THE INCASHISTORY, BY PEDRO SARMIENTO DE GAMBOARevista STUDIUM VERITATIS, Año 11, N. 17, 2013 (pp.325-357)Abstract: In this essay we are dealing with La historia Índica (1572) writtenby Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa (1532-1592). What has been emphasizedin different ways is that Sarmiento’s writing is mortgaged to viceroyFrancisco de Toledo’s interest. Sarmiento’s writing is a proof of the thesisthat demonstrates the illegitimacy of the inca power, the legal status andmetaphysics of the conquest and the viceroyalty reform. After the resultof this balance, we wondered about the representation of either the voiceor the indigenous memory in the writing of history. We stressed that thereexists an oral memory interdiction by literate consciousness that seeks todelete or distort the indigenous background by modeling a new history;that which is mediated not by the voice, but by the official political writing. Keywords: Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa, Colonial discourse, representationof the conquest, representation of the oral memory.— 326 —
