nuclear startup instrumentation; modifications of
pool cooling system; replacement of 400 V rod “B”.
Turbine/generator jobs included: replacement of L.P.
“A” shell; machining and treatment of rotor “A”;
installation of new diaphragms (2); retubing of
condenser (casings 3 and 4); in-service inspections /
erosion – corrosion; power operated valve, motor
and transformer diagnostics; replacement of valve
actuators.

/ RO’99 DATA” table demonstrates how the process
has notably improved over the last few years.
OTHER EVENTS
Two especially relevant events occurred during
the year:
The first was renewal of the plant’s Operating
License for a period of 10 years. This has culminated
an extensive plant safety and reliability review effort,
in which many people from Nuclenor and other
firms have taken part, and I would like to thank them
for their dedication and professionalism. It has also
meant that the institutions involved have placed
their trust in Nuclenor, and we hope not to betray
that trust.
The second event was the announcement by the
Spanish Socialist Party on the verge of the general
elections that it is against nuclear power. In the
event that this party wins the elections, Santa María
Garoña is threatened with closure in the year 2000,
along with José Cabrera NPP. This emergence of
political motivations has caused distractions in the
work climate of affected personnel and will
continue to do so whatever the result of the
forthcoming elections may be.
TRAINING
Just as in previous years, and very particularly the
preceding year, the staff training activities have
continued and have occupied a significant portion
of working hours. General, specific and simulator
training has been provided.

OTROS ACONTECIMIENTOS
En el año se han producido dos
hechos especial relevancia:
El primero de ellos ha sido la renovación
del Permiso de
Explotación de la central por un periodo
de 10 años. Esto ha culminado
un esfuerzo muy notable de revisión
de la seguridad y fiabilidad
de la central en el cual han anticipado
muchas personas de Nuclenor
y de otras empresas a las que quiero
agradecer su dedicación y profesionalidad.

SOCIAL COMMUNICATION
The efforts to communicate and inform on our
activity have continued. During 1999, 457 groups
containing a total of 19,184 people visited the
Information Center. Most of the visitors (65%) were
from educational centers, mostly young people
between the ages of 16-18 years. 52% of the visits
were from the Castilla y Leon region.
A total of 143,220 people have visited the
Information Center since it was opened.
The INFO brochure is still being published; 6
issues have been published, with a total of 85,000
copies.
