Bienvenidos
Raleigh Expedition 08J has been an astounding success. It is
the combined energy, dedication and sheer hard work of all
31 Venturers and 14 Volunteer Managers that has made the
projects we’ve worked on so outstanding, as you will see in the
following pages. Each of you has made a positive and lasting
impact on your team members as well as the local communities
and the National Parks in which your projects were based.
We hope that you all leave Costa Rica and Nicaragua feeling
that you have challenged yourselves and having had the time of
your lives. We would like to say a massive thank you to all of you
for making the last 3 months such an incredible experience.

La Expedición 08J de Raleigh ha sido asombrosa. Es la
combinación de la energía, dedicación y arduo trabajo de los
31 participantes y 14 guías encargados lo que ha hecho que los
proyectos que se han realizado sean tan exitosos, tal como se
podrá evidenciar en las páginas siguientes. Cada uno de ustedes
ha hecho un impacto positivo y duradero sobre los miembros
de su equipo, así como las comunidades locales y los Parques
Nacionales en donde se encontraron los proyectos.

About Us/
Sobre Nosotros
Raleigh is a charity that provides adventurous and challenging
expeditions for people from all backgrounds, nationalities and
ages, especially young people. Over the last 24 years, 30,000
people have been involved in more than 250 expeditions to over 40
countries, developing their skills, exploring the world and making a
real difference to local communities and the environment. Raleigh
has been working in Costa Rica and Nicaragua for the past seven
years. We have completed 159 projects, all with the absolute
dedication of 1834 Venturers and 426 Volunteer Managers. These
people have volunteered their time to make a direct impact in diverse
communities and to aid the sustainability of the environment for the
people of Costa Rica and Nicaragua.
Raleigh Internacional es una organización de caridad que brinda
expediciones de aventura y retos para gente de todas las clases,
nacionalidades y edades, especialmente gente joven. Desde
hace 24 años, 30.000 personas se han involucrado en más de 250
expediciones alrededor de 40 países, desarrollando sus habilidades,
explorando el mundo y marcando la diferencia en comunidades
locales y medio ambiente. Raleigh ha trabajado en Costa Rica y
Nicaragua desde hace siete años. Hemos realizado 159 proyectos,
con la absoluta dedicación de 1834 participantes y 426 Guías
Voluntarios. Esta gente ha ofrecido su tiempo para crear un impacto
directo en diversas comunidades y ayudar con la sostenibilidad del
ambiente de Costa Rica y Nicaragua.

Raleigh encourages Venturers from all walks of life:
Host Country Venturers
Raleigh considers the participation of young people from Costa Rica and
Nicaragua to be crucial to the success of our expeditions. We make a
number of scholarships available for young Nicaraguan and Costa Ricans
aged between 18-25 years. If you would like to participate on a Raleigh

Partnership Venturers
These participants are positive young people from disadvantaged
backgrounds in the UK who, as part of a longer term development
programme, participate on a Raleigh Expedition.
UK and International Fundraising Venturers
These participants work hard to raise money to contribute towards
the charity’s work and expenses in order to take part in the Expedition.
Working in a culturally diverse team is integral to the Raleigh experience.
Expedition 08J has hosted international participants and Volunteer
Managers from Australia, Argentina, Costa Rica, Hong Kong, Ireland, New
Zealand, Nicaragua, Germany, Holland, Switzerland and the UK.
Volunteer Managers
Each year we take on over 300 Volunteer Managers in a variety of
roles based on the project sites or at Field Base to help run these
expeditions and in doing so, make a difference to the lives of young
people and local communities.

al trabajo de la organización y poder sustentar sus gastos en la Expedición.

Cada año recibimos más de 300 guías voluntarios para un sin fin de roles
basados tanto en las diferentes áreas de proyectos como en la oficina central,
y los cuales no sólo ayudan en la realización de estas expediciones sino que
también marcan una gran diferencia en la vida de jóvenes y comunidades.

