State-of-the-art Protein Structural Biology 29
11. We are at the present time initiated an ongoing research
project to obtain the DNA sequence of the genomic DNA
from blood samples of patients afflicted with Amelogenesis
imperfecta in Mexico and subsequently clone the defective
protein for structural biological research.
Acknowledgements
VR expresses his indebtedness to Prof. Melvin J. Glimcher,
Harriet Peabody Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, Harvard
Medical School, Harvard University, Boston, MA for initiating
him into the field of biomineralization in early 80’s. Much
of the research has been supported through research grants
(RO1’s) from National Institutes of Health since 1985 to V. R,
Harvard Medical School, Harvard University, Cambridge,
MA, A Program Project Grant to the Laboratory for the
Skeletal Disorders and Rehabilitation, Dept. of Orthopaedic
Research, Harvard Medical School, NIH, NSF, and Harvard
University provided generous support for the purchase of 500
and 600 MHz NMR spectrometers used in this study. The 750
MHz NMR studies on recombinant mouse amelogenin were
performed at the Battelle Northwest Laboratories, Richland,
WA. Mr. Jose Trinidad Vivas Cortes, Institute of Chemistry,
UNAM and Mr. Masahiro Tanikawa Ishiwara, Mexico City,
Mexico rendered valuble help in the preparation of the art
work which is sincerely acknowledged.
