L
Estimados pasajeros:
a entrada de un nuevo año es siempre un buen momento para cerrar
etapas, afrontar con renovada ilusión futuros proyectos e incluso fijar
nuevas metas. Es por ello que en este recién estrenado 2008 hemos querido
también nosotros seguir esta filosofía. Y lo hemos hecho, como no podía ser
de otra manera, tratando de adaptar nuestra imagen a los nuevos tiempos.
Las azafatas de AIR NOSTRUM son a día de hoy fiel reflejo de lo que
es y quiere seguir siendo esta aerolínea para ustedes: un referente en
la calidad del servicio que ofrecemos a bordo de nuestros aviones.
Precisamente este es el motivo que nos empujó a plantearnos un
cambio en el vestuario de las azafatas (tanto de tierra como de aire), a
través de la renovación de sus uniformes. Desde que la compañía
inició sus operaciones en 1994 hasta el momento, se habían mantenido
los mismos diseños. Unas prendas que en aquellos primeros tiempos
resultaron innovadoras, tanto por sus atractivos coloridos como por sus
formas.
De aquello ya han pasado trece años y en todo este tiempo la moda
española ha dado un salto cuantitativo y cualitativo, de modo que se ha
colocado en los primeros puestos de la vanguardia europea. Así, en
AIR NOSTRUM quisimos seguir esta estela y lanzar un concurso entre
jóvenes diseñadores valencianos –ya que al fin y al cabo este fue el
lugar donde empezamos a operar–, de entre los cuales saldría el nuevo
uniforme que lucirán nuestras azafatas los próximos años. Aunque
podíamos haber elegido diseñadores de renombre para que realizaran
este trabajo, preferimos dar una oportunidad a los jóvenes talentos. De
hecho, un total de 29 trabajos se presentaron a esta concurso, de los cuales
salieron tres finalistas: “Surcando el cielo” (Rocío Ruiz-Cáceres), “Coffe or Tea?
Lagerf Air” (Alex Vidal Jr.) y “Orión” (Mario Simó Coello de Portugal).
En la gala que se celebró el pasado 13 de diciembre en L’Hemisfèric de la
Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias (reportaje en páginas interiores), Alex
Vidal Jr. se proclamó vencedor. La decisión quedó en manos de un jurado en el
que quisimos dar especial voz y voto al mundo de la moda. Es por ello que
desde estas páginas quiero destacar el trabajo y colaboración desinteresada de
todos ellos, empezando por las responsables de las revistas Vogue, Elle, Telva,
Hola, Tendencias, Hello Valencia y el crítico Carlos García-Calvo: así como de
la presidenta de la Asociación Valenciana Industrial de Pret-à-Porter (PIV),
Dolores Cortés. Aunque sin olvidar, por supuesto, la inestimable ayuda de la
presidenta del jurado, la consellera de Industria, Comercio e Innovación de
la Generalitat Valenciana, Belén Juste; la Secretaria Autonómica de Turismo,
Victoria Palau; junto con algunas personas vinculadas a la aerolínea
(Mª Luisa Aznárez, Mª Eugenia Jiménez de Pablo, Nikola Serratosa y Paz
Ferrer); y los dos pasajeros platino que más a menudo vuelan con la
compañía: la directora del IVAM, Consuelo Ciscar, y Antonio Moset.
A todos ellos, junto con los cerca de 400 invitados que acudieron al evento
–entre los que se encuentran 5 consellers de la Generalitat Valenciana, así
como diversas personalidades del ámbito empresarial, la cultura, la moda
y la sociedad valenciana– y al maestro de ceremonias, Bertín Osborne,
quiero expresarles mi más sincera gratitud por compartir con nosotros un
momento tan especial en la historia de AIR NOSTRUM.
Y es que a finales de este año nuestras azafatas comenzarán a vestir los
nuevos uniformes. Espero que ustedes valoren tan positivamente, como
todos ellos, nuestro esfuerzo por estar al día y ofrecer siempre una
imagen acorde con los nuevos tiempos.

T
he beginning of a new year is always a good time to look towards the future
with renewed hope and new objectives in mind. Please welcome in the New
Year with us with this philosophy in mind. And what better way to start 2008 than
with a brand new image?
I am sure you will agree that AIR NOSTRUM’s flight attendants and ground staff are
the perfect image of what our airline is, and hopes to continue to be, for our
passengers: An inflight service quality reference point. At least, this is what we have
based our decision to renew our flight attendant, and ground staff, uniform on. This
is the first time, following our inauguration in 1994, that the design of our flight
uniforms has been renewed. I would like to add that our original flight uniforms were
considered innovative in their day, not only for their attractive design, but also for
their striking colours.
Nevertheless, that was 13 years ago and Spanish fashion trends have taken a
quantitative and qualitative leap since then, the Spanish fashion industry being
considered to be at the vanguard of European fashion. Following in the wake of this
success, we decided to create a design contest, aimed at young Valencian fashion
designers, for the design of a new flight attendant and ground staff uniform. We could,
of course, have commissioned a well-known designer to carry out this work, but we
preferred to give up-and-coming designers an opportunity. Three finalists were chosen
from the 29 tenders received. These were “Surcando el cielo” (Rocío Ruiz-Caceres),
“Coffee or Tea? Lagerf Air” (Alex Vidal Jr.) and “Orion” (Mario Simo Coello).
A gala took place on 13th December, 2007 in the L’Hemisferic Building in the
Valencia Science & Arts Centre (full report within) at which Alex Vidal Jr. was finally
proclaimed winner thanks to the decision taken by a jury of important fashion
experts. I would like to take this opportunity to thank, on behalf of AIR NOSTRUM,
those involved for their work and selfless contribution, with special thanks going to
the representatives of the Vogue, Elle, Telva, Hola, Tendencias and Hello Valencia
magazines, the fashion critic, Mr. Carlos Garcia-Calvo, and the President of the
Valencian Pret-a-Porter Association (PIV), Ms. Dolores Cortes. I would also like to
thank the inestimable help of the Head of the Jury, the Regional Minister of
Industry, Commerce and Innovation, Ms. Belen Juste, the Regional Secretary of
Tourism, Ms. Victoria Palau, and a number of important personalities related
to Air Nostrum such as Ms. Mª Luisa Aznarez, Ms. Mª Eugenia Jimenez de
Pablo, Ms. Nikola Serratosa and Ms. Paz Ferrer and, finally, AIR NOSTRUM’s
two Platinum passengers, Ms. Consuelo Ciscar, Director of the Valencia
Contemporary Art Museum (IVAM) and Mr. Antonio Moset.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the above-mentioned
collaborators, the approximately 400 guests –that included five Regional
Government ministers and a wide variety of outstanding business, cultural,
fashion and Valencian society personalities– and, of course, the Master
of Ceremonies, Mr. Bertin Osborne, for sharing with us this historical
moment.
Our flight attendants and ground staff will, over the following months,
be dressing their new uniforms. In the meantime, I trust you, and
the rest of our passengers, will value our efforts to innovate with
an image in line with today’s fashion trends.

Bañados por los ríos que les dan nombre, Pisueña, Pas y Miera,
los Valles Pasiegos despliegan a su alrededor todo un muestrario
de naturaleza en estado puro y estampas rurales conformadas por
siglos de tradición.
Bathed by the rivers of the same name, Pisueña, Pas and
Miera, the Pasiegos Valleys are the perfect representation
of nature in its purest form. Magnificent landscapes
and centuries of tradition turn it into one of Spain’s most
beautiful inland destinations.

ituados en pleno corazón de Cantabria, el paisaje verde de los Valles Pasiegos
responde a la perfección al estereotipo más difundido de esta región norteña: valles
verdes y ríos intrincados, pastizales que se pierden tras las lomas de las montañas y pervivencia
de las tradiciones rurales.
Toda esta riqueza de valles y ríos, que actualmente se promociona bajo el eslogan
“El secreto de Cantabria” representa un destino de calidad y tranquilidad en medio de la
naturaleza. Un paisaje singular y sorprendente, con pueblos tranquilos y un excepcional
patrimonio histórico en el que sobresalen cuevas prehistóricas, vestigios del Románico,
palacios barrocos o casonas de arquitectura montañesa.
MIERA, EL VALLE DE LA NATURALEZA
Para empezar a descubrir este secreto, el más oriental de sus ríos, el Miera, baña el que
podríamos bautizar con el nombre de valle de la naturaleza. Caracterizado por su orografía
arisca, guarda en sus zonas altas vestigios del pasado glaciar de la comarca. El sustrato
calizo del terreno ha propiciado el desarrollo de descomunales sistemas subterráneos;
el segundo del país se encuentra bajo sus ásperas garmas, el Alto del Tejuelo, con 77 kilómetros
de galerías.
En la superficie, el paisaje nos regala buenos ejemplares de hayedos, como el de
La Zamina, o bosques de ribera a lo largo de todo el recorrido del río Miera. San Roque,
Merilla o Miera son pueblos que el visitante no puede perderse.

