Welcome / Bienvenidos
Raleigh Expedition 09L has been an astounding success. It is the
combined energy, dedication and sheer hard work of all 81 Venturers
and 21 Volunteer Managers that has made the projects we’ve worked
on so outstanding, as you will see in the following pages. Each of
you has made a positive and lasting impact on your team members
as well as the local communities and the National Parks in which
your projects were based. We hope that you all leave Costa Rica and
Nicaragua feeling that you have challenged yourselves and that you
have had the time of your lives. We would like to say a massive thank
you to all of you for making the last 3 months such an incredible
experience.

La Expedición 09L de Raleigh ha sido todo un éxito. La
combinación de energía, dedicación y arduo trabajo de los 81
participantes y 21 guías, es lo que ha hecho que los mismos sean
tan exitosos, tal y como se podrá evidenciar en las siguientes
páginas. Cada uno de ustedes ha marcado un impacto positivo
y duradero sobre los miembros de su equipo, así como en las
comunidades locales y los Parques Nacionales en donde se ubican
los proyectos. Esperamos que dejen Costa Rica y Nicaragua
sintiendo que no sólo se han desafiado a ustedes mismos sino que
aparte pudieron experimentar uno de los mejores momentos en

Raleigh is a charity that provides adventurous and challenging
expeditions for young adults aged 17-24 from diverse backgrounds
and nationalities. Over the last 25 years, 30,000 people have been
involved in more than 250 expeditions in more than 40 countries
worldwide. Participants have had the opportunity to develop their
skills, explore the world, and make a real impact on local communities
and the environment. Raleigh has been working in Costa Rica
and Nicaragua for the past seven years. We have completed 176
projects, all with the absolute dedication of 2012 Venturers and 475
Volunteer Managers. These people have volunteered their time to
make a positive impact on diverse communities and to aid in the
conservation of the environment for the people of Costa Rica and
Nicaragua.
Raleigh Internacional es una organización de caridad que ofrece
expediciones de aventura y retos para gente de todas las clases,
nacionalidades, especialmente gente joven entre 17 y 24 años.
Desde hace 25 años, 30.000 personas se han involucrado en más
de 250 expediciones alrededor de 40 países, desarrollando sus
habilidades, explorando el mundo y marcando la diferencia en
comunidades locales y medio ambiente. Raleigh ha trabajado en
Costa Rica y Nicaragua desde hace siete años. Hemos realizado
176 proyectos, con la absoluta dedicación de 2012 participantes
y 475 Guías Voluntarios. Esta gente ha ofrecido su tiempo para
crear un impacto positivo en diversas comunidades y ayudar con la
sostenibilidad del ambiente de Costa Rica y Nicaragua.

Raleigh considers the participation of young people from Costa Rica and
Nicaragua crucial to the success of our expeditions.
Partnership Venturers
These venturers are positive young people from disadvantaged
backgrounds in the UK who participate on a Raleigh expedition as part of a
longer term development programme.
UK and International Fundraising Venturers
Fundraising Venturers work hard to raise money to contribute towards the
charity’s work and expenses in order to take part in the expedition.
Raleigh Graduate Bursary Award Venturers
This a new initiative, part-funded by the UK Government Department
for Business, Innovation and Skills, aimed at recent graduates looking to
gain experience, become global citizens and improve their chances of
employment upon return home.
Volunteer Managers
Each year over 300 Volunteer Managers join Raleigh expeditions in a variety
of roles. They play an integral part in the running of these expeditions,
helping to make a difference to the lives of young people and local
communities.

Cada año recibimos más de 300 guías voluntarios para un sin fin de roles
basados tanto en las diferentes áreas de proyectos como en la oficina
central, y los cuales no sólo ayudan en la realización de estas expediciones
sino que también marcan una gran diferencia en la vida de jóvenes y
comunidades.

