ESCUCHA Y HABLA<br />
This course develops high intermediate conversation,<br />
pronunciation, idiomatic and aural comprehension skills.<br />
Conversational and idiomatic skills focus on increasingly<br />
fluent communication and interaction skills in complex<br />
speaking situations and comfortable use of English in a<br />
variety of situations, both academic and professional.<br />
Pronunciation focuses on improved clarity of speech<br />
and on increased control of the stress, intonation and<br />
rhythm of English. Listening comprehension stresses<br />
understanding complex syntax, register, nuance and<br />
tone in conversations on campus and in the workplace.<br />
Students will learn how to speak at length on a given topic,<br />
both prepared and extemporaneous, and to understand<br />
the subtleties of conversational English.<br />
(29-0107) DESTREZAS BÁSICAS II:<br />
LECTURA Y REDACCIÓN<br />
This course emphasizes the continued acquisition of<br />
reading and writing skills needed for college level courses,<br />
expansion of receptive and productive vocabulary, and<br />
comprehension of medium-length adapted reading<br />
selections. Reading skills practice includes using context<br />
clues, skimming, scanning anticipating, simple inferencing<br />
and distinguishing fact vs. opinion. Vocabulary building<br />
focuses on predicting meaning of vocabulary from context,<br />
use of contextual clues in identifying the relationship of<br />
ideas in factual writing, and expanded study of idioms,<br />
prefixes, suffixes and word roots.<br />

(29-0106) DESTREZAS BÁSICAS I:<br />
LECTURA Y REDACCIÓN<br />
This course focuses on developing basic reading and<br />
writing skills. After completing the course, students<br />
are expected to be able to write short messages and<br />
descriptions; fill out simple forms; apply basic principles<br />
of capitalization and punctuation; read simplified short<br />
texts on familiar topics and answer factual questions<br />
about the reading; scan to locate information in text; and<br />
categorize vocabulary (synonyms, antonyms). Students<br />
will also increase their vocabulary.<br />
(29-0108) DESTREZAS BÁSICAS III:<br />
LECTURA Y REDACCIÓN<br />
This course aims at developing students’ ability to make<br />
simple oral presentations, retell simple stories, participate<br />
in face-to-face conversations on topics going beyond the<br />
most immediate needs, identify the main ideas and factual<br />
information in level-appropriate listening passages.<br />
Students will also increase their vocabulary.<br />
