(29-0105) DESTREZAS BÁSICAS III:
ESCUCHA Y HABLA
This course develops high intermediate conversation,
pronunciation, idiomatic and aural comprehension skills.
Conversational and idiomatic skills focus on increasingly
fluent communication and interaction skills in complex
speaking situations and comfortable use of English in a
variety of situations, both academic and professional.
Pronunciation focuses on improved clarity of speech
and on increased control of the stress, intonation and
rhythm of English. Listening comprehension stresses
understanding complex syntax, register, nuance and
tone in conversations on campus and in the workplace.
Students will learn how to speak at length on a given topic,
both prepared and extemporaneous, and to understand
the subtleties of conversational English.
(29-0107) DESTREZAS BÁSICAS II:
LECTURA Y REDACCIÓN
This course emphasizes the continued acquisition of
reading and writing skills needed for college level courses,
expansion of receptive and productive vocabulary, and
comprehension of medium-length adapted reading
selections. Reading skills practice includes using context
clues, skimming, scanning anticipating, simple inferencing
and distinguishing fact vs. opinion. Vocabulary building
focuses on predicting meaning of vocabulary from context,
use of contextual clues in identifying the relationship of
ideas in factual writing, and expanded study of idioms,
prefixes, suffixes and word roots.

(29-0106) DESTREZAS BÁSICAS I:
LECTURA Y REDACCIÓN
This course focuses on developing basic reading and
writing skills. After completing the course, students
are expected to be able to write short messages and
descriptions; fill out simple forms; apply basic principles
of capitalization and punctuation; read simplified short
texts on familiar topics and answer factual questions
about the reading; scan to locate information in text; and
categorize vocabulary (synonyms, antonyms). Students
will also increase their vocabulary.
(29-0108) DESTREZAS BÁSICAS III:
LECTURA Y REDACCIÓN
This course aims at developing students’ ability to make
simple oral presentations, retell simple stories, participate
in face-to-face conversations on topics going beyond the
most immediate needs, identify the main ideas and factual
information in level-appropriate listening passages.
Students will also increase their vocabulary.
