ABSTRACT
EPIDEMIOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF EQUINE THEILERIOSIS AND YOUR RELATIONSHIP
WITH THE TICK RHIPICEPHALUS (BOOPHILUS) MICROPLUS IN THE TWO FARMS
LOCATED IN THE SOUTHERN RIO GRANDE DO SUL STATE
The equine theileriosis is considered one of the major parasitic diseases in horses. It`s caused by
infection with Theileria equi, naturally transmitted by ticks. The tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus
is the only found in horses in the region and also cattle parasite. The objective of this study was to compare
the incidence of the disease with the coexistence of cattle and horses with infestation of R. B. microplus.
Used (n = 47) horses located in two different farms. In on this farm, 25 animals without contact with
the cattle and the other farm, 22 animals, also created with direct contact with cattle. During one year,
information was obtained as clinical signs of animals, serology equine. Theileriosis, tick infestation in
these horses and climatic characteristics of the region. The positive sorology for equine theileriosis was
40%, for horses do not contact with cattle and the positive serology was 90.9%, for horses that are in direct
contact. Only found Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus in horses that are in direct contact with cattle.
The importance of ticks in disease transmission its suggested that the horse represents an alternative for the
tick R. B. microplus infestation occurs only when there is direct contact between horses and cattle, but also
evidenced the potential of Rhipicephalus B. microplus in the transmission of T equi in horses.
Key words: Theileria equi, Direct Contact, prevalence.