ituated in the heart of Cantabria, in the north of Spain, the green Pasiegos Valleys
represent the type of countryside so often associated with northern Spain: green
valleys and winding rivers, mountain foothills offering rich pasturelands and small
picturesque villages.
These lush valleys with their winding rivers form, at present, part of a promotional
campaign denominated “El secreto de Cantabria” (The Secret of Cantabria), designed
to attract visitors who will not only find unique and surprising landscapes dotted with
ancient villages, but also an exceptional historical patrimony offering spectacular
prehistoric cave paintings, as well as a wide variety of Romanesque monuments,
Baroque style town mansions, splendid farmhouses and small mountain cabins.
MIERA, THE NATURE VALLEY
We would suggest that visitors begin their quest by visiting the Miera River in the
Miera Valley or Nature Valley as it could well be described. The reader may be
interested to hear that its magnificent rocky landscape conserves, to the present day,
the remains of a number of ancient glaciers. At the same time, its calcareous substrate
is responsible for an impressive number of caverns such as the Alto del Tejuelo, Spain’s
second large cavern comprising some 77 kilometres of subterranean tunnels.
Visitors will also find here a number of excellent beech groves such as the Zamina
Beech Grove as well as a variety of riverside woods located along the previously

Como tampoco puede dejar de visitar la Cueva de Sopeña, cuyo interior alberga reproducciones
de las pinturas magdalenienses de la cercana cueva de El Salitre, además de
oseras y la recreación de un campamento de cazadores del Paleolítico.
Bajando por el valle encontramos Liérganes, conjunto histórico-artístico que merece una
parada para ver su puente romano y pasear por sus empedradas calles. Y, finalmente,
terminar la jornada en el balneario de la localidad, famosa antaño por la fabricación de
cañones.
También es recomendable la parada artística que nos ofrece el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo
del Palacio de Elsedo, en Pámanes. Esta construcción del siglo XVIII aloja obras
de artistas tan relevantes en el panorama español como Chillida, Berrocal o Gutiérrez
Solana.
PISUEÑA, ENTRE CABAÑAS, CASONAS Y PALACIOS
De naturaleza mucho más abierta, que se refleja en un carácter más humanizado, el valle
cuenta con un riquísimo patrimonio construido, tanto civil como religioso. Tras el baño de
naturaleza en el Miera, entramos en contacto con la historia.
La primera aproximación nos la da un paseo por las calles de Esles, uno de los mejores
conjuntos arquitectónicos de Cantabria. Sus fincas albergan muchos de los ejemplares
listados en el Catálogo de Árboles Singulares de Cantabria.

Neither should they miss a visit to the Sopeña Cave where they will find
outstanding reproductions of the Magdalene style paintings of the nearby El Salitre
Cave along with bear lairs and a replica of a typical Palaeolithic hunters’ campsite.
Located in the lower part of the valley, stands Lierganes, a historic-artistic group
of buildings offering, amongst other things, a beautiful ancient Roman bridge. Visitors
should not miss a stroll through its cobbled streets or a trip to the local Spa, famous
in ancient times for the production of cannons.
Another place of interest is the magnificent Contemporary Art Museum housed in
the Elsedo Palace in Patanes. This beautiful 18th century building houses works by
famous Spanish artists such as Chillida, Berrocal and Gutierrez Solana amongst
others.
PISUEÑA, TOWN MANSIONS, FARMHOUSES AND MOUNTAIN CABINS
The Pisueña Valley, with its large, open areas, offers visitors a wide variety of
historical civil and religious buildings. We would suggest that following a visit to the
beautiful nature areas of the Miera Valley, visitors take note of the rich historical
patrimony of the Pisueña Valley.
And what better way to start than with a stroll through the streets of Esles, home
of some of Cantabria’s most important historical buildings. On an anecdotic note, we
would mention that many of its beautiful country mansions house ancient trees
featured in the Cantabria Catalogue of Singular Trees.

Abandonando ya el Pisueña, la parada obligada
es el Parque de la Naturaleza de Cabárceno,
un auténtico paraíso faunístico de más
de 750 hectáreas donde conviven en semilibertad
más de mil animales de los cinco continentes.
Finally, we would suggest visitors pay a visit
to the nearby Cabarceno Nature Park, an
authentic animal paradise. Covering an area
of over 750 hectares, it houses over a
thousand animals from all over the world.

Si nos acercamos a Villacarriedo, allí nos aguarda el espectacular Palacio de Soñanes,
una joya del Barroco montañés que convive con las cabañas de los prados altos en las que
hoy todavía los pasiegos hacen la muda con su ganado.
Pero es el Románico el que alcanza mayor esplendor en la comarca. A dicho estilo
pertenece la Colegiata de Santa Cruz de Castañeda (S. XII) que en la Edad Media fue un
próspero enclave muy apreciado por los peregrinos del Camino de Santiago.
Para finalizar, una visita a Nuestra Señora de Valvanuz (Selaya), patrona de los pasiegos,
y donde el 15 de agosto se celebra una gran romería. Enfrente, se encuentra el Museo
Etnográfico y el de las Amas de Cría.
Abandonando ya el Pisueña, la parada obligada es el Parque de la Naturaleza de
Cabárceno, un auténtico paraíso faunístico de más de 750 hectáreas donde conviven en
semilibertad más de mil animales de los cinco continentes.
A visit to Villacarriedo should not be missed. Here visitors will find the spectacular
Soñanes Country Mansion, a highland Baroque style building that coexists with the
mountain cabins used by local herdsmen.
It is the Romanesque period, however, that best represents this area. Worth a
special mention is the 12th century Romanesque style Colligate Church of Santa Cruz
of Castañeda, a prosperous medieval enclave, very popular amongst the pilgrims on
the Way of St. James Pilgrim Route.
Visitors should not leave this area without paying a visit to the Nuestra Señora de
Valvanuz (Selaya), home of the patron saint of the local herdsmen. An important
pilgrimage takes place here each 15th August. In front of this beautiful building,
visitors will find the interesting local Ethnographic and Wet Nurse museums.
Finally, we would suggest visitors pay a visit to the nearby Cabarceno Nature Park,
an authentic animal paradise. Covering an area of over 750 hectares, it houses over
a thousand animals from all over the world.

Si el Miera era naturaleza, y el Pisueña historia, el valle del Pas es una simbiosis de ambas. Sus
paisajes de laderas tapizadas por verdes prados con cabañas techadas de lastras es, quizá, la
mejor metáfora de ello.
If the Miera Valley is nature and the Pisueña Valley history, the Pas Valley is a
symbiosis of both. Its hillside scenery, full of green pastures and flag-stoned roofs,
‘is the proof of this symbiosis.
VALLE DEL PAS
Si el Miera era naturaleza, y el Pisueña historia, el valle del Pas es una simbiosis de
ambas. Sus paisajes de laderas tapizadas por verdes prados con cabañas techadas de
lastras es, quizá, la mejor metáfora de ello.
Fue el primer valle habitado de los tres, al menos por los restos que se conocen,
algunos de hace 120.000 años. Buena muestra de ello se encuentra en el conjunto de
cuevas de El Castillo, en Puente Viesgo. Su visita, inexcusable, nos permitirá contemplar
mamuts, bisontes, ciervas… que los pobladores del Paleolítico Superior plasmaron en las
paredes de El Castillo, Las Monedas o Las Chimenas.
Seguimos avanzando en el espacio y el tiempo porque en el valle del Pas también
tienen cabida espectaculares obras clasicistas, como el Monasterio Soto-Iruz, o de la Edad
Moderna, como el conjunto urbano de Alceda.
THE PAS VALLEY
If the Miera Valley is nature and the Pisueña Valley history, the Pas Valley is a
symbiosis of both. Its hillside scenery, full of green pastures and flag-stoned roofs,
is the proof of this symbiosis.
The Pas Valley was the first of the three valleys to be inhabited according to the
remains found, dating back some 120,000 years, in the El Castillo caves in Puente
Viego. A visit (inexcusable) here offers a view of the mammoths, bison, deer etc.
painted by its prehistoric dwellers on the walls of the El Castillo, Las Monedas and
Las Chimenas caves.
The Pas Valley also houses a number of spectacular classical buildings such as
the Soto-Iruz Monastery or Modern Era urban groups such as those to be found in
Alceda.

