Bienvenidos
Raleigh Expedition 08D and E has been one of the biggest
expeditions we have run in Costa Rica and Nicaragua and for
the first time ever combining 10-week and 5-week expeditions
for a total of 12 simultaneous projects. It is the combined energy,
dedication and sheer hard work of all 133 participants and 42
staff that has made the projects we’ve worked on the outstanding
success that you will see in the following pages.
Each of you has made a positive and lasting impact on your team
members as well as the local communities and the National Parks
in which your projects were based. We hope that you all leave Costa
Rica and Nicaragua feeling that you have challenged yourselves
and having had the time of your lives.
We would like to say a massive thank you to all of you for making
the last 3 months such an incredible experience.

Las Expediciones 08D y E de Raleigh Internacional han sido una
de las expediciones más grandes que hemos realizado en Costa
Rica y Nicaragua por primera vez combinando expediciones de
diez y cinco semanas para un total de 12 proyectos simultáneos.
La combinación de energía, dedicación y arduo trabajo de los
133 participantes y 42 guías voluntarios es lo que ha hecho de los
diez proyectos un rotundo éxito y el cual podrás evidenciar en las
siguientes páginas.
Cada uno de ustedes ha causado un impacto positivo y duradero
en los miembros de su grupo como también en las comunidades
locales y Parques Nacionales en los cuales se encontraban sus
proyectos. Esperamos que se vayan de aquí pensando que no sólo
constituyó un gran reto para ustedes, sino que también fue una gran
experiencia en sus vidas.

About Us/
Sobre Nosotros
Raleigh is a charity that provides adventurous and challenging
expeditions for people from all backgrounds, nationalities and ages,
especially young people. Over the last 24 years, 30,000 people have
been involved in more than 250 expeditions to over 40 countries,
developing their skills, exploring the world and making a real
difference to local communities and the environment.
Raleigh has been working in Costa Rica and Nicaragua for the past
seven years. We have completed 152 projects, all with the absolute
dedication of 1803 participants and 412 Volunteer Managers. These
people have volunteered their time to make a direct impact in diverse
communities and to aid the sustainability of the environment for the
people of Costa Rica and Nicaragua.
Raleigh Internacional es una organización de caridad que brinda
expediciones de aventura y retos para gente de todas las clases,
nacionalidades y edades, especialmente gente joven. Desde
hace 24 años, 30.000 personas se han involucrado en más de
250 expediciones alrededor de 40 paises, desarrollando sus
habilidades, explorando el mundo y marcando la diferencia en
comunidades locales y medio ambiente.
Raleigh ha trabajado en Costa Rica y Nicaragua desde hace siete

Our Projects/Lugares de Projectos
Adventure Projects/Projectos de Aventura
Each trek covers between 200-250km over stunning scenery,
ranging from high mountains and cloud forests to tropical dry
forests running down to the sea. Each day the groups walk for
roughly 6-8 hours while learning navigational and camping skills
and surviving for 19 days in the wilderness.
Cada caminata cubre entre 200-250 km sobre un imponente
paisaje, que varía desde altas montañas pasando por bosques
nubosos, bosque tropical seco hasta llegar al mar. Cada día los
grupos caminan alrededor de 6 a 8 horas mientras aprenden
destrezas de orientación, campamento y superviviencia durante
19 días en en la montaña.

Community Projects/Projectos Comunales
The community projects in Nicaragua work to introduce pre-schools,
primary schools and community centres into villages in order to
improve the quality of life of the local people, and provide a basic
education to ensure the conservation of the natural resources.
In Costa Rica we work in partnership with indigenous peoples to
construct buildings where basic educational and health services
can be provided.
En los proyectos comunales se trabaja para introducir preparatorias,
escuelas, centros comunales y acceso a agua potable, para mejorar
la calidad de vida de las comunidades y poder brindar educación
básica para asegurar la conservación de los recursos naturales.
En Costa Rica trabajamos en conjunto con grupos indígenas para
construir edificios donde pueda darse una educación básica y
ofrecerse servicios de salud.

