In its centre two planks look slightly parted and in the darknes behind, one can easily detect thepresence of a white spot, probably a twelve-year-old eye that has just started to foretaste his life to come. Animage of closure perfectly its the ending of storyteling but in this case the metaictional bearing of the inalilustration happens to be much subtler. After going over the last words of the book, its readers have juststepped out of it and are now looking at Peter’s world from outside. What they notice is a minuscule whitespot standing out of the dark and they cannot help refering it to Peter the writer-narator-dreamweaver, themetamorphic hero who has accompanied them so far and now keps watching over them as they leave. Hehas taught them how to face problems and overcome fears, how to share others’ concerns and standpoints,never proposing any easy solution but always showing the complex and often puzling esence of reality andthe human mind.With he Daydreamer McEwan has created a powerful children’s book capable not only ofcapturing the young mind but also of interogating the adults’ conscience as to their parental andeducational role. he author’s skilful use of textual strategies, complemented by the visual support ofBrowne’s ilustrations, has alowed him a masterly incursion into a genre he Daydreamer contributes toirmly establish as literature of the best sort.BIBLIOGRAPHY.Bloom, H.