Fue el primer valle habitado de los tres, al menos por los restos que se conocen, algunos de hace
120.000 años. Buena muestra de ello se encuentra en el conjunto de cuevas de El Castillo, en
Puente Viesgo.
The Pas Valley was the first of the three valleys to be inhabited according to the
remains found, dating back some 120,000 years, in the El Castillo caves in Puente
‘Viego.
La zona alta del valle, en La Vega y San Pedro del Romeral, los pastizales y las cabañas
muestran el modo de vida de este medio rural. Es cuna de un curioso modo de vida,
que también tiene su reflejo en los otros valles, cuyo mayor exponente es “la muda”.
El pasiego, a lo largo del año, va cambiando su lugar de morada, en un sempiterno
acompañar al ganado en busca de los mejores pastos.
Para terminar, en nuestro camino se levanta el puerto de Estacas de Trueba. En este
lugar, encontraremos uno de los últimos secretos de los valles: la estación y el túnel de La
Engaña que, hasta hace poco, sus 6.976 metros de recorrido le alzaban como el más largo

In La Vega and San Pedro del Romeral, located on the upper part of the valley, the
pasturelands and cabins represent a view of ‘life in the country’. This area is the cradle
of a peculiar way of life that is also evident in the other valleys. We are referring to
what is known as the “muda” (seasonal migration in search of pasture) that takes
place each year in the perpetual search for new pasture areas.
The Estacas de Trueba mountain pass holds one of the Pasiegos Valleys’ last
secrets: the station and tunnel of La Engaña considered, with a length of 6,976
meters, until recently, the longest tunnel in Spain. Both the station and the tunnel
form part of the Cantabrian-Mediterranean train route that was to remain unfinished
with just 50 kilometres to go.

Cuevas de Altamira
(Santillana del Mar)
Tal es la singularidad de este magnífico
lugar, declarado Monumento Nacional en
1924 y Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la
UNESCO en 1985, que muchos investigadores
la consideran la “Capilla Sixtina del
Arte Cuaternario”. Descubiertas en 1879
por Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola, a lo largo
de sus 270 metros se encuentran representados
signos cabalísticos, además de
toros, bisontes, caballos y otros animales.
La figura pintada de mayor tamaño, de 2,25
metros de longitud, es la “Gran Cierva”.
Altamira Caves
(Santillana del Mar)
The singularity of this magnificent
cave, declared a national monument in
1924 and a World Heritage Site by the
UNESCO in 1985, is such that some
investigators consider it the “Sistine
Chapel of Quaternary Art”. Discovered
in 1879 by Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola,
this 270 metre long area contains
paintings of horsemen as well as bulls,
bison, horses and other animals. The
largest painted figure, the “Great Deer”,
is 2.25 metres long.

Situated next to the Menendez
Pelayo Museum, the Fine Arts Museum,
previously known as the Painting Museum,
was founded in 1908. Its well-equipped
rooms house a variety of sculpture,
painting, engraving and photographic
collections. Amongst its most significant
works, we would mention the splendid
“Retrato del Rey Fernando VII” (Portrait
of King Ferdinand VII) by Goya. This
excellent portrait was commissioned by
the Santander Town Hall in 1814.

Este incuestionable tesoro de la geología
mundial constituye un increíble paraíso
subterráneo que sorprende a cada paso

formaciones excéntricas, de las que

of Magdalena
This distinguished building of considerable
dimensions, work of Gonzalez de Riancho,
is situated on the peninsular of the same
name. It comprises, amongst other things,
a picturesque public park and an interesting
mini-zoo.
Its stands out for the beauty of the
paintings by Sorolla, Sotomayor etc.,
the Royal Suites, the Queen’s and Music
halls and the Library. It is, at present, used
as a congress and work centre.

La historia de este paraje, declarado por
la Ley 16/95 de 30 de mayo, es la continuadora
natural del Parque Nacional de
la Montaña de Covadonga, declarado por
Alfonso XIII el 22 de julio de 1918. Posee
una superficie total de 64.660 hectáreas,
repartidas entre Cantabria, Asturias y
Castilla y León, en las cuales habitan
cuantiosas especies protegidas como
quebrantahuesos, urogallos y osos pardos,
sin olvidar lobos ibéricos, rebecos, del
que existen varias esculturas diseminadas
por el parque, gatos monteses, águilas
reales, perdiceras y calzadas, y árboles
como hayas, robles carvallos y rebollos,
encinas y alcornoques.

The magnificent Picos de Europa
National Park, declared a national park on
30th May, 1995, is the natural successor
of the Covadonga Mountain National Park
declared a national park by Alfonso XIII on
22nd July, 1918. Its surface area of 64,660
hectares is divided between the Spanish
regions of Cantabria, Asturias and Castilla
y Leon. It is the home of a number of
protected species such as the bearded
vulture, the Pyrenean capercaillie and the
brown bear as well as the Iberian wolf, the
chamois, existing a number of sculptures
dotted around the area, wild cat, golden
eagle, booted eagle and Bonelli’s eagle and
tree species such as the beech, oak, Turkey
oak, Holm oak and cork tree.

del Mar Cantábrico, del Palacio de

e técnica impecable, pilotaje muy agresivo
y sin concesiones, en la línea del
biketrial, con un estado de forma envidiable
y una moral por las nubes, Bou es un
campeón que se caracteriza por emplearse
siempre a fondo para lograr la victoria, no
siendo amigo de precipitaciones que le
conlleven penalizaciones de puntos y sí de
la constancia y del buen hacer.
¿En qué momento decidiste dedicarte
profesionalmente al mundo del
trial?
Cuando empecé a correr en el Mundial me
di cuenta que si quería hacerlo bien debía
emplearme plenamente al trial. En casa
siempre ha habido una moto de esta modalidad
y en todo momento quise dedicarme
a esta especialidad.
¿Cuáles fueron las principales dificultades
que debiste superar en tus
comienzos?
Las lesiones. Con catorce años tuve una
fractura en la muñeca, y de peroné en mi
segundo año como profesional.
¿Qué sientes y en qué piensas cada
vez que te sientas en tu moto antes
de competir?
Esencialmente procuro disfrutar todo lo que
pueda del momento, intentándolo hacer
todo lo bien que me sea posible.

When did you decide to become a
professional Trial rider?
I realised one day that I would
have to take this sport seriously
if I really wanted to win the World
Championships. I grew up with a trial
bike at home. I always knew that I
wanted to become a professional Trial
rider.
What kind of obstacles did you have
to overcome at the beginning?
My main obstacles were injuries. For
example, I fractured my wrist when I
was 14-years-old and a fibula during
my second year as a professional.
What do you think and feel when you
get on your bike to compete?
I normally think of enjoying myself.
Obviously, I also think of doing my
best to win.
How did it feel to beat Adam Raga,
the world’s top trial rider?
Has logrado vencer a Adam Raga.
¿Cómo se te queda el cuerpo tras
superar al hasta hace poco indiscutible
número uno?
Estoy muy contento, sobre todo porque
considero que Raga es uno de los mejores
pilotos de la historia.
“Desde pequeño ser campeón del
mundo era un sueño que se ha
hecho realidad...”. ¿Qué cualidades
reúnes para haberlo logrado y qué
piensas hacer para defender tu sueño
logrado?
Soy un piloto agresivo, al que le gusta
mucho competir. Pero, por otra parte, soy
plenamente consciente de que resulta más
difícil renovar un título que ganarlo por primera
vez.
¿Cómo es tu pilotaje?
Muy parecido al de biketrial extrapolado a
una moto, y creo que es precisamente aquí
donde radica uno de mis puntos fuertes,
pues soy un piloto que doy muy poco gas.
Has pasado a la historia por ser el
primer campeón mundial de trial
con una máquina de cuatro tiempos.
¿Podrías explicarnos en qué medida
te ha diferenciado este aspecto?
Bueno, la verdad es que generalmente
mi moto va muy bien. Ese aspecto me ha

vas a conducir cualquier tipo de vehículo
y respetar escrupulosamente las normas de
seguridad existentes.
En las pistas superas continuamente

Principalmente el racismo y la discriminación.
¿Qué libro y qué película recomendarías
a nuestros pasajeros?
Uno de los que más me ha agradado y
entretenido ha sido “El Médico”, de Noah
Gordon. Respecto a la película aconsejo
que no se pierdan la saga de “Piratas del
Caribe”.
Además de las motos, ¿tienes otras
aficiones?
Claro que sí. Me gusta mucho el fútbol, en
especial el Barça, y salir con los amigos.
Vuelas frecuentemente con Iberia
Regional AIR NOSTRUM. ¿Qué aspectos
destacarías de la compañía?
Acostumbro a volar mucho con vosotros,
y puestos a destacar alguna faceta de
Iberia Regional AIR NOSTRUM una de las
que más me agradan es la enorme calidad
humana que tienen todos trabajadores de
la aerolínea.

yourself having to do this in everyday

obstacle you have had to overcome?
No, I face a lot less difficulties in my
everyday life. My main problem is with
the opposite sex, ha ha!
What things worry you most about
society today?
One is the violence against women. I
think that men who ill treat women
should be severely punished.
What do you most detest in society?
Racism and discrimination amongst
other things.
What book or film would you
recommend our passengers?
”The Physician” by Noah Gordon is one
of the most entertaining books I have
read. I would also recommend the
“Pirates of the Caribbean” film saga.
Apart from motorcycling, do you have
any other hobbies?
Of course. I like football, especially
Barcelona FC, and going out with my
friends.
As a frequent flyer with Iberia Regional
AIR NOSTRUM, what do you like best
about our airline?
Yes, I use your airline a lot and one of
the things I like best is the friendly
attitude of the airline staff.