Environmental Projects/Projectos Ambientales
Working along side SINAC, the Costa Rican National System of
Conservation Areas, the environmental projects are located in Costa
Rican National Parks. The work is important for the conservation of
eco-systems and biodiversity in Costa Rica as it allows the rangers
to better protect the natural resources as well as providing improved
access to visitors.
Trabajando de la mano con el SINAC (El Sistema Nacional de
Conservación de Areas), los proyectos ambientales se localizan en
los Parques Nacionales Costarricenses. El trabajo es importante
para la conservación de los ecosistemas y la biodiversidad en
Costa Rica ya que permite a los guardaparques proteger de mejor
manera los recursos naturales como también proporcionar mejoras
en el acceso a los visitantes.

The Guanacaste Trek
“The nineteen day trek was one of the most amazing experiences of my
life. Hiking through the pouring rain with a heavy rucksack was really
tough. We were all soaked through to the skin but there was nothing
else to do but encourage each other and push on. I gained a lot of
confidence in myself when we finally made it to a stunning beach. After
two days relaxing and nursing our blistered feet I knew it was worth
every minute.”

El caminar debajo de un torrencial aguacero cargando una pesada
mochila fue realmente difícil. Todos estábamos empapados pero no

asombrosa playa. Luego de dos días de relajarnos y cuidar de las

The Rio Macho Trek
“The Rio Macho was tougher than I ever could have imagined. Rising
before dawn to climb hundreds of metres, in the pounding rain, carrying
a backpack half my weight, pushed me to my limits. But reaching Playa
Hermosa, literally ‘beautiful beach’, on the Pacific Ocean with all of my
teammates pushing each other on, I feel now that I can do anything.”

Llevantandome antes del sol para subir cienes de metros, abajo de los

The Coast to Coast Trek
“While the name may say it all, nothing quite prepares for the demands
of the Coast to Coast Trek. Crossing a continent is a once in a lifetime
opportunity. Our efforts were rewarded as we made our way through
the spectacular landscapes of beach, jungle, mountains and cloud
forest. Day after day we were overwhelmed by the incredible hospitality
and friendliness of the Costa Rican people. No one will forget our first
glimpse of the Pacific Ocean, or arriving at the Playa El Rey beach,
so many memories to be cherished, so many achievements to be
proud of.”

Simiriñak
This Raleigh team worked on a project in the Chirripo Indigenous
Reserve to build a ‘comedor’ (dining hall) for the primary school in the
community of Simiriñak.
“We’ve made it! Hours on a bus, half a day’s trekking and finally we
emerged from the jungle into a beautiful valley with the majestic
Pacuare river running through it. Looking back, I remember feeling
nervous and scared at the thought of living in their school, eating the
local food, learning about the Cabecar indigenous people. However,
the feeling, the reward I got from seeing the brand new ‘comedor’ being
built plank by plank, was just fantastic.”

Este grupo de Raleigh trabajó en un proyecto en la Reserva Indígena
Chirripó para construir un comedor para la escuela primaria de la
comunidad de Simiriñak.
¡Lo “ hicimos! Horas en bus, caminatas de medios dias, y finalmente
salíamos del bosque a un hermoso valle con el majestuoso Rio Pacuare
de por medio. Mirando hacia atrás, recuerdo haberme sentido nervioso
y asustado al pensar en el tener que vivir en una escuela, comer la
comida local, y el aprender sobre los indígenas Cabecar. El sentimiento
y la recompensa que recibí al observar la construcción tabla por tabla
del nuevo Comedor fue fantástico!”

Quetzal
“When I first arrived in the Chirripo Indigenous Reserve, there was
nothing, just an open grassy area amongst their thatched homes, where
we were to somehow build a ‘Comedor’ so that school children could
receive daily meals. By the end the building would be a landmark in this
small community. To interact and learn from the Cabecar people, not
only with their age-old ways of life, but a language like no other, was
beyond words to describe. In total, it was an experience I shall never
ever forget.”

