Pastor in the shadow of violenceGustavo Gutiérrez as a Public PastoralTheologian in Peru in the 1980s and 1990sOlle Kristenson 1AbstractThis investigation is a study of the role of Gustavo Gutiérrez as a publicpastor in the 1980s and 1990s in Peru. His collaboration with the Limanewspaper La República from the early 1980s gave him a figurative pulpitfrom which he addressed the Peruvian public on specific occasions. Thefundamental question in the investigation is: How did Gutiérrez respond aspastor to the Peruvian public and how did he express his pastoral concern? The study analyses materials that has not been object for previous studies, such as theological essays and articles in newspapers and periodicals. With inspiration from Laclau and Mouffe’s discursive theory, four discourseshave been formulated that are applied on Gutiérrez’ texts. Thesediscourses interact and through this interaction Gutiérrez formulates hispastoral message. For the socio-political analysis two political discourses are used, the radicaland the liberal. The radical political discourse deals with justice forthe poor and liberation from oppression as a condition for peace andharmony in society, which are in focus for the liberal political discourse. With the Catholic theological discourse Gutiérrez sets the socio-politicalanalysis in relation to Catholic doctrine and through the pastoral theologicaldiscourse he gives reason for hope and inspiration to action. As anadvocate for a theology of life, Gutiérrez urges those who read and listento him to break the pattern of death and opt for this theology of life. In hisrole as pastor, Gutiérrez speaks words of comfort and encouragement tobroken hearts and words of admonition and warning to those in powerwho have the capacity to transform society.1 Olle Kristenson has a doctorate in Mission Studies from the Faculty of Theology, UppsalaUniversity. He is a minister in the Church of Sweden and is presently working as Directorfor Ecumenical Theology at Christian Council of Sweden. He worked as missionary from theChurch of Sweden in Peru from 1987 to 1995.350