VITORIA-GASTEIZ: LIGADA A LA CULTURA Y AL ARTE
En esta capital resulta imposible que el aburrimiento haga mella en el espíritu de
quienes paseen por sus calles. Así, deambulando por el casco urbano salen al paso de los
viandantes espectaculares edificaciones como los espacios catedralicios de Santa María y
el de la Inmaculada Concepción, denominados respectivamente Catedral Vieja y Nueva.
La primera, fechada en el siglo XIV, sobresale por sus elaboradas estatuas y relieves que
decoran las tres portadas que se abren bajo su pórtico, por su imaginería gótica, flamenca
y renacentista, o por sus pinturas firmadas por Rubens y van Dyck.
La segunda, la Nueva, de estilo neogótico, está dedicada a la Inmaculada Concepción y
se encuentra en la céntrica y comercial barriada de Lovaina, sede de la Diputación Foral
alavesa, de la Hacienda Foral y de los Juzgados.
Las iglesias de San Vicente Mártir, San Miguel Arcángel y de San Pedro Apóstol pueden
completar este itinerario religioso que aconsejamos combinen con una visita a cualquiera

VITORIA-GASTEIZ: CULTURAL AND ARTISTIC
A stroll through the beautiful streets of Victoria-Gasteiz guarantee visitors hours
of entertainment. Its numerous historical buildings include the spectacular Santa
Maria and Inmaculada Concepcion cathedrals known popularly as the Old and New
Cathedral respectively. The first of these magnificent buildings, dating back to the
14th century, stands out for the ornate statues and embossments of the three
portals located under its portico, its Gothic, Flemish and Renaissance style imagery
and a number of masterpieces by Rubens and van Dyck.
The Neogothic style New Cathedral is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception
and can be located in the central and commercial Lovaina District, home of the
city’s Diputacion Foral Alavesa, the Hacienda Foral and Juzgados buildings.
The San Vicente Martir, San Miguel Arcangel and the San Pedro Apostol
churches complete this list of outstanding religious buildings worth visiting.

Naipes, cuyas salas exhiben más de 6.000 barajas de distintos países y temáticas fechadas
entre los siglos XV al XX, situado en el Palacio de Bendaña, éste último rivalizando en
hermosura con espacios palaciegos como los de Escoriaza-Esquivel, del siglo XV, el de
Villa Suso, donde vivió el embajador de Carlos V Martín de Salinas, o el de Ajuria Enea,
sede desde 1980 del Gobierno Vasco y residencia oficial del Lehendakari.
Otros lugares emblemáticos son la Casa del Cordón, en la calle Cuchillería, donde se
alojaron los Reyes Católicos y en la que el Pontífice Adriano VI recibió la noticia de su
nombramiento, o el moderno Centro-Museo Vasco de Arte Contemporáneo “ARTIUM”,
cuya colección artística española y vasca desde principios del siglo pasado hasta nuestros

Casi con total seguridad que la primera imagen que se nos viene a la mente cuando
pensamos en la capital guipuzcoana sea la de la preciosa y célebre Bahía de La Concha,
por cuyo paseo, recorrido por una elaborada barandilla blanca, resulta una delicia caminar.
Pero si por algo despunta San Sebastián es por el apacible y distinguido ambiente que
se respira en toda la metrópoli, elegancia que impregna algunas de sus construcciones
más representativas, como es el caso del Ayuntamiento y antiguo Casino; del Palacio de
Miramar; del puente de María Cristina, uno de los más bonitos de los muchos que cruzan
sobre el río Urumea, arteria fluvial que atraviesa la localidad; del Centro Cultural Koldo
Mitxelena; del Palacio de Congresos y Auditorio Kursaal, obra de Rafael Moneo, sede
principal desde 1999, año de su inauguración, del prestigioso Festival Internacional de
Cine de San Sebastián; del refinado Teatro Victoria Eugenia; de la Basílica de Santa María,
del siglo XVIII, o de la neogótica Catedral del Buen Pastor, creada por arquitecto local

A number of interesting museums can also be found here such as the unique
Fournier de Naipes Museum housing over 6,000 sets of playing cards from all
over the world that cover the period from the the 15th to 20th century. This unusual
museum is housed in the beautiful Bendaña Palace, rivalling in beauty with the
Escoriaza-Esquivel Palace dating back to the 15th century, the Villa Suso, private
residence of the Ambassador of King Charles V, Martin de Salinas, and the Ajuria
Enea, headquarters since 1980 of the Basque Government and official residence of
the Lehendakari (Head of the Basque Government).
Other emblematic buildings include the Casa del Cordon in Cuchilleria Street,
once used to accommodate the Catholic Kings and in which Pope Adrian VI
received the news of his nomination as pope.
SAN SEBASTIÁN: TRANQUIL AND ELEGANT
For those familiar with San Sebastian, the first image to come to mind when
imagining this beautiful city is, without a doubt, its famous La Concha (Shell) Bay
and famous white iron-railed sea parade, perfect for a relaxing stroll.
If, however, there is something that truly characterises San Sebastian, it is its
peaceful, distinguished atmosphere and the elegance of enigmatic buildings such
as the Town Hall and the old Casino Building or the Miramar Palace, the Maria
Cristina Bridge, one of the most beautiful of the many bridges that cross the River
Urumea, the fluvial artery crossing this impressive city, the Koldo Mitxelena Cultural
Centre, the Kursaal Congress Centre and Auditorium, designed by the famous
Spanish architect, Rafael Moneo, headquarters, since it was inaugurated in 1999,
of the prestigious International Film Festival of San Sebastian, or the refined Victoria
Eugenia Theatre, the Basilica of Santa Maria, dating back to the 18th century, or the
Neogothic style Cathedral of the Buen Pastor by the local architect, Manuel de
Echave. We would also mention the splendid Alderdi Eder Gardens, situated in
front of the Town Hall, covering a surface area of 6,500 square metres and, finally,
the “Peine del Viento” sculpture by the famous sculptor, Eduardo Chillida,
considered one of San Sebastian’s most emblematic symbols.

BILBAO: BRINGING BACK THE SHINE

BILBAO: RECUPERANDO SU LUZ
Fundada mediante una carta puebla, que data del 15 de junio de 1300, por el Señor de
Vizcaya, don Diego López V de Haro, la villa de Bilbao lleva a sus espaldas una fama de
ciudad industrializada, triste y gris que ya no se corresponde exactamente con la realidad.
Así, el entorno de su Ría se ha transformado en un sitio de ocio y disfrute totalmente
renovado en el que se dan cita las espléndidas zonas verdes en Abandoibarra, el Palacio
Euskalduna, el puente homónimo y el de Zubizuri, o pasarela de Calatrava, la pasarela
Padre Arrupe, el tranvía o las torres gemelas Isozaki Atea.
Pero si hay una joya cuya silueta deslumbra sobre las aguas de la histórica Ría bilbaína
es el Museo Guggenheim Bilbao, del arquitecto americano Frank O. Gehry, auténtico
ejemplo de la arquitectura vanguardista del siglo XX, que actúa como un sugerente telón
de fondo para la exhibición de espectaculares muestras de arte contemporáneo.

has, since then, been transformed into a modern leisure centre housing the
Abandoibarra Park, the Euskalduna Palace, the bridge of the same name and the
Zubizuri, the Calatrava and Padre Arrupe footbridges, the tram and the Isozaki Atea

One of the most modern silhouettes on this historical estuary, is, however, the
spectacular Guggenheim Museum designed by the famous North American
architect, Fran O’Gehry, a brilliant example of 20th century vanguard architecture.

