Lasacciones y eventos alrededor de la muerte, en especial aquellas relacionadascon el arte, como ceremonias fúnebres, donaciones y testamentos, fueron unmedio para consolidar permanentemente el prestigio alcanzado.Palabras clave: Perú siglo xvi, conquistadores, arte y costumbres funerarias.* Martha Barriga Tello es historiadora del Arte y doctora en Literatura Peruana yLatinoamericana por la UNMSM. Ha realizado viajes de estudio y participado enCongresos invitada por universidades de Europa, Estados Unidos, Argentina y Coreadel Sur. Entre sus publicaciones se encuentra el libro Emilio Harth-Terré, catálogoBio-bibliográfico (Universidad de Lima) y artículos de arte y literatura en revistasespecializadas peruanas y extranjeras. Es miembro de la Hispanic Society of America, dela Korea Foundation y del Instituto Riva-Agüero de la Pontificia Universidad Católicadel Perú. Fue jefe del Departamento Académico de Arte de la UNMSM entre 1986 y2001. Actualmente es Coordinadora de la Maestría en Arte Peruano y Latinoamericanoy miembro del Comité Directivo e investigadora del Instituto de InvestigacionesHumanísticas de la misma universidad. Además, es docente principal de la EscuelaAcadémico Profesional de Arte de la Facultad de Letras y Ciencias Humanas de laUNMSM.— 287 —

La inusitada y no previstatransformación de cualquier soldado en conquistador y noble, abrió el caminoal reconocimiento que para sí y sus pares se vio reflejada en la perpetuaciónen la muerte y en el arte que se le vincula. En el nuevo continente todoslos miembros en la campaña estuvieron organizados por nuevas estructurasderivadas de su participación económica y de responsabilidad o éxito en loshechos.Cuando se fundaron las ciudades obtuvieron preeminencia quienesse distinguieron en las acciones.