Community Projects
Living in the heart of some of the most remote
areas in Costa Rica and Nicaragua, these
projects provide a unique opportunity to work
alongside members of communities to help
provide basic facilities such as access to clean
water and education. The hard work of the
Raleigh groups helps to improve the quality of
life and provide valuable resources for many
generations to come.

más remotas de Costa Rica y Nicaragua, estos
proyectos brindan la oportunidad única de
trabajar con miembros de las comunidades
ayudando a proveer facilidades básicas tales

Adventure Projects
Each trek covers over 250 kilometres in 19 days.
Learning navigation, camping and survival
skills along the way, teamwork, determination
and a good sense of humour are essential.
The 4am starts, tough climbs and up to 10
hours trekking a day are all worthwhile when
you are rewarded with incredible views,
abundant wildlife and an enormous sense
of achievement upon arrival at the beautiful
beaches; this truly gives each person the belief
they can overcome any future challenge they
may be faced with.

Cada caminata abarca más de 250 kilómetros
en 19 días. Aprendiendo de paso destrezas de
supervivencia, orientación, y campamento;
el trabajo en equipo, una gran determinación
y un buen sentido del humor son esenciales
en este sentido. Se inicia a las 4 am, con duras
escaladas y caminatas de 10 horas al día las
cuales son recompensadas con increíbles
paisajes, abundante vida silvestre y un enorme
sentido de logro tras la llegada a las hermosas
playas. Esto realmente otorga a cada persona
la certeza de que podrá superar cualquier reto
que pueda enfrentar en el futuro.

Environmental Projects
Working alongside SINAC (Costa Rican National
System of Conservation Areas) based in Costa
Rica’s National Parks, the environmental groups
live and work alongside the park rangers to
help maintain and improve the national parks.
The projects are hugely important in helping
to preserve natural resources & habitats and
protect important species of plants & animals.

Juntos podemos abrir los tubos
Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and a
third of the population still had no access to sustainable sources of drinking
water in 2007. Raleigh has worked in partnership with the Co-operative
Juan Fransisco Paz Silva for eight years in the district of Achuapa, Nicaragua
to deliver small scale water projects that benefit local communities and
families.
Nicaragua es el segundo país más pobre en el Hermisferio Occidental y en
el que todavía en el 2007 la tercera parte de la población no tenía acceso a
agua potable. Raleigh ha trabajado en Achuapa, Nicaragua, por ocho años,
en alianza con la Cooperativa Juan Francisco Paz Silva, con el objetivo
de llevar a cabo proyectos de agua potable de pequeña escala y que han
beneficiado a familias y comunidades locales.
In Achuapa, many of the people take their water from streams which often
dry up during the dry season and into which flow all the pesticides that they
place on their fields. In the area, there is an unusually high rate of cancers
associated with pesticide usage. During expedition 09L, Raleigh worked in
four different villages of Achuapa: La Calera, El Rodeito, El Cacao & Matapalo;
bringing clean and fresh water to 600 people
Over the next two years, Raleigh, in partnership with local communities,
aims to build five water projects which will directly benefit 200 families and
more than 1500 people.
To do this, we need your help. One gravity water feed system costs £7,890.
Think about it. Less than £40,000 to provide an entire region with clean and
safe water for the next twenty years. It’s not much, is it?
Access to clean and safe water alleviates illness and death, including
reducing under-five mortality rates, increasing life expectancy and generally
improving the quality of life. Less illness means more time spent at school
and work.
These projects will not only provide water for hundreds of people in the
Achuapa region, it will also give them the chance to build a better future for
themselves and their families.

En Achuapa, mucha de la gente se abastece de agua de los riachuelos que
normalmente se secan durante la estación seca y en el cual fluyen todos
los pesticidas que se aplican en los campos. En el área, existe un inusual
índice de casos de cáncer asociados con el uso de pesticidas. Durante la
expedición 09L, Raleig trabajó en Achaupa, en cuatro pueblos diferentes: La
Calera, El Rodeito, El Cacao y Matapalo; brindando agua fresca y potable a
600 personas.
En los próximos 2 años, Raleigh en asociación con las comunidades, se
propone construir cinco proyectos de agua potable, los cuales beneficiaran
directamente a 200 familias y más de 1500 personas.
Para hacer esto, necesitamos de tu ayuda. Un sistema de suministro de
agua por gravedad tiene un costo de 7.890 libras esterlinas. Menos de
40.000 libras esterlinas para proveer con agua potable a toda una región por
los siguientes 20 años. ¡¿No es mucho, verdad?!
Acceso a agua limpia y potable mitiga la enfermedad y la muerte, incluyendo
la reducción del índice de mortalidad por debajo de cinco, incrementando
la expectativa de vida y en general mejorando la calidad de vida. Menos
enfermedad significa más tiempo en la escuela y el trabajo.
Estos proyectos no solamente proveerán con agua a cientos de personas
en la región de Achuapa, sino que también les dará la oportunidad de construir
un mejor futuro para ellos y sus familias.