Otros lugares de interés son la gótica Basílica de Begoña, erigida por Sancho Martínez
de Arego, sobre donde se apareció la Virgen, la muy venerada “Amatxo”, a principios del
XVI; la Catedral de Santiago, que toma su nombre del patrón de Bilbao, el apóstol Santiago
el Mayor, iniciada a finales del siglo XIV; el Teatro Arriaga, considerado desde su apertura
plaza “de primera”, asegurando por ello el paso por Bilbao de los principales actores y
compañías del panorama teatral nacional, y el Museo de Bellas Artes singular, además de
por haber surgido gracias al patrocinio de coleccionistas locales y por el largo período que
comprende, a partir del siglo XII a nuestros días, por algunas de las piezas que contiene,
como es el caso de, entre otras, “Lamentación sobre Cristo muerto”, de van Dyck,

UNA GASTRONOMÍA DE ESAS DE CHUPARSE LOS DEDOS
Otro aspecto que resulta imposible que pase desapercibido en cualquiera de las capitales
vascas es la infinidad de bares y tascas que poseen, gran parte de ellos agrupados en los
respectivos Cascos Viejos.
Llegados a este extremo les recomendamos que se dejen arrastrar, además de por las
consabidas recetas de toda la vida o por las más recientes nacidas de la denominada Nueva
Cocina Vasca o “Euskal Sukaldaritza Berria”, por la costumbre de “potear”, o lo que es lo
mismo, la tradición de seguir con un grupo de amigos una ruta predeterminada de locales,
en cada uno de los cuales se saborean los correspondientes “pintxos”, apetitosas miniaturas
culinarias que han sido capaces de elevar a las tradicionales tapas a la categoría de arte. Y
claro, tantos “bocaditos” nada mejor que acompañarlos bebiendo, siempre con mesura,
“txikitos” o “zuritos”, pequeñas dosis de vino o cerveza, respectivamente.
Después de recobrar fuerzas, las tres capitales vascas ofrecen para los más noctámbulos
un amplio abanico de pubs y discotecas donde poder bailar, conversar y tomar una copa
hasta bien entrada la noche.
Como vemos, el País Vasco ofrece a sus visitantes un abanico de posibilidades prácticamente
inagotables, característica que lo ha convertido en uno de los destinos turísticos
más relevantes e interesantes de España.

MOUTH-WATERING ASTRONOMY
Another aspect difficult to ignore in the Pais Vasco is the existence of its
picturesque bars and inns, large numbers of which can be found grouped together
in the city monumental centres.
At this point, we would suggest that visitors definitely let themselves be seduced
by the local cuisine. The Pais Vasco not only stands out for its magnificent
traditional specialities, but also for what is known today as the “Nueva Cocina
Vasca” (Cuisine Nouveau) or “Euskal Sukaldaritza Bderria”. We are sure that visitors
will also find the local custom, to “potear”, also very entertaining. We are referring
to the practice of visiting a number of local bars with a group of friends in order to
eat “pintxos” (small hot and cold snacks), authentic miniature culinary specialities,
accompanied by small glasses, known as “txikitos” and “zuritos”, of wine or beer
respectively.
Finally, we would mention that all three capitals offer night-lovers an outstanding
variety of fashionable pubs and discotheques where they will be able to drink and
dance to their heart’s content.
There is no doubt about it, the Pais Vasco not only offers visitors a marvellous
variety of tourist sights but also excellent entertainment, elements that have turned
it into one of today’s most important Spanish tourist destinations.

observarse la evolución histórica de los naipes

ópera “La Gioconda”, de Amilcare Ponchielli,
el espléndido Teatro Arriaga fue pasto de
las llamas la noche del 22 de diciembre
de 1914, siendo reconstruido por Federico
de Ugalde, arquitecto que lo dotó de mayor
amplitud y seguridad. Reinaugurado en
junio de 1919 con la ópera “Don Carlo”, de
Giuseppe Verdi, desde su apertura fue considerado
plaza “de primera”, aspecto que ha
motivado que por su escenario pasen los
principales actores, espectáculos y compañías
del panorama teatral español de cada
momento, contando incluso con estrenos

Las más de 700 azafatas que componen la plantilla de AIR NOSTRUM estrenarán
uniforme este año. Alex Vidal Jr, con su trabajo “Coffe or Tea? Lagerf Air”, se
proclamó vencedor del concurso de jóvenes diseñadores convocado por la
aerolínea, la Conselleria de Industria, Comercio e Innovación de la Generalitat
Valenciana y la Asociación Valenciana Industrial de Pret-à-Porter (PIV), durante
la cena de gala que se celebró el pasado 13 de diciembre en L’Hemisfèric de la
Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias de Valencia. Al evento asistieron 400 invitados.

ado que el objetivo era renovar la imagen y el diseño del uniforme que a diario visten
las azafatas, la aerolínea optó por dar voz y voto preferencial al mundo de la moda.
Entre los 17 miembros del jurado presidido por la Consellera de Industria, Comercio e
Innovación de la Generalitat Valenciana, Belén Juste, tuvieron especial peso expertos de
las revistas Hola, Vogue, Elle, Telva, Tendencias, Hello Valencia y el crítico Carlos García-
Calvo. También formaron parte del mismo la presidenta de la Asociación Valenciana
Industrial de Pret-à-Porter (PIV), Dolores Cortés, y la Secretaria Autonómica de Turismo,
Victoria Palau; junto con algunas personas vinculadas a la aerolínea como es el caso de
Mª Luisa Aznárez, Nikola Serratosa, Mª Eugenia Jiménez de Pablo y Paz Ferrer.
En el jurado estuvieron representados, además, los pasajeros de la compañía. Y fue de
la mano de los dos que más vuelan con AIR NOSTRUM: la directora del IVAM, Consuelo
Ciscar, y Antonio Moset; acompañados del notario, Carlos Pascual, y un abogado encargados
de supervisar todo el proceso.
Al concurso de jóvenes diseñadores se presentaron un total de 29 propuestas. En la fase
preliminar, un jurado compuesto de manera mayoritaria por personal de la compañía, y
presidido por Dolores Cortés, seleccionó a los tres finalistas de entre los que, en la gala,
se eligió al ganador.

ince the object of this contest was the renewal of the uniform used by the AIR
NOSTRUM flight attendants and female ground staff, the airline decided to give
priority to a group of fashion experts. Amongst the 17 members of the jury headed
by the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Innovation of the Generalitat Valenciana,
Ms. Belen Juste, were representatives of the Hola, Vogue, Elle, Telva, Tendencias
and Hello Valencia magazines and the fashion critic, Mr. Carlos Garcia-Calvo.
Other members included the President of the Industrial Prêt-a-Porter Association
of Valencia (PIV), Ms. Dolores Cortes, and the Regional Secretary of Tourism,
Ms. Victoria Palau and personalities related to AIR NOSTRUM such as Ms. Mª Luisa
Aznarez, Ms. Nikola Serratosa, Ms. Mª Eugenia Jimenez de Pablo and Ms. Paz Ferrer.
The AIR NOSTRUM passengers were represented by two of its best customers,
the Director of the Valencia Contemporary Art Museum, Ms. Consuelo Ciscar, and
Mr. Antonio Moset who were accompanied by the Notary, Mr. Carlos Pascual, and
a lawyer, the two latter being charged with supervising this important event.
A total of 29 up-and-coming designers participated in the Uniform Design
Contest. A preliminary jury, made up mainly of AIR NOSTRUM airline members,
presided by Ms. Dolores Cortes, chose the three finalists.

NOSTRUM, recordó la trascendencia de este evento como “acto festivo para celebrar el
cambio de imagen de las azafatas de vuelo y el personal femenino de atención en tierra
de AIR NOSTRUM después de trece años de actividad”. Además, subrayó la idea de
homenajear “a nuestras más de 700 azafatas, ya que ellas han sido piezas fundamentales

