Welcome
Raleigh Expedition 09A has been an astounding success. It
is the combined energy, dedication and sheer hard work of
all 97 Venturers and 28 Volunteer Managers that has made
the projects we’ve worked on so outstanding, as you will
see in the following pages. Each of you has made a positive
and lasting impact on your team members as well as the
local communities and the National Parks in which your
projects were based. We hope that you all leave Costa Rica
and Nicaragua feeling that you have challenged yourselves
and having had the time of your lives. We would like to say a
massive thank you to all of you for making the last 3 months
such an incredible experience.

La Expedición 09A de Raleigh ha sido todo un éxito. La
combinación de la energía, dedicación y arduo trabajo
de los 97 participantes y 28 guías encargados es lo
que ha hecho que los proyectos que se han realizado,
sean tan exitosos, tal como se podrá evidenciar en las
páginas siguientes. Cada uno de ustedes ha marcado
un impacto positivo y duradero sobre los miembros de
su equipo, así como en las comunidades locales y los
Parques Nacionales en donde se ubican los proyectos.
Esperamos que todos ustedes dejen Costa Rica y
Nicaragua con una sensación de que se han desafiado a
ustedes mismos y que aparte experimentaron uno de los

About Raleigh
Raleigh is a charity that provides adventurous and challenging
expeditions for people from all backgrounds, nationalities and
ages, especially young people. Over the last 25 years, 30,000
people have been involved in more than 250 expeditions to
over 40 countries, developing their skills, exploring the world
and making a real difference to local communities and the
environment. Raleigh has been working in Costa Rica and
Nicaragua for the past seven years. We have completed 168
projects; all with the absolute dedication of 1931 Venturers and
454 Volunteer Managers. These people have volunteered their
time to make a direct impact in diverse communities and to aid
the sustainability of the environment for the people of Costa
Rica and Nicaragua.
Sobre Raleigh
Raleigh Internacional es una organización de caridad que
ofrece expediciones de aventura y retos para gente de
todas las clases, nacionalidades y edades, especialmente
gente joven. Desde hace 25 años, 30.000 personas se han
involucrado en más de 250 expediciones alrededor de 40
países, desarrollando sus habilidades, explorando el mundo
y marcando la diferencia en comunidades locales y medio
ambiente. Raleigh ha trabajado en Costa Rica y Nicaragua
desde hace siete años. Hemos realizado 168 proyectos, con
la absoluta dedicación de 1931 participantes y 454 Guías

roles. They play an integral part in the running of these expeditions, helping to
make a difference to the lives of young people and local communities.

The Projects
Adventure Projects
Each trek covers over 250 kilometres in 19 days. Learning navigation, camping
and survival skills along the way, teamwork, determination and a good sense
of humour are essential. The 4am starts, tough climbs and up to 10 hours
trekking a day are all worthwhile when rewarded with incredible views,
abundant wildlife and an enormous sense of achievement upon arrival at the
beautiful beaches; this truly gives each person the belief they can overcome
any future challenge they may be faced with.
Proyectos de Aventura
Cada caminata abarca más de 250 kilómetros en 19 días. Aprendiendo de
paso destrezas de supervivencia, orientación, y campamento; el trabajo en
equipo, una gran determinación y un buen sentido del humor son esenciales
en este sentido. Se inicia a las 4 am, con duras escaladas y caminatas de 10
horas al día las cuales son recompensadas con increíbles paisajes, abundante
vida silvestre y un enorme sentido de logro tras la llegada a las hermosas
playas. Esto realmente otorga a cada persona la certeza de que podrá superar
cualquier reto que pueda enfrentar en el futuro.

Living in the heart of some of the most remote areas in Costa Rica and
Nicaragua, these projects provide a unique opportunity to work alongside
members of communities to help provide basic facilities such as access to
clean water and education. The hard work of the Raleigh groups helps to
improve quality of life and provide valuable resources for many generations to
come.

