capftulo 1 LOS RESIDUOS AGR~COLAS Y su us0 EN LA ALIMENTACI~N DE RUMIANTES afrecho de raps a novillos alimentados con paja de trigo, se logran incrementos de peso del orden de 350 - 400 g/d, comparado con la paja sola, que provoca phrdidas de peso. Como las bacterias ruminales pueden convertir urea en proteina microbial, un porcenta- je importante de la fracci6n proteica de la dieta puede ser reemplazada por urea, la que aportarh el nitr6geno requerido por 10s microorganismos. La urea puede ser aportada sin riesgo de toxicidad, formando parte de bloques alimenticios que ademas contengan carbohidratos solubles y semisolubles asi como minerales. AI aportar urea, carbohidratos y minerales a animales alimentados ya sea con paja de trigo o con praderas naturales secas, se han logrado incrementos entre 15 y 20% en el consumo y ganancias de peso de 417 g/d en el cas0 de novillos y 30 g/d en ovejas (Cuadro 1.16). (1979) 1 I 1.6 RESIDUOS DE CULTIVOS HORTiCOlAS 1.6.1 DlSPONlBlLlDAD ESPACIAL Y TEMPORAL Estos residuos se generan en 10s sectores agricolas relativamente cercanos a 10s centros urbanos. En general estan constituidos ya sea por la planta completa o por parte de ella, dependiendo del tip0 y objetivo del cultivo de que se trate. En estos residuos es posible encontrar hojas, tallos, inflorescencias, frutos y tubhrculos, en distintas proporciones, lo cual hace que su valor nutritivo varie considerablemente. La mayor parte de ellos posee un valor nutritivo elevado ya que la cosecha del product0 se efectlja cuando la planta esta en un estado fenobgico temprano, caracterizado por una alta concentraci6n de nutrientes tanto en las estructuras ahreas como en frutos de desecho. En la Regi6n Metropolitanase concentrael40% del total. Estos cultivos se producen a lo largo de todo el aiio, fluctuando entre 1,5 y hasta 3 cultivares/aRo, Io que genera una gran canttdad de residuos a traves de todo ese period0 (Cuadrol.17). Sin embargo, este sistema obliga a retirarlo inmediatamente a fin de iniciar el cultivo siguiente, lo cual dtficulta su us0 potencial en altmentact6n animal.
