be held August 31st. The Tax RatificationElection is requesting voter approvalfor a 13 cent increase per $100of valuation. For example, the averagehome in Aldine is valued at $92,000.If the measure passes, the increase inproperty tax would be $102.00 per yearor $8.35 per month. A home valued at$50,000 would have an increase in propertytax of $45.00 per year or $3.79 permonth. Early voting began at MOC andselected schools August 16th. The officialelection will be August 31st, andvoting will be held at regular precincts.All of this information is available on thedistrict website.As always our goal is to provide the besteducation possible for our students.Even though Aldine has experiencedsome success with student academics, itis time to increase the rigor at all levelsto ensure that students not only passstate required tests, but pass at highlevels and are then ready for the nextgrade level. Look for information fromyour child’s school about what your sonor daughter should know or be able todo to be ready for the next grade leveland finally College/Career Ready. Afterschool begins, you will receive informationabout what your son or daughterneeds to know and be ready to do at theend of this school year so he/she will beready for the next grade or school level.This will begin with PK. Our goal is toprepare each student to be successfulas he or she moves from grade to grade.Please help us in this effort by ensuringyour child attends school each day readyto learn. Also, make sure that your childdoes his/her homework. On days whenthere is no homework, please encourageyour child to read or review mathinformation such as math facts or sampleproblems. Also, use our web-basedsystem to view your child’s grades, andcommunicate with teachers and campusadministrators when you have questionsor concerns. D.Superintendent of SchoolsTransportation policies set for 2010-11The Aldine ISD Transportation Department continues in its effort to provide a better,more equitable, and more efficient transportation service to its students.Bus stops for traditional and magnetroutes will continue to be on streetcorners where possible. On longerstreets, bus stops will continue tobe placed on corners and middleof the street, respectively. Driverswill communicate to students specificmorning pick-up times at theirrespective bus stops after the firstthree days of school. Once morningpickup times have been communicated,drivers have a 10-minutewindow after the established arrivaltimes. This window is necessarydue to unexpected external factorsincluding, but not limited to,traffic, mechanical problems, roadconditions, weather conditions, etc.Please remember that bus driversdo not provide door-to-door servicefor students who ride traditional ormagnet bus routes.Parents and legal guardians of Prekindergartenand kindergartenstudents will continue to be responsiblefor supervising their childrenas they are picked up in theAM and for receiving his/her child/(children) when dropped off at designatedbus stops in the afternoon.Prekindergarten and kindergartenstudents may be dropped off witholder siblings only if the siblings aresecond graders or older. Otherwise,the student will be returned to his/her respective elementary school.Aldine’s Child NutritionServices Department administersthe federal free/reduced meal program.Both breakfast and lunch are availableto all students. We encourageall students on free, reduced andpaid meal plans to join us for breakfastand lunch each day. Our schoolmeals meet the Dietary Guidelinesfor Healthy Americans and all nationalstandards in addition to theadopted nutritional requirements ofthe Texas Department of Agriculture.Meal applications are available ateach campus and at the Child NutritionServices Office. To apply for freeand reduced-price meals, householdsmust fill out the application and returnit to the school. Applicationsmay be submitted anytime during theschool year. Students should be out at thebus stop 10 minutes earlier thantheir scheduled pick up time. Weask that students be visible. Pleaseremember drivers cannot wait orblow their horns for students whoare late to his/her stop. Routes willrun no earlier than the posted times(see side table) for the first threedays.Pick-up times for magnet schoolsmay vary the first week of school.Bus drivers will communicate withstudents the approximate time theywill be at his/her respective busstop.Students new to the magnet programand students with changes ofaddresses will require a minimum ofthree days to have their routes processedand assigned. Route changeswill be issued to drivers and schoolpersonnel during these three days.Pick-up times are estimated by theHomework PolicyAldine ISD believes homework isa necessary part of each pupil’seducational program.Each student must be expectedto spend some time in additionto scheduled class instruction toachieve satisfactory work. Students who fail to provide documentation as indicated or fail to keep the appointment for the chest x-ray will be excluded from school until therequirement is met. The campaignincreased by four percent the numberof Aldine students who ate ahealthy and nutritious school districtbreakfast that year.To separate fact from fiction, InsideAldine asked Dani Sheffield, executivedirector of