Al vivir en el corazón de algunas de las áreas más remotas de Costa Rica
y Nicaragua, estos proyectos brindan la oportunidad única de trabajar con
miembros de las comunidades ayudando a proveer facilidades básicas tales
como acceso a agua limpia y a educación. El trabajo arduo de los grupos de
Raleigh ayuda a mejorar la calidad de vida y provee valiosos recursos para las
muchas generaciones por venir.
Environmental Projects
Working alongside SINAC (Costa Rican National System of Conservation
Areas) based in Costa Rica’s National Parks, the environmental groups live and
work alongside park rangers to help maintain and improve the national parks.
The projects are hugely important in helping to preserve natural resources &
habitats and protect important species of plants & animals.

Trabajando junto con el SINAC (Sistema Nacional de Areas de Conservación)
basado en los Parques Nacionales Costarricenses, los grupos viven y trabajan
con los guardaparques para ayudar al mantenimiento y mejoramiento de
los Parques Nacionales. Los proyectos son sumamente importantes para
la preservación de los recursos naturales y hábitats, y, en la protección de
importantes especies de plantas y animales.

The Corcovado Trek
Beautiful mountains, towering cloud forest and hot springs, followed by
some of the world’s best preserved tropical rainforest, incredible wildlife
and finishing with a spectacular three-day beach trek - the Corcovado
Trek has it all.
“The intense heat and tough climbs became completely worthwhile.
We were behind at the start, so our sense of accomplishment,
especially at making up the lost time, was an incomparable feeling of
elation.”

La Caminata Corcovado tiene de todo. Desde hermosas montañas, un
bosque nuboso con imponentes árboles, aguas termales, hasta uno de
los bosques tropicales mejor conservados en el mundo. A parte de una
increible pesca y vida silvestre, y una espectacular caminata de tres
dias a la playa.

pena. Estábamos atrasados al inicio, así que nuestro sentido de
logro, especialmente el de compensar el tiempo perdido, fue de un
incomparable sentimiento de entusiasmo.”

The Macho-Bares Trek
“Macho by name, Macho by nature, we climbed the equivalent of Mount
Everest! Beginning in the dense rainforest of Barbilla National Park, our
trek took us right across Costa Rica and into the hot, sunny climate of
the Pacific, finishing at Playa Hermosa. A big highlight for me was the
stunning views and in particular summiting two of the biggest mountains
in the area – Cerro Dragon and Cerro Bares.”

“Trekking through jungle, rain and sun, the ups and downs of the terrain
paralleled the rise and fall in the group’s emotions. One particularly long
day, we had to race against night fall and in the end we had to put up a
make-shift camp short of our destination. Morale was flagging but a few
hours later we got to see the most amazing sunset as we sat around the
campfire above the clouds. When night fell we watched the shooting
stars in the sky and all just felt so lucky to be there.”

“¡Macho por nombre, Macho por naturaleza, escalamos el equivalente
al Monte Everest! Empezando en el denso bosque lluvioso del Parque
Nacional Barbilla, nuestra caminata nos llevó a través de Costa Rica,
hasta el caluroso y soleado Pacífico, terminando en Playa Hermosa.
Uno de los momentos más interesantes para mí fueron los asombrosos
paisajes y en particular alcanzar dos de las montañas más grandes del
área: el Cerro Dragón y el Cerro Bares.”

“Un día particularmente largo: caminar a través del bosque, la lluvia y
el sol; los desniveles del terreno y las altas y bajas en las emociones
del grupo. Tuvimos que correr antes de que oscureciera e improvisar un
campamento a pocos pasos de nuestro destino final. Con la moral más
baja que nunca, unas horas después pudimos presenciar la puesta de sol
más impresionante, cuando nos sentamos alrededor de la fogata sobre
las nubes. Cuando anocheció observamos las estrellas en el cielo y
simplemente nos sentimos sumamente afortunados de estar ahí.”

Coast to Coast Trek
“While the name may say it all, nothing quite prepares for the demands
of the Coast to Coast Trek. Crossing a continent is a once in a lifetime
opportunity. Our efforts were rewarded as we made our way through
the spectacular landscapes of beach, jungle, mountains and cloud
forest. Day after day we were overwhelmed by the incredible hospitality
and friendliness of the Costa Rican people. No one will forget our first
glimpse of the Pacific Ocean, or arriving at the Playa El Rey beach; so
many memories to be cherished, so many achievements to be proud
of.”

