adquiridos y proyectos finales de integración, lo cual se traduce <strong>en</strong> que se alcanzan las<br />
metas de compr<strong>en</strong>sión propuestas, sin embargo, se debe reforzar la estrategia de<br />
activación de conocimi<strong>en</strong>tos previos, la incorporación de conocimi<strong>en</strong>tos previos de los<br />
cursos anteriores, la organización de cont<strong>en</strong>idos temáticos y la evaluación progresiva.<br />

Abstract<br />
The r<strong>en</strong>ovation of the teaching of Law has be<strong>en</strong> a rec<strong>en</strong>t cause for concern, giv<strong>en</strong> the<br />
emerging needs of the new globalized economy and of the knowledge society. The<br />
Teaching for Understanding model (TfU) can be an optimum strategy for this r<strong>en</strong>ovation<br />
since it str<strong>en</strong>gth<strong>en</strong>s professional aptitudes such as critical thinking, creativity, the<br />
understanding of Law as a system, the interpretation of the legal system and the critical<br />
evaluation of its application. There are no investigations in Costa Rica about the<br />
application of the TfU model in the field of Law, because only ULACIT has pioneering<br />
experi<strong>en</strong>ce in the systematic implem<strong>en</strong>tation of this methodology in teaching Law and its<br />
results have not be<strong>en</strong> evaluated until now. Therefore there is a need to fill that void and<br />
to provide input to str<strong>en</strong>gth<strong>en</strong> Costa Rica’s college education. A good indicator of the<br />
adequate use of TfU is the building of new knowledge through a link betwe<strong>en</strong> previous<br />
knowledge and new information. Based on this, this research answers the question: In<br />
what measure are the elem<strong>en</strong>ts which make up the link betwe<strong>en</strong> previous knowledge<br />
and the new TfU information pres<strong>en</strong>t in the perception by Law stud<strong>en</strong>ts of the strategies<br />
used by ULACIT Law professors in their classes? After including a bibliographic<br />
framework on the teaching of Law, the results of an opinion poll conducted among 52<br />
ULACIT Law stud<strong>en</strong>ts are shown. The conclusion was that the application of the TfU<br />
approach has reached a relative degree of achievem<strong>en</strong>t, for the traditional paradigm has<br />
be<strong>en</strong> brok<strong>en</strong>, professors emphasize compreh<strong>en</strong>sion as a goal and as a learning process,<br />
the subjects arouse interest and are connected with experi<strong>en</strong>ce, and there is a chance to<br />
demonstrate acquired knowledge and final integration projects, which translates into<br />
reaching the proposed compreh<strong>en</strong>sion goals; however, the strategy to activate previous<br />
knowledge, the incorporation of previous knowledge from prior courses, the<br />
organization of thematic cont<strong>en</strong>ts and progressive evaluation must be str<strong>en</strong>gth<strong>en</strong>ed.<br />
