ResumenKeywordsMeaning Text Theory, lexical functions, semantic labels, collocations, formallexicology, typology of nouns in Spanish, linguistic resources for NLP and ontologies.AbstractLexical functions are a key element in Meaning Text Theory (MTT) and theirformalization of syntagmatic and paradigmatic relations has been successfully appliedto lexicography, machine translation, and text generation. The purpose of the work herepresented is to show the convenience of studying the domain of lexical functions, thatis, the list of lexical units for which each lexical function was created. This concept, coined but not developed in MTT, provides a new working methodology and an easiersolution to some theoretical problems. Each chapter of this dissertation claims that inthe same manner as in a collocation the base imposes some restrictions on thecollocative (especially in support verbs), LFs also impose restrictions on their bases. These restrictions, which I refer to as domain features, can be defined when studyingthe domain of LFs. I have described the domains and defined the domain features ofthose LFs which are the most productive in Spanish: support verbs, fulfilment verbs, phasal verbs and causative verbs. In order to carry out the study, it was necessary to collect a considerable amountof data in Spanish. The principle of lexical inheritance (Mel’čuk and Wanner, 1996)was extended and applied to the domain of LFs in order to obtain examples efficiently. In the research work here presented, the principle of domain inheritance is proposedbased both on the semantic motivation of many collocations and the systematization ofthose lacking motivation. The principle of domain inheritance maintains that thoselexical units sharing a semantic label can inherit their LFs glosses automatically. Inorder to implement and validate the principle of domain inheritance, a database hasbeen designed. This database, known as BADELE.3000, contains 3,300 nouns, whichare the most frequent in the Spanish spoken in Spain. With this database, approximatelyiii
