Son incuestionables los atractivos enoturísticos que esta tierra con nombre devino posee. Consciente de ello sabe que,pese a tener la suerte de contar con un consejero de lujo, los resultadosdependen de su trabajo. Así, desde que empezó a pilotar un kart a los7 años, hasta ahora que lidera el campeonato británico de Fórmula 3, haganado prácticamente todos los campeonatos que ha disputado. Sólotiene 17 años pero algún día confía en llegar a la Fórmula 1 y cumplir asíel sueño de todo piloto.¿De qué manera te ha inculcado tu padre Carlos Sainz la pasión porel motor?Simplemente cuando yo era pequeño, veía con él las carreras de F1 en el sofá yrápidamente sentí una gran pasión por el mundo de la Fórmula 1 y empecé a soñarcon ser piloto cuando fuera mayor, por lo tanto fui yo el que a los 10 años le pedíempezar a correr en karts.¿Te supone una responsabilidad añadida ser su hijo?Como todo en la vida tiene sus ventajas y sus inconvenientes, pero al final siemprepienso en la suerte que tengo de tener a un doble campeón del mundo a mi lado encada entrenamiento, en cada carrera, aconsejándome en todo.¿Te da muchos consejos?Sí, de todo tipo, desde la forma de organizarme los test a la mentalidad con la quehay que afrontar cada carrera.¿Qué ilusiones tienes para el futuro?Mi ilusión es continuar aprendiendo en cada entrenamiento y en cada carrera parair subiendo de categorías con el mayor éxito posible para que Red Bull siga confiandoen mí.¿Cómo definirías tu pilotaje?Me considero un piloto frío y con muchísima ilusión por aprender, intentando poneren práctica todo lo que me dicen, aunque es muy pronto para tener un estilo propio.¿Con qué piloto te sientes más identificado y por qué?Sinceramente aun no me siento identificado con nadie, soy muy joven y con muchotiempo para aprender, pero está claro que hay un piloto en el que me fijo e intentoparecerme, ése es Fernando Alonso; es simplemente el mejor en todos los aspectos.¿Puedes compaginar bien los estudios con el automovilismo?Es bastante complicado pero hago un esfuerzo muy grande por llevar los estudiosal día, tengo que estudiar en aviones, trenes, hoteles e incluso en algún circuito,pero sé que es mi obligación y me vendrá muy bien para mi futuro.¿Qué sentiste al conseguir tu primer podium en la European F3 Open?Eran carreras de final de año donde mi única intención era coger experiencia, yllevarme un tercer puesto me hizo una gran ilusión. I asked him, when I was 10-years-old,if I could take up go-karting.Is being Carlos Sainz’s son an added responsibility?Just as all things in life have their advantages and disadvantages, so doesbeing the son of a racing champion although, I must admit that I often thinkhow lucky I am to have a double world champion at my side when I am training,when I am racing, giving me such valuable advice.Does he give you lots of advice?Yes, he gives me great advice on all kinds of things such as how to organisethe tests, how to handle each race.What are your future objectives?My main objective is to learn, from training and racing, how to move up fromcategory to category as successfully as possible so that Red Bull will continueto trust my capabilities.How would describe your driving style?I am a pretty relaxed driver with a passion for learning, somebody that triesto put into practise the advice he receives. He has it all as you can see by his results.How do you train physically and psychologically?I go to the gym as often as I can as I do not have a fixed timetable because ofthe amount of travelling I have to do. When I do go to the gym, I generallytrain for a couple of hours. From a psychological point of view, I try to sleepwell, concentrate on what I am doing and relax before each race.What do you normally do in your free time?I guess whatever a young guy of my age does; hang out with my friends andgirlfriend (if I have one). AIR NOSTRUM’s new aircraft unitsalso provide an increase of 62 to 72 in the number of seats available followingthese new purchase operations. He volado mucho y muy a gusto en avión, pero jamás subiré a unaavioneta, como tampoco probaré el helicóptero. Supongo que no soy el únicoque padece esta especie de aerofobia selectiva y que los expertos ya tendránsus teorías (el tamaño, el ruido…), pero voy a haceruna aportación a la ciencia formulando la mía, quepresumo novedosa. El motivo por el que no me veovolando en avioneta es que no tiene azafatas. Pareceráuna frivolidad, pero lo cierto es que si viajé una yotra vez en los pequeños turbohélices fue porquetenían azafata. Que además me dieran doble raciónde anacardos ayudaba, no lo niego.Las azafatas (lo de auxiliares de vuelo suenaabstracto, como llamar árbitro asistente al juez delínea) y azafatos (ya son suficientes para que la RealAcademia Española vaya a admitir el masculino en su23ª edición) tienen la llave