“Cuando recién llegué a la Reserva Indígena Chirripó, no había nada,
solamente un área verde abierta en medio de casas con techo de paja,
donde teníamos de algún modo que construir un comedor para que
los niños de la escuela pudieran recibir sus comidas diarias. Al final,
la construcción constituiría un punto de referencia en esta pequeña
comunidad. El interactuar y aprender de los Cabecar, no solamente
su antigua forma de vida, pero una lengua como ninguna otra, fue
indescriptible. Fue una experiencia que nunca jamás olvidaré.”

Monte Frio 2
The Juan Francisco Paz Silva Cooperative is a small grass-roots
organisation set up to help the people of Achuapa, a remote area in the
north of Nicaragua. The Raleigh team worked with the community and
the Cooperative to build a water system for eighty wonderful families in
the community of Monte Frio 2.
“Living in Monte Frio 2 was a crazy and amazing experience. We really
felt that we were part of something special, helping to provide fresh
running water to a village devastated by a hurricane a few years earlier.
It was such a different way of life to live in a house without running water
or electricity and definitely hardcore to have to go to a well each day to
fetch water!”

La Cooperativa Juan Francisco Paz Silva es una pequeña organización
que se estableció para ayudar a la gente de Achuapa, en una remota
área al norte de Nicaragua. El grupo de Raleigh trabajó con la
comunidad y la Cooperativa en la construcción de un sistema de agua
para 80 maravillosas familias en la comunidad de Monte Frio 2.
“Vivir en Monte Frio 2 fue una experiencia loca y maravillosa. Realmente
sentimos que formábamos parte de algo especial, ayudando a
suministrar agua potable a un pueblo devastado por un huracán pocos
años atrás. Fue una forma diferente de vida, vivir en una casa sin agua
o electricidad y es definitivamente duro tener que ir a un pozo todos los
dias para recoger agua!”

Salitre
In Southern Costa Rica, in the Salitre Indigenous Reserve, the Raleigh
team built a water system for a primary school in the community of Las
Rosas. This system enables the children to drink clean and safe water
and to get cooked meals at school.
“To be honest, writing this has proved harder than anything for me; I
just have so many strong feelings and unforgettable memories from my
time spent in Salitre. To do something so simple and basic like digging
trenches to supply running water to the families, to their schools and to
the community as a whole was incomprehensible. Having spent three
weeks living and learning in a culture founded on such basic means has
given me a new perspective on life.”

Al Sur de Costa Rica, en la Reserva Indígena de Salitre, el equipo de
Raleigh construyó un sistema de agua para una escuela primaria de la
Comunidad de Las Rosas. Este sistema permite a los niños tomar agua
potable y además obtener comidas preparadas en la escuela.
“Para ser honesto, al escribir ésto me he probado a mi mismo lo duro
que ha sido; tengo tantos sentimientos y recuerdos inolvidables del
tiempo que estuve en Salitre. El hacer algo tan básico y simple como
el cavar zanjas para suministrar agua a estas familias, a sus escuelas,
y a la comunidad como un todo fue incomprensible. Después de haber
estado tres semanas viviendo y aprendiendo en una cultura fundada en
lo más básico me ha brindado una nueva perspectiva sobre la vida.”

La Esperanza
“My day has been like no other, having started at 4am when the
family’s farm animals began to call throughout my wooden walled
and mud floor house. My head torch is my only aid while I watch
silently in the darkness as my ‘mother’ teaches me to make
tortillas. A delicious meal of beans, rice and tortillas washed down
with strong yet sweet black coffee, gives me strength on the work
site. Our community centre walls are climbing higher each day, and
each day my confidence soars with achievement and pride. Life
is so simple, stripped to the real basics, and yet I love it more than
anything. I crawl to bed exhausted, and thought how hard it would
be to leave.”

“My día ha sido como ningún otro, comencé a las 4 am cuando los
animales de la familia empezaron a llamar a través de la paredes
de mi casa de madera y piso de barro. El foco de mi cabeza es
la única ayuda que tengo mientras observo silenciosamente
en la oscuridad cómo mi “mamá” me enseña a hacer tortillas.
Una deliciosa comida de frijoles, arroz y tortillas acompañado
con un fuerte y dulce café negro, me da fortaleza para el día de
trabajo. Las paredes de nuestro centro comunal se ven cada día
más grandes, y cada día mi seguridad aumenta con cada logro y
satisfacción. La vida es tan simple, se limita a lo más básico, y aún
así la adoro más que nada. Esa noche me arrastré hasta la cama
exhausto, y pensé lo duro que sería partir.”

