En humanos la muerte súbita de los pacientes con enfermedad de Chagas, en ausencia de cualquier síntoma clínico significativo previo, obedece generalmente a fibrilación ventricular que es la causa más frecuente de muerte y afecta al 55-65% de los pacientes (Rassi Jr. et al., 2001). Por lo tanto, las diferencias en parasitemia, daño tisular y mortalidad observada en los ratones aquí infectados, sugiere que la edad puede afectar la efectividad de la respuesta inmune para controlar el daño parásito-dependiente o inmuno-mediado, en órganos específicos. Aunque no hay evidencia concluyente del rol patogénico del parásito y/o de la respuesta autoinmune en la evolución de la enfermedad, el 100% de mortalidad acumulada obtenida en los ratones jóvenes de dos meses de edad, puede obedecer a la inducción de mecanismos adicionales de daño, como aquéllos relacionados con las alteraciones neurológicas asociadas a las arritmias malignas y muerte súbita observada en humanos. Estas alteraciones no ocurrirían en los ratones de mayor edad, como consecuencia de la menor efectividad del sistema inmune que acompaña al envejecimiento. 32 REFERENCIAS 1.