Los Playones, Achuapa
High in the hills above Achuapa, in one of the poorest, most remote
areas of Nicaragua, Raleigh worked to bring clean and safe drinking
water to families in the community of Los Playones. The people have
small sesame seed harvests that they sell to a cooperative in Achuapa.
The Cooperative in turn is dedicated to improving the quality of life of
the community members.

way the families took us into their homes with such hospitality. Their
openness, friendliness and desire to build relationships with us was
truly touching.”

En lo alto de las montañas sobre Achuapa, en una de las áreas más
pobres y remotas de Nicaragua, Raleigh trabajó para brindar agua
limpia y potable a las familias de la comunidad de Los Playones. La
gente tiene pequeñas cosechas de semillas de ajonjolí la cual vende a
una cooperativa en Achuapa. La Cooperativa de turno está dedicada a
mejorar la calidad de vida de los miembros de la comunidad.
“Para mí lo que hizo de esta experiencia algo inolvidable, fue la forma
en que las familias nos acogieron en sus casas con tanta hospitalidad.
Su franqueza, amistad y deseo de construir una relación con nosotros
fue algo verdaderamente conmovedor.”

La Carona, Conte Burika
“The 6 hour beach walk into Conte Burika was spectacular enough,
but La Carona itself is an even more magical place, so peaceful and
amazingly beautiful. It was wonderful to be welcomed into the unique
and fascinating Guaymi culture. We constructed a comedor (dining hall)
for the school children. This will give them somewhere to eat and allow
the community to claim food benefits from the government.”

“We learned about indigenous building methods, and spent our time
measuring, planing and nailing the structure together. Before we could
actually start, we had to lug the 50kg pieces of wood over a hilly 3km
track. Though the carrying was tough, the views from the top were
spectacular and we felt incredibly privileged to be able to look out over
the stunning Burika peninsula and the Pacific Ocean stretching out
before us.”

“Las 6 horas de caminata a Conte Burika fueron espectaculares. Sin
embargo, La Carona es un lugar incluso más impresionante, super
tranquilo e increíblemente hermoso. Fue maravilloso ser bienvenido
en la fascinante y única cultura Guaymi. Construimos un comedor
para los niños de la escuela. Esto les permitirá tener un lugar donde
comer y a la vez la comunidad podrá solicitar beneficios alimenticios al
Gobierno.”

“Aprendimos sobre métodos de construcción indígena, y dedicamos
nuestro tiempo midiendo, planeando y clavando toda la estructura.
Antes de que pudieramos empezar, tuvimos que cargar los 50 kg de
madera en un recorrido de 3 km cuesta arriba. Aunque fue duro, la vista
desde arriba fue espectacular y nos sentimos sumamente privilegiados
de poder estar ahí y ver la asombrosa Península de Burika y el Oceáno
Pacífico.”

San Ramon, Miraflor Wildlife Reserve
“For me, living and working in Miraflor was a very special experience.
We felt privileged to become part of the community. Building the
community centre, cleaning up the water supply, helping out in the
school and spending time making tortillas and coffee with the families
allowed us to learn a huge amount from them. No one had much in
financial terms, but the people were the kindest and most welcoming I
have known.”

“It was a great experience for the community to have the Raleigh
group here. They are excellent workers and have done a great job in
the community, not only in the construction of the building but also
in creating a garden for the school, cleaning our water source and
constructing a bridge, which is very important for access. They also
helped to teach in the school. The community took the group in as
though they were their own family.”

Para mí, vivir y trabajar en Miraflor fue una experiencia muy especial.
Nos sentimos privilegiados de formar parte de la comunidad. Construir
el centro comunal, limpiar el suministro de agua, ayudar en la
escuela, cocinar tortillas y chorrear café con las familias nos permitió
conocer una gran cantidad de cosas sobre ellos. Nadie tenía mucho
en términos monetarios, pero estas personas fueron la gente más
generosa y amable que haya conocido.”

“Fue una gran experiencia para la comunidad tener al grupo de Raleigh
aquí. Son excelentes trabajadores y han hecho un excelente trabajo en
la comunidad, no sólo en la construcción del salón comunal sino que
también en la creación de los viveros para la escuela, en la limpieza de
nuestra fuente de agua y en la construcción de un puente, el cual es
muy importante para el acceso. También se les ayudó a los niños en
las clases. La comunidad acogió al grupo como si fueran de su propia
familia.”