La Calera - Achuapa
“Working alongside the local community to provide clean water to 24
houses was an incredible and eye-opening experience. We soon settled into
the rhythm of La Calera life, waking to the sound of the roosters, breakfasts
of rice & beans with the delicious sweet local coffee, and ‘bucket showers’
in the back yard. Digging trenches was hard work, but we soon got
the hang of it, and learnt a lot under the patient instruction of our foremen
Chico and Jader. The hospitality and warmth of the local community was
both humbling and inspiring, and despite language barriers and the short
amount of time we were there, strong bonds were formed. On the final night,
the community threw us a leaving party complete with a piñata, musical
performances and speeches. There were tears from both sides as the time
came to say goodbye. But with the sadness of leaving new friends came the
satisfaction that they will benefit from the hard work of our group and now
have clean fresh water in their homes.”

“Fue una experiencia increíble y de gran significado el trabajar en
conjunto con la comunidad para abastecer de agua potable a 24 casas.
Rápidamente nos adaptamos al ritmo de vida de La Calera, nos despertábamos
con el canto de los gallos, desayunábamos arroz y frijoles con
el delicioso café del lugar, y nos bañábamos en el patio con cubetas de
agua. Fue muy duro el cavar zanjas, pero muy pronto aprendimos como
hacerlas bajo la tutela y paciencia de nuestros maestros de obra Chico
y Jader. La hospitalidad y amabilidad de la comunidad fue inspiradora, y
a pesar de la barrera del idioma y el poco tiempo que estuvimos por ahí,
logramos crear fuertes lazos de amistad. La última noche, la comunidad
nos organizó una fiesta con piñata, presentaciones musicales y discursos.
A la hora de partir hubo lágrimas tanto de los voluntarios como de
la comunidad. Sin embargo, con la tristeza de dejar a nuestros nuevos
amigos, sentimos también la satisfacción de que gracias a nuestro
arduo trabajo contarían con agua potable para sus hogares. “

El Zacaton - Miraflor Wildlife Reserve
“Who would have thought that the middle of a remote Nicaraguan wildlife
reserve would have provided the most incredible experience of my life?
Although the people of El Zacaton have no taps with running water, no gas
or electricity and no immediate contact with the rest of the world, they welcomed
us into their homes and lives with open arms and no hesitation. The
three weeks spent with the community have left me with numerous building
skills, a better grasp of Spanish and a greater understanding of Nicaraguan
culture. It is very rewarding to know that the community centre we built will
be so important to the villagers and will be there for many years to come.”
“¡¿Quién hubiera pensado que una remota reserva de vida silvestre Nicaraguense
iba a brindarme la experiencia más increíble de mi vida?! A pesar
de que la gente de El Zacatón no tienen tubos de donde salga agua, ni gas
o electricidad, ni contacto cercano con el resto del mundo, sin duda alguna,
nos recibieron en sus casas y en sus vidas con mucha hospitalidad y con los
brazos abiertos. Las tres semanas que pasé en la comunidad me dejaron
múltiples habilidades en construcción, una mejor comprensión del español y
un inmenso entendimiento de la cultura Nicaraguense. Es muy gratificante el
saber que el centro comunal que construimos será muy importante para los
lugareños y estará ahí por muchos años. “

