En cas0 contrario, no deberian incluirse en mds de 20-30% de la raci6n. En raciones de crianzalengorda de corderos la inclusi6n de 50% de paja tratada puede reducir en un 40% las ganancias de peso y en un 70% si la paja no es tratada. La decisi6n de incluirlas o no, va a estar dada por el precio de la paja, el costo de transporte, el precio de forrajes alternativos, el costo del tratamiento quimico y el precio del animal a productor. Otro aspect0 importante de destacar cuando se incluyen pajas tratadas en la raci6n, se refiere a la conducta de consumo de 10s animales, 10s que disminuyen la frecuencia de ingestibn, pero tienden aconsumir cantidades mayores durante las 24 horas del dia. Las ganancias de peso van a depender del tipo de paja, del tratamiento aplicado y de 10s demh componentes de la dieta. En novillos en engorda (sobre 350 kilos) 10s resultados tienden a ser mejores que en novillos de menor peso y que estdn alin en crecimiento. Fig. 1.12. Vacas de lecherla consumiendo paja suplementada con bloques alimenticios 1.5.4 ADIC16N DE NUTRIENTES LIMITANTES Las pajas de cultivos, especialmente las de cereales, ademas de presentar digestibilidades bajas, son deficientes en proteina, carbohidratos solubles y minerales, de tal forma que 10s tratamientos quimicos o fisicos no son suficientes por si solos para mejorar su utilizaci6n por parte del rumiante y obtener respuestas productivas importantes. La adici6n de mela- za a pajas de cereales mejora substancialmente el consumo ya que es muy apetecida por el rumiante; sin embargo la digestibilidad y el aprovechamiento de ellas no suben en igual proporci6n ya que siguen siendo deficientes en proteina. Mejores resultados se logran aportando fuentes proteicas, las que, ademas de entregar nitr6geno y energia para la sin- tesis proteica microbial, entregan proteina directamente al animal.
