Brothers & Sisters,
Thousands of us have won
better wages and benefits
as our janitorial contract
campaigns continue.
In the past several months,
thousands of Local 1
members fought hard and
won better jobs: janitors in
Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit,
Indianapolis, Milwaukee,
Kansas City and Toledo won
raises and protected their
benefits, ensuring a better
future for themselves and their
families.
We stood our ground during a five week strike in
Houston and it paid off for thousands of janitors and their
families. After a grueling campaign that sparked national
attention, we successfully beat back the contractors’
attempts to destroy our union and roll back the progress
we’ve made since 2006. More than 3,000 janitors won
a 12 percent raise over
four years—double the
contractors’ final offer at
impasse in May.
The progress we made in
Houston brings hope to
security officers, airport
workers and others who are
organizing for better wages
and benefits. Because of
the persistence, dedication
and hard work of members
and allies, we are winning
victories for the 99% and
turning low wage jobs into
good jobs.
Once again, we are proving
that when workers stand
together, we win.

has fought for working families, and shares our vision
of a nation that invests in good jobs here at home. Mitt
Romney continues to advocate policies that benefit
himself and the rest of the richest 1% of Americans.

SEIU Local 1 Members Vote
Yes for a Stronger Union
SEIU Local 1 members are 50,000 strong, winning
better wages and benefits for our families. But middle
class jobs are under attack, and we have a tough fight
ahead.
That’s why SEIU Local 1 members in seven states
overwhelmingly approved a new dues system to make
our union even stronger: 79% of participating members
voted yes for a new dues system that will link the dues
we pay with our wages starting January 1, 2013.
Now we are all on equal footing and we have the