Yorkin - Talamanca Indigenous Reserve
“Sailing up the Rio Yorkin in dugout canoes with Panama to our left and Costa
Rica to our right, we arrived in paradise. This small indigenous village is beautiful.
The Bri Bri people are warm, friendly and disarmingly welcoming. We worked
with ‘La Casa de Las Mujeres – Mujeres Artisanas’ founded in 1985 by Bernada
Morales Marin and led by a small group of women, which was created with the
aim of developing activities that would generate new sources of income and at
the same time allow the Bri Bri to preserve & promote their culture, history and
language through rural tourism. These very kind women took us into their capable
hands and organised us to create a pebble path running the length of the river
to the bridge, recently built to replace the one that was washed away in a freak
flash flood in 2008. We also built a shower and toilet block that had been previously
washed away. We immersed ourselves into their culture through craftwork,
learning about their history, walking through the forest discovering how their
ancestors used to hunt, cooking patacones and making chocolate from cacao, a
real delight! The setting is both moving and inspiring & I feel extremely privileged,
lucky and grateful to have spent time there.”

“Navegando en canoas por el Río Yorkin, con Panamá a nuestra izquierda y
Costa Rica a nuestra derecha, llegamos al paraíso. Esta pequeña aldea indígena
es hermosa. La gente de Bri Bri es gente cariñosa, amistosa y encantadoramente
amable. Trabajamos con ‘La Casa de las Mujeres - Mujeres Artesanas’
que fue fundada por Bernarda Morales Marín, en 1985, y liderada por un grupo
pequeño de mujeres, la cual fue creada con el objetivo de desarrollar actividades
que generarán nuevas fuentes de ingresos y al mismo tiempo permite a los Bri
Bri preservar y promover su cultura, historia y lenguaje a través del turismo rural.
Estas mujeres tan amables nos organizaron a crear un sendero de piedra a lo
largo del río y hasta el puente, recientemente construido para reemplazar el que
fue destruido por una inundación en 2008. También construimos una ducha y un
interior de bloque que también habían sido arrastrados anteriormente. Nos sumergimos
dentro de su cultura a través de sus artesanías, aprendiendo a cerca de
su historia, caminando a través del bosque descubriendo cómo sus antecesores
cazaban, cocinaban patacones y hacían chocolate con base en el cacao, ¡un
verdadero placer! El escenario es conmovedor e inspirador y me siento extremadamente
privilegiada, afortunada y agradecida de haber pasado tiempo ahí.”

Raleigh’s 25th Anniversary / 25 Anniversario
Our History
Back in 1978 when Colonel John Blashford-Snell and HRH Prince
Charles started Operation Drake, they had a vision. They wanted to
give young people the chance to explore the world and discover their
potential as leaders and members of a team working together to make
a difference. We still hold true these values today.
In 1984, following the success of Operation Drake, the much more
ambitious Operation Raleigh was created. This started as a four year
project on the renovated Sir Walter Raleigh ship, but its success saw it
continue permanently, with an emphasis on land-based expeditions.
Operation Raleigh became Raleigh International in 1992, reflecting
the number of volunteers from across the globe. We increased the
diversity of volunteers by raising the relevance and quality of our
overseas expeditions and raising issues of global awareness. Today we
continue to work with young people, youth agencies and membership
organisations to inspire people from all walks of life to get out there.
Raleigh – our vision for the next 25 years....
In 25 years Raleigh will be known around the world as the organisation
that created a new way of training and developing young global
citizens, inspiring them to be part of an innovative international
network of alumni who cooperate and work together to solve problems
and build better sustainable communities and environments.
Global Community
We’ve made a great start towards building our global community, with
30,000 alumni in 94 countries. We already have Raleigh societies in 10
countries – in the next 25 years we want an active presence in 25 more.
Active & Passionate
Raleigh is full of can do people with drive; inspired by the spirit of
adventure and discovery; trained to be social entrepreneurs back
home by all that they have experienced on expedition. We want Raleigh
alumni to be a strong network of active citizens who support each
other and improve the lives of others.
Making a difference
We make a difference both to the individual and to the community in
which they are working. We hold in balance the sometimes conflicting
demands of the two with integrity. It is core to how we work – to ensure
that communities, the environment and the individuals all benefit.
Recognition
We will continue to research and evaluate the evidence of our
impact. We will then evaluate our impact in the communities and
environments where we work and ultimately measure the impact of
our fourth challenge around the world. Over the next 25 years we
want to be recognised as the leading international youth volunteering
organisation.