para aplacar la inquietudlógica antes del despegue. Basta la sonrisa con la quedespliegan su rutina para convencer al más nerviosode que volar a 30.000 pies no tiene nada de extraordinario.En mi caso, esta sensación está marcada por miprimera experiencia en las alturas, con nueve años,en un vuelo estudiantil entre Valencia y Londres.Cinco minutos después de despegar estrené la bolsaque acababa de descubrir en el bolsillo del asiento.Para calmar mi ansiedad, una azafata inglesa me cogióde la mano y me llevó a la cabina de pilotos, dondeestuvieron un rato enseñándome para qué sirventantas luces y botones. Una pena que no fuera enel viaje de vuelta, después de un mes de inmersión lingüística, porque habríaentendido algo.Desde ese primer vuelo, mi aprecio por el trabajo de las azafatas fue enaumento, alimentado por otras experiencias de grato recuerdo, como la nocheque un avión hacia Nueva York dio la vuelta en medio del Atlántico por “problemastécnicos”. Al aterrizar en Santiago informaron de que el motivo real había sido unaviso de bomba, y siempre me quedó la duda de si la azafata con la que echamosunas risas a cuenta de la avería participó en el engaño. O aquella chica que en unlargo viaje no recuerdo adónde venía cada dos por tres a su silla plegable situadafrente a mi asiento a contarme su vida de azafata. En otro viaje estudiantil de unaaerolínea extranjera me pidieron que tradujese por el altavoz un mensaje para elalborotado pasaje español. Mientras seguía a la azafata por el pasillo barajaba sicontar a mis compañeros un chiste o anunciar que la compañía invitaba a unascopas. “Diles, por favor, que ocupen sus asientos”, me dijo en inglés la joven, y sequedó expectante, con los ojos muy abiertos y la sonrisa preparada. No fui capazde traicionarla.Anumber of years ago, I was asked if I wanted to fly over the city of Los Angelesin a light aircraft. “No way”, I replied. Are you afraid of flying? “No, I am afraidof light aircraft”, was my reply. I have flown in a lot of aircraft, and very happily,but I will never fly in a light aircraft or a helicopter. I guess I am not the only personin the world to suffer from this type of selective ‘aerophobia’. Even though theexperts will, no doubt, have their own theory (size,noise etc.), I have decided to contribute to sciencewith my own theory which I think is pretty original.The reason I cannot imagine myself flying in a lightaircraft is that there are no airhostesses. This mayseem frivolous, but the truth is if I have ever flown inone of those small turboprop aircraft, it is becausethere are airhostesses. I must admit, getting a doubleration of cashew nuts also helps.The airhostesses, “azafatas” in Spanish, (flightattendants sounds so abstract, a bit like calling linesmenreferee assistants) and stewards, or “azafatos” (the23rd edition of the Royal Academy Dictionary has finallyaccepted the masculine form of azafata), are the onesin charge of soothing the nerves of passengers duringtake-off. I would even say the smile on their face as theygo about their working routine is enough to convincethe most nervous passenger that there really is nothingso extraordinary about flying 30,000 feet above theground.I think I must have been marked by my first flyingexperience as a nine-year-old. It was a student flightbetween Valencia and London. Five minutes after takeoff,I was making use of the bag I found in the seatpocket in front of me. One of the English airhostessessaw me and took my hand, leading me to the cockpitwhere the crew tried to calm me down by explaining the purpose of the different lightsand buttons. It was a shame it was not on my return flight because after spending amonth in England, I might have been able to understand their explanations.Since that first flight, my admiration for the work of the airhostesses hasincreased, nurtured by other amusing experiences such as the night the aircraft I wason turned around halfway across the Atlantic Ocean because of “technical problems”.After landing in Santiago, we were informed that the real reason was a bomb alert. Istill wonder whether the airhostess we had a laugh with about the technical problemswas part of the deception. I also remember the airhostess who, during a long haulflight, sat on the folding seat in front of mine telling me all about her life as anairhostess. I was, during another student airline flight, asked to inform the Spanishpassengers in Spanish to keep the noise down. As I followed the airhostess to themicrophone, I was thinking about whether I should use the opportunity to tell a jokeor inform the passengers the airline was going to offer them free drinks, but whenthe young hostesses whispered, “Tell them to please got back to their seats andremain seated”, wide-eyed and expectant, I knew I could not betray her.42 Aladierno • Junio 2012 June
