conciliar fathers. 9 However, the opponents to Nostra Aetate had been dramaticallyreduced from 250 in the second last vote seventeen days earlierto a third of that number on the final day. 10The itinerary followed by this document in the council sessions reflectsthe complexity of the issue it addressed and offers interesting insights. Itsoriginal inclusion in the schema on ecumenism speaks of the Catholic viewof non-Catholics in a model of concentric circles of proximity and separation, first finding common ground with other Christians and later engagingnon-Christians. 11 The posterior inclusion of the document in the schema onthe Church indicates that what was at stake pertained to the core of theChurch’s traditional self-understanding as the recipient, custodian, and administratorof the fullness of God’s revelation. Both locations show that thesubject of Catholic interfaith relations transcends the helpful but inadequatebinary model proposed by Belgian Cardinal Suenens of the Church lookinginward (ad intra) and looking outward (ad extra) as the focal point of thecouncil. 12 The Catholic approach to other religions implies both.It has been argued that Nostra Aetate stands at the heart of the council(au coeur du council). 13 In the larger context of the Church’s relation to themodern world, it meant an official Catholic entry into the global interfaithmovement. But the treatment of world religions in the most global council Christianityhas ever had was not the first time the Catholic Church took partin an interfaith initiative of global proportions. Seventy years earlier theCatholic Church was involved in the seminal event of the modern, globalinterfaith movement through its active participation in the World’s Parliamentof Religions, the first gathering of its kind ever. Organized in thecontext of the Columbian Exhibition in Chicago through the initiative ofCharles Carroll Bonney, a Swedenborgian layman, the first Parliament ofReligions in 1893 gathered representatives of the world religions includingthe Catholic Church. Its chairman, the Presbyterian Reverend John Henry9 It was the decree Inter Mirifica, on the Church and Mass Media, approved with 164 votesagainst it.10 Documentos, 612.11 For examples of the application of a concentric circles model to ecumenical and interfaithrelations, see Carlos Hugo Parra-Pirela, Who is my neighbour?