the flight attendants and female ground staff of AIR NOSTRUM”. He also mentioned

sociedad valenciana “a través de un concurso para jóvenes diseñadores al que se han
presentado cerca de treinta candidatos”.
Finalmente se dio a conocer el nombre del ganador, Alex Vidal Jr., que fue premiado
con 13.000 euros en metálico más 22.000 euros en billetes de avión a utilizar en la red de
AIR NOSTRUM por él y dos beneficiarios. Además participará en la Semana de la Moda de
Valencia inaugurando el desfile de la sección “Jóvenes Diseñadores”. Rocío Ruiz-Cáceres
fue la semifinalista y recibió, al igual que Mario Simó Coello de Portugal (tercer
clasificado), 3.000 euros en metálico y 2.000 euros en billetes de avión. Por su parte,
Asociación Valenciana Industrial de Pret-à-Porter (PIV), otorgó a este último una
nominación al mejor diseño realizado por un estudiante consistente en 1.000 euros en
metálico + 2.000 en billetes de avión.
A través de esta iniciativa AIR NOSTRUM ha querido aprovechar la oportunidad
planteada en la renovación de la imagen de sus azafatas, para dar un impulso al trabajo de
los jóvenes diseñadores valencianos. En este sentido, es la primera vez que una aerolínea
lanza el reto de convocar un concurso de estas características para elegir nuevo uniforme.
De hecho, para el primero de ellos y ganador del concurso, será una oportunidad única
para dar a conocer su trabajo en los más de 60 destinos que la aerolínea ofrece en la
actualidad, con ocho países de Europa y Norte de África.
Más de un centenar de azafatas de vuelo y tierra de la compañía han participado, de uno
u otro modo, en todo el proceso. Ellas han sido, y lo son, las protagonistas.
Mr. Serratosa also underlined the participation of the Valencian society as a whole
“thanks to the introduction of a design contest for up-and-coming designers that
had attracted nearly thirty candidates”.
The winner was finally announced as Alex Vida Jr. who received a 13,000 euro
cash prize and 22,000 euros in AIR NOSTRUM airline tickets for himself and two
companions and the opportunity of participating in the Valencia Fashion Week,
inaugurating the “Young Designers” Fashion Parade. Rocio Ruiz-Caceres was the
runner-up and received, along with Mario Simo Coello de Portugal (who came third),
a 3,000 euro cash prize and 2,000 euros in AIR NOSTRUM airline tickets. Mario
Simo Coello de Portugal was, at the same time, nominated by the Industrial Prêta-Porter
Association of Valencia (PIV) for the Best Student Design for which he
received a cash prize of 1,000 euros and 2,000 euros in airline tickets.
Air Nostrum took this opportunity to promote the work of the Comunidad
Valenciana’s up-and-coming fashion designers. It was the first time the Airline had
taken on the challenge of organising a contest of these characteristics. The winner
of this exceptional contest has, amongst other things, been given the unique
opportunity of promoting his work in the approximately 60 destinations AIR
NOSTRUM operates, at present, in 8 European and North African countries.
Over 100 AIR NOSTRUM flight attendants and female ground staff participated,
one way or another, in this project. They were, and are, the protagonists of this
story.

a contar con una nueva y mejorada generación. Se trata del Cherokee, una de las
principales referencias de un mercado en el que Jeep sigue teniendo voz propia. Ofrecido
en las tradicionales versiones Sport y Limited, la gama Cherokee mantiene su estética
inspirada en la tradición de una marca con más de sesenta y cinco años de experiencia en
el mundo del todo terreno. Una imagen que al igual que el resto de la gama, se ha visto
ligeramente remodelada con un frontal cien por cien Jeep, que agrupa la parrilla y los faros
en una sola unidad, pero también los pasos de rueda trapezoidales y la fuerte presencia de
líneas rectas en toda la carrocería.
Un ligero toque “retro” que se combina a la perfección con las últimas soluciones
estilísticas y de confort, como son los tan de moda techos panorámicos. Esta versión
también propone al conductor de manera opcional la experiencia de la conducción a
cielo abierto, gracias a su sistema “Sky Slider” de techo retráctil de plena apertura.
Confeccionado en lona acrílica reforzada, similar a las capotas de los cabrio tradicionales,
este techo puede accionarse eléctricamente de delante a atrás, dejando al descubierto
ambas filas de asientos, o de atrás a adelante para descubrir sólo las plazas traseras.
DOS MOTORIZACIONES
En un principio, la oferta Cherokee va a estar disponible en dos únicas variantes
mecánicas. Fiel a su origen, la versión más potente es la de gasolina V6 de 3.7 litros de
cilindrada, y 205 CV de potencia. Una planta motriz que destaca por sus prestaciones y
que tan sólo se sirve acoplada a una caja de cambios automática de cuatro velocidades.
Por otro lado, la variante diesel se presenta como la auténtica estrella de su catálogo
para el mercado europeo; el 2.8 CRD de 177 CV ha sido mejorado en distintos aspectos
respecto de su anterior edición, lo que ha propiciado una reducción de su peso de un 6 por
ciento, y ligeras mejoras en materia de prestaciones y consumos. En el caso de esta
motorización diesel, las opciones de transmisión son dos: una manual de seis marchas o
una automática de cinco.

ne of the most charismatic vehicles on the 4x4 market will introduce next month
a new and improved generation of vehicles. We are, of course, referring to the
famous Cherokee jeep, one of the Jeep Industry’s main reference points. With the
traditional Sport and Limited versions, the Cherokee range maintains the brand image
inspired by sixty-five years of experience in the jeep world. Its design is undeniably
Cherokee with the Jeep's classic seven-slot grille, clamshell hood, and round
headlamps.
With a light “retro” touch that combines perfectly with the renewed style and
comfort, the Cherokee Sport and Limited models offer an optional power sunroof with
a tilt and slide feature. Manufactured in reinforced acrylic canvas, this feature can be
operated forwards to backwards electronically, leaving both rows of seats in the open
or, if preferred, backwards to forwards leaving the row of back seats open.
TWO TYPES OF ENGINE
The new Cherokee will be available with two different types of engine. Faithful to
its origins, the more powerful version is the 3.7 litre single overhead cam (SOHC) V6
producing 150 kW at 5,200 rpm and 307 Nm of torque at 3,700 rpm. The engine’s
valve train and combustion chamber enhance low-speed torque while providing a
smooth idle and minimal engine noise. A sophisticated new electronic throttle control
system tailors throttle response to pedal movement and operating conditions to
maintain a consistent vehicle speed when cruise control is active. This version comes
with four-speed automatic transmission. The favourite, however, for the European
market is, without a doubt, the diesel engine model fitted with a 2.8 litre CRD diesel
engine that produces 120 kW at 3,800 rpm and 400 Nm of torque between 1,800-
2,400 rpm. Its improved features have provided a 6 percent weight reduction and a
number of improvements in performance and fuel consumption. This diesel engine
version is presented with two types of transmission: a manual six-speed or an
automatic five speed transmission.

DESPLIEGUE TÉCNICO
Esta última edición Cherokee cuenta con el nuevo Select-Trac II como elemento de serie
común a los acabados Sport y Limited y una de sus novedades técnicas más importantes.
Los ingenieros de la firma estadounidense han puesto a punto de una manera brillante este
dispositivo de tracción 4x4 permanente y activo, que se anticipa a las variaciones del grado
de adherencia del firme y evita el deslizamiento de las ruedas antes de que éste se
produzca.
El sistema ofrece tres modos de utilización; el primero de ellos es el “4WD Auto”,
adecuado para una conducción continuada, con reparto del par en tiempo real entre ambos
ejes. Por otro lado, si se quiere disponer de la máxima tracción a baja velocidad, el modo
“4WD Low” aplica la reductora para superar pendientes pronunciadas o terrenos complicados.
Además, este modo bloquea el embrague de la caja de transferencia para aportar la
máxima tracción. Para condiciones de buen asfalto y vías rápidas, el modo “2WD” hace
que el Cherokee funcione sólo con tracción a las ruedas posteriores. Una destacable
gestión de la tracción que se ve complementada con el HDC, un control de descensos
disponible únicamente en combinación con la caja de cambios automática, que permite
mantener la velocidad constante y controlada en descensos pronunciados, siempre con el
modo “4WD Low” conectado y con independencia de la marcha que llevemos engranada.
Para finalizar el apartado de seguridad activa, su avanzado antibloqueo de frenos ABS
condiciona su funcionamiento según el terreno sobre el que se circule, y así adaptar la
distancia de frenado a cada circunstancia. Tecnología de última generación para todo un
clásico del sector del todo terreno.
TECHNICAL FEATURES
One of the most important technical novelties of this model is the Selec-Trac II
system. To be included as a common feature in both the Sport and Limited models, the
North American car engineers have created a magnificent four-wheel drive system
that provides two-wheel drive, part-time four-wheel drive high range, full-time fourdrive
high range or low-range four-wheel drive.
This system offers three different options. The “4WD Auto” option designed for
continuous driving in real time with equal distribution between the axles. For maximum,
low speed traction, the “4WD Low” option offers optimum performance on rocky
slopes and difficult surfaces. This system offers maximum traction. The “2WD” is the
option designed for smooth highway surfaces. The HDC “4WD Low” option in the
automatic transmission version controls the vehicle’s speed, no matter what has been
selected by the driver, during complicated descents. The new Cherokee has also been
fitted with a suspension with cast-iron lower control arms designed to withstand
impacts from rock strikes and cub impacts. Other features include concentric coil
springs and shock absorbers that protect against off-road hazards, while frontsuspension
jounce bumpers enhance its smooth, comfortable ride on-and-off
road. Rack-and-pinion steering completes the package for precise steering with
uncompromising performance. Safety features include a modern ABS brake system
and an Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) designed to help drivers maintain control
during extreme steering manoeuvres. State-of-the-art technology for one of the Jeep

variada y divertida oferta de entretenimiento,
que encabezan las internacionalmente conocidas
murgas, irónicos versos populares creados y
cantados por los hospitalarios santoños. Los
actos tienen una variada programación que se
extiende desde el 25 de enero hasta el 17 de
febrero.
El Carnaval