Although your time in country is now over, your
journey with Raleigh is only just beginning! Raleigh
is not just about an expedition; it is about being part
of a global community of like-minded people. People
like you who want to do something extraordinary with
their lives and really make a difference in the world.

and to get out there and make a difference in your
local communities when you return. There is an
alumni section on the website in which you can keep
in touch with your expedition friends, share memories
and photos and learn about Raleigh societies and

Roca Quemada
Alpha 1 built a secondary school for the remote village of Roca
Quemada in the Chirripó Indigenous Reserve, Costa Rica. It will allow
the children of the community to complete their full school education.
“The highlights of my phase? The awesome people you get to meet and
the great friends you make here. Even when you are muddy, cold, tired,
and covered in mosquito bites, you know you are doing something
amazing for the community.”

Alpha 1 construyó una escuela secundaria para el remoto pueblo de Roca
Quemada en la Reserva Indígena de Chirripó, Costa Rica. Esta permitirá a
los niños de la comunidad tener una educación más completa.
¿Qué cuáles fueron los momentos más interesantes de mi fase? La gente
formidable que llegás a conocer y los grandes amigos que hacés. Incluso
cuando estés lleno de barro, con frío, cansado y cubierto con picaduras

Los Playones, Achuapa
The group created a gravity feed system to provide clean, fresh water to seven
families and one school in this small Nicaraguan village. The people have
small sesame seed harvests which they sell to a cooperative in Achuapa.
The Cooperative in turn is dedicated to improving the quality of life of the
community.
“We worked alongside the local community to bring fresh clean water to a
school. Although we found the work difficult in the heat, it was extremely
rewarding to work on a project that immediately benefits the community and will
continue to do so for generations to come.”

El grupo creó un sistema basado en la gravedad para proveer, agua limpia y
fresca para siete familias y una escuela en un pequeño pueblo nicaragüense.
La gente tiene pequeñas cosechas de semilla de ajonjolí las cuales vende a una
cooperativa en Achuapa. La Cooperativa a su vez está dedicada a mejorar la
calidad de vida de la comunidad.
“Trabajamos junto a la comunidad local para abastecer a una escuela con
agua fresca y limpia. Aunque se nos hizo muy difícil trabajar en el calor, fue
sumamente gratificante trabajar en un proyecto que beneficia inmediatamente
a la comunidad y que beneficiará también a las generaciones por venir”.

Environmental /Ambientales
La Cangreja National Park
In one of Costa Rica’s newest national parks, Alpha 3 built a wheelchair access path,
only the second in the country. This will bring in valuable tourism dollars, which allows the
rangers to continue conserving and protecting a huge area of rainforest.
“My highlight cannot be pin pointed to the one moment. It has been watching the team
come together throughout our time here; working, laughing, sleeping and eating in the
jungle! Mud, sweat and hard work have brought us all closer and I feel we have all become
stronger individuals as we have grown as a team.”

“My personal highlight was after a good 6 days of hard work in the baking heat. We took
a four and a half hour hike through a mystical jungle to stumble across the most magical
waterfall ever. Simply fantastic. Also, seeing the progression of the path has made me feel
like a proud father!”

En uno de los parques nacionales más nuevos de Costa Rica, Alpha 3 construyó un
acceso para silla de ruedas, el segundo en el pais. Esto traerá más turismo y por lo tanto
más dinero, lo cual permitirá a guardaparques continuar con la conservación y protección
de una inmensa área de bosque lluvioso.
“Lo más interesante de mi experiencia no puede ser enfrascado en un solo momento.
En realidad ha sido el observar al grupo convivir juntos, trabajando, riendo, durmiendo y
comiendo en el bosque. Barro, sudor y arduo trabajo nos ha unido más y siento que nos ha
convertido en individuos más fuertes a como fuimos creciendo como grupo”

“Mi mejor experiencia fue después de 6 buenos dias de arduo trabajo bajo el intenso calor.
Nos tomó cuatro y media horas de caminata a través de un bosque místico tropezando
con la más mágica catarata. ¡Simplemente fantástica!. También, ver el progreso del
sendero me hizo sentir ¡ como un padre orgulloso!”

