78 IWGIA - EL MUNDO INDIGENA - 2005 CANADA E n Canadá, la Ley Constitucional (1982) reconoce tres grupos de pueblos aborígenes: las Primeras Naciones (o indios, como a menudo se les llama), los métis y los inuit. Según el censo de 2001, en las provincias, con exclusión de los Territorios del Norte, las mayores concentraciones de pueblos aborígenes están en las praderas del Canadá central y occidental, y la provincia de Saskatchewan es la que tiene el porcentaje más alto (9%) en comparación con los no aborígenes. La población aborigen total se divide en dos mitades: los que viven en medios urbanos contra los que viven en las áreas rurales. Winnipeg (Manitoba) es la que tiene más habitantes aborígenes, seguida de Edmonton (Alberta), Vancouver (Columbia Británica) y después Calgary (Alberta). Los pueblos de las Primeras Naciones suponen el mayor porcentaje de la población aborigen total (aproximadamente un 67%), seguidos de los métis (aproximadamente un 26%). Las Primeras Naciones fueron históricamente llamadas bandas indias, pero muchos se oponen a la falta de organización política que parece derivarse del término “banda” y han cambiado los títulos recibidos, usando frecuentemente sus propias lenguas. Las Primeras Naciones tienen la mayoría de los derechos históricos a los territorios de las provincias a través de cesiones de tierras y tratados negociados con los administradores coloniales británicos o con el gobierno canadiense y la Ley Constitucional protege los derechos establecidos a través de estos tratados. Sin embargo, hay varias excepciones a esta regla general, debido a diferencias históricas/territoriales entre las provincias.