O
tra de las piezas fundamentales del carnaval es obra de José Carlos Juncal Ibaceta
quien en 1981, a partir de una murga, creó el guión de la representación de “El Juicio
en el Fondo del Mar” del que todos podemos disfrutar hoy y, como dice, “no es más que
una metáfora en defensa de la vida y del medio ambiente”.
Así, lo que en un principio fue sólo una pequeña iniciativa que consiguió que en 1981
todo el pueblo saliese a la calle disfrazado, se convirtió en sólo un año en la fiesta perfectamente
estructurada que hoy conocemos: Desfile, concurso de murgas y “Juicio en el
Fondo del Mar”.
A lo largo de los años el carnaval de Santoña ha ido perfeccionándose, día a día, gracias
al esfuerzo de los ciudadanos de la villa logrando que esta fiesta sea un referente entre los
carnavales que se celebran por toda la geografía española.
LA REPRESENTACIÓN DE “EL JUICIO EN EL FONDO DEL MAR”
El argumento de esta obra parte del amor prohibido de un besugo por una sirena. Éste
llega a raptarla pero pronto los peces del mar logran apresarlo y comienza así un juicio en
el que todos los habitantes acuáticos exponen su versión sobre los hechos.
En el juicio están presentes todos los personajes: desde el abogado defensor, interpretado
por un salvareo hasta el procurador, que es un pez volador o los lenguados
ejerciendo la función de bedeles.
El juicio está estructurado en tres partes: En “el paseo del reo”, el besugo es conducido
por las calles de Santoña hasta llegar a la plaza de San Antonio en dónde se escenifica el
juicio en el Fondo del Mar ante Neptuno, rey de los mares, y los peces y moluscos.
Aunque el besugo es absuelto, muere de amor al saberse rechazado por la sirena, y es
entonces cuando comienza el desfile que acompaña al besugo hasta su última morada: la
bahía de Santoña.
La comitiva está compuesta por numerosos peces y vecinos enlutados y entristecidos
por el deceso. Esta marcha continúa hasta El Pasaje en donde el besugo es depositado en
una balsa a la que se le prende fuego. Las cenizas del besugo personifican la figura del
carnaval de Santoña.

in 1985, the Carnival of Santoña offers a wide
variety of entertainment. Amongst its most
popular events is the internationally famous
“Murgas” Contest. The Murgas are ironic
popular songs written and sung by the
hospitable “Santoños” (inhabitants of Santoña).
The next edition of this fascinating carnival will
take place from 25th January to 17th February,
2008.

A
nother popular carnival event is the play, “El Juicio en el Fondo del Mar” (The
Seabed Trial) written by Jose Carlos Juncal Abaceta who, in 1981, wrote a
script based on a “murga” which, in his own words, “is no more than a metaphor
for the defence of life and the environment”.
What started out as a small initiative, managed, in 1981, to get the whole village
to participate, turning this festivity into a structured carnival comprising a Fancy
Dress Parade, a “Murga” Song Contest and the Seabed Trial amongst other things.
Over the years, the Carnival of Santoña has become more and more popular
thanks to the numerous efforts of the Santoña town residents. It is, today, an
important reference point for the rest of Spain’s numerous carnival festivities.
THE SEABED TRIAL PLAY
This amusing play is based on the unrequited love of a sea bream for a
mermaid. The forlorn Sea Bream decides to kidnap the Mermaid, but is
immediately caught and brought to trial. Numerous fish species are called to
testify at his trial.
Amongst the personalities that take part in the trial are the Defence Lawyer
characterised by a “salvareo” fish, the Public Prosecutor characterised by a flying
fish and a number of wardens characterised by sole fish.
The Seabed Trial is divided into three parts. These include the Prisoner Parade
during which the Sea Bream is paraded through the streets of Santoña ending up
at the San Antonio Square where he is brought before Neptune, King of the Seven
Seas, and a variety of fish and molluscs. In spite of the fact that the Sea Bream is
acquitted, he falls down dead after being told that the Mermaid does not want
anything to do with him. The dead Sea Bream is transported to the Bay of Santoña.
The Funeral March, made up of a large number of grieving fish and neighbours,
continue on to the “El Pasaje” where the dead Sea Bream is deposited on a float
and cremated. The ashes of the Sea Bream personify the main figure of the
Carnival of Santoña.

LAS MURGAS SANTOÑESAS
Un aliciente más de este carnaval son las murgas. En Santoña las murgas de adultos e
infantiles se preparan a lo largo de todo el año para deleitar a todo aquel que se acerque
hasta la villa durante el carnaval.
Los ensayos comienzan bien temprano, en octubre del año anterior, y aunque en
principio sólo se reúnen los fines de semana, a partir del mes de enero las reuniones para
ensayar las canciones se producen todos los fines de semana.
En el concurso de murgas se puntúa cuatro conceptos:
• La escenografía: es decir, la decoración que se utilice para apoyar la murga.
• La letra y crítica.
• El canto: la calidad de la interpretación de la murga.
• La puesta en escena.
ESTRUCTURA DEL CONCURSO
La estructura del concurso de murgas es la siguiente: En la primera preliminar: el fin de
semana del 25, 26 y 27 de enero, actúan todas las murgas que se presentan a concurso
interpretando su murga que viene a durar unos 20 minutos. El siguiente fin de semana, los
días 28, 29 y 30, se desarrolla la segunda preliminar, en la que las mismas murgas interpretan
de nuevo las canciones que pueden sufrir alguna alteración en alguna de las partes
que componen la murga. De esta segunda preliminar quedan 6 murgas y el 31 de enero se
falla la murga ganadora.
Las murgas se estructuran en cinco partes: presentación, dos pasodobles, estribillo, un
popurrí y el final.
Los pequeños también participan del popular concurso de murgas, siendo su presentación
el día 26 de enero y su final el 1 de febrero.
GRAN DESFILE DE CARNAVAL
El Gran Desfile para los mayores se celebrará el 2 de febrero y en el participan año tras
año unas 12 agrupaciones, mientras que los niños tienen su gran día la víspera, el 1 de
febrero.
Como todos los años, el Gran Desfile contará con un concurso de disfraces cuyos
premios se otorgarán una vez acabado el mismo, a las 21,30 horas.
El carnaval culmina el fin de semana del 15, 16 y 17 de febrero con el Mercado
Medieval y la celebración puntal el día 16 del día del aldeano.
Durante todo el fin de semana la plaza de San Antonio se transforma en un foro
medieval y los oficios y costumbres de la época invaden las calles de Santoña.
El Día del Aldeano las peñas, murgas y grupos de la villa salen por las calles tirando de
un carro especialmente habilitado para ese día con una plancha en la que se van cocinando
chorizos, morcillas, costillas y pimientos que comparten con quien se vayan encontrando
a su paso.
THE MURGAS OF SANTOÑA
Another important feature of the Santoña Carnival is the Murgas Song Contest.
This entertaining event is divided into two categories: The Adult category and the
Children’s category. The competing songs are rehearsed for several months prior
to the Carnival and are extremely popular.
Rehearsals normally begin around October and generally take place once a week
until the following January when these are intensified.
The Murgas Song Contest is judged as follows:
• The scenography or, in other words, the decoration used to represent the
song.
• The lyrics and quality of their content.
• The interpretative quality.
• The staging.
THE FORMAT OF THE SONG CONTEST
The Murgas Song Contest Programme is as follows: The first preliminary takes
place on 25th, 26th and 27th January when the Murgas are presented. Each song
lasts some 20 minutes. The second preliminary takes place on 28th, 29th and 30th
January when the Murgas are performed once again with possible changes. A total
of six songs are chosen at this point. The winner is announced on 31st January.
The representations are divided into five parts: Presentation, Two Pasodobles,
Chorus, Potpourri and Finale.
As mentioned previously a Children’s Song Contest also takes place starting on
26th January with the Final taking place on 1st February.
THE GRAND PARADE
The Adult Grand Parade takes place on 2nd February and comprises some 12
groups of neighbours, whilst the Children’s Grand Parade takes place the day
before on 1st February.
The Grand Parade includes a Fancy Dress Contest with prizes being presented
on the same day at 21.30 hours.
The Carnival comes to a close on 15th, 16th and 17th February with the
celebration of a Medieval Market and the “Dia del Aldeano” (Locals’ Day) festivities.
During the above-mentioned weekend, the previously mentioned San Antonio
Square is transformed into a medieval marketplace and the streets of Santoña are
filled with entertainers and tradesmen from the Medieval period.
During the “Dia del Aldeano”, the local clubs, members of the Murga groups and
neighbour associations pull specially adapted carts around the streets on which
they cook “chorizos”, (spicy sausage) “morcillas” (black sausage), “costillas” (ribs)
and “pimientos” (peppers) which they share with anyone they bump into.

