LCA Catalina Leos RivasTesis DoctoralABSTRACTAccording to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 80% of theworld's population depends on traditional medicine for primary care, likewise thedevelopment of resistance by pathogenic microorganisms encouraged many researchersto look for biological activity in medicinal plants. In this study we have evaluated thebactericidal, fungicidal, amebicide, toxic and cytotoxic activity. We also identifiedpartially the presence of chemical compounds from methanol extracts, previouslydefatted with hexane and chloroform, from Boraginaceae plants´family: Cordiamorelosana, Borago officinalis and Heliotropium amplexicaule. These extracts did notshow antibacterial nor antifungal activity against microorganisms tested by the diffusiondisk technique, these extracts showed amebicide activity against E. histolytica HM1-IMSS under axenic conditions in vitro, being the root extract of H. amplexicaule themost active with a CI 50 of 2 g/ml, this extract also showed less cytotoxicity on normalVero mammalian cells with a CI 50 major to 250 g/ml by testing Cell-Titer Blue; theydid not show bactericidal or fungicidal activity against microorganisms tested by thedisk diffusion technique, all tested plant extracts did not show toxicity by lethality teston Artemia salina. Among the secondary metabolites identified we can highlight thepresence of alkaloids since they were found in all extracts and could be responsible forthe amebicide activity.20