Nuestra Historia
En 1978 cuando el Coronel John Blashford-Snell y el Príncipe Carlos,
iniciaron Operación Drake, ellos tenían una visión. Querían darle a los
jóvenes la oportunidad de explorar el mundo y descubrir su potencial
como líderes y miembros de un grupo, trabajando juntos para marcar la
diferencia. Y es que todavía mantenemos estos valores hoy en día.
En 1984, continuando con el éxito de Operación Drake, se creó un
proyecto mucho más ambicioso: Operación Raleigh. Este fue concebido
como un proyecto de cuatro años, en el renovado barco Sir Walter
Raleigh, aunque su éxito continuó permanentemente, con énfasis en
expediciones sobre tierra.
En 1992, Operación Raleigh se convirtió en Raleigh Internacional ,
reflejando el número de voluntarios de diferentes partes del mundo.
Incrementamos la diversidad de participantes mediante la mejora
de la relevancia y calidad de nuestras expediciones en el extranjero
y exaltando conciencia sobre problemas de índole global. Hoy en
día continuamos trabajando con jóvenes, agencias juveniles y otras
organizaciones para inspirar gente de diferentes formaciones y
experiencias de vida.
Nuestra visión para los próximos 25 años
Dentro de 25 años Raleigh será reconocida alrededor del mundo como la
organización que creó una nueva formación y desarrollo de los jóvenes
ciudadanos del mundo, inspirándolos a ser parte de este innovador

contamos con sociedades en 10 países y en los próximos 25 años
queremos una presencia activa en 25 países más.

Maribios Trek
“Completing the Maribios Trek was definitely the most physically and
mentally challenging experience of my life. We had been warned about
the highs & lows and it’s true that we experienced a rollercoaster of
emotions everyday. Some days we walked a limit-pushing 27 kilometres,
overcoming the challenges of sore feet, the Nicaraguan heat
and lack of sleep due to sharing sleeping space with the local wildlife.
However, all our hard work was worthwhile when we got to the top
of Volcano Cosiguina, completing the climb in a speedy 3 hours and
40 minutes. The amazing view silenced us as we took a moment to
take it all in. The sunset and sunrise at the top was an unforgettable
experience that I will treasure forever. The trek ended on the beautiful
Mechapa beach, where we were finally able to relax and reflect on all
that we had seen and achieved. A wonderful end to a wonderful trek.”

“Completar la caminata Maribios fue definitivamente la experiencia
física y mental más retadora de mi vida. Ya habíamos sido advertidos
sobre los altos y bajos de la experiencia y es cierto que experimentamos
toda clase de emociones cada día. Algunos días caminamos
superando el límite hasta llegar a los 27 kilómetros, venciendo los
desafíos de pies adoloridos, el intenso calor nicaragüense, y la falta
de sueño debido a que compartíamos el espacio donde dormíamos
con la fauna alrededor. Sin embargo, todo nuestro arduo trabajo valió la
pena cuando llegamos a la cima del Volcán Cosiguina, completando el
ascenso velozmente en 3 horas y 45 minutos. La asombrosa vista nos
inmutó mientras nos tomamos unos minutos para asimilar todo aquello.
La puesta de sol y el amanecer fue una experiencia inolvidable que
atesoraremos por siempre. La caminata terminó en la hermosa playa
de Mechapa, donde finalmente nos pudimos relajar y reflexionar sobre
todo lo que habíamos visto y logrado. Un maravilloso final para una
maravillosa caminata.”