child nutrition services,for answers to questions thatstudents, parents and school districtemployees would like to know aboutmeals served in Aldine’s cafeterias.Question: How can parents be assuredthat school cafeteria food issafe and healthy?Answer: All cafeterias follow a mandatoryfederal food safety plan forall food products from receivingto the point of service for the customer,which includes taking andrecording temperatures, performingkitchen sanitation practices and continualstaff training. Also, all food ispurchased according to nutritionalspecifications as required by the U.S.Department of Agriculture.Q: What about donuts and honeybuns?A: We do serve a breakfast donut andbreakfast bun that are produced specificallyfor child nutrition programs.They are fortified with vitamins,minerals, fruit juice and they meeta grain/bread requirement. They arenot the same items sold in convenienceor grocery stores.Q: Who develops the menus for foodserved in school cafeterias and whatguidelines are followed?A: All menus are developed by alicensed and registered dietitian.Guidelines include a U.S. Departmentof Agriculture meal pattern thatis aligned with the Dietary Guidelinesfor Americans and the FoodGuide Pyramid. Menus provide allnecessary nutrients for both breakfastand lunch.Q: We sometimes see French fries onthe menu. Are they actually preparedby frying?A: Frying is not a method of preparationfor any food including Frenchfries. They are baked.Q: Are salads and fruit as available aspizza?A: Salads are available daily throughthe choice of entree salads, sandwichsalads and fresh salad self servebowls. Fresh fruit is offered daily atbreakfast. Fresh and chilled fruit areoffered daily at lunch.Q: What about concerns over fat contentand sodium?A: There is a restriction of 23 gramsof fat for individual food items as perthe Texas Public School NutritionPolicy. Menus are planned for schoolage children who require more fat intheir diet than adults due to physicaldevelopment and activity. At thistime there is not a specific sodiumrestriction, but foods such as cannedvegetables are specified for lower sodiumand we are seeing more companiesproducing products with lesssodium.Q: Anything new in our cafeteriasthis year?A: Breakfast at no cost is availablefor all students daily. We hope ourstudents take advantage becausebreakfast can boost classroom performance.Also, continuing MealpayPlus, an online meal payment systemwhich enables parents to depositmoney into a student’s account,months of age with a boosterdose at 12 to 15 months of age(at least two months after thelast dose), or one dose on orafter 24 months of age.18) Only one dose is required forfor students in Grades 7-8.Documentation: Any immunizationdocument that has beenvalidated by a physician or publichealth personnel is acceptable.The month, day, and year that thevaccine was administered must berecorded.Medical and Religious Exemptions:The school nurse orprogram director of health servicesshould confirm medical and religiousexemptions.Strongly Recommended Vaccines:The DTaP (Tdap or DT),hepatitis A (two doses), varicella(two doses), meningitis, and influenzavaccines may not be requiredfor school attendance in GradesK-12, but they are strongly recommended.DTP and OPV: DTaP is a saferversion of DTP, which is no longerused in the United States. The companyenlisted more than 1,700 local Comcastemployees and their familiesand friends to help.Projects at Bethune included powerwashing, painting, landscaping andconstructing new benches. Las escuelasdisminuirán el hacinamiento en las aulasy abordarán el crecimiento en las zonasde la Escuela Media Teague y la EscuelaIntermedia Parker.Abriremos una nueva escuelasecundaria, la cual se ubicará en laBulevar Ella, en 2012. Es tradición quelas escuelas secundarias lleven nombresde generales de las fuerzas armadas.La nueva secundaria llevará el nombredel General Oliver Benjamin Davis,hijo. Davis sirvió de comandante de losAviadores Tuskegee durante la SegundaGuerra Mundial. En octubre, el AISDserá anfitrión de una recepción paralos Aviadores Tuskegee, miembros dela familia Davis y la comunidad paracelebrar la apertura de la nueva escuela.La financiación de la enseñanza siguesiendo un reto. La pasada primavera,el AISD celebró numerosas reunionescomunitarias e internas para compartirlos retos financieros. Para las calles más largas,las paradas seguirán en las esquinasy a media calle. A tres días lectivosdespués de la fecha de iniciar el curso2010-2011, cada conductor (chofer)le avisará a los alumnos sobrelos tiempos específicos de las llegadasmatutinas (por las mañanas) delautobús a las paradas. Los conductorestienen un lapso de 10 minutosdespués de los tiempos fijados. Estoes necesario debido a inesperadosfactores externos (p.ej. tráfico, losproblemas de mecánica, las condicionesde las carreteras, el estadodel tiempo, etc.). Recalcamos quelos conductores de los recorridostradicionales y magnet no ofrecenservicio a domicilio.Los padres y apoderados de alumnosde prekinder (párvulos) y kíndertienen la responsabilidad devigilar a sus hijos cuando se recojan(mañanas) y dejen (tardes) en susparadas designadas. Al dejar a losalumnos de prekinder y kínder enlas paradas, pueden ser acompañadospor sus hermanos mayores (porlo menos de segundo grado). De locontrario, los alumnos serán regresadosa sus respectivas escuelas primariaso colegios de párvulos.El AISD participa en elPrograma Federal de AlimentaciónGratuita y APrecios Reducidos.Las comidas escolares cumplen conlas leyes federales, normas y regulacionesde las Pautas AlimenticiasPara Estadounidenses e incluso losrequisitos nutritivos del Departamentode Agricultura de Texas.Solicitudes para el Programa Federalde Comidas Escolares Gratuitas y APrecio Reducidos están disponiblesen todas las escuelas y el Departamentode Servicios de AlimentaciónInfantil del AISD. Cada conductorle avisara a los alumnos sobre lostiempos de las llegadas matutinasa sus paradas designadas. Alumnosdeben estar en sus paradas al menos10 minutos antes del tiempo fijado ydeben ser visibles. Los conductoresno pueden esperar ni tocar la bocina(el claxon). Aquellas personas asintomáticas (sin síntomas de una infección activa) pero con resultados positivostendrán que presentar radiografías (rayos x) de tórax normales para descartar la enfermedad. Si la persona padece la tuberculosis activa, tendrá que presentar pruebas de que ha concluidoel tratamiento preventivo para eliminar las bacterias de la tuberculosis y reducir los riesgos de desarrollar la tuberculosis activa en el futuro; o pruebas de su médico de que está siguiendo eltratamiento o confirmación de una cita para una radiografía de tórax. Si los alumnos no presentan documentación o faltan de guardar la cita para la radiografía de tórax, ellos serán excluidos dela escuela por no cumplir con los requisitos. El AISD les recomienda que consulten con su médico para que les aconseje sobre un examen físico que incluya la prueba de la tuberculina.Notas a pie de página1) Dosis administradas cuatro días omenos antes del intervalo mínimo(o cumpleaños) se contabilizaráncomo válidas.2) Cinco dosis de la vacuna antidiftérica,antitetánica (tétanos, trismo)y antipertusis acelular (tos ferina,tos convulsiva o coqueluche) conuna de las dosis administrada alcumplir los cuatro años de edad odespués de cumplirlos; tengan encuenta que cuatro dosis satisfacenel requisito si la cuarta dosis seadministró al cumplir los cuatroaños o después de cumplirlos.3) Tres dosis, incluyendo una dosis alcumplir los cuatro años de edad odespués de cumplirlos.4) Se requiere una dosis de refuerzode la vacuna DTPa solamente sihan transcurrido cinco años de laúltima vacunación (vacuna/dosisconteniendo DTPa). Si existe unaalergia, la vacuna Td es aceptable.6) Cuatro dosis de la vacuna antipoliocon una de las dosis administradaal cumplir los cuatro años de edado después de cumplirlos; tenga encuenta que tres dosis satisfacenel requisito si la tercera dosis se administróal cumplir los cuatro añosde edad o después de cumplirlos.7) Dos dosis de la vacuna combinadaPSR [vacunas antisarampión,antiparotiditis y antirubéola (oantirrubéola)] con la primeradosis administrada al cumplir elprimer año de edad; y un intervalomínimo de 28 días entre la primeray segunda dosis; o una dosis de lavacuna PSR además de una dosisde la vacuna antisarampión. Consulteel programa para introducirprogresivamente las vacunas paraaprender cuando se pondrá envigor el requisito de dos dosis dela vacuna PSR para los alumnos decada grado.8) Dos dosis de la vacuna antihepatitisB para adultos (Recombivax HB®o Engerix-B®) son aceptables paraniños de 11 a 15 años. La dosis yel tipo de vacuna deben ser claramentedocumentados (p.ej. dos 10mcg/1.0 ml de Recombivax HB®).9) Dos dosis administradas al cumplirel primer año o después decumplirlo. Consulte el programapara introducir progresivamentelas vacunas para aprender cuandose pondrá en vigor el requisito dedos dosis para los alumnos de cadagrado.10) Dos dosis con la primera dosisadministrada al cumplir el primeraño de edad o después de cumplirlo.11) Confirmación serológica de lapresencia de inmunidad natural oadquirida a hepatitis B, sarampión,parotiditis, rubéola, o varicela (comúnmenteconocida como pestecristal, payuelas o lechina) o confirmaciónserológica de infección esaceptable en lugar de la vacuna.12) Confirmación serológica de la presenciade inmunidad. También sepuede presentar la historia clínicasi su hijo ha pasado la varicela. Lahistoria clínica debe incluir unadeclaración escrita del médico, laenfermera escolar o del padre oapoderado del niño que contieneuna redacción sobre esto tal comola siguiente: Esto es para comprobarque (nombre del alumno) hapasado la varicela (comúnmenteconocida como peste cristal,payuelas o lechina) el (indique lafecha o fecha aproximada), así queno necesita la vacuna antivaricela.13) Inmunización contra difteria,tétanos, tos ferina (vacuna DTPaDTP, DT o dT) y polio (vacuna VPIo VPO; vacuna antipoliomielítica,antipoliomielitis o antipolio) satisfaránel requisito para los alumnosde Kínder a 12 mo Grado si la últimadosis de cada una fue administradaantes del primero de abril de 2004y dentro del mes de cumplir cuatroaños.14) Cuatro dosis; una dosis debe seradministrada al cumplir los cuatroaños o después. Se requierensolamente tres dosis de las vacunasconteniendo antihepatitis B yHib (p.ej. Comvax®, ActHIB®,PedvaxHIB® o Pentavenlente) sila tercera dosis se administró alcumplir el primer año de edad odespués de cumplirlo.