Este privilegiado espacio natural gallego, cincelado por la acción de la
erosión, destaca por las numerosas especies de flora y fauna que se
dan cita en él, así como por los singulares ejemplos arquitectónicos
medievales, denominados chozos, que atesora.

The beautiful landscapes of the Sierra del Suido were produced
by long periods of erosion. This privileged Galician nature area,
offers visitors, amongst other things, a wide variety of flora and
fauna as well as a number of unique medieval buildings known
as “chozas”.

a Sierra del Suído engloba principalmente
parte de los municipios de Avión
y Beariz, en Ourense, y de A Lama, Fornelos
de Montes y O Covelo en Pontevedra, perteneciendo
a ésta última provincia la mayor
parte de los aproximadamente 200 kilómetros
cuadrados de extensión que integran
este hermoso paraje caracterizado por sus
espectaculares vistas, por los numerosos
ríos que lo surcan, como el Avia, principal
afluente del Miño, el Couso, el Verdugo, el
Cubeta o Folgoso, y por su inmensa riqueza
en cuanto a variedad de animales y plantas
se refiere.
De la masa forestal citar la presencia
de “carballeiras”, como la de Pigarzos, la
mayor de Pontevedra, acebos, abedules,
alisos, sauces, castaños o alcornoques;
matorrales, representados por “xestas”,
tojos... y, entre las especies de sotobosque,
“rascacús”, arándanos, avellanos, laureles...
La Sierra del Suído también es un emplazamiento
que despunta por la diversidad de
su fauna, siendo una de las escasas áreas
de Galicia donde aún es posible observar
sensacionales rapaces como águilas culebreras,
aguiluchos pálidos, búhos reales,
azores, halcones abejeros y peregrinos... y
otras aves de menor tamaño como petos
reales, cucos... En tierra firme es notable la

he Sierra del Suido can be located, in
part, in the municipalities of Avion y
Beariz in Ourense and A Lama, Fornelos
de Montes and O Covelo in Pontevedra.
The main part of the sierra, some 200
square kilometres, can be found in the
O Covelo municipality where visitors will
find spectacular panoramic views of
numerous rivers such as the Avia River,
main affluent of the Miño, Couso, Verdugo,
Cubeta and Folgoso rivers along with a
rich variety of animal and plant species.
The main forest mass to be found
here includes a number of magnificent
“carballeiras” such as the one known as
Pigarzos, the largest in the province of
Pontevedra, along with holly, birch, alder,
willow, chestnut and cork trees and a wide
variety of thicket that includes “xestas”,
furze etc. and other woodland bushes
such as “rascacus”, bilberry, hazelnut,
evergreen etc.
The Sierra del Suido also offers a
wide variety of fauna. In fact, it is one
of the few places left in Galicia where
sensational birds of prey such as the
snake buzzard, pale eaglet, eagle owl,
goshawk, honey buzzard and peregrine
falcon can be sighted. Other smaller bird
species to be found here include the green

presencia de corzos, lobos, gatos monteses,
lirones caretos, jinetas... Completan
este listado animal reptiles y anfibios como
la culebra de agua, la víbora de Seoane, las
ranas verdes y bermejas, el lagarto arnal o
tritón común.
La Sierra del Suído añade a sus sugerentes
panorámicas, muchas de ellas surcadas
por caprichosos y serpenteantes cursos
fluviales, núcleos de vegetación autóctona e
interesante catálogo faunístico, unas muestras
de arquitectura del Medievo dignas
de mención conocidas con el nombre de
chozos, que son edificaciones elaboradas
con piedra de neis que ofrecían resguardo
a los pastores para cuidar el ganado a lo
largo del año. Algunos ejemplos de estas
construcciones típicas son los chozos de
San Xusto o “da fenteira”, de Cernadas,
de San Vicente, de Abelenda, de Campo
Larogo o el de Mangüeiro.
Además, la mayoría de poblaciones que
jalonan la zona atesoran un buen patrimonio
monumental y artístico, tanto religioso
como civil, en el que sobresalen, entre
otros, iglesias parroquiales de distintos
estilos, hórreos, hornos de pan y puentes,
como el de Berducido, de sillería, alzado
en el siglo XVII y que conserva aún parte
de su primitiva calzada romana.

Worth mentioning are the San Xusto or
“da fenteira”, San Vicente, Abelenda,
Campo Larogo and Mangüeiro chozas.
The majority of towns and villages
situated in the beautiful Sierra de Suido
also house both religious and civil
monumental and artistic patrimony.
Amongst this patrimony, we would
mention its large variety of parish
churches, “horreo” buildings, stone
ovens and bridges such as the Berducido
bridge with its ashlar stone masonry.

AIR NOSTRUM inaugurará el próximo 1 de
febrero tres nuevas rutas directas que unirá Madrid
con Rennes, Clermont-Ferrand y Montpelier. Estos
nuevos enlaces supondrán una mejorara de la
conectividad, tanto par viajes de ocio como de
negocios, dentro de la amplía operación con que
cuenta la aerolínea en el país galo.
En el caso de los enlaces con Clermont-Ferrand y
Rennes, la aerolínea ofrecerá un total de 4 vuelos
semanales –los lunes, miércoles, viernes y domingos–.
Para Montepellier, la compañía ha dispuesto
3 semanales –los martes, jueves y sábados–. En el
ámbito turístico estos tres destinos franceses están
considerados entre los mejores de la zona. Rennes,
capital de Bretaña, ciudad dos veces milenaria –con
un rico patrimonio– constituye una etapa obligatoria
para conocer, comprender y apreciar la realidad
bretona del pasado y del presente. Por su parte,
la situación geográfica de Montpellier, al sur de

three new direct flight routes from Madrid to

new flight routes will, without a doubt, increase the
already important number of business and private
flight operations to France.
These new flight operations will comprise
4 weekly flights –Monday, Wednesday, Friday and
Sunday– to Clermont-Ferrand and Rennes and 3
weekly flights –Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday–
to Montpellier. Clermont-Ferrand, Rennes and
Montpellier are considered three of France’s most
important areas. The 2,000-year-old capital of
Brittany, Rennes, constitutes, with its rich patrimony,
an obligatory destination for visitors interested in
getting to know the past, present and future of this
beautiful French region. The location of Montpellier,
in the south of France, between the sea and Holm
oak groves with views of the Mediterranean basin,
but also close to Paris, makes it an ideal leisure destination for short and middle
distances. Finally, Clermont-Ferrand, capital of the Region of Auvernia and
Department of Puy-de-Dome, is situated in the centre of France. To the west
of this picturesque city lies the mountain chain housing the Puy-de-Dome, its

The geographical location of the Spanish region of Castilla y Leon and its
network of important motorways –A62, A-1 AP-1, A-6, N-630 Via de la Plata

This has allowed the regional authorities to design a novel logistic network
model using the present transport centres located on the regional motorway
routes in order to turn these into Logistic Enclaves.

and Transport Complementary Infrastructure CyLoG Network’ has been created.
The introduction of this network has already made a noticeable difference

central management model that will guarantee greater product and export
competitiveness whilst, at the same time, modernising and amalgamating the
local transport sector.

e Historia Sagrada en
el Siglo de Oro: Durante todo el
mes de enero. A través de la mitología
y la historia sagrada Velázquez
abordó gran cantidad de
problemas expresivos, formales
y conceptuales a los que difícilmente
podría haberse enfrentado
de otra manera. Formada por
un total de 52 obras, 28 de ellas
de Velázquez y 24 de otros diecisiete
artistas, la muestra describe
la originalidad que el genial pintor
sevillano procuró y alcanzó en
el tratamiento de estos temas, así
como las variaciones que experimentó
su arte a lo largo de su
carrera.

Durante todo el mes de enero.
Esta magnífica exposición está
formada por los 14 óleos que
componen “Visión de España”,
serie realizada entre 1911 y 1919
en la que el genial maestro valenciano
plasmó las costumbres y las
gentes de las regiones españolas
de principios del siglo XX. Además
de por estos singulares lienzos,
que destacan por su gran tamaño
e impresionante luminosidad, realizados
por encargo de la Hispanic
Society de Nueva York, emplazamiento
del que salen por primera
vez en su historia, la muestra se
complementa con publicaciones,
congresos, talleres didácticos dirigidos
a escolares y personas
mayores, y otras actividades que
se desarrollarán en paralelo a la
exposición y que ayudarán a conocer
más a fondo la obra del pintor
valenciano.