Coast to Coast Trek
“Walking coast to coast across the diverse Costa Rican terrain was the
most amazing and testing challenge we have ever undertaken. Every
member of the group has taken something positive from this incredible
experience. The 250km trek from the Caribbean coast through Barbilla
National Park, the rainforest and Valle Escondido Indigenous Reserve
to the Pacific Coast was a great test of determination and endurance as
well as teamwork skills.
Waking up bright and early at 4am every morning soon became the
norm and enabled us to cover up to 25km per day. Everyone experienced
highs and lows but the highs, such as standing on top of The
Dragon mountain, looking out to the Pacific Ocean and making that final
step on to the sandy beach at Playa Palo Seco, made every second
worthwhile. “

“Caminar de costa a costa atravesando el diverso terreno costarricense, fue el
reto más asombroso y difícil que jamás hayamos emprendido. Cada miembro
del grupo ha tomado algo positivo de esta increíble experiencia. Los 250 km
de caminata dede la costa caribeña a través del Parque Nacional Barbilla, el
bosque lluvioso y la Reserva Indígena de Valle Escondido, hasta la costa pacífica,
fue una grandiosa prueba de determinación y resistencia al igual que de
trabajo en grupo.
El levantarse temprano a las 4 am cada mañana, se convirtió pronto en la
norma, y nos permitió recorrer 25km por día. Todos experimentamos altas y
bajas, pero las altas tales como el llegar a la cumbre de la montaña El Dragón,
mirar hacia el Océano Pacífico y llegar finalmente a la playa de arena de Palo
Seco, hizo que cada segundo valiese la pena.”

La Cangreja National Park

“When the Rangers initially showed us where we were to build our trail,
it was hard to imagine the overgrown, steep land taking shape. Down in
the jungle, we used bamboo poles and tarps to construct basha beds,
hammocks, a communal area and kitchen. It was challenging but fun
- our camp soon felt like home. Despite the rain, everyone agreed that
living in the jungle was a unique experience, and one that we embraced
- daily washes in the river were a definite highlight. La Cangreja has
a high level of biodiversity and we were lucky enough to see parrots,
toucans, monkeys, tarantulas, poisonous tree frogs, deadly snakes and
even a strange monkey-like creature called a kinkajou. Cutting the path
was hard work but the sense of achievement as we saw the ranger station
coming into view at the end of our 280m path was tremendous.”

“Cuando los Guardaparques nos enseñaron dónde teníamos que
construir el sendero, fue difícil imaginar que el descuidado y empinado
terreno tomara forma. Abajo en el bosque, utilizamos palos de bambú
y lona para armar camillas con techos, hamacas, un área comunal y
una cocina. A pesar de la lluvia, todos concordamos en que vivir en
el bosque fue una experiencia única, y una vez que adoptamos las
prácticas de lavado diario en el río, ésta se convirtió definitivamente en
el punto culminante del día. La Cangreja tiene un alto nivel de biodiversidad
y fuimos muy afortunados en poder ver loras, tucanes, monos,
tarántulas, ranas venenosas, serpientes mortíferas, e inclusive una criatura
parecida a un mono cuyo nombre es martilla. Arreglar el sendero
fue trabajo duro pero el sentido de logro al ver como aparecía a la vista
la estación de guardaparques al final de nuestro 280mts de sendero,
fue tremendo.”

Camaronal Wildlife Reserve
“Camaronal is a stunning, protected area famous for its nesting turtles
that lay eggs on the beach throughout the year. The three weeks that I
spent there provided me with a wealth of amazing experiences and it
was a privilege not only to see these beautiful creatures but also to play
a part in their survival. Our group was given the duel task of helping
with the turtle egg collection and building steps up to a viewing point
that overlooks the beach, By the end of the phase we had rescued over
10,000 turtle eggs and built 400 steps. In carrying out these tasks, we
learnt that teamwork was the key to helping us to reach our targets.
Spending time in a place of such natural beauty with such incredible
animals was truly a once in a lifetime experience, and one that I will
never forget.”
“Camaronal es un área protegida impresionante, famosa por la anidación
de tortugas las cuales ponen sus huevos en la playa durante
todo el año. Las tres semanas que pasé ahí me brindó abundancia de
experiencias asombrosas y fue un privilegio no solamente el poder ver
estas hermosas criaturas sino que también el poder jugar un papel en
su sobrevivencia. Nuestro grupo se le asignó la tarea de ayudar con la
recolección de los huevos de tortuga y construir escalones hasta un mirador
que muestra la vista a la playa. Para el final de la fase habíamos
rescatado más de 10.000 huevos de tortuga y construido 400 gradas.
En el transcurso de estas tareas, aprendimos que el trabajo en equipo
era la llave para ayudarnos en la consecución de nuestras metas. El
pasar tiempo en un lugar de gran belleza natural y con tantos animales
increíbles fue verdaderamente la experiencia de nuestras vidas, y una
que nunca olvidaremos jamás.”