Playa El Rey
Playa El Rey in Manuel Antonio National Park is a crucial turtle nesting
site where Olive Ridley, Green and Hawksbill turtles come to lay their
eggs each year. These species are all listed as threatened, and as only
one in 10,000 eggs will survive to adulthood, it is a highly important part
of Costa Rica’s environmental strategy.
“The coconut saplings are growing on the coast of Playa El Rey at such
a rate that it is crowding the area and preventing turtles from being able
to bury their eggs. We worked in the baking heat to clear a huge area
of this invading species. It is incredibly rewarding to know that that
these vulnerable and majestic animals can now continue to nest at the
beach.”

Playa El Rey, en el Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio es un área de desove
crucial donde las tortugas Verde, Lora y Carey vienen a dejar sus huevos
cada año. Todas estas especies se encuentran en la lista de especies
en peligro de extinción, y tan solo 1 en 10.000 huevos sobrevivirá a la
etapa adulta. Es una parte importante de la estrategia ambientalista de
Costa Rica.

Rey a tal ritmo que están abarrotando el área y evitando que las
tortugas entierren sus huevos aquí. Trabajamos bajo el abrazador
calor limpiando una inmensa área de estas especies invasoras. Es
increíblemente gratificante que estos majestuosos y vulnerables
animales puedan continuar anidando en la playa.”

La Cangreja National Park
La Cangreja is Costa Rica’s newest National Park, and is home to a
mixture of tropical humid forest, pre-montane forest and a number of
species of plant found nowhere else in the world.
“The jungle was our home for 20 days. Seeing the group learn how to
adapt, survive and enjoy life without luxuries was fantastic.”

La Cangreja es el Parque Nacional más reciente de Costa Rica,
y alberga una combinación de bosque tropical húmedo, bosque
premontano y un número de especies de plantas que no se encuentran
en ningún otro lugar del mundo.

Santa Rosa National Park
One of the oldest, biggest and arguably most important National
Parks in Costa Rica, this has the largest remaining stand of tropical
dry forest in Central America, as well as some of the most important
nesting sites for several species of turtle. The park is world renowned
for its importance to biologists, and is also a site of major historical
importance – the victorious battle of the Costa Rican forces over the
invading army of William Walker.

visitor area will bring in extra money needed to sustain the livelihood
of the park, and allow the protection and conservation of this beautiful
area. Trekking to the most stunning, deserted beaches I have ever seen,
and spending evenings talking and laughing around the camp meant
that I absolutely loved living and working in Santa Rosa.”

Es uno de los Parques Nacionales más grandes, antiguos y se podría
decir que el más importante de Costa Rica. Tiene la cantidad más grande
de especîmenes restantes de bosque tropical seco en Centroamérica,
como también algunos de las áreas de desove de muchas especies
de tortuga. El parque es mundialmente reconocido por su importancia
para los biólogos, y es también un lugar de gran importancia histórica: la
batalla victoriosa de las fuerzas costarricenses contra el ejército invasor
de William Walker.

sustento del parque y permitir la protección y la conservación de esta

campamento significó que, absolutamente amé vivir y trabajar en Santa

Horizontes Experimentales
This was the first Raleigh team to work in this fascinating national park in the
Guanacaste province, which is largely made up of rare, dry tropical forest.
There are just a few rangers to look after the 7,000 hectares of Horizontes,
meaning resources are stretched. The group’s work will give the rangers
greater access to the park in order to carry out their work, and assist
scientists with valuable research into the reforestation of this type of forest,
not just in Costa Rica but worldwide.
Este fue el primer grupo de Raleigh en trabajar en este fascinante Parque
Nacional, ubicado en la provincia de Guanacaste. El Parque está compuesto
mayormente por bosque tropical seco poco común. Hay solamente unos
pocos guardaparques en las 7000 hectáreas de Horizontes, lo cual significa
que los recursos son muy escasos. El trabajo del grupo brindará a los
guardaparques gran acceso al Parque con el fin de que lleven a cabo sus
labores, y puedan asistir a los científicos con valiosa investigación en la
reforestación de este tipo de bosque, no solamente en Costa Rica sino que
en todo el mundo.

a unique and beautiful habitat, it’s something you’d never get to experience
normally, especially living in a jungle camp and sleeping in a hammock
under the stars every night. It’s great to think that our work will eventually go
towards replacing some of Central America’s lost forest.”

