According to the SFMTA, the average number of trips per taxi fell by 65% between
January 2012 and August 2014. The DC Taxicab Commission is projecting a 10% drop in
number of taxi rides between 2013 and 2014.
Does this mean that taxi drivers are suffering because of TNCs?
No; more taxi drivers are simply choosing to drive on the Uber platform, keeping 80% of
their fares while setting their own hours. If anything, TNCs have increased the demand
for drivers. Taking one major Uber market for which the necessary data is available as
an example: the total number of trips is on the rise and each of these trips requires a
driver.
In San Diego, to take another example, rides per taxi decreased not because taxi drivers
were getting less work but because they were choosing to work with TNCs and leaving
their old cabs back at the garage.
Taxi drivers are making this same choice in San Francisco: the San Francisco Cab
Drivers Association reported that onethird of its drivers switched to TNCs in a single
12month period.
And it’s not just California: from Seattle to Miami, taxi drivers are switching to work with
TNCs in order to earn more in a safe and flexible working environment.
