Summary Background: The control of unwanted hair is a social need of our present. Design: From October 1998 to March 2001, 320 patients have been treated (a consecutive sample), in a private medical institute located in Martínez. 500 treatments in differente anatomical areas (face, chin, inguen, legs, etc.) were done. Objective: The aim of this work is to evaluate the obtained results as well as the adverse effects of the treatment. Previous, during and pos treatment recommendations are included. Methods: An Alexandrite laser (Candela GentleLase) which delivers laser energy at a wavelength of about 755 nm (16-35 J&cm2 range of fluence), with integral skin cooling device, has been used. The treatment consisted in several sessions throughout a year. Results:They were satisfactory. Almost full reduction of density and width or complete disappearance of hair has been observed in 95% of the cases. Women have been treated in larger proportion to men. The associated folliculitis (of chin, beard, inguen) disappeared with the lasre treatment. Considering all the patients who consulted for laser hair removal, those who were treated in the facial area presented a larger proportion of hormonal disorders. The most frequent adverse effect was hyperpigmentation, which is transitory. Conclusions: Alexandrite laser is a safe and effective method for controlling unwanted hair. Successful results are observed even in patients with disorders of endocrine nature. Key words: alexandrite laser, hair removal, hirsutism, folliculitis, adverse effects of the oral mucosa. 246