El Cebollal Abajo
“Working alongside El Foro Miraflor, the co-managers of the Miraflor
wildlife reserve, has enabled us to work with the amazing people of
the communities of La Esperanza and El Cebollal Abajo. Over the
past few months we have built a school and a community centre in
partnership with the local villagers. The people of the reserve have
few resources and lack access to basic services such as health
and education and so our contribution is making a difference to the
quality of life of these people and conserving the environment of
this beautiful protected area.”

“Trabajar al lado de El Foro Miraflor, los co-administradores de la
Reserva de Naturas Miraflor, nos ha permitido trabajar con gente
increíble de las comunidades de La Esperanza y El Cebollal Abajo.
A través de los pocos meses que han pasado hemos construido
una escuela y un centro comunal en asociación con los miembros
de la comunidad. La gente de la reserva tiene pocos recursos
y falta de acceso a los servicios básicos tales como educación

Playa Junquillal Wildlife Reserve
This is the first time that Raleigh volunteers worked in this
protected area to improve the campsite for the many thousands
who visit this beautiful national park. Set on the shores of the
Salinas Bay, with stunning white sands, calm waters and animalrich
dry tropical forests, this is quite literally a natural paradise. The
team rebuilt the forest trails and BBQ areas by day and camped in
hammocks overlooking the Pacific Ocean at night.

Esta fue la primera vez que los voluntarios de Raleigh trabajaron
en esta área protegida para mejorar el área de campamento
para beneficio de los miles de turistas que visitan este hermoso
parque nacional. Ubicado en las orillas de Bahía Salinas, con
impresionante arena blanca, aguas tranquilas y gran riqueza
animal, este bosque tropical seco es literalmente un paraíso
natural. El grupo reconstruyó los senderos del bosque y las áreas
para barbecue y acamparon en la noche en hamacas con vista
hacia el Océano Pacífico.

Santa Rosa National Park
“The Raleigh team and local surfers alike agreed that this park
holds probably the best beach in the world. Not only are the waves
awesome but the sight of a huge rock, the size of a house, in the
middle of the surf is mind boggling. We spent two weeks painting
and restoring the rangers and scientist’s offices. So when we got
a chance to walk around the national park and see the awesome
‘Witches Rock’ we came to understand why the work
was worthwhile.”

Bosque del Nino Wildlife Reserve
The Bosque del Nino Wildlife Reserve holds one of the largest remaining
areas of forest in the Central Valley. It’s quite high up in the mountains
below the Poas Volcano and so it can get quite cold. During the day we
worked on building the new visitor centre for the thousands of nature
enthusiasts who visit this stunning wildlife reserve each year.
“One day hundreds of children turned up – it was great to think that
the beautiful new visitor centre that we built will be put to good use,
allowing new generations of Costa Ricans to learn about the wonders of
nature and the importance of conserving their natural resources.”

La Reserva de Vida Silvestre Bosque del Niño retiene una de las áreas
más grandes de bosque en el Valle Central. Se encuentra arriba en
las montañas, en las faldas del Volcán Poás así que se pone bastante
frío. Durante el día trabajamos en la construcción del nuevo centro de
visitantes para los miles de personas que vienen de paseo cada año a
esta impresionante reserva.

hermoso nuevo centro para turistas que hemos construido será
utilizado, permitiendo a nuevas generaciones de Costarricenses

San Lucas Wildlife Reserve
Before 1992, San Lucas was a prison with a reputation for being the
roughest jail in the country. The Costa Rican government have decided
to transform this abandoned prison island into a wildlife refuge and
cultural site.
“San Lucas island is a magical place of natural beauty and amazing
sunsets. Our team worked on clearing and restoring trails. The work
was intense but rewarding as we cut through the overgrowth supported
by the friendly rangers. After work we headed straight for the pier to
jump into the sea and cool down. I loved going fishing with the local
fishermen who caught a massive fish which we barbequed over an
open fire.”

