Research methodology873.1 Justification of the sector, choice of population and <strong>de</strong>scription of the sampleIn or<strong>de</strong>r to analyze the hypothesis, we chose a combination of businesses belonging to asingle sector, with genuine product innovation carried out in Spain (while fully aware of thefact that the sector variable could distort the findings we wanted to analyze), and we focusedthe analysis at the level of new product <strong>de</strong>velopment projects.The sector chosen was the manufacture of electronic materials and equipment, and radio,television and communications equipment and apparatus (Spanish National Classificationof Economic Activities: CNAE, 32). This industrial sector is in the “information technologiesmanufacturing firms” category according to the International Standard Industrial Classificationin its third revision (ISIC Rev.3).This is a more and more globalised industry with extremely high levels of competition, withcompanies needing to <strong>de</strong>velop new products in or<strong>de</strong>r to survive. According to the OECD,this industrial sector belongs to those with a medium to high level of technological intensity.In this respect, the competitiveness of the Spanish electronics and telecommunicationssector is based fundamentally on the efforts of companies in terms of Research, Developmentand Innovation.When selecting companies for inclusion in the population, the database of the Centre forIndustrial Technology Development (CDTI) of the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technologywas consulted. This lists companies who have or have had links with the Center andcan thus be consi<strong>de</strong>red innovators.The next stage was to <strong>de</strong>sign a questionnaire (based on a review of the literature, both theoreticaland empirical), using 5 point Likert scales and groups of questions referring to eachof the variables un<strong>de</strong>r study. This was subjected to evaluation by aca<strong>de</strong>mics and researchersin the field of innovation, as well as by two directors of the project. After the inclusionof the suggested changes, telephone contact was established with some of the technicaldirectors of the companies in the population, who were interested in the study. The questionnairewas directed at the technical directors or R&D managers of the businesses, thepeople most qualified to express an opinion on the questions inclu<strong>de</strong>d.All the questions referred to a new product <strong>de</strong>veloped by the company in Spain and availableon the market. The respon<strong>de</strong>nts had firstly to i<strong>de</strong>ntify the product in questions by nameor reference co<strong>de</strong> and then <strong>de</strong>scribe it in terms of the <strong>de</strong>gree of innovation it representedfor the company and the market. The empirical analysis was carried out on a sample of 43companies in a target population of 126, representing a response rate of 34.13%. This figurefalls within the range found in other Spanish studies, and can thus be consi<strong>de</strong>red suitablefor rigorous statistical analysis, the estimated standard error of the highest population averagebeing around 10%.
