Seventy years earlier theCatholic Church was involved in the seminal event of the modern, globalinterfaith movement through its active participation in the World’s Parliamentof Religions, the first gathering of its kind ever. Organized in thecontext of the Columbian Exhibition in Chicago through the initiative ofCharles Carroll Bonney, a Swedenborgian layman, the first Parliament ofReligions in 1893 gathered representatives of the world religions includingthe Catholic Church.