Antes de 1992, San Lucas fue una prisión con la reputación de ser la
cárcel más peligrosa en el pais. El Gobierno de Costa Rica ha decidido
transformar esta abandonada isla prisión en un refugio de vida silvestre
y sitio de interés cultural.
“La Isla de San Lucas es un lugar mágico de belleza natural y
extraordinarios atardeceres. Nuestro grupo trabajó en la reparación
y limpieza de senderos. El trabajo fue intenso pero gratificante con
el apoyo de los amables guardaparques. Después de trabajar nos
dirigíamos directo al muelle para brincar directo en el mar. Adoré ir a
pescar con los pescadores locales quienes atraparon un pez enorme el
cual luego cocinamos en una fogata que hicimos.”

Barbilla National Park
Barbilla National park contains some of the best primary rainforests
in the country and yet is one of the remotest and least visited national
parks. The park is used by scientists to study a great number of species
of flora and fauna.
“We arrived to find our bedroom was made of thick impenetrable jungle,
our daily shower was a pristine waterfall and our neighbours were
indigenous Amerindians living in their own reserve. Yet somehow it still
managed to amaze us each day. Starting with the clearing of our jungle
camp, building of forest trails and learning from the park rangers, with
whom our support was crucial to, in order to conserve and sustain this
area for international scientific research.”

El Parque Nacional Barbilla posee uno de los mejores bosques lluviosos
primarios en el pais y hasta ahora es uno de los parques nacionales
más remotos y menos visitados. El parque es utilizado por científicos
para estudiar un gran número de especies de flora y fauna.
“Llegamos y descubrimos que nuestros cuartos estaban hechos de
bosque impenetrable, nuestra ducha una primitiva catarata y nuestros
vecinos eran indígenas que vivían en su propia reserva. Aún así de
algún modo cada día era un poco más asombroso. Después del
establecimiento del área de acampar, construimos senderos en el
bosque y aprendimos de los guardaparques, con el fin de conservar y
mantener esta área para investigación científica.”

Caletas-Ario Wildlife Reserve
The beautiful Caletas-Ario wildlife reserve is one of Costa Rica’s newest
protected areas and as such is just starting to develop a conservation
and protection infrastructure. The reserve consists of dry tropical forest,
large areas of mangroves, a series of beaches where turtles lay their
eggs and a marine area. Our Raleigh team renovated the ranger station
and helped prepared the nesting sites for the turtles.

made me acutely aware of my place in the world.”

Esta hermosa reserva de vida silvestre Caletas-Ario es una de las
más recientes áreas protegidas de Costa Rica y como tal a penas
está empezando a desarrollar una infraestructura de protección y
conservación. La reserva consiste en un bosque tropical seco, grandes
áreas de manglar, una serie de playas donde las tortugas llegan a
desovar sus huevos y una área marina. Nuestro grupo de Raleigh
renovó la estación de guardaparques y preparó las áreas de desove
para las tortugas.

Guayabo National Monument
The site is over 3000 years old and houses the remains of one of the
largest historical settlements in the country. Although only twenty
percent of the known settlement has been excavated, you can see the
platforms where the houses once stood, cobbled streets, petroglyphs
and the remains of tombs.
“The most amazing part of this project was working in this stunning
archaeological site. We set to work repairing the trails in the middle of
a beautiful rainforest. Break times would be spent overlooking ruins
which hold a history thousands of years old. We knew our work would
be appreciated not only by the rangers and guides but also by the
thousands of people who will visit the site”.

Este sitio tiene más que 3000 años y esta famosa por las ruinas del
asentamiento antiguo más grande del pais. Solamente un viente por
ciento del sitio esta excavado pero uno puede ver los montÍculos de las

La Cangreja National Park
La Cangreja gets its name from the striking 1,305 metre peak Cerro
Cangreja. With its mixture of Tropical Humid forest, pre-Montane forest,
and number of species and plant found nowhere else in the world, the
area is vital for research purposes and conservation.
“Sometimes, after it rained, it got so muddy and so tough to work
that you almost wanted to give up. But seeing the steps through the
rainforest at the end made all the blood, sweat and tears worthwhile.”