Cabo Blanco Absolute Reserve
“Cabo Blanco is obviously a very special place. Not only was it the first ever
national park in Costa Rica, it was also previously completely inaccessible
to tourists and even now there are still large parts where no humans are
allowed. This has meant that its natural beauty has remained unspoiled and
that there is an abundance of wildlife in the park.
“Cabo Blanco es obviamente un lugar muy especial. No solamente fue el
primer parque nacional en Costa Rica, sino que también fue previamente totalmente
inaccesible a los turistas e incluso ahora hay algunas partes donde
no se permite el ingreso a la gente. Esto ha significado que su belleza natural
no se haya perdido y que por ende haya abundancia de fauna en el parque.
The first thing we saw when we were unloading our bus was a raccoon trying
to steal our food. It wouldn’t be the only wild animal we saw, because in the
following days we spotted spider monkeys, white faced capuchin monkeys,
huge iguanas, kinkajous, hermit crabs and lots more. Seeing these
amazing animals wasn’t the only treat that nature had to offer us in Cabo
Blanco; cooling down in the sea on the beautiful beach that our trail led to
was a definite highlight, as was eating fresh coconuts from the trees outside
where we slept.
The work we did was to repair a trail which had partially been destroyed by
a mud slide, and to dig trenches along the entire trail to try and ensure that
such a thing wouldn’t happen again. Although very hard work in the baking
heat, it was highly rewarding to know that we were contributing toward
conserving this incredible place.”

La primera cosa que vimos cuando estábamos descargando nuestro bus
fue, un mapache que estaba tratando de robar nuestra comida. No fue el
único animal salvaje que vimos, porque en los siguientes días también vimos
monos araña, monos cariblancos, iguanas inmensas, martillas, cangrejos y
muchos más. El ver estos increíbles animales no fue el único regalo que la
naturaleza tenía que ofrecernos en Cabo Blanco; uno de los momentos más
interesantes fue el refrescarnos en el mar y el comer cocos frescos de las
palmeras que se encontraban afuera del lugar donde dormíamos.
El trabajo que hicimos fue el de reparar un camino que se encontraba parcialmente
destruido por un deslizamiento de lodo, a parte de cavar trincheras
a lo largo del camino para tratar de asegurar que eso no volviera a pasar. A
pesar del arduo trabajo en el intenso calor, fue inmensamente gratificante
el saber que estábamos contribuyendo a la conservación de este increíble
lugar.”