El Cebollal, Miraflor Wildlife Reserve
The Miraflor Reserve in Nicaragua is 206sqkm of beautiful mountainous terrain with various
ecosystems such as tropical savannah, dry tropical forest and mountain cloud forest. Within
the reserve there are a number of communities living through subsistence farming and gaining
income through coffee, cattle and some small tourism initiatives.
“I have learned so much from the locals. This is the best place to learn Spanish, explore
another culture, experience whole other lifestyles and discover the history of the Nicaraguan
revolution.”

“The support of Raleigh is very valuable for us as a community. I feel very happy to work with
this group of people because by planting fruit trees they will feed the community, help with
reforestation and remind us of when Raleigh were here. This group also helped to restore trails
and viewpoints which will work to give a better service to the tourists and the people of the
government who visit the ranger station.”

La Reserva de Miraflor en Nicaragua es un hermoso terreno montañoso de 206 km cuadrados, con
varios ecosistemas tales como sabana tropical, bosque tropical seco, y bosque montañoso nuboso.
Dentro de la reserva existen un número de comunidades que viven de la agricultura de subsistencia
y que tienen ganancias a través del café, ganado y algunas pequeñas iniciativas turísticas.
“He aprendido muchísimo de los locales. Este es el mejor lugar para aprender Español, explorar
otras culturas, experimentar otras formas de vida y descubrir la historia de la revolución
Nicaragüense.”

“El apoyo de Raleigh es muy valioso para nosotros como comunidad. Me siento muy feliz de trabajar
con este grupo de gente ya que sembrando árboles frutales se estará alimentando a la comunidad,
ayundando con la reforestación y recordándonos el tiempo que Raleigh estuvo por aquí.
Este grupo también ayudó a restaurar senderos y miradores lo que permitirá dar un mejor servicio a
los turistas y a la gente del gobierno que visite la estación de guardaparques”.

Coast 2 Coast Trek
The Coast to Coast Trek involves trekking 250km from the Caribbean
Sea to the Pacific Ocean.
“Summing up my trek into one paragraph is almost impossible. There
are so many memories; eating fresh bananas and coconuts in the
Caribbean, the incredible hospitality of the many communities that put
us up for the night, days of dense jungle containing snakes, white face
capuchin monkeys, red poison arrow dart frogs & parrots, bathing in
rivers and waterfalls, and of course the climax. Reaching the beach was
the most amazing feeling ever. We all knew that together as a team we
had walked across a continent. It’s amazing the great companionship
you can find within a close team and how much you can achieve when
you mentally believe it’s possible.”

La Caminara de Costa a Costa involucra una caminata de 250 km
desde el Mar Caribe hasta el Oceáno Pacífico.
“Resumir mi caminata en un párrafo es casi imposible. Hay tantos
recuerdos: el comer bananos y cocos frescos en el Caribe, la increíble
hospitalidad de las muchas comunidades que nos recibieron en la
noche, días de denso bosque en donde compartimos con serpientes,
monos cariblancos, ranas rojas venenosas y loras; el bañarse en rios y
cataratas, y por supuesto lo mejor de todo el finalmente llegar a la playa
fue lo mejor de todo. Todos sabíamos que juntos como grupo habíamos
caminado a través de un continente. Es increíble la grandiosa compañía
que se puede encontrar dentro de un grupo y lo mucho que se puede
lograr cuando mentalmente se cree que es posible”.

The Maribios Trek / The Rio Macho Trek
The Maribios Trek follows the Maribios chain of volcanoes in the north-east
of Nicaragua, from Esteli to Mechapa on the Pacific Coast.
The Rio Macho Trek goes from Raleigh Field Base in Turrialba to Punta Judas on
the Pacific Coast, scaling two mountains en route – Cerro Dragon & Cerro Barres.
‘This trek has been the single most challenging and painful thing of my
life. At times I felt like giving up, but the feeling at the end of each day is
amazing and definitely worth all the blisters and hard work. I’ve had the
time of my life.”