La Cangreja toma su nombre del imponente pico de 1.305 metros del
Cerro Cangreja. Con su mezcla de bosque tropical húmedo, bosque
pre-montano, y un número de especies y plantas que no se encuentran
en ningún otro lugar del mundo, el área es vital para propósitos de
investigación y conservación.

The Adventure Challenge
All of the 5-week participants, or Delta groups as they became known
as, undertook an 8-day adventure challenge that proved to be an
extravaganza of trekking, problem solving and survival exercises. No
one who was there will ever forget the excitement as the volunteers
got to put into practice their training. It proved tough and challenging
but hugely enjoyable as you can see above.
“It was incredibly exciting to receive outdoor survival training one day
and then put it into practice the next. Our skills were really tested on our
final night where we built our own shelters on the beach and cooked
fresh fish using stakes on an open fire “

Delta como se les llamó, llevaron a cabo una aventura reto de 8 días
que comprobó ser un gran espectáculo de caminata, de resolución

dura y desafiante pero sumamente divertida como se podrá ver
a continuación.

and Nicaragua to be crucial to the success of our expeditions. We make
a number of scholarships available for young Nicaraguan and Costa
Ricans aged between 18-25 years.

These participants are positive young people from disadvantaged

These participants work hard to raise money to contribute towards the
charity’s work and expenses and take part in the Expedition. Working
in a culturally diverse team is integral to the Raleigh experience. This
current expedition has hosted international participants and Volunteer
Managers from Australia, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, France, Hong
Kong, Ireland, New Zealand, Nicaragua, South Africa, the UK and
the USA.
Volunteer Managers
Each year we take on over 300 volunteer managers in a variety of roles
based on the project sites or at Field Base to help run these expeditions
and in doing so, make a difference to the lives of young people and
local communities.

Raleigh takes care to ensure the involvement of our expedition project

Ministerio de Ambiente y Energia (MINAE)
The Costa Rican National Parks Authority is a key partner to our work in
Costa Rica, providing materials, direction, strategy and structure to our
environmental and adventure projects in Costa Rica. They are responsible
for all of the National Parks and protected areas in the country. Each
protected area is managed according to a strategy developed in partnership
between local populations, park rangers, scientists and civil societies.
All Raleigh International projects in the National Parks are part of the
management plans of each area.
Cooperativa Juan Francisco Paz Silva
Raleigh International has an established seven year partnership with the
Cooperative Juan Francisco Paz Silva in the Achuapa area of Northern
Nicaragua. The Cooperative works with local farmers in the farming of
sesame seed, cattle and ‘Rosa de jamaica’, in order to improve the quality
of life of families in the local area. They provide the cooperative members
with health, veterinary and financial services, agricultural advice, and also
to deliver social improvement projects at the request of the community.
El Foro Miraflor
El Foro Miraflor is a key partner of Raleigh International in our work in
Nicaragua. El Foro Miraflor is a non-governmental organization responsible
for the co-management of the Miraflor-Moropotente Nature Reserve, with
the mandate of conserving the natural resources in the area in partnership
with the government, civil society and the local inhabitants. Raleigh works
in partnership with El Foro Miraflor to build educational and community
facilities including improving access to education, water and health services.

de Nicaragua. La Cooperativa trabaja con agricultores locales en la siembra
de semillas de ajonjolí, Rosa de Jamaica y ganado, con el fin de mejorar la
calidad de vida de las familias de la localidad. También provee a los miembros
de la cooperativa con veterinario, servicios de salud y consultoría financiera
y agrícola; como también entrega proyectos de mejora social a pedido de
la comunidad.
El Foro Miraflor
El Foro Miraflor es un socio clave de Raleigh Internacional en su trabajo
en Nicaragua. El Foro Miraflor es una organización no gubernamental
responsable por el manejo conjunto de la Reserva Natural Moropotente
