Non-denominational Contemporary ChurchThe non-denominational contemporary churches, often defined as “evangelical”church, are one of the growing churches in Japan together with thePentecostal Church. Because these churches do not have juridical personality,it is uncertain how many of these churches exist in Japan. It is said that there are about forty such churches exist in the centraleastern part of Japan. These churches are mainly non-denominational singularchurches with 30-200 members. Within same region, Igreja Evangélica Betel, and Grace Community International Church (or Comunidade da Graça noJapão) are also actively growing. The characteristics of these churches are that they are evangelical, with a contemporary worship style, services of two to three hours duration, energetic pastors, and conservative congregations. In most such churches, several meetings are held in addition to the weekly Sunday service. What is significant about these churches is the inclusiveness createdby the members. Even though they hold services in Portuguese, they alsohave some Peruvian, Bolivian, and Japanese members in the church. Thesechurches also actively try to reach out to Japanese people by offering theservices in Japanese or staffing interpreters during the Portuguese service.4.