Volunteer Managers & Field Base / Oficina Central

Volunteer Managers fulfill a number of roles on expedition to cover the
safe management of both the projects and the expedition Field Base. These
people are aged 25 and over and come from all walks of life, for example
career changers, people taking sabbaticals, retirees & people who just want
to get out there and make a difference. Two to three Project Managers work
on each site, including some specialist roles: Spanish / English Interpreters,
Mountain Leaders, Medics and people with construction skills. They are all
trained to manage groups and to help each member of the expedition get as
much out of the experience as possible.
Los Guías Voluntarios desempeñan un número de roles en la expedición con
el fin de cubrir el manejo seguro de los proyectos y de la expedición en las
Oficinas Centrales. Estas personas tienen 25 años o más de edad, y provienen
de distintas experiencias de vida, como por ejemplo gente cambiando de
carrera, en vacaciones, pensionados o gente que quiere salir y ser parte
del cambio. De dos a tres Líderes de Proyecto trabajan directamente en las
áreas de proyecto, incluyendo también algunos especialistas, tales como:
Intérpretes, Guías de Montaña, Médicos y personas con habilidades para la
construcción. Todos son personas capacitadas para manejar grupos y ayudar
a cada miembro de la expedición a que logre llevarse lo más que pueda de
esta experiencia.
Raleigh Field Base for Costa Rica & Nicaragua is located on a farm
based on the property of neighbouring university CATIE, with stunning
views of Volcan Turrialba. This is the command and operations centre
for the expedition. There are several office based roles comprising of
Deputy Expedition Leader, Accountant, Logistics Coordinators, Drivers,
Medic, Administrator, Photographer, Communications Officer, Team
Coach and Artist. This is not your average office environment – it is a
busy and exciting place, on hand to communicate 24/7 with the project
groups and ready to assist and react to any eventuality at a moment’s
notice. The volunteers at Field Base also spend a significant time visiting
groups on ‘road trips’ delivering mail, food and resupplies.
Nuestra base de operaciones para Costa Rica y Nicaragua se encuentra
ubicada en la finca propiedad de la universidad vecina del
CATIE, con imponentes vistas del Volcán Turrialba. Este es el centro de
comando y operaciones para la expedición. Hay muchos roles dentro
de la oficina, que van desde Líder de Expedición, Contador, Coordinador
de Logística, Choferes, Médicos, Administradores, Fotógrafos,
Comunicadores, Facilitadores, y Artistas. Este no es el típico ambiente
de trabajo, más bien es un lugar ocupado y emocionante, con comunicación
las 24 horas del día, los 7 días de la semana con los grupos que
se encuentran en sus respectivos proyectos; listos a asistir y reaccionar
ante cualquier eventualidad al momento de la noticia. Los Voluntarios
en la Oficina, también dedican un tiempo significante a visitar los
grupos mediante viajes por carretera y a través de los cuales entregan
cartas, alimento y los reabastecen con provisiones extras.

project partners in Costa Rica and Nicaragua. We have worked hard

Ministerio de Ambiente, Energia y Telecomunicaciones (MINAET)
The Costa Rican National Parks Authority is a key partner to
our work in Costa Rica, providing materials, direction, strategy
and structure to our environmental and adventure projects in
Costa Rica. They are responsible for all of the National Parks and
protected areas in the country. Each protected area is managed
according to a strategy developed in partnership between local
populations, park rangers, scientists and civil societies. All
Raleigh International projects in the National Parks are part of the
management plans of each area.
Cooperativa Juan Francisco Paz Silva
Raleigh International has an established seven year partnership
with the Cooperative Juan Francisco Paz Silva in the Achuapa area
of Northern Nicaragua. The Cooperative works with local farmers
in the farming of sesame seed, cattle and ‘Rosa de Jamaica’, in
order to improve the quality of life of families in the local area.
They provide the cooperative members with health, veterinary and
financial services, agricultural advice, and also to deliver social
improvement projects at the request of the community.
El Foro Miraflor
El Foro Miraflor is a key partner of Raleigh International in our work
in Nicaragua. El Foro Miraflor is a non-governmental organisation
responsible for the co-management of the Miraflor-Moropotente
Nature Reserve, with the mandate of conserving the natural
resources in the area in partnership with the government, civil
society and the local inhabitants. Raleigh works in partnership
with El Foro Miraflor to build educational and community facilities
including improving access to education, water and health services.
Raleigh se preocupa por asegurar la participación de nuestros
socios de expedición en Costa Rica y Nicaragua. Durante estos
ocho años hemos trabajado arduamente para construir relaciones
duraderas, las cuales pensamos son fundamentales para el éxito de

agricultores locales en la siembra de semillas de ajonjolí, rosa
de jamaica y ganado, con el fin de mejorar la calidad de vida de
las familias de la localidad. También provee a los miembros de
la cooperativa con veterinario, servicios de salud y consultoría
financiera y agrícola; como también entrega proyectos de mejora
social a pedido de la comunidad.
El Foro Miraflor
El Foro Miraflor es un socio clave de Raleigh Internacional en su
trabajo en Nicaragua. El Foro Miraflor es una organización no
gubernamental responsable por el manejo conjunto de la Reserva
Natural Moropotente de Miraflor, con el mandato de conservar
los recursos naturales en el área en alianza entre el gobierno, la
sociedad civil y los habitantes locales. Raleigh trabaja en conjunto
con El Foro Miraflor para construir facilidades educativas y