Project Partners
Raleigh takes care to ensure the involvement of our expedition project partners
in Costa Rica and Nicaragua. We have worked hard over the last seven years to
build up long term relationships, which we feel are pivotal to the success of our
projects.
Ministerio de Ambiente, Energia y Telecomunicaciones (MINAET)
The Costa Rican National Parks Authority is a key partner to our work in Costa
Rica, providing materials, direction, strategy and structure to our environmental
and adventure projects in Costa Rica. They are responsible for all of the National
Parks and protected areas in the country. Each protected area is managed
according to a strategy developed in partnership between local populations, park
rangers, scientists and civil societies. All Raleigh International projects in the
National Parks are part of the management plans of each area.
Cooperativa Juan Francisco Paz Silva
Raleigh International has an established seven year partnership with the
Cooperative Juan Francisco Paz Silva in the Achuapa area of Northern Nicaragua.
The Cooperative works with local farmers in the farming of sesame seed, cattle
and ‘Rosa de Jamaica’, in order to improve the quality of life of families in the
local area. They provide the cooperative members with health, veterinary and
financial services, agricultural advice, and also to deliver social improvement
projects at the request of the community.

Cooperativa Juan Francisco Paz Silva
Raleigh Internacional tiene una sociedad establecida desde hace siete años
con la Cooperativa Juan Francisco Paz Silva en el área de Achuapa, al Norte
de Nicaragua. La Cooperativa trabaja con agricultores locales en la siembra de
semillas de ajonjolí, rosa de jamaica y ganado, con el fin de mejorar la calidad
de vida de las familias de la localidad. También provee a los miembros de la
cooperativa con veterinario, servicios de salud y consultoría financiera y agrícola;
como también entrega proyectos de mejora social a pedido de la comunidad.
El Foro Miraflor
El Foro Miraflor is a key partner of Raleigh International in our work in Nicaragua.
El Foro Miraflor is a non-governmental organisation responsible for the comanagement
of the Miraflor-Moropotente Nature Reserve, with the mandate of
conserving the natural resources in the area in partnership with the government,
civil society and the local inhabitants. Raleigh works in partnership with El Foro
Miraflor to build educational and community facilities including improving access
to education, water and health services.

Nicaragua. El Foro Miraflor es una organización no gubernamental responsable
por el manejo conjunto de la Reserva Natural Moropotente de Miraflor, con

The Fourth Challenge
The Fourth Challenge is to make a difference upon your return. During the
expedition, you learnt many valuable skills that you can now use to make a
positive impact in your community when you get home.
Raleigh has a range of exciting volunteering opportunities in the UK and there is
an Alumni Team at Head Office to support you in whatever you choose to do. You
could…
• Volunteer in your local community
• Join the Raleigh Youth Forum and help generate ideas about
volunteering and be an active voice for the way Raleigh is run
• Be an Expedition Coordinator and help everyone from your expedition
keep in contact
• Help out at Raleigh events
• Tell people about your Raleigh experience at schools and universities,
open days and careers fairs
• Be an environmental volunteer
• Help with a local sports team or initiative
• Get involved with national campaigns

expedición, aprendiste habilidades valiosas que ahora podés usar para crear un
impacto positivo en tu comunidad.

Unido, en donde existe un Equipo de Exvoluntarios en las Oficinas en Londres,
para apoyarte en lo que sea que querás hacer:
• Voluntario (a) en tu comunidad local.
• Formar parte del Foro de Jóvenes de Raleigh ayudando a generar
ideas sobre voluntariado siendo una voz activa en la manera en la
que trabaja Raleigh.
• Ser un Coordinador (a) de Expedición y ayudar a los que formaron
parte de tu expedición a mantenerse en contacto.
• Ayudar en eventos de Raleigh.
• Hablar con la gente sobre tu experiencia en Raleigh tanto en escuelas
y universidades, ferias profesionales y dias de información.
• Ser un voluntario (a) ambientalista.