La Caminata Maribios sigue la cadena de volcanes Maribios en el
noreste de Nicaragua, desde Estelí a Mechapa en la Costa Pacífica.
La Caminata de Rio Macho va desde las Oficinas Centrales de Raleigh
en Turrialba a Punta Judas en la Costa Pacífica, escalando dos
montañas en ruta a Cerro Dragón y Cerro Barres.
“Esta caminata ha sido la experiencia más retadora y dolorosa de mi
vida. En veces sentí que quería renunciar, pero el sentimiento al final
de cada día es increíble y definitivamente valió todas las ampollas y el
arduo trabajo. He pasado una de los mejores momentos en mi vida”.

Project Partners / Socios
Raleigh takes care to ensure the involvement of our expedition project partners
in Costa Rica and Nicaragua. We have worked hard over the last seven years to
build up long term relationships, which we feel are pivotal to the success of our
projects.
Ministerio de Ambiente y Energia (MINAE)
The Costa Rican National Parks Authority is a key partner to our work in Costa
Rica, providing materials, direction, strategy and structure to our environmental
and adventure projects in Costa Rica. They are responsible for all of the National
Parks and protected areas in the country. Each protected area is managed
according to a strategy developed in partnership between local populations,
park rangers, scientists and civil societies. All Raleigh International projects in
the National Parks are part of the management plans of each area.
Cooperativa Juan Francisco Paz Silva
Raleigh International has an established seven year partnership with the
Cooperative Juan Francisco Paz Silva in the Achuapa area of Northern
Nicaragua. The Cooperative works with local farmers in the farming of sesame
seed, cattle and ‘Rosa de Jamaica’, in order to improve the quality of life of
families in the local area. They provide the cooperative members with health,
veterinary and financial services, agricultural advice, and also to deliver social
improvement projects at the request of the community.
El Foro Miraflor
El Foro Miraflor is a key partner of Raleigh International in our work in
Nicaragua. El Foro Miraflor is a non-governmental organization responsible
for the co-management of the Miraflor-Moropotente Nature Reserve, with the
mandate of conserving the natural resources in the area in partnership with the
government, civil society and the local inhabitants. Raleigh works in partnership
with El Foro Miraflor to build educational and community facilities including
improving access to education, water and health services.

Ministerio de Ambiente y Energia (MINAE)
Las autoridades Costarricenses de los Parques Nacionales son socios claves
en nuestro trabajo , proveyendo materiales, dirección, estrategia y estructura
a nuestros proyectos ambientales y de aventura en Costa Rica. Ellos son los
responsables povr todos los Parques Nacionales y Areas Protegidas en el pais.
Cada Area Protegida es manejada de acuerdo a una estrategia desarrollada en
conjunto con la población local, los guardaparques, los científicos y la sociedad
civil. Todos los proyectos de Raleigh Internacional en los Parques Nacionales
son parte de los planes de manejo de cada área.
Cooperativa Juan Francisco Paz Silva
Raleigh Internacional tiene una sociedad establecida desde hace siete años
con la Cooperativa Juan Francisco Paz Silva en el área de Achuapa, al Norte
de Nicaragua. La Cooperativa trabaja con agricultores locales en la siembra
de semillas de ajonjolí, Rosa de Jamaica y ganado, con el fin de mejorar la
calidad de vida de las familias de la localidad. También provee a los miembros
de la cooperativa con veterinario, servicios de salud y consultoría financiera
y agrícola; como también entrega proyectos de mejora social a pedido de la
comunidad.
El Foro Miraflor
El Foro Miraflor es un socio clave de Raleigh Internacional en su trabajo en
Nicaragua. El Foro Miraflor es una organización no gubernamental responsable
por el manejo conjunto de la Reserva Natural Moropotente de Miraflor, con
el mandato de conservar los recursos naturales en el área en alianza entre el
gobierno, la sociedad civil y los habitantes locales. Raleigh trabaja en conjunto
con El Foro Miraflor para construir facilidades educacativas y comunales
incluyendo la mejora al acceso a la educación, agua y servicios de salud.
